What would I use for ffmpeg switches such that all the video settings and codec remain the same, but only the audio codec and settings change?     My Linksys E4200 is configured for Remote Management, but the router is not accepting the connections. Here's the configuration under Administration Management Remote Management Access: Remote Management: Enabled Access via: HTTP Remote Upgrade: Disabled Allowed Remote IP Address: Any IP Address Remote Management Port: 8080 The router is setup to use 192.168.10.41 as its static Internet IP address, and 192.168.35.1 as its LAN IP address. I can access the router just fine via its LAN IP address, but I can't make a connection using http://192.168.10.41:8080. I've tried variations of the settings above (enabled HTTPS, enabled Remote Upgrade, set an IP range of 192.168.10.1-254) but nothing has worked yet. Hoping someone can at least point me in the right direction. Thanks. Update: To clarify, I have a wired router that connects straight to the T1 modem. It's configured to use 192.168.10.1-254 as its internal LAN range. The E4200 wireless router in question is on that LAN using 192.168.10.41 as its WAN IP address. The E4200's internal LAN range is 192.168.35.1-254. I'm not trying to access the E4200 from the Internet, I'm just trying to access it from its WAN IP address. Thanks.

  • Handy SQL Server Functions Series (HSSFS) Part 2.0 - Prelude to Parsing Patterns Properly

    In Part 1 of the series I wrote about 2 lesser-known and somewhat undocumented functions. In this part, I'm going to cover some familiar string functions like Substring(), Parsename(), Patindex(), and Charindex() and delve into their strengths and weaknesses. I'm also splitting this part up into sub-parts to help focus on a particular technique and/or problem with the technique, hence the Part 2.0. Consider this a composite post, or com-post, if you will. (It may just turn out to be a pile of sh_t after all) I'll be using a contrived example, perhaps the most frustratingly useful, or usefully frustrating, function in SQL Server: @@VERSION. Contrived, because there are better ways to get the information (which I'll cover later); frustrating, because of the way Microsoft formatted the value; and useful because it does have 1 or 2 bits of information not found elsewhere.     I am trying to get a sphere curl based on the swipe. I know this has been asked many times, but still it's yearning to be answered. I have managed to add force on the direction of the swipe and it works near perfect. I also have all the swipe positions stored in a list. Now I would like to know how can the curl be achieved. I believe the the curve in the swipe can be calculated by the Vector dot product If theta is 0, then there is no need to add the swipe. If it is not, then add the curl.   • Exploring TCP throughput with DTrace

    One key measure to use when assessing TCP throughput is assessing the amount of unacknowledged data in the pipe. This is sometimes termed the Bandwidth Delay Product (BDP) (note that BDP is often used more generally as the product of the link capacity and the end-to-end delay). In DTrace terms, the amount of unacknowledged data in bytes for the connection is the different between the next sequence number to send and the lowest unacknoweldged sequence number (tcps_snxt - tcps_suna). According to the theory, when the number of unacknowledged bytes for the connection is less than the receive window of the peer, the path bandwidth is the limiting factor for throughput. In other words, if we can fill the pipe without the peer TCP complaining (by virtue of its window size reaching 0), we are purely bandwidth-limited. If the peer's receive window is too small however, the sending TCP has to wait for acknowledgements before it can send more data. In this case the round-trip time (RTT) limits throughput. In such cases the effective throughput limit is the window size divided by the RTT, e.g. if the window size is 64K and the RTT is 0.5sec, the throughput is 128K/s. So a neat way to visually determine if the receive window of clients may be too small should be to compare the distribution of BDP values for the server versus the client's advertised receive window. If the BDP distribution overlaps the send window distribution such that it is to the right (or lower down in DTrace since quantizations are displayed vertically), it indicates that the amount of unacknowledged data regularly exceeds the client's receive window, so that it is possible that the sender may have more data to send but is blocked by a zero-window on the client side. We can see that the receiver's advertised window is in the 32768-65535 range, while the amount of unacknowledged data in the pipe is largely in the 65536-131071 range. What's going on here? Surely in a case like this we should see zero-window events, since the amount of data in the pipe regularly exceeds the window size of the receiver. We can see that we don't see any zero-window events since the SWND distribution displays no 0 values - it stays within the 32768-65535 range. The explanation is straightforward enough. TCP Window scaling is in operation for this connection - the Window Scale TCP option is used on connection setup to allow a connection to advertise (and have advertised to it) a window greater than 65536 bytes. In this case the scaling shift is 1, so this explains why the SWND values are clustered in the 32768-65535 range rather than the 65536-131071 range - the SWND value needs to be multiplied by two since the reciever is also scaling its window by a shift factor of 1.   • How to find and fix issue with Pound and HAProxy

