• Welcome to the newly merged JCP EC!

  As part of the JCP.Next effort, the second JSR as part of the JCP program reforms, JSR 355, Executive Committee (EC) Merge, will take effect on Tuesday as JCP 2.9. The first in the effort was JSR 348, which took effect as JCP 2.8 in October 2011. EC members guide the evolution of the Java technologies by approving and voting on all technology proposals (Java Specification Requests, or JSRs). They are also responsible for defining the JCP's rules of governance and the legal agreement between members and the organization. They provide guidance to the Program Management Office (PMO) and they represent the interests of the JCP to the broader community. Starting on Tuesday, 13 November, JCP 2.9 is in effect, and the EC is merged from two ECs -- one representing Java SE/EE and one representing Java ME -- to one merged EC. IBM and Oracle each gave up one of their two seats (one per EC) and the terms expired for four members who did not run for re-election: AT&T, Deutsch Telekom, Siemens and Vodafone. All four remain JCP members. In addition, the seat occupied by RIM was forfeited due to lack of participation in October 2012. The JCP values the organizations and representatives for their contribution to the JCP EC, and looks forward to their continued participation in the JCP Program. The complete listing of the EC, 24 members total at the moment, is now available. We asked the two newcomers to the EC, Cinterion and CloudBees, and the re-elected London Java Community, to comment on their plans for their term in the EC. Read about their plans in the article published on JCP.org, "JCP 2.9 with a Merged EC Takes Effect 13 November". • I want to be a programmer, work in corporate environment, earn well, learn fast and eventually become a great programmer [on hold]

  I'll try to keep this simple: I'm 29, been dabbling with computers for the past 10 years, had entry level jobs in tech support for different apps, been fixing computers for a while and now want to specialize in something. I'm not 100% stranger to programming but haven't gone past if/then/else with anything. A bit of JavaScript, PHP, Python and currently checking out the "SELECT" statement in SQL :)) I'm curious about programming, I enjoy it and I'm thinking of making a living out of it. So, while I'm at it, why not earn a bit more than the average Joe? So, that's why I'm checking what the best solution, the best learning path and the most useful languages are considering: a) how easy/fast can you find a job by knowing it b) how much would I be able to earn c) how fast can I learn it By reading 10-20 articles online I've come up with an example, but I'm here for some expert advice. Example: * ratings from a) and b) point of view #1 sql ; #2 java ; #3 html (please don't start the markup language debate) ; #4 javascript From this ratings, I'd say a good way to go is learn html/css/(javascript or php) for the web part of apps, some SQL/MySQL/whateverSQL for holding data and loads of Java for the program itself. Please let me know if this is a good idea and if so, what should be the order for learning all of the above. Else, please let me know a better way and why it would be better. Many thanks for taking the time to read my question. Best wishes to you guys Edit: if I think Java + SQL + HTML&JavaScript is the way to go, does the order I'm learning them in matter? Or can I try to learn them all at once?

• Character movement on a 2D tile map

  I'm working at making a HTML5 game. Top down, closest thing I can equate it to is the gameboy zeldas, but open world and no rooms. What I have so far is a procedurally generated map in a multi dimensional array. And a starting position on the map. Along with this I have an array of movable and non movable tile ID's. I also have a class for my player and have him being rendered out in the center of the starting tile. My problem however is getting the movement sorted out for the player. I want to be able to have the character free move around the map (pixel by pixel essentially) ontop of this 2D generated world. Ideally this would allow the user to move around the walk able area of the canvas. this is simple enough for me to do, but I am having problems now moving the world. If the user is 20% from the edge of the screen i want the world to start panning in the direction the player is heading. But I'm rather lacking in ideas of how to do this. I've looked around for some tutorials, but am coming up blank on ideas of how to generate the playable area (zoomed in) and to then move this generated area under the player when they reach near the end of the screen. My current idea was to generate a certain amount of tiles full size to fill the screen and place the player i the middle. Then when the user approaches the edge of the screen start generating the tiles offset by the distance moved and the direction. I can kind of see this working but I really have no idea if this is the best or easiest to code of methods for generating the world. sorry for the lack of code but I'm still just in the theory stages of working this all out.

