• Uninstall last n of ports/packages

  While compiling some port, I realized that it depends on 1000+ of other ports and will install forever until I die or my disk is full (my hdd is really small). I interrupted make install clean. How do I uninstall and clean those dependencies which have already been built and installed? (there are at least 100+ of them) pkg_cutleaves wont work in this case, since the main port wasn't registered yet. Please help. FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE amd64 EDIT: Another way to ask this question: How can I see all dependencies for a non-registered port, and all subdependencies for those dependencies, independent with previously installed ports or their [sub]dependencies?

• Identify ENCRYPTED compressed files at the command line

  I have directories with hundreds of RAR files. Currently I use Powershell 2.0 with a script that utilizes WinRAR's RAR utility to decompress the files. The issue is that a small number of the files end up being encrypted, which pauses the script and requires interaction. Is there any way to do one of the following: Identify the encrypted files before trying to decompress Entirely ignore the encrypted files Automate an incorrect (or correct) password that will attempt to open the file, but just skip it if incorrect. NOTE: Some of the compressed files encrypt just file contents, whereas others encrypt file name and file contents. • How can I setup a subnetwork using DDWRT and a 2Wire?

  Ok, I'm having a bit of trouble getting this setup. I'm not really sure what direction I need to be looking in. I am on ATT UVerse and I have to use their horrible 2Wire Modem/Router. But with this router, I have very limited control over my network and my wifi range is too small for my house. But, I have a hardwire ran to my TV which I have hooked into a switch and split the line to my PS3. The problem I'm having, is I don't know how to get the Buffalo DD-WRT setup as a subnetwork so that the PS3 can find my Media Server. Here is a diagram of what I'm trying to accomplish: Blue is ethernet.

• Sun Grid Engine: Automatically Terminating Idle Interactive Jobs

  We're considering using Sun Grid Engine on a small compute cluster. Right now, the current set up is pretty crude and just involves having people ssh to an open machine to run their jobs. We'd like to allow interactive jobs, since that should ease the transition from manually starting jobs to starting them using qsub. But, there is some concern that, if we do, people might accidentally leave their interactive sessions idle and block other jobs from being run on the machines. The issue isn't just theoretical, since we previously tried using OpenPBS and there was a problem with people opening up an interactive job in a screen session and essentially camping on a machine. Is there anyway to configure SGE to automatically kill idle interactive jobs? It looks like this was requested as an enhancement (Issue #:2447) way back in 2007. But, it doesn't seem like the request ever got implemented.

• Windows 7 side Taskbar: how to have multiple icon columns?

  NOTE: I know this can be done with the taskbar on the bottom. I seek the solution for a taskbar on the side. I attached a picture of what I mean. In the screenshots, you can see that my taskbar program icons are arranged in a single column. I want to be able to have multiple columns. This would mean arranging the icons into squares and have them be placed side by side, as well as above and below one another. This can be accomplished with taskbar being on the bottom of the screen, however, I require this arrangement when I have my taskbar on the side of my screen. Currently if I expand the taskbar horizontally, it only stretches out the icons horizontally rather than turn them into small squares to make room for side by side and placement of icons. Additional icons that I add to my current taskbar are only accessible by using the horizontal scroll bar that appears at the bottom of the taskbar when there is no more space to accommodate any more icons.

• MacBook Pro 15in High-res hard to read. What setting should I change?

  I just bought a new MacBook Pro with the high-res screen (1680x1050), but I noticed that all text is so small that to read it my face has to be like 18 inches away. When I adjusted the resolution to be the next sizes down (1440 x 852, and 1440 x 852 stretched), as well as all the other smaller sizes it made everything look blurry (similarly to when you use Command + Scroll to zoom in, how the text is really soft on the edges, and difficult to read). Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing, or another resolution settings area that I can use. I feel like this 2800 dollar notebook may be only good for movie watching otherwise. • SLES 11 - ocfs2 - Locking does not appear to work

