  • Optimizing a fluid grid layout

    I recently just added a grid layout, but I can't figure out how to make my links work. The grid that I used is the 1140 one at http://cssgrid.net/. I studied the source code of that website, and tried to make my page like theirs, but when I put everything in it made mine worse, and the grid didn't even work. This is how my website is supposed to look http://spencedesign.netau.net/singaporehome.html and this is how it does http://spencedesign.netau.net/home.html And when you reduce the size, it doesn't look like it's supposed to. When you minimize it I want the pictures(links) to be two per row, then one per row depending on how small the page is. I also want the quote to turn into different rows when it is too small for it. But I can't figure out how to make the page look normal regularly let alone make it look good with a smaller browser. Thanks!

  • C++. How to define template parameter of type T for class A when class T needs a type A template parameter?

    Executor class has template of type P and it takes a P object in constructor. Algo class has a template E and also has a static variable of type E. Processor class has template T and a collection of Ts. Question how can I define Executor< Processor<Algo> > and Algo<Executor> ? Is this possible?     There are lots of programming and architecture patterns. Patterns allow to make code cleaner, reusable, more testable & at last (but not at least) to feel the follower a real cool developer. How do you rank these considerations for you? What does affect you most when you decide to apply pattern? I wonder how many times code reusability (especially for MVP, MVC patterns) was important? For example DAL library often shared between projects (it's reusable) but how often controllers/views (abstracted via interfaces) are reused?

  • How can I position QDockWidgets as the screen shot shows using code?

    I want a Qt window to come up with the following arrangement of dock widgets on the right. Qt allows you to provide an argument to the addDockWidget method of QMainWindow to specify the position (top, bottom, left or right) but apparently not how two QDockWidgets placed on the same side will be arranged.     Hi, I need to create an XML schema definition (XSD) that describes Java objects. I was wondering how to do this when the objects in question inherit from a common base class with a type parameter. public abstract class Rule<T> { ... } public abstract class TimeRule extends Rule<XTime> { ... } public abstract class LocationRule extends Rule<Location> { ... } public abstract class IntRule extends Rule<Integer> { ... } .... (where XTime and Location are custom classes define elsewhere) How would I go about constructing an XSD that such that I can have XML nodes that represent each of the subclasses of Rule<T> - without the XSD for each of them repeating their common contents?   • Architecture of a single-page JavaScript web application?

    How should a complex single-page JS web application be structured on the client-side? Specifically I'm curious about how to cleanly structure the application in terms of its model objects, UI components, any controllers, and objects handling server persistence. MVC seemed like a fit at first. But with UI components nested at various depths (each with their own way of acting on/reacting to model data, and each generating events which they themselves may or may not handle directly), it doesn't seem like MVC can be cleanly applied. (But please correct me if that's not the case.) -- (This question resulted in two suggestions of using ajax, which is obviously needed for anything other than the most trivial one-page app.)

  • Why are controls within custom panel (C# winforms) disappearing in designer?

    I have been able to create a custom C# winforms control that is basically a panel with a fixed banner (header/footer). I want to base other user controls on this "banner panel". I've gotten past the problem with the designer here. I can successfully add controls to the inner content panel. Everything looks fine while designing. However, when I recompile, the controls I added to the content panel disappear. They are still there (in code) but aren't displayed in the designer. Is there any thing that I need to do to set the drawing order of the controls?

    well I see some interesting discussions here about static vs. dynamic typing I generally prefer static typing, due to compile type checking, better documented code,etc. However I do agree that they do clutter up the code if done the way Java does it, for example. so Im about to start building a language of my own and type inference is one of the things that I want to implement, in a functional style language... I do understand that it is a big subject, and Im not trying to create something that has not been done before, just basic inferencing... any pointers on what to read up that will help me with this? preferably something more pragmatic/practical as oppose to more theoretical category theory/type theory texts. If there's a implementation discussion text out here, with data structures/algorithms, that would just be lovely much appreciated

  • Need some clarification on the ANSI/SPARC 3-tier database architecture.

    Hi there, I'm currently revising for a databases exam and looking over some past papers, but there's one question that I'm slightly unsure about and was wondering if someone could offer some assistance. "Describe EACH of the THREE levels of the ANSI SPARC 3 level architecture. Your answer should include the purpose of EACH of the schemas, the level of abstraction they provide and the software tools that would be used to access and support them." As I understand it (although please correct me if I'm wrong): the internal schema specifies the physical storage of the data; the conceptual schema specifies the structure of the database and the domains; and the external schemas are how the database is viewed by "users" (applications, etc.). As for the abstraction, I understand that the conceptual layer means that the physical data storage can be altered without the end user being affected, likewise the The bit that I'm not sure about is what tools are used to access and support each layer. Would the internal schema be handled by the DBMS, the conceptual schema handled by some sort of DDL interpreter and the external schema handled by a DML interpreter (or have I misunderstood what each level does)? The thing about it is that it assigns a certain width to it that makes texts of different widths´ spacing look weird on screen. I´ve seen a default width and height of a certain amount, but what I need is to make it so that the flash is exactly the size of the text. Has anyone bumped into this issue before? Thanks!

