• When someone deletes a shared data source in SSRS

  SQL Server Reporting Services plays nicely. You can have things in the catalogue that get shared. You can have Reports that have Links, Datasets that can be used across different reports, and Data Sources that can be used in a variety of ways too. So if you find that someone has deleted a shared data source, you potentially have a bit of a horror story going on. And this works for this month’s T-SQL Tuesday theme, hosted by Nick Haslam, who wants to hear about horror stories. I don’t write about LobsterPot client horror stories, so I’m writing about a situation that a fellow MVP friend asked me about recently instead. The best thing to do is to grab a recent backup of the ReportServer database, restore it somewhere, and figure out what’s changed. But of course, this isn’t always possible. And it’s much nicer to help someone with this kind of thing, rather than to be trying to fix it yourself when you’ve just deleted the wrong data source. Unfortunately, it lets you delete data sources, without trying to scream that the data source is shared across over 400 reports in over 100 folders, as was the case for my friend’s colleague. So, suddenly there’s a big problem – lots of reports are failing, and the time to turn it around is small. You probably know which data source has been deleted, but getting the shared data source back isn’t the hard part (that’s just a connection string really). The nasty bit is all the re-mapping, to get those 400 reports working again. I know from exploring this kind of stuff in the past that the ReportServer database (using its default name) has a table called dbo.Catalog to represent the catalogue, and that Reports are stored here. However, the information about what data sources these deployed reports are configured to use is stored in a different table, dbo.DataSource. You could be forgiven for thinking that shared data sources would live in this table, but they don’t – they’re catalogue items just like the reports. Let’s have a look at the structure of these two tables (although if you’re reading this because you have a disaster, feel free to skim past). Frustratingly, there doesn’t seem to be a Books Online page for this information, sorry about that. I’m also not going to look at all the columns, just ones that I find interesting enough to mention, and that are related to the problem at hand. These fields are consistent all the way through to SQL Server 2012 – there doesn’t seem to have been any changes here for quite a while. dbo.Catalog The Primary Key is ItemID. It’s a uniqueidentifier. I’m not going to comment any more on that. A minor nice point about using GUIDs in unfamiliar databases is that you can more easily figure out what’s what. But foreign keys are for that too… Path, Name and ParentID tell you where in the folder structure the item lives. Path isn’t actually required – you could’ve done recursive queries to get there. But as that would be quite painful, I’m more than happy for the Path column to be there. Path contains the Name as well, incidentally. Type tells you what kind of item it is. Some examples are 1 for a folder and 2 a report. 4 is linked reports, 5 is a data source, 6 is a report model. I forget the others for now (but feel free to put a comment giving the full list if you know it). Content is an image field, remembering that image doesn’t necessarily store images – these days we’d rather use varbinary(max), but even in SQL Server 2012, this field is still image. It stores the actual item definition in binary form, whether it’s actually an image, a report, whatever. LinkSourceID is used for Linked Reports, and has a self-referencing foreign key (allowing NULL, of course) back to ItemID. Parameter is an ntext field containing XML for the parameters of the report. Not sure why this couldn’t be a separate table, but I guess that’s just the way it goes. This field gets changed when the default parameters get changed in Report Manager. There is nothing in dbo.Catalog that describes the actual data sources that the report uses. The default data sources would be part of the Content field, as they are defined in the RDL, but when you deploy reports, you typically choose to NOT replace the data sources. Anyway, they’re not in this table. Maybe it was already considered a bit wide to throw in another ntext field, I’m not sure. They’re in dbo.DataSource instead. dbo.DataSource The Primary key is DSID. Yes it’s a uniqueidentifier... ItemID is a foreign key reference back to dbo.Catalog Fields such as ConnectionString, Prompt, UserName and Password do what they say on the tin, storing information about how to connect to the particular source in question. Link is a uniqueidentifier, which refers back to dbo.Catalog. This is used when a data source within a report refers back to a shared data source, rather than embedding the connection information itself. You’d think this should be enforced by foreign key, but it’s not. It does allow NULLs though. Flags this is an int, and I’ll come back to this. When a Data Source gets deleted out of dbo.Catalog, you might assume that it would be disallowed if there are references to it from dbo.DataSource. Well, you’d be wrong. And not because of the lack of a foreign key either. Deleting anything from the catalogue is done by calling a stored procedure called dbo.DeleteObject. You can look at the definition in there – it feels very much like the kind of Delete stored procedures that many people write, the kind of thing that means they don’t need to worry about allowing cascading deletes with foreign keys – because the stored procedure does the lot. Except that it doesn’t quite do that. If it deleted everything on a cascading delete, we’d’ve lost all the data sources as configured in dbo.DataSource, and that would be bad. This is fine if the ItemID from dbo.DataSource hooks in – if the report is being deleted. But if a shared data source is being deleted, you don’t want to lose the existence of the data source from the report. So it sets it to NULL, and it marks it as invalid. We see this code in that stored procedure. UPDATE [DataSource]    SET       [Flags] = [Flags] & 0x7FFFFFFD, -- broken link       [Link] = NULL FROM    [Catalog] AS C    INNER JOIN [DataSource] AS DS ON C.[ItemID] = DS.[Link] WHERE    (C.Path = @Path OR C.Path LIKE @Prefix ESCAPE '*') Unfortunately there’s no semi-colon on the end (but I’d rather they fix the ntext and image types first), and don’t get me started about using the table name in the UPDATE clause (it should use the alias DS). But there is a nice comment about what’s going on with the Flags field. What I’d LIKE it to do would be to set the connection information to a report-embedded copy of the connection information that’s in the shared data source, the one that’s about to be deleted. I understand that this would cause someone to lose the benefit of having the data sources configured in a central point, but I’d say that’s probably still slightly better than LOSING THE INFORMATION COMPLETELY. Sorry, rant over. I should log a Connect item – I’ll put that on my todo list. So it sets the Link field to NULL, and marks the Flags to tell you they’re broken. So this is your clue to fixing it. A bitwise AND with 0x7FFFFFFD is basically stripping out the ‘2’ bit from a number. So numbers like 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, etc, whose binary representation ends in either 11 or 10 get turned into 0, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, etc. We can test for it using a WHERE clause that matches the SET clause we’ve just used. I’d also recommend checking for Link being NULL and also having no ConnectionString. And join back to dbo.Catalog to get the path (including the name) of broken reports are – in case you get a surprise from a different data source being broken in the past. SELECT c.Path, ds.Name FROM dbo.[DataSource] AS ds JOIN dbo.[Catalog] AS c ON c.ItemID = ds.ItemID WHERE ds.[Flags] = ds.[Flags] & 0x7FFFFFFD AND ds.[Link] IS NULL AND ds.[ConnectionString] IS NULL; When I just ran this on my own machine, having deleted a data source to check my code, I noticed a Report Model in the list as well – so if you had thought it was just going to be reports that were broken, you’d be forgetting something. So to fix those reports, get your new data source created in the catalogue, and then find its ItemID by querying Catalog, using Path and Name to find it. And then use this value to fix them up. To fix the Flags field, just add 2. I prefer to use bitwise OR which should do the same. Use the OUTPUT clause to get a copy of the DSIDs of the ones you’re changing, just in case you need to revert something later after testing (doing it all in a transaction won’t help, because you’ll just lock out the table, stopping you from testing anything). • Windows Phone 7 : Dragging and flicking UI controls