    Pound sits in front of HAProxy (on the same box) to perform SSL off-load. Requests are passed to 127.0.0.1:80 where HAProxy then balances the requests across backend servers for a hosted ASP .NET web app. A user is getting HTTP error 500 (Internal Server Error) returned to their browser this morning and I can see it is comming from Pound. They see no log entry in their web app (IIS) server logs, so its not hitting the back end servers. I think the problem is possibly with HAProxy.   • NFS issue brings down entire vSphere ESX estate

    I experienced an odd issue this morning where an NFS issue appeared to have taken down the majority of my VMs hosted on a small vSphere 5.0 estate. The infrastructure itself is 4x IBM HS21 blades running around 20 VMs. The storage is provided by a single HP X1600 array with attached D2700 chassis running Solaris 11. There's a couple of storage pools on this which are exposed over NFS for the storage of the VM files, and some iSCSI LUNs for things like MSCS shared disks. Normally, this is pretty stable, but I appreciate the lack of resiliancy in having a single X1600 doing all the storage. It turned out that pretty much all of the VMs were inaccessible, and that the ESX hosts either were describing each VM as 'powered off', 'powered on', or 'unavailable'. The VMs described as 'powered on' where not in any way reachable or responding to pings, so this may be lies. There's absolutely no indication on the X1600 that anything was awry, and nothing on the switches to indicate any loss of connectivity. I only managed to resolve the issue by rebooting the ESX hosts in turn. I have a number of questions: What the hell happened? If this was a temporary NFS failure, why did it put the ESX hosts into a state from which a reboot was the only recovery? In the future, when the NFS server goes a little off-piste, what would be the best approach to add some resilience? I've been looking at budgeting for next year and potentially have budget to purchase another X1600/D2700/disks, would an identical mirrored disk setup help to mitigate these sorts of failures automatically?   • Use DivX settings to encode to mp4 with ffmpeg

    I'm used to use VirtualDub to encode a video to AVI container with DivX-codec (and MP3 for audio). Now I'm planning to use ffmpeg to encode videos to MP4 container with h264-codec. What I've figured out is that I need to use libx264 and one of those presets to make anything work. However, I'm amazed about the video bitrate ffmpeg uses for encoding.     We are running two servers with identical software setup but different hardware. The first one is a VM on VMWare on a normal tower server with dual core xeons, 16 GB RAM and a 7200 RPM drive. The second one is a VM on XenServer on a powerful brand new rack server, with 4 core xeons and shared storage. We are running Dynamics AX 2012 and SQL Server 2008 R2. When I insert 15 000 records into a table on the slow tower server (as a test), it does so in 13 seconds. On the fast server it takes 33 seconds. I re-ran these tests several times with the same results. I have a feeling it is some sort of IO bottleneck, so I ran SQLIO on both. However, the 64 write test is incredibly slow on the rack server. (68 mb/sec on the slow tower vs 21 mb/s on the rack). The read speed for 64k also seems slow. Is this enough to say there is some sort of bottleneck with the shared storage? I need to know if I can take this evidence and say we need to launch an investigation into this. Any help is appreciated.