    I have a class called "Layout" for the layout of the page, another class called "User" for the user. Every page I create, I instantiate a new Layout. When a user logs in, there is a new User instantiated. How do I get an instance of the layout class to know about the instantiated user? I could also save the entire instance of the User in a session variable. I assume that's a bad idea though. What are the best practices for this?

  • Open closed prinicple, problem

    Hi, I'm trying to apply OCP to a code snippet I have that in it's current state is really smelly, but I feel I'm not getting all the way to the end. Current code: public abstract class SomeObject {} public class SpecificObject1 : SomeObject {} public class SpecificObject2 : SomeObject {} // Smelly code public class Model { public void Store(SomeObject someObject) { if (someObject is SpecificObject1) {} else if (someObject is SpecificObject2) {} } } That is really ugly, my new approach looks like this: // No so smelly code public class Model { public void Store(SomeObject someObject) { throw new Expception("Not allowed!"); } public void Store(SpecificObject1 someObject) {} public void Store(SpecificObject2 someObject) {} } When a new SomeObject type comes along I must implement how that specific object is stored, this will break OCP cause I need to alter the Model-class. To move the store logic to SomeObject also feels wrong cause then I will violate SRP (?), becuase in this case the SomeObject is almost like a DTO, it's resposibility it not how to know to store itself. If a new implementation to SomeObject comes along who's store implementation is missing I will get a runtime error due to exception in Store method in Model class, it also feels like a code smell. This is because calling code will in the form of IEnumerable<SomeObject> sequence; I will not know the specific types of the sequence objects. I can't seem to grasp the OCP-concept. Anyone has any concrete examples or links that is a bit more than just some Car/Fruit example?

    Hi, Im loading an entity 'Member' from its id in route data. [ListItemsForMembershipType(true)] public ActionResult Edit(Member someMember) {...} The attribute on the action loads the membership type list items for a dropdown box and sticks it in viewdata. This is fine for add forms, and search forms (it gets all active items) but I need the attribute to execute BASED ON THE VALUE someMember.MembershipTypeId, because its current value must always be present when loading the item (i.e. all active items, plus the one from the loaded record). So the question is, what is the standard pattern for this? How can my attribute accept the value or should I be loading the viewdata for the drop down in a controller supertype or during model binding or something else? It is in an attribute now because the code to set the viewdata would otherwise be duplicated in each usage in each action.

    Hello I am working on a proposal where we have to implement a software which can move files between one source to destination.The overall goal of this project is to create intelligent file transfer.This software will have three components :- 1) Broker : Broker is the module that communicates with other brokers, monitors files, moves files, retrieves configurations from the Configuration Manager, supplies process information for the monitor, archives files, writes all process data to log files and escalates issues if necessary 2) Configuration Manager :Configuration Manager is a web-based application used to configure and deploy the configuration to all brokers. 3) Monitor : Monitor is a web-based application used to monitor each Broker in the environment. This project has to be built up in java and protocol for file transfer in tcp/ip. Client does not want to use FTP. File Transfer seems very easy, until there are several processes who are waiting to pick the file up automatically. Several problems arise: How can we guarantee the file is received at the destination? If a file isn’t received the first time, we should try it again (even after a restart or power breakdown) ? How does the receiver knows the file that is received is complete? How can we transfer multiple files synchronously? How can we protect the bandwidth, so file transfer isn’t blocking other processes? How does one interoperate between multiple OS platforms? What about authentication? How can we monitor het workflow? Auditing / logging Archiving Can you please provide answer to some of these?   • Why does C++ mandate that complex only be instantiated for float, double, or long double?

    According to the C++ ISO spec, §26.2/2: The effect of instantiating the template complex for any type other than float, double or long double is unspecified. Why would the standard authors explicitly add this restriction? This makes it unspecified, for example, what happens if you make complex<int> or a complex<MyCustomFixedPointType> and seems like an artificial restriction. Is there a reason for this limitation? Is there a workaround if you want to instantiate complex with your own custom type? I'm primarily asking this question because of this earlier question, in which the OP was confused as to why abs was giving bizarre outputs for complex<int>. That said, this still doesn't quite make sense given that we also might want to make complex numbers out of fixed-points types, higher-precision real numbers, etc. Thanks!