• Setting up Cluster Configuration using an existing web server as a Primary Node?

  Thanks in advance for any help which is issued! I am having a slight issue, and need help with the decision making process when it comes to setting up my Cluster Configuration, consisting on a line of Ubuntu Servers (12.04). We currently have a Primary node, which resides in the US within a Datacenter, but we are going to be using this for all serious bandwidth and resource intensive websites, and through a configuration of Virtualmin + Webmin, will be setup as a sort of pseudo-cluster, using Virtualmins Cluster Modules. Anyways, on to the issue: We also have a business line setup locally, with three servers. here are their specs: Intel P4 2.4 ghz, 1GB Ram, 110 gb sata, Ubuntu 12.04* AMD 1.3 ghz, 512MB Ram, 20 GB IDE P3 Xeon 800mhz (dual physical processors), 1GB Ram, 3 * 25 GB Raid Configuration (one in use for host operating system). The first machine is currently IN USE and is serving virtual hosts off a sub-domain. My question is this: How can I integrate the Secondary node (which will be the Primary node per say, in this smaller configuration...) which is currently in use, into the cluster configuration w/ the other two servers for: Sharing Resources Redundancy (HA?) NFS /w the two Raid Disks without having the FORMAT the secondary node, and start fresh moving all my services in to a DRBD network drive or something similar, and than restoring all active virtualmin's Virtual hosts. the idea is that I want minimal downtime to people currently being served from server2.mywebsite.com, and from what I understand, all services need to be on a NFS so that they can be mounted on demand and accessed from the other machine taking over (i.e. Heartbeat + DRBD Config.) but my issue is that i already have all these services installed to their default directory structure: how can i most easily setup this NFS and HA system, move all my desires services to this new drive, and do it with minimal down time, and without breaking Virtualmin and everything else on my server? even just some pointers, a thread i could read, or a step by step check list or run down of commands i could issue to get started would be great! thanks!

• Google ranking, page crawl

  please don't mind me for asking this newbie question about Google ranking. I know that in order to get ranked the page has to be crawled by Google bots, I have had a page example of which I will get a better understanding of how the system works with Google. I have made a page on my website last month, it got indexed pretty quickly, then I found that it's in Google's page 15 on my keyword as a start, next day it made it to page 13, then after a week it was jumping back and forth in page 17/18 up to 20. Now a month passed by, when and it isn't listed in any position of that 'keyword' sometimes I will find it in page 30, but later I won't find it anywhere, keep happening this way these days. Even if it isn't listed in any page for my keyword if I do a search for "site:thepageadress" it will be listed which means I'm not penalized and my page is there for google to see, but it isn't in the search result for my keyword. But when I write "site:thepage_adress" and I hit "search tools" option and click on "Past day" or "past week" it isn't listed, it is only listed when I click on "Past month" which I think means that Google indexed the page, looked at it once when I published it, and never looked at it again, is this a fair statement? So two questions that comes to mind here. 1- Should Google keep looking at a page even if I haven't changed any info for it? and is this an indication for me that my page is doing fine? or is it normal that Google see's it once and thats it? 2- Why and how to fix the fact that my page keeps jumping back and forth in the ranking result for keyword, and sometimes it isn't even listed, what does that mean? • How to fix AVI index error

  I try to open an AVI file. The first software I tried is VLC media player. It reports some error about AVI index: This AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly. Do you want to try to fix it? This might take a long time. I chose yes, and it began fixing AVI index and existed when the repair progress bar reaches 20% or so. Then the video started playing and stopped much earlier than when it is supposed to finish. Next I tried to open it in Totem Movie Player, which also stopped earlier at the same place as in VLC player. I tried to play it in GMplayer. Now the entire AVI file can be played from start to finish, but it is impossible to drag playing progress bar while it was possible in VLC player and Totem player. I heard that Avidemux can fix AVI index error, but later discovered it even failed to open the AVI file before it could try to fix the error. So I was wondering how I can fix the AVI index error, or at least drag the playing progress bar in GMplayer? Thanks and regards!

