• Selective replication with CouchDB

  I'm currently evaluating possible solutions to the follwing problem: A set of data entries must be synchonized between multiple clients, where each client may only view (or even know about the existence of) a subset of the data. Each client "owns" some of the elements, and the decision who else can read or modify those elements may only be made by the owner. To complicate this situation even more, each element (and each element revision) must have an unique identifier that is equal for all clients. While the latter sounds like a perfect task for CouchDB (and a document based data model would fit my needs perfectly), I'm not sure if the authentication/authorization subsystem of CouchDB can handle these requirements: While it should be possible to restict write access using validation functions, there doesn't seem to be a way to authorize read access. All solutions I've found for this problem propose to route all CouchDB requests through a proxy (or an application layer) that handles authorization. So, the question is: Is it possible to implement an authorization layer that filters requests to the database so that access is granted only to documents that the requesting client has read access to and still use the replication mechanism of CouchDB? Simplified, this would be some kind of "selective replication" where only some of the documents, and not the whole database is replicated. I would also be thankful for directions to some detailed information about how replication works. The CouchDB wiki and even the "Definite Guide" Book are not too specific about that.

  I am building a part of a simulator. We are building off of a legacy simulator, but going in different direction, incorporating live bits along side of the simulated bits. The piece I am working on has to, effectively route commands from the central controller to the various bits. In the legacy code, there is a const array populated with an enumerated type. A command comes in, it is looked up in the table, then shipped off to a switch statement keyed by the enumerated type. The type enumeration has a choice VALID_BUT_NOT_SIMULATED, which is effectively a no-op from the point of the sim. I need to turn those no-ops into commands to actual other things [new simulated bits| live bits]. The new stuff and the live stuff have different interfaces than the old stuff [which makes me laugh about the shill job that it took to make it all happen, but that is a topic for a different discussion]. I like the array because it is a very apt description of the live thing this chunk is simulating [latching circuits by row and column]. I thought that I would try to replace the enumerated types in the array with pointers to functions and call them directly. This would be in lieu of the lookup+switch.

• Is the Subversion 'stack' a realistic alternative to Team Foundation Server?

  I'm evaluating Microsoft Team Foundation Server for my customer, who currently uses Visual SourceSafe and nothing else. They have explicitly expressed a desire to implement a more rigid and process-driven environment as their application is in production and they have future releases to consider. The particular areas I'm trying to cover are: Configuration management (e.g., source control) Change management (workflow and doco for change requests, tasks) Release management (builds and deployments) Incident and problem management (issues and bugs) Document management (similar to source control, but available via web) Code analysis constraints on check-ins A testing framework Reporting Visual Studio 2008 integration TFS does all of these things quite well, but it's expensive and complex to maintain, and the inexpensive Workgroup edition doesn't scale. We don't get TFS as part of our MSDN subscription. Those problems can be overcome, but before I tell my customer to go the TFS route, which in itself isn't a terrible thing, I wanted to evaluate the alternatives. I know Subversion is often suggested for its configuration management/source control, but what about the other areas? Would a combination of Subversion/NUnit/Wiki/CruiseControl/NAnt/something else satisfy all of these requirements? What tools do I need to include in my evaluation? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with TFS since we're already invested in the Microsoft stack?

• Problem with routes in functional testing

  Hi, I'm making a simple test project to prepare myself for my test. I'm fairly new to nested resources, in my example I have a newsitem and each newsitem has comments. The routing looks like this: resources :comments resources :newsitems do resources :comments end I'm setting up the functional tests for comments at the moment and I ran into some problems. This will get the index of the comments of a newsitem. @newsitem is declared in the setup ofc. test "should get index" do get :index,:newsitem_id => @newsitem assert_response :success assert_not_nil assigns(:newsitem) end But the problem lays here, in the "should get new". test "should get new" do get new_newsitem_comment_path(@newsitem) assert_response :success end I'm getting the following error. ActionController::RoutingError: No route matches {:controller=>"comments", :action=>"/newsitems/1/comments/new"} But when I look into the routes table, I see this: new_newsitem_comment GET /newsitems/:newsitem_id/comments/new(.:format) {:action=>"new", :controller=>"comments"} Can't I use the name path or what I'm doing wrong here? • how do I block my rails app from being hit by bots?

  I'm not even sure I'm using the right terminology, whether this is actually bots or not. I didn't want to use the word 'spam' because it's not like I have comments or posts that are being created/spammed. It looks more like something is making the same repeated request to my domain, which is what made me think it was some kind of bot. I've opened my first rails app to the 'public', which is a really a small group of users, <50 currently. That was last Friday. I started having performance issues today, so I looked at the log and I see tons of these RoutingErrors ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/portalApp/APF/pages/business/util/whichServer.jsp" with {:method=>:get}): They are filling up the log and I'm assuming this is causing the slowdown. Note the .jsp on the end and this is a rails app, so I've got no urls remotely like this in my app. I mean, the /portalApp I don't even have, so I don't know where this is coming from. This is hosted at Dreamhost and I chatted with one of their support people, and he suggested a couple sites that detail using htaccess to block things. But that looks like you need to know the IP or domain that the requests are coming from, which I don't. How can I block this? How can I find the IP or domain from the request? Any other suggestions?