  Who would want to flick and drag UI controls!? There might not be many use cases but I think some concepts here are worthy of a post. So we will create a simple silverlight application for windows phone 7, containing a canvas element on which we’ll place a button control and an image and then, as the title says, drag and flick the controls. Most topics covering jqgrid and asp.net seem to relate to just receiving JSON, or working in the MVC framework, or utilizing other handlers or web services... but not many dealt with actually passing parameters back to an actual webmethod in the codebehind. Furthermore, scarce are the examples that contain successful implementation the AJAX paging, sorting, or searching along with LINQ to SQL for asp.net jqGrid. You can retrieve the file from downloading here. You will find the file in the "DynamicQuery" folder. That file will give you the ability to utilized dynamic ORDERBY clause since we don't know what column we're filtering by except on the initial load. To serialize the JSON back from the C-sharp to the JS, I incorporated the James Newton-King JSON.net DLL found here : http://json.codeplex.com/releases/view/37810. After downloading, there is a "Newtonsoft.Json.Compact.dll" which you can add in your Bin folder as a reference Here's my USING's block using System; using System.Collections; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web.UI.WebControls; using System.Web.Services; using System.Linq.Dynamic; For the Javascript references, I'm using the following scripts in respective order in case that helps some folks: 1) jquery-1.3.2.min.js ... 2) jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.min.js ... 3) json.min.js ... 4) i18n/grid.locale-en.js ... 5) jquery.jqGrid.min.js For the CSS, I'm using jqGrid's necessities as well as the jQuery UI Theme: 1) jquery_theme/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.css ... 2) ui.jqgrid.css The key to getting the parameters from the JS to the WebMethod without having to parse an unserialized string on the backend or having to setup some JS logic to switch methods for different numbers of parameters was this block postData: { searchString: '', searchField: '', searchOper: '' }, Those parameters will still be set correctly when you actually do a search and then reset to empty when you "reset" or want the grid to not do any filtering Hope this helps some others!!!! • CUDA linking error - Visual Express 2008 - nvcc fatal due to (null) configuration file