• How to fix "Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present"?

  After I updated BIOS/UEFI version to 1101 on an Asus P8Z68-V PRO motherboard Ubuntu (11.10) did not boot. After POST all I saw was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I booted an Ubuntu 11.10 live-CD and set the flag for the 20 MB partition before my boot partition to "bios_grub". Then I was able to boot and login. But now every time I boot and Ubuntu loads I get the following message: Disk drive for /boot/efi is not ready or not present. Continue waiting or press s to skip or m for manual recovery. I am able to login if I choose to ignore it by pressing s, but what does this message mean? How can I fix what the message warns about? After logging in I have noticed that /boot/efi is empty. The following forum post speaks of the same issue ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1893030. Updating to the latest BIOS/UEFI - version 3203, did not have any effect on this issue.

• How do I make money from my FOSS while staying anonymous?

  Let's say that: You have created a FOSS project that other people find useful, perhaps useful enough to donate to or pay for modifications to be done. It is a perfectly legitimate and innocuous software project. It has nothing to do with cryptography as munitions, p2p music, or anything likely to lead to a search warrant or being sued. You want your involvement to stay anonymous or pseudonymous. You would like to receive some money for your efforts, if people are willing. Is that possible, and if so, how could it be done? When I talk about anonymity, I realize that it is necessary to define the extent. I am not talking about Wikileaks style 20 layers of proxies worth of anonymity. I would expect a 3 letter agency to be able to identify the person easily. What is wanted is shielding from commercial competitors or random people, who would not be expected to be able to get the financial intermediary to divulge your details just by asking for them. Why would you want to stay anonymous? I can think of several valid reasons, maybe you operate a stealth mode startup and don't want to give your competitors clues as to the technology you are using. Maybe it is a project that has nothing to do with your daily job, is not developed there, but the company you work for has an unfair (and possibly unenforceable) policy stating that any coding you do is owned by them. Maybe you just value your privacy. For what it's worth, you intend to pay the relevant taxes in your country on any donations.

• Internet is far slower in Ubuntu than Windows 7 on dual-booted machine

  Edit: I'll leave the original post as-is, but after further investigation, it appears that the problem is something to do with my wi-fi card. Speeds are normal when I connect via cable. Edit 2: Problem was solved. It was something to do with the wireless card drivers. I normally use Windows 7 on my laptop and have internet speeds that are normally about 15-20 Mb/s. I have recently dual-booted with Ubuntu 12.10, and have noticed that internet speeds are drastically slower in Ubuntu. When tested, speeds range from 0.2-2 Mb/s, although occasionally being significantly faster than that or even stopping completely for short periods of time. I've also noticed that when first booting into Ubuntu, speeds start fairly fast, and drop to incredibly slow with a few seconds to a few minutes. There's still some possibility that the issue may be with my ISP, as things seem slower than usual even in Windows, but I suspect that it is related to Ubuntu, as things are far slower in Ubuntu than in Windows. I'm wondering, what could be the cause of this? Potentially relevant information: -I've dual booted before on this machine with earlier versions of Ubuntu (different ISP at the time) with no problem. • javaws crashes, error in ld-linux-x86-64.so.2

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit client as Dom0 and Xen. I am having problems getting java up and running. Java itself seems to work fine, however I get strange errors, for example when I start javaws. I tried different versions and always get the same errors. I tried openjdk 1.6 and 1.7 as well as sunjava6 and 7. I alway get an error in the same lib All other applications are working fine, so it seems ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 is working fine. Any hints what could be wrong? • Does Agile force developers to work more?