• [^.] causing headache in RewriteRule

  I am struggling with a very basic regex problem in my .htaccess file that I hope someone may be able to shed some light on. The basic premise is that I would like to teach Apache to switch any .html extension into a .var extension. I had thought that the rule would be positively trivial: RewriteRule ^([^.]+)\.html$ $1.var But the [^.] part simply doesn't work. Bizarrely, it works like so RewriteRule ^([^A-Z]+)\.html$ $1.var I do not understand why this latter rule works. Assume I am looking for a file called "index.html" then $1 should match to "index." and the ".html" bit should actually fail to match. To widen the scope of the question slightly, I am actually racking my brain on how to implement a multi-lingual site. I don't like Apache's MultiView option because it forces upon me a flat directory structure with file extensions that aren't recognizable to many development tools. I could go the .var type-map route but am finding that the default config for Apache doesn't support this all that well either (hence my excursions into regex land). So while I am using mod_rewrite, I am thinking that I might go the whole hog: whenever a request for a name.html file is received and this file does not exist, check whether there exists a XX/name.html file instead, where "XX" is the language code according to the user's preferences. This would give me a neater directory structure, though it does perhaps not perform as well as the .var approach in a situation where the language preference of the user's browser is not supported in by my site (in which situation .var would substitute EN or similar). Any thoughts? Thanks.

• How do I get my Windows Forms application to use a custom main function and get access to the Applic

  Hi Folks I am trying to use a Main () function in a class to control the program flow in my vb .net Windows Forms application. I have added a splash screen component and a login screen, and customised my main sdi form. I have set the startup form to be my main function in the Application Page of the Project Designer, and everything seems to work fine(ish). However, I would like to use: Me.MinimumSplashScreenDisplayTime = 5000 to ensure that the splash screen is visible, but it is not recognised by the system unless I tick the Enable Application Framework check box on the Project Designer. If I do this, on startup the program ignores the login and splash screens and all my customisation and just displays a default Form1, even though I have also specified my splash screen in the AF dropdown list. Of course, there are alternative ways to delay a splash screen, such as putting the thread temporarily to sleep (which didn't seem to work), but I suspect that there are other things in the AF that I may want to use. Any suggestions on how I can get round this please, and get a sensible means of controlling program flow? Any thoughts on the best overall structure for organising program flow would also be helpful too. I am concerned both about going down a Microsoft or an alternative custom route that may cause me problems later, as the application becomes more complex. Thankses.

• Authentication and Security in my website - need advice please.

  Hi, I am using database with a list of username/passwords, and a simple web form that allows for users to enter their username/password. When they submit the page, I simply do a stored procedure check to authenticate. If they are authorised, then their user details (e.g. username, dob, address, company address, other important info) are stored in a custom User object and then in a session. This custom User object that I created is used throughout the web application, and also in a sub-site (session sharing). My question/problems are: Is my method of authentication the correct way to do things? I find users complaining that their session have expired although they "were not idle", possibly due the app pool recycling? They type large amounts of text and find that their session had expired and thus lose all the text typed in. I am uncertain whether the session does really reset sporadically but will Forms Authentication using cookies/cookiless resolve the issue? Alternatively should I build and store the User Object in a session, cookie or something else instead in order to be more "correct" and avoid cases like in point #2. If I go down the Forms Authentication route, I believe I cannot store my custom User object in a Forms Authentication cookie so does it mean I would store the UserID and then recreate the user object on every page? Would this not be a huge increase on the server load? Advice and answers much appreciated. L

• Google maps api Directions User defined Steps

  Hi All, I have a google map service with the stores mapped on it. I also have directions service (then you define two addresses or more and it shows you a way on this map, see google map api directions). So I wa?? to show the nearest stores to this way. Of course it could be the store located in the next streat of my way, so it also should be included to the list. So far I just found only an array of steps in the directions object which I get from google maps api. But these steps are predefined by google, so they can be too close one each to other and they also can be too far (if a part of your route is a highway or there is no any special steps on your way etc.) So, what I want to do. I want to make my own steps on the line that I get from google directions (for example to put these steps on my line every 500 meeters etc.), and after that to search every step for any stores around 200 meeters. Is it possible to do? I cannot find any solution of this idea in internet.

