• How to strink matrix using array mask in Matlab?

  This seems to be a very common problem of mine. data = [1 2 3; 4 5 6]; mask = [true false true]; mask = repmat(mask, 2, 1); data(mask) ==> [1; 4; 3; 6] What I wanted was [1 3; 4 6] Yes I can just reshape it to the right size, but that seems the wrong way to do it. Is there a better way? Why doesn't data(mask) return a matrix when it is actually rectangular? I understand in the general case it may not be, but in my case since my original mask is an array it always will be.

• Languages and development methodologies

  Having never worked with Ruby on Rails, I looked it up on Wikipedia. It says It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development. This got me asking how a given language/framework can be more appropriate for given development methodologies. Are there certain languages that are more friendly for pair programming, for instance? Are there language features that make certain methodologies are more appropriate? Are there features that make certain methodologies impossible? My initial reaction is to dismiss the connection (the design process is a business process, which is more dependent on business needs that language features). But I'm an only programmer within the firm, and I'm a partner, so I get to decide the business needs. What do you think? Also, if the SO community finds that certain languages point towards certain methodologies, what methodology is most common for c#, which is what I use most of the time?

• Young people using Emacs?

  I am a college student that has fallen in love with Emacs. I have used IDEs in the past, and although features like Intellisense made the switch to Emacs very hard, I now think that Emacs is much more powerful, and features like Intellisense can be pretty closely matched by various modes depending on language (and I am not referring to M-/). I am happily writing Elisp code for everything that I need that isn't provided by modes or by Emacs itself and I love the way that it adapts and molds to my needs. However, I do think that its main disadvantage is the fact that it has a pretty steep learning curve and that most new programmers will not even begin to learn it out of many common misconceptions. So, I want to know the opinions of young people (or any person who didn't start using Emacs before there were IDEs) that are Emacs users. Just to get some reassurance that Emacs is not dead within our Eclipse-loving generation =). (Opinions of users of any other highly extensible editor like Jedit are also welcome)

• How to read and modify the colorspace of an image in c#

  I'm loading a Bitmap from a jpg file. If the image is not 24bit RGB, I'd like to convert it. The conversion should be fairly fast. The images I'm loading are up to huge (9000*9000 pixel with a compressed size of 40-50MB). How can this be done? Btw: I don't want to use any external libraries if possible. But if you know of an open source utility class performing the most common imaging tasks, I'd be happy to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

• Spinlocks, How Much Useful Are They?

  How often do you find yourself actually using spinlocks in your code? How common is it to come across a situation where using a busy loop actually outperforms the usage of locks? Personally, when I write some sort of code that requires thread safety, I tend to benchmark it with different synchronization primitives, and as far as it goes, it seems like using locks gives better performance than using spinlocks. No matter for how little time I actually hold the lock, the amount of contention I receive when using spinlocks is far greater than the amount I get from using locks (of course, I run my tests on a multiprocessor machine). I realize that it's more likely to come across a spinlock in "low-level" code, but I'm interested to know whether you find it useful in even a more high-level kind of programming?

• Cannot Debug Visual Basic 6 ActiveX Component On 64-bit OS

  Hi, The situation might sound a bit weird but I have to play with what I have. There's a Win2003 64-bit server OS and a legacy application written using Visual Studio 6. The app consists of two parts: ActiveX components written in VB6 and C++ code which uses them. I need to debug the components' code. I installed Visual Studio 6 on the server and I'm able to step into the component's code. Then I got following situation: 1) C++ code works until it needs to instantiate component A. 2) At this step we switch to VB6 and start debugging Component's A. 3) In the very beginning component A creates an instance of a class C exposed by component B. At this step VB6 debugger shows error message with title "OLEDB32.DLL" and following text: "Failed to load resource DLL C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\OLEDB32R.DLL" Additional information: The last step in initialization of the class C is opening an ADO connection to SQL server using OLEDB provider. I'd appreciate any ideas on how resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

• extract payload from tcpflow output

  Tcpflow outputs a bunch of files, many of which are HTTP responses from a web server. Inside, they contain HTTP headers, including Content-type: , and other important ones. I'm trying to write a script that can extract just the payload data (i.e. image/jpeg; text/html; et al.) and save it to a file [optional: with an appropriate name and file extension]. The EOL chars are \r\n (CRLF) and so this makes it difficult to use in GNU distros (in my experiences). I've been trying something along the lines of: sed /HTTP/,/^$/d To delete all text from the the beginning of HTTP (incl) to the end of \r\n\r\n (incl) but I have found no luck. I'm looking for help from anyone with good experience in sed and/or awk. • How to determine the maximum integer the model can handle?