  Hi, I've been searching extensively for a possible solution to my error for the past 2 weeks. I have successfully installed the Cuda 64-bit compiler (tools) and SDK as well as the 64-bit version of Visual Studio Express 2008 and Windows 7 SDK with Framework 3.5. I'm using windows XP 64-bit. I have confirmed that VSE is able to compile in 64-bit as I have all of the 64-bit options available to me using the steps on the following website: (since Visual Express does not inherently include the 64-bit packages) http://jenshuebel.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/visual-c-2008-express-edition-and-64-bit-targets/ I have confirmed the 64-bit compile ability since the "x64" is available from the pull-down menu under "Tools-Options-VC++ Directories" and compiling in 64-bit does not result in the entire project being "skipped". I have included all the needed directories for 64-bit cuda tools, 64 SDK and Visual Express (\VC\bin\amd64). • TinyMCE with AJAX (Update Panel) never has a value.

  I wanted to use a Rich Text Editor for a text area inside an update panel. I found this post: http://www.queness.com/post/212/10-jquery-and-non-jquery-javascript-rich-text-editors via this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1207382/need-asp-net-mvc-rich-text-editor Decided to go with TinyMCE as I used it before in non AJAX situations, and it says in that list it is AJAX compatible. Alright I do the good ol' tinyMCE.init({ //settings here }); Test it out and it disappears after doing a update panel update. I figure out from a question on here that it should be in the page_load function so it gets run even on async postbacks. Alright do that and the panel stays. However, upon trying to submit the value from my textarea, the text of it always comes back as empty because my form validator always says "You must enter a description" even when I enter text into it. This happens the first time the page loads and after async postbacks have been done to the page. Alright I find this http://www.dallasjclark.com/using-tinymce-with-ajax/ and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/699615/cant-post-twice-from-the-same-ajax-tinymce-textarea. I try to add this code into my page load function right after the tinyMCE.init. Doing this breaks all my jquery being called also in the page_load after it, and it still has the same problem. I am still pretty beginner to client side scripting stuff, so maybe I need to put the code in a different spot than page_load? Not sure the posts I linked weren't very clue on where to put that code. In all cases it never worked, and even sometimes broke the jquery that is also in my page_load... (and yes I changed the above code to fit my page) Can anyone get this to work or offer a solution?

• Batch break up after call other batch file

  i have the problem, that my batch process breaking up each time after call a other batch file. The batch files are used to run a make process out from IBM Rhapsody. There convert the call from Rhapsody to the Visual Studio tools. So nmake will be called from the batch after make different settings. The scripts aren’t written completely from me, I only adapt theme to run under both windows architecture versions, x86 and x64. The first script (vs2005_make.bat) will be called from Rhapsody and run to the “call” statement. The second script (Vcvars_VisualStudio2005.bat) runs to the end. But the first script isn’t resume working, at this point the process break up without a error message. I'm not very familiar with batch files, this is the first time I make more than simple console commands in a batch file. So I hope I have given all information’s which needed, otherwise ask me. • Sharepoint : Access denied when editing a page (because of page layout) or list item