• Receiving 404 error when trying to get to MVC application in local IIS

  I have an existing web site setup on my local IIS built with web forms setup in this format: -MainSite -Application1 -Application2 -Application3 There are separate applications in each location, so MainSite has an application, and Application1 has another application and so on. This way development on different applications in the same site can be broken out. I want to add a new Application that is MVC instead of web forms. I created a new MVC project which runs in Cassini just fine, but when I create a new IIS application for it and point it to the MVC project I am unable to navigate to it in the browser and get a 404 error. I am expecting to be able to navigate to http://MainSite/NewMVCApplication/. I want the root of NewMVCApplication to point to my Contacts Controller. • Adding property:value pairs from GooglemapsAPI to an existing json/javascript object

  I am trying to create a script that finds the closest store/location to a customer using googlemapsAPI. So I've got a json object which is a collection of store objects. Using Jquery's .each to iterate through that object, I am grabbing the driving time from the customer to each store. If it finds the directions, It copies the duration of the drive which is an object with the time in seconds and a human readable value. That appears to work, however when I try to sort through all of those store objects with the drivetime added, I cannot read the object copied from google. If I console.log the whole object, 'closest_store', It shows the values I'm looking for. When I try to read the values directly via closest_store.driveTime, Firebug is outputting undefined in the console. • How can you pass an object from the form_for helper to a method?

  So let's say I have a form which is being sent somewhere strange (and by strange we mean, NOT the default route: <% form_for @form_object, :url => {:controller => 'application', :action => 'form_action_thing'} do |f| %> <%= f.text_field :email %> <%= submit_tag 'Login' %> <% end %> Now let's say that we have the method that accepts it. def form_action_thing User.find(????? :email ?????) end My questions are thus: How does can I make the object @form_object available to the receiving method (in this case, form_action_tag)? I've tried params[:form_object], and I've scoured this site and the API, which I have to post below because SO doesn't believe I'm not a spammer (I'm a new member), as well as Googled as many permutations of this idea as I could think of. Nothing. Sorry if I missed something, i'm really trying. How do I address the object, once I've made it accessible to the method? Not params[:form_object], I'm guessing.

• Load function in jquery

  Hi, I am relatively new to jquery and would like to know why the below code wouldn't work. I am trying to access the content from a file residing on my site and not outside. Is it because I have the jquery lib loading from google and not my site? The error message that I get in IE browser is "Access Denied". • Setting up a NAS with Citrix XenServer

  Just a quick query on anyone whos worked with XenServer, I want to setup a NAS at home but with virtualization (I've looked into VMWare Server and KVM, I quite like KVM!) but I was told about XenServer 5.5. I have comomodity hardware (ASUS board, dual core 2.66Ghz CPU with 8Gb RAM), I need to setup a fileserver to house about 2-3Tb worth of data (big chunky video - not porn!). Need to run Linux (preferably CentOS) but also run Windows virtualised for testing. I was thinking of going the XenServer route, however I want to be able to offer a VM access to the 2-3Tb of HDDs (5 HDD drives) directly so it can do its thing (maybe using FreeNAS). Would this be possible with XenServer? Or will I have to do more work - and another box - to offer this? My goals are to use FreeNAS (ZFS!) for the filesserver, CentOS for SVN and aother bits we need to use (LAMP Stack), Windows for our win32 testing all on one box. I see this iSCSI target bits and get scared.

• Socket stops communicating

  I'm running python 2.7 code on a Raspberry Pi that receives serial data from an Arduino, processes it, and sends it to a Windows box over a wifi link. The Pi is wired to a Linksys router running in client bridge mode and that router connects over wifi to another Linksys router to which the Windows box is wired. The code in the Pi runs fine for some (apparently) random interval, and then the Pi becomes unreachable from the Windows box. I'm running PUTTY on the the Windows machine to connect to the Pi and when the fail occurs I get a message saying there's been a network error and the Pi is not reachable. Pinging the Pi from the Windows machine works fine until the error, at which time it produces "Reply from 192.168.0.129: Destination host unreachable." The client bridge router to which the Pi is connected remains reachable. I've got the networking code on the Pi wrapped in an exception handler, and when it fails it shows the following: Ethernet problem: Traceback (most recent call last): File "garage.py", line 108, in module s.connect((host, port)) File "/usr/lib/python2.7/socket.py", line 224, in meth return getattr(self._sock,name)(*args) error: [Errno 113] No route to host None The relevant python code looks like: import socket import traceback host = '192.168.0.129' port = 31415 in the setup, and after serial data has been processed: try: bline = strline.encode('utf-8') s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM) s.connect((host, port)) s.send(bline) s.close() except: print "Ethernet problem: " print traceback.print_exc() Where strline contains the processed data. As I said, this runs fine for a few hours more or less before failing. Any ideas? EDIT: When PUTTY fails its error message is :Network Error: Software caused connection abort."