  • How to reduce iOS AVPlayer start delay

    Note, for the below question: All assets are local on the device -- no network streaming is taking place. The videos contain audio tracks. I'm working on an iOS application that requires playing video files with minimum delay to start the video clip in question. Unfortunately we do not know what specific video clip is next until we actually need to start it up. Specifically: When one video clip is playing, we will know what the next set of (roughly) 10 video clips are, but we don't know which one exactly, until it comes time to 'immediately' play the next clip. What I've done to look at actual start delays is to call addBoundaryTimeObserverForTimes on the video player, with a time period of one millisecond to see when the video actually started to play, and I take the difference of that time stamp with the first place in the code that indicates which asset to start playing. From what I've seen thus-far, I have found that using the combination of AVAsset loading, and then creating an AVPlayerItem from that once it's ready, and then waiting for AVPlayerStatusReadyToPlay before I call play, tends to take between 1 and 3 seconds to start the clip. I've since switched to what I think is roughly equivalent: calling [AVPlayerItem playerItemWithURL:] and waiting for AVPlayerItemStatusReadyToPlay to play. Roughly same performance. One thing I'm observing is that the first AVPlayer item load is slower than the rest. Seems one idea is to pre-flight the AVPlayer with a short / empty asset before trying to play the first video might be of good general practice. [http://stackoverflow.com/questions/900461/slow-start-for-avaudioplayer-the-first-time-a-sound-is-played] I'd love to get the video start times down as much as possible, and have some ideas of things to experiment with, but would like some guidance from anyone that might be able to help. Update: idea 7, below, as-implemented yields switching times of around 500 ms. This is an improvement, but it it'd be nice to get this even faster. Idea 1: Use N AVPlayers (won't work) Using ~ 10 AVPPlayer objects and start-and-pause all ~ 10 clips, and once we know which one we really need, switch to, and un-pause the correct AVPlayer, and start all over again for the next cycle. I don't think this works, because I've read there is roughly a limit of 4 active AVPlayer's in iOS. There was someone asking about this on StackOverflow here, and found out about the 4 AVPlayer limit: fast-switching-between-videos-using-avfoundation Idea 2: Use AVQueuePlayer (won't work) I don't believe that shoving 10 AVPlayerItems into an AVQueuePlayer would pre-load them all for seamless start. AVQueuePlayer is a queue, and I think it really only makes the next video in the queue ready for immediate playback. I don't know which one out of ~10 videos we do want to play back, until it's time to start that one. ios-avplayer-video-preloading Idea 3: Load, Play, and retain AVPlayerItems in background (not 100% sure yet -- but not looking good) I'm looking at if there is any benefit to load and play the first second of each video clip in the background (suppress video and audio output), and keep a reference to each AVPlayerItem, and when we know which item needs to be played for real, swap that one in, and swap the background AVPlayer with the active one. Rinse and Repeat. The theory would be that recently played AVPlayer/AVPlayerItem's may still hold some prepared resources which would make subsequent playback faster. So far, I have not seen benefits from this, but I might not have the AVPlayerLayer setup correctly for the background. I doubt this will really improve things from what I've seen. Idea 4: Use a different file format -- maybe one that is faster to load? I'm currently using .m4v's (video-MPEG4) H.264 format. I have not played around with other formats, but it may well be that some formats are faster to decode / get ready than others. Possible still using video-MPEG4 but with a different codec, or maybe quicktime? Maybe a lossless video format where decoding / setup is faster? Idea 5: Combination of lossless video format + AVQueuePlayer If there is a video format that is fast to load, but maybe where the file size is insane, one idea might be to pre-prepare the first 10 seconds of each video clip with a version that is boated but faster to load, but back that up with an asset that is encoded in H.264. Use an AVQueuePlayer, and add the first 10 seconds in the uncompressed file format, and follow that up with one that is in H.264 which gets up to 10 seconds of prepare/preload time. So I'd get 'the best' of both worlds: fast start times, but also benefits from a more compact format. Idea 6: Use a non-standard AVPlayer / write my own / use someone else's Given my needs, maybe I can't use AVPlayer, but have to resort to AVAssetReader, and decode the first few seconds (possibly write raw file to disk), and when it comes to playback, make use of the raw format to play it back fast. Seems like a huge project to me, and if I go about it in a naive way, it's unclear / unlikely to even work better. Each decoded and uncompressed video frame is 2.25 MB. Naively speaking -- if we go with ~ 30 fps for the video, I'd end up with ~60 MB/s read-from-disk requirement, which is probably impossible / pushing it. Obviously we'd have to do some level of image compression (perhaps native openGL/es compression formats via PVRTC)... but that's kind crazy. Maybe there is a library out there that I can use? Idea 7: Combine everything into a single movie asset, and seekToTime One idea that might be easier than some of the above, is to combine everything into a single movie, and use seekToTime. The thing is that we'd be jumping all around the place. Essentially random access into the movie.   • Problem with TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTime: missed the Daylight Saving switch.