  Looking at common Agile practices it seems to me that they (intentionally or unintentionally?) force developer to spend more time actually working as opposed to reading blogs/articles, chatting, coffee breaks and just plain procrastinating. In particular: 1) Pair programming - the biggest work-forcer, just because it is inconvenient to do all that procrastination when there are two of you sitting together. 2) Short stories - when you have a HUGE chunk of work that must be done in e.g. a month, it is pretty common to slack off in the first three weeks and switch to OMG DEADLINE mode for the last one. And with the little chunks (that must be done in a day or less) it is exact opposite - you feel that time is tight, there is no space for maneuvering, and you will be held accountable for the task pretty soon, so you start working immediately. 3) Team communication and cohesion - when you underperform in a slow, distanced and silent environment it may feel ok, but when at the end of the day at Scrum meeting everyone boasts what they have accomplished and you have nothing to say you may actually feel ashamed. 4) Testing and feedback - again, it prevents you from keeping tasks "99% ready" (when it's actually around 20%) until the deadline suddenly happens. Do you feel that under Agile you work more than under "conventional" methodologies? Is this pressure compensated by the more comfortable environment and by the feeling of actually getting right things done quickly?

• Finding most Important Node(s) in a Directed Graph

  I have a large (˜ 20 million nodes) directed Graph with in-edges & out-edges. I want to figure out which parts of of the graph deserve the most attention. Often most of the graph is boring, or at least it is already well understood. The way I am defining "attention" is by the concept of "connectedness" i.e. How can i find the most connected node(s) in the graph? In what follows, One can assume that nodes by themselves have no score, the edges have no weight & they are either connected or not. This website suggest some pretty complicated procedures like n-dimensional space, Eigen Vectors, graph centrality concepts, pageRank etc. Is this problem that complex? Can I not do a simple Breadth-First Traversal of the entire graph where at each node I figure out a way to find the number of in-edges. The node with most in-edges is the most important node in the graph. Am I missing something here?

• Why is my model's scale changing after rotating it?

  I have just started a simple flight simulator and have implemented Roll and pitch. In the beginning, testing went very well; however, after about 15-20 seconds of constantly moving the thumbsticks in a random or circular motion, my model's scale begins to grow. At first I thought the model was moving closer to the camera, but i set break points when it was happening and can confirm the translation of my orientation matrix remains 0,0,0. Is this a result of Gimbal Lock? • Remove languages in translations?

  Hi, I use spell-checker for 4 languages, en, de, fr, and lb. If I enable Spellchecking and writing aids for en, de or fr in System -> Administration -> Language Support there will be multiple versions of each language available, e.g. en , en_CA, en_GB, ... Is there a possibility to select only one of those language versions while enabling the language, or removing the others afterwards. It would be enough to remove them from the selection menu. I would like to use the version which is equal to the country the language originally comes from: e.g. de_DE, fr_FR, en_GB. For lb there is currently only lb_LU so there is no problem (yet). Instead of 4 languages I currently have around 20, which is kind of annoying when switching the language ( which I do quite often). There might be a similar problem for the menu translations, where if I understand correctly you can choose the order in which translations are applied if they exist. Any suggestions?

• Experiences with Ubuntu One?

  I'm currently testing several backup/sync services: Dropbox, SpiderOak and Ubuntu One. Of them, Dropbox is the winner hands down; SpiderOak is nice too, but a bit more intrusive and unpredictable (sometimes is slow in syncing some files, or doesn't sync them at all). Ubuntu One has promise, but I've used it much less than the other two. I'm thinking about buying a "20 pack" and using Ubuntu One as my only synchronization software. It's the cheapest of them all (3$/month vs 10$ in Dropbox and SpiderOak), and 20GB of space is enough for me. My intention is to sync most of my $HOME folder. All the computers I'll connect will have Ubuntu installed, so not being multiplatform doesn't really matter to me. If its performance is as good as Dropbox's, I'm sold. But I'd like to gauge some experiences here first. Is anyone using it seriously? I.e., to sync a lot of files that change often (like the aforementioned $HOME folder, program sources, or something alike). What have been your experiences? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I am trying to design a database schema for a web app which has 3 subdomains: a) internal employees b) clients c) contractors. The users will be able to communicate with each other to some degree, and there may be some resources that overlap between them. Any thoughts about this schema?
