  Requirements: tiny WinForms client app (C# 4.0, WinForms or WPF) a few users working simultinausly no database service at all - the whole engine as *.DLLs inside client apps database available as shared folder on one computer at least simple concurrrency checks compatible with nHibernate or EntityFramework / NET 4.0 backup as simple as copying files from shared folder - assuming no running clients at the moment no stored procedures/triggers required data size - a few tables and a few thousands rows after 2 years Nice to have: user access rights encrypted data I'm trying to choose between: MS Access SqlLite SqlServer Compact Edition. Can you recommend which one should be the best for these requirements?

• Combining Session and Cache

  To make my extranet web application even faster/more scalable I think of using some of the caching mechanisms. For some of the pages we'll use HTML caching, please ignore that technique for this question. E.g.: at some point in time 2500 managers will simultaneously login on our application (most of them with the same Account/Project) I think of storing an Account-cachekey and Project-cachekey into the user's Session and use that to get the item from the Cache. I could have simply stored the Account into the session, but that would result in 2500 of the same Accounts in memory. Is there a better solution to this or does it make sense :)?

  I'm looking into developing a multi-tenant SaaS application, and I found several sites that describe a solid way to separate the data using tenantIDs and updateable views. e.g. This blog post It all hinges on the ability to have your user accounts authenticated from a master users table and then having their respective database connections use those user-specific credentials. This way, the views can pull the userid and map it to the tenantID to display that user's view. However, most PHP frameworks tend to be very static when it comes to database connections (stored in text config files). They appear to be at odds. Does anyone know: a) how to make CodeIgniter handle this gracefully? b) a different PHP framework that might?

• fetch only first row from oracle - is it faster?

  My main goal with this question is optimization and faster run time. After doing lot of processing in the Stored Proc I finally return a count like below: OPEN cv_1 FOR SELECT COUNT(*) num_of_members FROM HOUSEHOLD_MEMBER a, HOUSEHOLD b WHERE RTRIM(LTRIM(a.mbr_last_name)) LIKE v_MBR_LAST_NAME || '%' AND a.number = '01' AND a.code = v_CODE AND a.ssn_head = v_SSN_HEAD AND TO_CHAR( a.mbr_dob, 'MM/DD/YYYY') = v_DOB; But in my code that is calling the SP does not need the actual count. It just cares that count is greater than 1. Question: How can I change this to return just 1 or 0. 1 when count is 0 and 0 when count 1. Will it be faster to do this rather than returning the whole count?

  I was thinking about making a little crop/resize batch processor online, and wanted to know if there was a way for me to do the following: upload image and specify dimensions click "process" and app resizes image image downloads automatically to wherever it was I uploaded it (say from my desktop), but with a new name (based on the time for example). This would make it so I could host a free image processor that never stored any data other than tempfiles. Is that possible? Something like Rails' send_file method, but I'm using Sinatra and am looking for something in pure ruby.

• Newbie Question: Read and Process a List of Text Files

  I'm completely new to .NET and am trying as a first step to write a text processing program. The task is simple: I have a list of 10,000 text files stored in one folder, and I'm trying to read each one, store it as a string variable, then run it through a series of functions, then save the final output to another folder. So far I can only manage to manually input the file path like this (in VB.NET): Dim tRead As System.IO.StreamReader Public Function ReadFile() As String Dim EntireFile As String tRead = File.OpenText("c:\textexample\00001.txt") EntireFile = tRead.ReadToEnd Return EntireFile End Function Public Function Step1() .....   Hi everybody, I have a strange problem sometimes when I try to merge a data table with a typed dataset my data table is filled in with a stored procedure and when I checked the content of this table it is ok, everything is in there straight after I merge it with my core typed dataset like this : MyTypedDataSet.TheTable.Clear(); MyTypedDataSet.TheTable.Merge(MyDataTable); and now if i check the table in the dataset everything is ok except only one single field on one single row which is DBNull, that makes no sense because the source data table contains the good integer vaue. The comments are stored in a different table from the stories. The code above does not return any values and doesn't show any errors. Could someone please help?