    My web app runs on .Net 3.5, all of the dates are saved on the DB in UTC time (not in user time). When I want to display a date I convert it to user date (from UTC) //Get the current datetime of the user exp: GMT TO ISRAEL +2 public static DateTime GetUserDateTime(DateTime dateUTC) { string userTzId = "Israel Standard Time"; TimeZoneInfo userTZ = TimeZoneInfo.FindSystemTimeZoneById(userTzId); dateUTC = DateTime.SpecifyKind(dateUTC, DateTimeKind.Utc); DateTime ret = TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTime(dateUTC, TimeZoneInfo.Utc, userTZ); return ret; } Until now it worked fine but I have users from Israel (GMT +2), and Israel switched to Daylight saving time on 26/3/10 so now it's (GMT +3). For some reason the TimeZoneInfo.ConvertTime don't know the Daylight saving time switch is on 26/3/10 so it still converts to GMT +2. The strange thing is that on localhost it works fine, I set up a test page: DateTime userdate = GetUserDateTime(DateTime.UtcNow); string str2 = "UserDateTime = " + userdate.ToString("dd/MM/yy") + " " + userdate.ToString("HH:mm"); On the Server (windows 2003 set to UTC time) it shows the wrong time (+2): UserDateTime = 27/03/10 21:38 On localhost (windows XP set to Israel Time) it shows the correct time (+3): UserDateTime = 27/03/10 22:38 How can I update the TimeZoneInfo that the Daylight saving time switch in Israel was on the 26/3/10?     First off, we are using JPA 2.0 and Hibernate 3.5 as persistence provider on a PostgreSQL database. We successfully use the sequence of the database via the JPA 2.0 annotations as an auto-generated value for single-field-surrogate-keys and all works fine. Now we are implementing a bi-temporal database-scheme that requires a mixed key in the following manner: Table 1: id (pk, integer, auto-generated-sequence) validTimeBegin (pk, dateTime) validTimeEnd (dateTime) firstName (varChar) Now we have a problem. You see, if we INSERT a new element, the field id is auto-generated and that's fine. So my question is: Is there a way to tell hibernate via JPA to stop auto-generating the id-field in the case I want to generate a new variety of the same person and go on as usual in every other case or do I have to take over the whole id-generation with custom code?     My root server at 1&1 was unresponsive on HTTP and SSH, so I logged into the serial console . It flooded my connection with endless error messages like quoted below. I initiated a reboot and now everything seems to work properly. After googling, I installed smartctl and ran a short self test, which told me the device was healthy. Is this likely a disk failure soon to happen or could it be just some program going wild? I assume, the swap device could also grow full when huge amounts of memory get consumed by a buggy program? How can I find out for sure? The sever was already unresponsive a week ago when I just restarted it without proper investigation. The server is running on CentOS.