  "What is the biggest integer the model field that this application instance can handle?" We have sys.maxint, but I'm looking for the database+model instance. We have the IntegerField, the SmallIntegerField, the PositiveSmallIntegerField, and a couple of others beside. They could all vary between each other and each database type. I found the "IntegerRangeField" custom field example here on stackoverflow. Might have to use that, and guess the lowest common denominator? Or rethink the design I suppose. Is there an easy way to work out the biggest integer an IntegerField, or its variants, can cope with?

Last friday we installed some windows updates. After the reboot tomcat doesn't start anymore, with error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap We reduced the parameter -Xmx1024m to -Xmx768m and now tomcat starts.   What is your most commonly used namespace in .NET. I know it will vary greatly based upon the types of projects you develop but the stack overflow audience should provide a fairly decent sample set for the types of .NET projects being developed. I'm simply interest in the name of the namespace (one namespace per answer and no one person should have more than one answer, if someone else has the same answer as you then just upvote their answer). Try to be as specific as possible (so answering System, isn't helpful). • ClearCase: Versioning at file level

  Hi, I have a perculier problem about how to maintain a clearcase project. This project is a xml schema repository where each schema has a version. This repository is common and is used by all the apps in the enterprise. From clearcase prespective the project has a single component. Now the apps can be using different versions of the schema(s). So we are trying to figureout a way to setup the project in such way that a project can have a baseline of what versions of these files are included in a build. The only way we know of how to do this is to create a component for each schema or group of schemas and create a stream for each app to include the components they use. But that would result in too many components. Has anyone dealth with something like this before? We are prepared to restructre the whole project if necessary, so we are open to any idea. • Is `hg pull --rebase` analogous to `svn update`?

  This question assumes there's a "blessed" central repository that members of a team clone from push to when they have contributions that they want other team members to see pull from when they want to see other people's contributions. etc. If so, I would assume hg update is not analogous to svn update (why would there be two commands that do exactly the same thing?). From what I can gather, hg update more like svn revert. Is that correct? • WPF: Aligning the base line of a Label and its TextBox

  Let's say I have a simple TextBox next to a Label: <StackPanel> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Label Margin="3">MyLabel</Label> <TextBox Margin="3" Width="100">MyText</TextBox> </StackPanel> ... </StackPanel> This yields the following result: As you can see, the base lines of MyLabel and MyText are not aligned, which looks ugly. Of course, I could start playing around with the margins until they match up, but since this is such a common requirement I'm sure that WPF provides a much easier and more elegant solution, which I just haven't found yet...

  Hi Guys, I have a 'dog' Entitiy with an @Id and a @TableGenerator ... @TableGenerator(table = "seq", name = "dog_gen", pkColumnName = "seq_name", valueColumnName="seq_val") @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.TABLE, generator = "dog_gen") private Long id; ... Is there a way to reuse the same table generator (dog_gen) in other entity? I want to keep the same id sequence in two independent Entities, say dog=1, dog=2, dog=3, cat=4, cat=5, dog=6 and so on... Both entities don't share a common superclass to implement some kind of inheritance with the id property. If I add the @GeneratedValue( generator="dog_gen") on my cat entity, omitting the @TableGenerator declaration throws an Exception saying it can't find the generator when starting the context. • MSBuild Starter Kits...

  Hi guys Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any MSBuild starter kits out there. What I mean by starter kits is that from the looks of it most builds to kinda the same sort of steps with minor changes here and there (i.e. most builds would run test, coverage, zip up the results, produce a report, deploy etc). Also what most people in general want from a CI build, test build, release build is mostly the same with minor changes here and there. Now don't get me wrong i think that most scripts are fairly different in the end. But I can't help but think that most start out life being fairly similar. Hence does anyone know of any "starter kits" that have like a dev/CI/test/release build with the common tasks that most people would want that you can just start changing and modifying?   I have three objects; Action, Issue and Risk. These all contain a nunber of common variables/attributes (for example: Description, title, Due date, Raised by etc.) and some specific fields (risk has probability). The question is: Should I create 3 separate classes Action, Risk and Issue each containing the repeat fields. Create a parent class "Abstract_Item" containing these fields and operations on them and then have Action, Risk and Issue subclass Abstract_Item. This would adhere to DRY principal.