• If I CFRelease() an image in core data, how do I get it back?

  My iphone app plays a slide show made up of 5 user images.  These images are stored using core data.  I was noticing that memory was building up every time a different slide show was played and it was not releasing any of the previously played slide shows.   These images are showing up in Object Allocations as CFData. So I tried releasing this data in the dealloc method CFRelease(slideshow.image1); CFRelease(slideshow.image2); CFRelease(slideshow.image3); CFRelease(slideshow.image4); CFRelease(slideshow.image5); This releases the previous slideshow great...BUT when I go back to view that same slideshow again, it crashes.   I am guessing that I need to alloc/init these images again, but I am not sure how?  Or maybe I should be managing this memory in a different way?

  Hi, We have nested folders with parent-child relationship. We use MySQL MyISAM DB. The data is stored in the DB in the following manner. Every time a child folder is created in the nested structure, the previous parentID is added. I want to get the RootFolderID of a folder which is added in the hierarchy as tabulated below. FoldID ParentID |RootFolderID -----------------|------------------- 1 0 | 0 2 1 | 1 3 2 | 1 4 3 | 1 5 4 | 1 Please let me know how to get the root folderID and populate it in the RootFolderID column after a folder is created each time. • How to send reminder notifications to subscribers for renewal from SQL Server 2005?

  I have a table in SQL DB, namely dbo.subscribers, it contains following columns: -SubscriberID -JoinDateTime The business logic says a subscription last for 2 weeks and a reminder should be sent after 7 days from the JoinDateTime. The way that the system was designed to send reminders are via a URL call, e.g. http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/renew_userid=SubscriberID/ and that can only be called from our webserver which is the only whitelisted IP machines given. Currently there is a windows service written to query the DB once a day at midnight to grab all expiring subscribers and send them reminders, however this batch approach only sends reminders to the nearest date, well, I could have set the interval down from 1 day to 1 hour such that the service can send notifications out closer to the exact JoinDateTime + 7 days requirements. I have heard a stored procedure can be written and perform task like this to a nearly real-time manner, if yes, please give me some hints on how to do it. Another question is - is SSRS bit of an overkill to perform things like this? Please advice. TIA

• WPF - How do I style a row based on a binding property value?

  Hey! So I am trying to bind a collection of objects (IList<) to a WPF datagrid. I would like to make the row background a different color if the 'artist' property is null or empty. I am checking the value stored at the property on the LoadingRow datagrid event. Currently my implementation seems to style all of the rows with an empty or null 'artist' property correctly. The problem is that is also styles the rows where the property is not null or empty in some cases. So some rows are given the red background even though the rows 'artist' property is not null. Can anyone tell me why this could be??   Can anyone advise if it is a good idea to have HBase as primary data source for web-based application? My primary concern is HBase's response time to queries. Is it possible to have sub-second response? edit: more details about the app itself. Amount of data: ~500GB of text data, expect to reach 1TB soon Number of concurrent users using the app: up to 50 The app will be used to present reports about data stored in HBase, like how many times keyword "X" occured in last 24h. For ~80% of requests from that app I will know the exact key, 20% will be scans (I'm looking into HBase schema design related topics to make it run fast)

  I need to store a undirected graph in a Google App Engine database. For optimization purposes, I am thinking to use database indexes. Using Google App Engine, is there any way to define the columns of a database table to create its index? I will need some optimization, since my app uses this stored undirected graph on a content-based filtering for item recommendation. Also, the recommender algorithm updates the weights of some graph's edges. If it is not possible to use database indexes, please suggest another method to reduce query time for the graph table. I believe my algorithm does more data retrieval operations from graph table than write operations. PS: I am using Python.

