• Writing to the middle of the file (without overwriting data)

  In windows is it possible through an API to write to the middle of a file without overwriting any data and without having to rewrite everything after that? If it's possible then I believe it will obviously fragment the file; how many times can I do it before it becomes a serious problem? If it's not possible what approach/workaround is usually taken? Re-writing everything after the insertion point becomes prohibitive really quickly with big (ie, gigabytes) files. Note: I can't avoid having to write to the middle. Think of the application as a text editor for huge files where the user types stuff and then saves. I also can't split the files in several smaller ones.

• How do I trigger specific parts of a storyboard in WPF?

  I have several grids in my window. I have created a storyboard that moves them left by x pixels when a button is clicked. I want to make it so that when the button is clicked again those grids move another x pixels, however I'm unable to find out how to do this as it's not a common task on tutorials. I have tried creating a second storyboard to do this, however that won't work as then the grids will be back at their starting positions. One solution might be to create a third set of keyframes after the first two sets, and somehow pause the animation when it gets there, and resumes it again when the button is clicked, however I'm not sure how to pause a storyboard when it reaches a keyframe. This would also make reversing the grids difficult (using this approach http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/wpf/thread/ac54de71-f750-4940-91a2-231810308727/), as I'd like to make another button make the grids go the other way.

• Fire only one Custom Validator at a time

  I have two Custom Validators attached to a textbox. The textbox is to enter comma separated list of emails. The first validator checks that there is not duplicate email address. The second custom validator checks that all the email addresses are in valid format. I have following code and it works fine. However, when both the failure criteria is met both of them are firing and I get two * at the right side of my textbox. What is the best approach to show only one * at a time? • Level editor for 3D games with open format or API?

  I would like to experiment with machine generated levels for a 3D game. I'm very open which game this will be. I just like the idea to run through a generated map. For this approach, it would be great if I can use an API or an open format for level designs. Is there an open source level system that can be used in several game engines (ego shooter or whatever)? • Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts.   Hi, I'm trying to do a convex hull approach and the little problem is that I need to get all sets of three consecutive vertices, like this: private void isConvexHull(Ponto[] points) { Arrays.sort(points); for (int i = 0; i <points.length; i++) { isClockWise(points[i],points[i+1],points[i+2]); } //... } I always do something that I don't consider clean code. Could please help me find one or more ways to this? I want it to be circular, i.e., if my fisrt point of the a set is the last element in the array, the 2nd element will be the 3rd in the list and the 3rd in that set will be the the 2nd element in the list, and so on. They must be consecutive, that's all.

Do you find TDD helps to focus your attention of getting areas of functionality complete before moving onto the next one? I quite often find myself getting a bit overwhelmed when I have an involving task on the go (even if it can be broken down into lots of small chunks), even though I know I'm more than capable of doing the work. For example, a lot of ant manuals suggest the following list of targets: init clean compile build jar test javadoc dist deploy webapp What is the most large build file you met in your life? How many targets did it have and what are they? How often do you need more than predefined set of targets? The goal is to develop some conventions to have standard buildfile template for any project having the notion of the maven-like approach in mind (when a lot of work happens under the cover, convention over configuration).   Hello, Is it possible to create a class dynamically by reading an xml file ( in java preferably) ? if yes, please provide pointers on how to do it. In the process of development, we have come up with a class that has 5 attributes, all these attributes correspond to an entry in the xml file, now if the user adds/modifies the xml entry the object corresponding to it must change automatically, one approach would be generate the source code, before compile time.Is there any other way ?   I've been looking at the new Entity Framework 4 Code Only features, and I really like them. But I'm having a hard time finding good resource on the feature. Everything seems to be spread around blongs here and there, so this make me wonder if it's ready to be used for a serious project? What do you think? Is it ready for production use or should I use the more traditional approach (EDMX designer, POCO objects)? Also, I would like to know if there are any features that Code Only does not support yet, compared to the EDMX designer? What do you think about the Code Only feature? Is it "mature" yet? Thank you.

  I'm working on a Grails web app that would be similar in access patterns to StackOverflow or MyLifeIsAverage - users can vote on entries, and their votes are used to sort a list of entries based on the number of votes. Votes can be placed while the sorted select queries are being performed. Since the selects would lock a large portion of the table, it seems that normal transaction locking would cause updates to take forever (given enough traffic). Has anyone worked on an app with a data access pattern such as this, and if so, did you find a way to allow these updates and selects to happen more or less concurrently? Does anyone know how sites like SO approach this? My thought was to make the sorted selects dirty reads, since it is acceptable if they're not completely up to date all of the time. This is my only idea for possibly improving performance of these selects and updates, but I thought someone might know a better way.

