    If you are developing a commercial desktop application, what's your release process? Sample process: Develop it: Patch bugs, add features, etc. Feature Freeze (do not fix, add anything unless it's absolutely required) Test it If everything is OK release it, if it's not fix it, test it, release it I think the most crucial question is what's your approach to "feature freeze test release" cycle? Or do you test it more frequently that you don't need such a cycle and your software is always ready for public release?

  • How does this Singleton Web Class persists session data, even though session is not updated in the p

    Ok, I've got this singleton-like web class which uses session to maintain state. I initially thought I was going to have to manipulate the session variables on each "set" so that the new values were updated in the session. However I tried using it as-is, and somehow, it remembers state. For example, if run this code on one page: UserContext.Current.User.FirstName = "Micah"; And run this code in a different browser tab, FirstName is displayed correctly: Response.Write(UserContext.Current.User.FirstName); Can someone tell me (prove) how this data is getting persisted in the session?   • Best second language to learn for a native english speaking programmer?

    I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, but I would like to pick one that can also help me the most in my career. I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not. I would like to be able to travel the world, especially if I could have a reason to go one place or another. Which leads me to my question: What is the best second language to learn for a native English speaking programmer? (Especially from the US) Some ideas that come to mind for me are Mandarin, German, Japanese, French... I am looking for experienced opinions though! Thanks.

    I'm working on a contact form for my church website. The church has an email already registered (it's POP3) and the hosting company says their mail server is mymail.brinkster.com . With all that information, how can you send the form using mail()? The server won't show PHP errors. The current code looks like this: $headers = 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . "\r\n"; $headers .= 'Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1' . "\r\n"; $headers .= 'From: *ChurchsEmail*' .   • Drawing translucent bitmaps using Canvas (Android)

    I have a Bitmap object and want to render it to a Canvas object with varying levels of translucency (i.e. make the whole bitmap partially see through). For example, I have sprites in a game (that are drawn over the top of a bitmap background) that I want to fade out from being opaque to being invisible. Can I do this without having to resort to OpenGL?

Shouldn't it need to parse HTML source FIRST Before it parses CSS file (I assume which triggers the 'Recalculate Style') and Java Script file (I assume which triggers the 'Function Call')

    Hello, I'm looking at trying my hand at a bit of freelancing. And looking at some of the listings, I can tell some of them are definitely, obviously wrong. "A web application mimicking youtube. Project must be completed in 2 weeks. Flat payment of $200. If you are not willing to do things this fast paced then do not apply" But some of them are more subtle and they give me a red flag inside, but I'm not sure to avoid them. What are some things in job listings to avoid for freelance programming jobs? What is the reason for avoiding that?

  • Top techniques to avoid 'data scraping' from a website database

    I am setting up a site using PHP and MySQL that is essentially just a web front-end to an existing database. Understandably my client is very keen to prevent anyone from being able to make a copy of the data in the database yet at the same time wants everything publicly available and even a "view all" link to display every record in the db. Whilst I have put everything in place to prevent attacks such as SQL injection attacks, there is nothing to prevent anyone from viewing all the records as html and running some sort of script to parse this data back into another database. Even if I was to remove the "view all" link, someone could still, in theory, use an automated process to go through each record one by one and compile these into a new database, essentially pinching all the information. Does anyone have any good tactics for preventing or even just dettering this that they could share. Thanks

  • How to make a wxFrame behave like a modal wxDialog object

    Is is possible to make a wxFrame object behave like a modal dialog box in that the window creating the wxFrame object stops execution until the wxFrame object exits? I'm working on a small game and have run into the following problem. I have a main program window that hosts the main application (strategic portion). Occasionally, I need to transfer control to a second window for resolution of part of the game (tactical portion). While in the second window, I want the processing in the first window to stop and wait for completion of the work being done in the second window. Normally a modal dialog would do the trick but I want the new window to have some functionality that I can't seem to get with a wxDialog, namely a status bar at the bottom and the ability to resize/maximize/minimize the window (this should be possible but doesn't work, see this question How to get the minimize and maximize buttons to appear on a wxDialog object). As an addition note, I want the second window's functionality needs to stay completely decoupled from the primary window as it will be spun off into a separate program eventually. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions?

  • Define Servlet Context in WAR-File

    Hi, How can I tell e.g. Tomcat to use a specific context path when given my WAR-File? Example: I have a war file created by maven build and the resulting name of the file is rather long. So I do not want the tomcat manager application to use the filename of the war as the context. Supplying a context.xml in META-INF did not produce the desired results I also found this in the documentation for the path attribute of Context: The value of this field must not be set except when statically defining a Context in server.xml, as it will be inferred from the filenames used for either the .xml context file or the docBase. So it does not seem to be the right way to tell the application-server what the path for my WAR should be. Any more hints?