  Hi, i googled for an hour now but maybe my Google-Fu is just too weak, i couldn't find a solution. I want to create an application that queries a service via JSON requests (all data and backend/business logic is stored in the service). With plain PHP it's simple enough since i just make a curl request, json_decode the result and get what i need. This already works quite well. A request might look like this: Call http://service-host/userlist with body: {"logintoken": "123456-1234-5678-901234"} Get Result: { "status": "Ok", "userlist":[ {"name": "foo", "id": 1}, {"name": "bar", "id": 2} ] } Now we want to get that into the Zend Framework since it's a hobby project and we want to learn about Zend. The problem is that all information i could find use a Database. Is there even a way to create a Zend Project that does not use a Database? And how can i write a model that represents the actions instead of objects and object-relations?

• Parse a string containing percent sign into decimal

  I have a simple string containing VAT-percantage value that needs to be stored in a decimal. The string looks like this: "19.00%". When I use the decimal.Parse() methode I always get an FormatException. Code looks like this NumberFormatInfo nfi = new NumberFormatInfo() { PercentDecimalSeparator = ".", PercentSymbol = "%" }; decimal.Parse("19.00%",NumberStyles.Any, nfi); I know, that it would be possible (in the excample above) to simply remove the %-char from the string and then parse. But isn't there a solution to use built in parsing, which can be used without testing the string for the type of number the user typed in.

  How can I convert the following? 2934 (integer) to B76 (hex) Let me explain what I am trying to do. I have User IDs in my database that are stored as integers. Rather than having users reference their IDs I want to let them use the hex value. The main reason is because it's shorter. So not only do I need to go from integer to hex but I also need to go from hex to integer. Is there an easy way to do this in C#?

• Is it possible to get last modified date from an assets file?

  Hi, all Bizarre question: is it possible to get the last modified date of a file in the assets folder, or would that be pointless and impossible? I ask because I'm copying a read-only database out of there into the data folder on application start up, but would rather only perform the copy if the existing file is older than the one stored in the assets folder (or if the file doesn't exist). If that's not possible, anyone know of a better convention? I can post that in a separate question if needed. TIA!

  In msbuild/xbuild I'd like to have a "libPath" property which can be ovveridden on the commandline using /p:libpath="/path/to/all/libs". But when this property is undefined I want to call pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage to get the current systems path. I thought like here I need the output of a command to be stored in a Property. The command always returns one line of output. I have tryied something like <PropertyGroup> <LibPath /> </PropertyGroup> <Task ....> <Exec Command="pkg-config --retrieve-Path somePackage" Condition="$(LibPath)' == ''"> <OutputTaskParameter="output" PropertyName="LibPath" /> </Exec> </Task> But that didn't work.

• Preserving indentation when inserting HTML from MySQL

  I am using MySQL and PHP to populate parts of a site, often with HTML stored in a TEXT field. I like to keep my HTML indented so that the source is neat and easy to read, for example: <body> <div> <p>Blahblah</p> </div> </body> However, when the HTML is pulled from MySQL, I end up with: <body> <div> <p>Blahblahblah</p> </div> </body> This is quite ugly when there is a large amount of HTML being inserted into a DIV that is significantly indented. How can I stop this from happening? FYI, I use wordwrap() to keep each line from being too long.

• How can I Query only __key__ on a Google Appengine PolyModel child?

  So the situation is: I want to optimize my code some for doing counting of records. So I have a parent Model class Base, a PolyModel class Entry, and a child class of Entry Article: How would I query Article.key so I can reduce the query load but only get the Article count. My first thought was to use: q = db.GqlQuery("SELECT __key__ from Article where base = :1", i_base) but it turns out GqlQuery doesn't like that because articles are actually stored in a table called Entry. Would it be possible to Query the class attribute? something like: q = db.GqlQuery("select __key__ from Entry where base = :1 and :2 in class", i_base, 'Article') neither of which work. Turns out the answer is even easier. But I am going to finish this question because I looked everywhere for this. q = db.GqlQuery("select __key__ from Entry where base = :1 and class = :2", i_base, 'Article')