  I'm logged in as the System Account, so it's probably not a "real access denied"! What I've done : - A custom master page - A custom page layout from a custom content type (with custom fields) If I add a custom field (aka "content field" in the tools in SPD) in my page layout, I get an access denied when I try to edit a page that comes from that page layout. So, for example, if I add in my page layout this line in a "asp:content" tag : I get an access denied. If I remove it, everyting is fine. (the field "test" is a field that comes from the content type). Any idea? SUMMARY You get an ACCESS DENIED when editing a PAGE or an ITEM You still get the error even if you're logged in as the Super Admin of the f****in world (sorry, I spent 3 days on that bug) For me, it happened after an import from another site definition (a cmp file) Actually, it's supposed to be a known bug and it's supposed to be fixed since February 2009, but it looks like it's not. The code I posted above should fix the thing.

  I have a domain listening on both http and https. I want to redirect all the traffic to https except for two specific locations. It works, but only for mydomain.com, not for www.mydomain.com.   After migrating my Drupal (6.16) installation from shared hosting to Linode VPS (Ubunto 10.04 32 bit). Whenever I click a URL it shows only the homepage. I put ?q=user at the end of the URL to login as an admin. When I logged in it is the same. I couldn't navigate to any URL. It shows only homepage. I forgot to clean Drupal cache before migration. Is it because of this? I couldn't navigate to Administer Site configuration Performance to clean cache, nothing works.   I was running the petclinic example that was created with spring roo, also I test booking-mvc example that comes whit spring webflow 2.0.9 and the same happens, this is when I reload the main page many times. • Why is android:FLAG_BLUR_BEHIND creating a gradient background in my new activity instead of bluring

  Hi, I've got two activities. One is supposed to be a blur in front of the other. The background activity has several ImageViews which are set up as thin gradients extending across most of the screen and 10dip high. When I start the second activity it sets the background as a gradient occupying the entire window space, that is it appears to be fill_parent'd for both height and width. If I comment out the ImageViews then it blurs and looks as expected. Any thoughts? • My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

  I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file. • Wiring up JavaScript handlers after a Partial Postback in ASP.NET

  I am trying to use LinkButtons with the DefaultButton property of the ASP.NET Panel in an UpdatePanel. I have read and used the various other answers that are around describing the wiring up of the click event so that a full postback is not done instead of a partial postback. When the page loads, I wire up the .click function of the LinkButton so that the DefaultButton property of the ASP.NET panel will work. This all works fine, until you bring an UpdatePanel into the mix. With an UpdatePanel, if there is a partial postback, the script to wire up the .click function is not called in the partial postback, and hitting enter reverts to causing a full submit of the form rather than triggering the LinkButton. How can I cause javascript to be executed after a partial postback to re-wire up the .click function of the LinkButton? I have produced a sample page which shows the problem. There are two alerts showing 1) When the code to hook up the .click function is being called, and 2) When the .click function has been called (this only happens when you hit enter in the textbox after the event has been wired up). To test this code, type something in the textbox and hit Enter. The text will be copied to the label control, but "Wiring up Event Click" alert will not be shown. Add another letter, hit enter again, and you'll get a full postback without the text being copied to the label control (as the LinkButton wasn't called). Because that was a full postback, the Wiring Up Event Click event will be called again, and the form will work properly the next time again. This is being done with ASP.NET 3.5.   i'm working in a mobile website and i'm having problems with my email form The problem is that when I receive the mail sent through the form, it contains no data. All the data entered by the user is missing.   I have been trying to parse the below XML file (kuler rss feed). I have read the various posts on this site but am unable to piece them together. I specifically want to extract the child(or siblings) nodes of the element <kuler:themeItem>. However I am getting an exception : Namespace Manager or XsltContext needed. This query has a prefix, variable, or user-defined function.   I am currently trying to write a ''web application'' that has a simple text area inside, in which I want the letters of the text written to be pointed out. For example, if I write: ''How old are you? I am 19 years old'' I need a code to tell me how many 'A's and 'Y's and 'D's (and all letters of the alphabet from 0-26) are used in this sentence when I press a button on a HTML/ CSS page.