  • Do you feel threatened by younger developers?

    When an opportunity for a new project in my company presented itself, I volunteered with a little bit of skepticism but a lot of excitement. I have been working with this company for 5 years on a different project in which I was a team lead for several releases. I have a consistent track record of delivering good quality projects. The new project has a team that is built from ground up and the management decided to hire new developers. The technologies used are the latest ones that are different from the previous project I had worked on (although they both are in .NET). The newer and the younger developers in the team have more experience with the latest technologies from their previous gigs. The younger developers have a lot more energy, can work 14 hours a day (they remind me of my early 20s) and live on ramen noodles. Since they are new, I feel they are obligated to show what they are made of and to prove their mettle. I feel like I am sidelined in this project and the management obviously like the younger developers as they bring more to the table. I know ageism is rampant in our field and the more I think about this, the more it makes me feel that there are very few transferable skills from one project to the other and one day you could be a team lead managing a number of developers, the next day some one you hired becomes your boss. Do you see yourself in situations like this very often? What plans do you have to make yourself valuable in a long term perspective?

  • DirectX 9 HLSL vs. DirectX 10 HLSL: syntax the same?

    For the past month or so, I have been busting my behind trying to learn DirectX. So I've been mixing back back and forth between DirectX 9 and 10. One of the major changes I've seen in the two is how to process vectors in the graphics card. One of the drastic changes I notice is how you get the GPU to recognize your structs. In DirectX 9, you define the Flexible Vertex Formats. Your typical set up would be like this: #define CUSTOMFVF (D3DFVF_XYZRHW | D3DFVF_DIFFUSE) In DirectX 10, I believe the equivalent is the input vertex description: D3D10_INPUT_ELEMENT_DESC layout[] = { {"POSITION",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32_FLOAT, 0 , 0, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0}, {"COLOR",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32A32_FLOAT, 0 , 12, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0} }; I notice in DirectX 10 that it is more descriptive. Besides this, what are some of the drastic changes made, and is the HLSL syntax the same for both?

  • I can't figure out why this fps counter is inaccurate.

    I'm trying to track frames per second in my game. I don't want the fps to show as an average. I want to see how the frame rate is affected when I push keys and add models etc. So I am using a variable to store the current time and previous time, and when they differ by 1 second, then I update the fps. My problem is that it is showing around 33fps but when I move the mouse around really fast, the fps jumps up to 49fps. Other times, if I change a simple line of code elsewhere not related to the frame counter, or close the project and open it later, the fps will be around 60. Vsync is on so I can't tell if the mouse is still effecting the fps. Here is my code which is in an update function that happens every frame: FrameCount++; currentTime = timeGetTime (); static unsigned long prevTime = currentTime; TimeDelta = (currentTime - prevTime) / 1000; if (TimeDelta > 1.0f) { fps = FrameCount / TimeDelta; prevTime = currentTime; FrameCount = 0; TimeDelta = 0; } Here are the variable declarations: int FrameCount; double fps, currentTime, prevTime, TimeDelta, TimeElapsed; Please let me know what is wrong here and how to fix it, or if you have a better way to count fps. Thanks!!!!!! I am using DirectX 9 btw but I doubt that is relevant, and I am using PeekMessage. Should I be using an if else statement instead?     Hello, I am trying to find the best option to create a simple progress bar that I need to be triggered periodically from within another JavaScript script. Every few minutes, a timer would cause the progress bar to start going from 0 to 100%. Once it reaches 100%, the bar would reset to 0.   • How should I move my code from dev to production?

    I have created a PHP web-application. I have 3 environments: DEV, TEST, PROD. What's a good tool / business practice for me to move my PHP web-application code from DEV to TEST to the PROD environment? Realizing that my TEST environment still only connects to my TEST database; whereas, I need to PROD environment to connect to my PROD database. So the code is mostly the same, except that I need to change my TEST code once moved into PROD to connect to the PROD database and not TEST database. I've heard of people taking down Apache in such away that it doesn't allow new connections and once all the existing connections are idle it simply brings down the web server. Then people manually copy the code and then manually update the config files of the PHP application to also point to the PROD instance. That seems terribly dangerous. Does a best practice exists?

  • jQuery Cluetip not activated until after hover or click event

    I'm not sure what is causing this, but I am using cluetip and binding it to a live event (either click or mouseenter), but in each situation the cluetip isn't firing until after one click or hover event. I am using the live event for ajax loaded content, but I'm also having this issue with non-Ajax loaded content. I'm not sure why this is happening - can anyone see where I might be going wrong?