• Concerns about reading a file in Flash 10

  Hi, I'd like to read an xml file on a user's machine (which can be kind of large). There's no point in me sending the file to my server as I can do all the work I need on the file right on the client's machine. Not sure if this is a good fit though, was wondering if anyone can answer these questions before I dive in: I see at adobe's website that Flash 10 has like 94% penetration, is this true, I thought it was just released not too long ago? After opening the xml file in flash, is it possible to just throw it to a javascript function on my same page for further processing? I'd like to go into flash world for as short a time as possible. Is it at all common to use flash for file upload stuff? I heard aol/flickr are? I would need to buy flash in order to do this right, they don't have a free ide/compiler yet? Thanks

• Selecting data from SQL Server table according to Month

  I have to come up with a way to get data from a SQL server table given it's month There's a smalldatetime type field called "date" in the "events" table and a field from it looks like this: 29/01/2003 17:00:00 It should be one among those that appear in the gridview when I select jan/03 in a given DropDownList control in ASP.NET. What would be the best way to do this? Assuming I only want to go as long as 10 years to the past, wouldn't making a dictionary be a good way? How do I change it so the top month is always the current, and each month another options appeaars in the dropdown ? It should be a common issue, so that shall not be a trick, but I want a good and clean way of doing this, and (since I'm new to asp.net) I myself would come up with something messy after a long time trying. So what I want is: -Select -Best way of populating DropDownList (with the current month always at the top) -Best way to bind the DropDownList user-friendly way of writing months to the select query-friendly way of writing datetimes Info: ASP.NET, (C# or VB.NET), SQL Server 2005

• Hierarchical data in Linq - options and performance

  I have some hierarchical data - each entry has an id and a (nullable) parent entry id. I want to retrieve all entries in the tree under a given entry. This is in a SQL Server 2005 database. I am querying it with LINQ to SQL in C# 3.5. LINQ to SQL does not support Common Table Expressions directly. My choices are to assemble the data in code with several LINQ queries, or to make a view on the database that surfaces a CTE. Which option (or another option) do you think will perform better when data volumes get large? Is SQL Server 2008's HierarchyId type supported in Linq to SQL?

• Windows Workflow foundatation scheduling.

  If I have an ASP.NET app hosting a worflow where a trouble ticket passes through a fairly standard flow....at one point there needs to be an escalation occurring if a ticket has not been looked at or resolved in 6 months. Now lets say the 6 months have passed, but the IIS machine has been rebooted last month and not used. Will the workflow escalate the ticket? When/how does the runtime check conditions on long running processes? Does it scan through the 1000's of workflows looking...or have an events table it checks? Does it even handle this kind of out-of-process workflow? Seems like it would be a very common situation for a WF to handle but i can't seem to find any information.

For instance, in this XML snippet, I would want all the <bar> elements, except the first one: <foo> <Bar>Example</Bar> <Bar>This is an example</Bar> <Bar>Another example</Bar> <Bar>Bar</Bar> </foo> There is no common attribute by which I can filter (like an id tag or something similar). • How to write a linter?

  In my day job I, and others on my team write a lot of hardware models in Verilog-AMS, a language supported primarily by commercial vendors and a few opensource simulator projects. One thing that would make supporting each others code more helpful would be a LINTER that would check our code for common problems and assist with enforcing a shared code formatting style. I of course want to be able to add my own rules and, after I prove their utility to myself, promote them to the rest of the team.. I don't mind doing the work that has to be done, but of course also want to leverage the work of other existing projects. Does having the allowed language syntax in a yacc or bison format give me a leg up? or should I just suck each language statement into a perl string, and use pattern matching to find the things I don't like? (most syntax and compilation errors are easily caught by the commercial tools.. but we have some of our own extentions.)

• zlib memory usage / performance. With 500kb of data.

  Is zLib Worth it? Are there other better suited compressors? I am using an embedded system. Frequently, I have only 3MB of RAM or less available to my application. So I am considering using zlib to compress my buffers. I am concerned about overhead however. The buffer's average size will be 30kb. This probably won't get compressed by zlib. Anyone know of a good compressor for extremely limited memory environments? However, I will experience occasional maximum buffer sizes of 700kb, with 500kb much more common. Is zlib worth it in this case? Or is the overhead too much to justify? My sole considerations for compression are RAM overhead of algorithm and performance at least as good as zlib.