Is it really necessary to spell out OPTIONS in every defined route that restricts the verbs supported?

• Catching errors in ANTLR and finding parent

  I have found out that I can catch errors during parsing by overwriting displayRecognitionError, but how do I find the parent "node" of this error? ex. if I have the grammar: prog: stat expr; stat: STRING; expr: INTEGER; And give it the input "abc def". Then I will get an error at "def" which should be an integer. At this point I then want to get the parent which is "expr" (since it fails inside the INTEGER part) and it's parent "prog". Kind of like printing stack trace in java. I tried to look at the node from RecognitionException parsed to displayRecognitionError, but it is null, and using CommonErrorNode the parent is null. Should I maybe take a completely different approach?

• C# how to dynamically cast an object?

  I am building a helper object that has a property called Mailer. In reality Mailer can be either a System.Net.Mail.MailMessage or a Mono.System.Net.Mail.MailMessage. So I would preferably only want 1 declaration of mailer. For example I don't want: private Mono.Mailing.MailMessage MonoMessage = new Mono.Mailing.MailMessage(); private System.Net.Mail.MailMessage MailMessage = new System.Net.Mail.MailMessage(); I would prefer object mailer; Then in constructor switch (software) { case EnunInternalMailingSoftware.dotnet: this.mailer = new System.Net.Mail.MailMessage(); break; case EnunInternalMailingSoftware.mono: this.mailer = new Mono.Mailing.MailMessage(); break; } The problem is that mailer has no properties at design time. So I can't compile my code. How can this be fixed, am I taking the right approach. Thanks in advance

• Maven 2: How to package current project version in a WAR file?

  I am using Maven 2 to build my Java project and I am looking for a way to present the current version number of the pom.xml to the user (using a Servlet or JSP for example). As far as I can see, the best way would be that Maven packages the version number as a text file into the WAR. This allows me to read the version from that file and present it the way I want. Does anyone know of a plugin that can do something like that for me? Maybe the WAR plugin can be configured to do so? Or maybe using some other approach all together?

• Hibernate Updating an existing entity with a new object

  Hi, Assume I have an entity Foo in the DB. I am parsing some files and creating new Foo objects and would like to check if the parsed Foo object exists in the DB (using a unique attribute). If it exists already update it otherwise save as a new object. What is the best approach? Could I simply set the id and version in the new Foo object? Or would I be better off loading the Foo object from the DB and copying over the properties from the parsed file? Thanks.

  I have a C program which uses Lua for scripting. In order to keep readability and avoid importing several constants within the individual Lua states, I condense a large amount of functions within a simple call (such as "ObjectSet(id, "ANGLE", 45)"), by using an "action" string. To do this I have a large if tree comparing the action string to a list (such as "if(stringcompare(action, "ANGLE") ... else if (stringcompare(action, "X")... etc") This approach works well, and within the program it's not really slow, and is fairly quick to add a new action. But I kind of feel perfectionist. Is there a better way to do this in C? And having Lua in heavy use, maybe there is a way to use it for this purpose? (embedded "chunks" making a dictionary?) Although this part is mostly curiosity.

• How can I use splne() with ggplot?

  I would like to fit my data using spline(y~x) but all of the examples that I can find use a spline with smoothing, e.g. lm(y~ns(x), df=_). I want to use spline() specifically because I am using this to do the analysis represented by the plot that I am making. Is there a simple way to use spline() in ggplot? I have considered the hackish approach of fitting a line using geom_smooth(aes(x=(spline(y~x)$x, y=spline(y~x)$y)) but I would prefer not to have to resort to this. Thanks!

But if i have to distribute it through apple store, how should I make the users of this Iphone Application first create an account with my website. I'm not looking to use any external wrapper, as I found them launching the java process under a nice level lower then themselves which potentially lowers the performance, so it seems only the shell methods are left. I so far found 3 different shell methods: start-stop-daemon RedHat daemon init.d function nohup on start / disown after start What you people are using, and can recommend as the most reliable method?   I have created an Asynchronous version of Rails 3 that I would like to integrate with a WebSocket implementation. I am using EventMachine, Ruby 1.9, Fibers and various em-flavoured libraries as documented by the wickedly good Ilya Grigorik. I have been looking at em-websocket as the handler for WebSocket connections but unsure of the best approach for hooking this into a Rails app. Ideally, this would work in a similar fashion to node.js with Express and Socket.io - incoming connections should be detected and dispatched to the WebSocket handler or the regular rails stack as indicated by the HTTP headers & etc. TL;DR WebSocket handler that plugs into an existing Rails application Transparently dispatch incoming WebSocket requests to endpoints in the app

For each user listing is different and he can filter listing by selecting view from a dropdown. ViewName in the below table is the view which needs to be displayed.