But this is not working on this case because the routes don't exists without the shop_id parameter, and I don't know how to say to the form_for something like this: <% form_for [:backshop, @item], :shop_id => @shop do |f| %> Because it tries to use the @item like the :shop_id parameter. Or like this <% form_for [:backshop, @shop, @item] do |f| %> Because it tries to build this url: backshop_shop_order_path I Know I can just to extract the form_for declaration from the partial and do different calls on depending if new or edit: <% form_for( @item, :url => backshop_items_path( @shop ) ) do |f| %> and <% form_for( @item, :url => backshop_item_path( @shop, @item ) ) do |f| %> But I just wanted don't do this because I have a bunch of models and is a few boring :) Thanks for any suggestion f.

• Removing index.php on MAMP

  this questions was asked before and has had many responses. The problem is nothing i tried worked. Background: i use MAMP and all of my web project are located under WebProjects which I relocated out of its standard location within the MAMP folder in Applications. so my structure is something like this: Documents/WebProjects/GreatSite/Application/... What happened so far: my understanding is that removing index.php can be done either through httpd.conf or .htaccess. anytime i touched httpd.conf, Apache refuses to start. I tried various edits to .htaccess including the one in codeigniter.com/wiki/mod-rewrite and the last one from a post on SO which is this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /index.php?/$1 [L] this give me the following error when i access the site: An Error Was Encountered Unable to determine what should be displayed. A default route has not been specified in the routing file. I have updated config.php to have $config['index_page'] = ''; and i have placed the .htaccess file in the GreatSite folder. One other note, my CI system folder is up a level from GreatSite. Not sure if this has any impact. also, apache has the module loaded. so, I'm hoping someone has successfully done this on MAMP and could provide direction specifically around the content of their .htaccess (or even httpd.conf), it's location and any other mods they had to make to get this going. thanks

  I’ve read the manual on URI routing and views and something is not clicking with me. In my views folder, I have a subfolder called products. In there is a file called product_view. In my controller, I have: function index() { $data['title'] = 'Product Overview'; $data['main_content'] = 'products/product_view'; $this->load->view('templates/main.php', $data); } The template loads a header view, a footer view and a navigation view, plus the view as a main content variable. In my URI routing, I have: $route['products/product-overview'] = 'products/product_view']; This causes a 404 error when I try to go to domain.com/products/product-overview. Do I need to do something with my .htaccess? If so, what? Here is my .htaccess: Options +FollowSymLinks Options -Indexes DirectoryIndex index.php RewriteEngine on RewriteCond $1 !^(index\.php|resources|images|css|js|robots\.txt|favicon\.ico) RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L,QSA] I’d appreciate some specific help, as the documentation isn’t specific on how to address this.   Hello; I am trying to create an app that will perform actions on specific times (much like the Windows Task Scheduler). I am currently using Process.Start() to lunch the file (or exe) required by the task. I am initiating a process by calling a file (an .mp3) and the process starts WMP (since it is the default application), so far so good. Now I wan't to kill that process. I know that it is normal behavior for the Process.Start(string, string) to return nothing (null in C#) in this case. So I am asking how can i close WMP when I called it through Process.Start(string, string)?? Edit: Please note that I am not opening WMP directly with Process.Start() and this is the line with which I run the process: VB: Me._procs.Add(Process.Start(Me._procInfo)) C#: this._procs.Add(Process.Start(this._procInfo)) _procInfo is a ProcessStartInfo instance. _procInfo.FileName is "C:\route\myFile.mp3". That is why WMP opens. In any case, all of the Start() methods, except for the instance-one which returns a boolean, return nothing (null in C#), because WMP is not the process that was directly created (please note that WMP is run and the song does play).

• Doing a DELETE request from <a> tag without constructing forms?

  Is there any way to force an <a href> to do a delete request when clicked instead of a regular GET? The "Rails" way is to dynamically generate a <form> tag that adds the appropriate params so that it gets routed to the right place, however I'm not too fond of that much DOM manipulation for such a simple task. I thought about going the route of something like: $("a.delete").click(function(){ var do_refresh = false; $.ajax({ type: "DELETE", url: "my/path/to/delete", success: function(){ do_refresh = true; }, failure: function(){ alert("There is an error"); } }); return do_return; //If this is false, no refresh would happen. If it //is true, it will do a page refresh. }); I'm not sure if the above AJAX stuff will work, as it's just theoretical. Is there any way to go about this? Note: Please don't recommend that I use the rails :method => :delete on link_to, as I'm trying to get away from using the rails helpers in many senses as they pollute your DOM with obtrusive javascript. I'd like this solution to be put in an external JS file and be included as needed.

  when I click an item in maps, it will appears positive button that reads "Route to". Question, how do I start activity from that positive button?