  Hi I have two SLES 11 servers that are SAN attached to a Clarion CX-340. The SAN partition has been formatted with ocfs2 and I have both machines setup in a cluster and the cluster is running (all appears to be normal). I have a small java application as a locking test and when I run the application on both machines at the same time, I should get the lock on one server and the other should refuse the lock since the first already holds a lock on that file but in this case both servers get a lock on the same file. Basically my cluster.conf looks like this: node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.121 number = 1 name = osrsles10node1 cluster = osrsles10 node: ip_port = 7777 ip_address = 192.168.10.122 number = 2 name = osrsles10node2 cluster = osrsles10 cluster: node_count = 2 name = osrsles10 Please ask for any other info - I really need these locks to be exclusive to each server.   I'm in need of some fast (15+ GB/s write) and somewhat large (50 TB+) storage subsystem with a standard storage interface. I'd prefer something other than Fibre Channel, which admittedly appears to be the most standard interface. RAID 5 is sufficient. What are the cheapest / smallest products from vendors to look at for building this subsystem? I've looked at DDN and TMS so far.   Im looking for a reason why a person would use a Spanned volume rather than a Striped volume? If my understanding is correct Striped: Faster read/write speed than spanned, but I "assume" more wear+tear Spanned: No speed benefit like striped, but data is written sequentially and fills up Drive1 before filling up Drive2, so it saves on wear+tear Beyond that Im not sure if there is any other deciding factor on which to use. Definition found below: A striped volume uses the free space on more than one physical hard disk to create a bigger volume. Unlike a spanned volume, a striped volume writes across all volumes in the stripe in small blocks, distributing the load across the disks in the volume. The portions of disk used to create the volume need to be the same size; the size of the smallest free space included in the striped volume will determine.

• Windows Resource Monitoring Programs

  I work at a small tech start up managing websites with our own in house server side code. (In production, we use Windows Server 2008 boxes, running Java 6. In our dev boxes, we use Windows 7 running Java 7.) Recently, we had an issue where some of our boxes in production failed, and we didn't have means of trouble shooting, since we keep little to no monitoring logs about a given box's CPU/memory/RAM usage, etc. So, I'm wondering if there is some commercial/freeware that's the standard for performance monitoring/logging. Essentially, I'm just looking for an analytics system that is similar to the Windows Task Manager or the Resource Monitor, that serializes all of its data periodically. Ideally, I'd like to find a program that's also extensible, in case I'd like to add addition monitors in the future.

  I recently installed to the latest version of DivX and suddenly found my C drive filling up with the cache files. I tracked it down to: C:\Files\My Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files My old laptop (running WinXP) only has a small hard drive and any DivX cache files fills it up so I want it to use my D drive where I have a little more room. The trouble is I can't see anywhere in the DivX preferences where I can change the cache location. Can anyone tell me how I can change the location of the DivX cache files?

• Difference between BES SBE and Express?

  Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the BES epxress and small business edition is? From what I have read they are both identical in capabilities and also both have a 15 user limit. But the BES express edition is free and comes with 1 user license and SBE costs about £800 but comes with 5 user licenses. Buying a 5 user CAL pack costs about £350 (from what I have seen). So if there is no difference why would anyone buy the SBE when they could get the Express edition free and just add 5 more licenses for about £350? Is there any fundamental difference between express and SBE?

• Move some iTunes library items to different drive?

  My internal hard drive is somewhat small, and I only regularly listen to a fraction of my iTunes library anyway, so I'd like to keep large portions on it on an external drive for archival purposes. Since dealing with multiple iTunes libraries is somewhat painful, the solution I'm looking for is to move individual items of the library to a different location, without compromising the "Keep organized" and "Copy files" settings. I found an AppleScript that I assume is supposed to do this, Move Files To Folder…, but it instead copies them, and doesn't update the library accordingly. I can do this manually by moving the file, then accessing it in iTunes — it'll prompt me for the new location. I just don't intend to do this one by one for thousands of files.

• Where are my Tomcat Logs?

  Hi All, I installed Tomcat6 on a Ubuntu 9.04 server using apt-get install tomcat6. I uploaded a WAR using the manager interface and tried to start the application but get a pretty generic error on the Web interface saying it couldn't be started. I am trying to find the logs to determine why my war won't start (I suspect low memory as i'm on a small VPS) but I don't know where they are. /var/lib/tomcat6/logs is empty. My Tomcat splash page reliably informs me of the following; Tomcat is installed with CATALINA_HOME in /usr/share/tomcat6 CATALINA_BASE in /var/lib/tomcat6, following the rules from /usr/share/doc/tomcat6-common/RUNNING.txt.gz. • How to set up a software VPN when moving a server to the cloud

  I work in a small company with one office in Dallas and another in Los Angeles. We run a Fedora server at our Dallas location and use a Linksys RV042 at each location to create a VPN connection between the sites. Every time the power or internet goes out in Dallas, our server is inaccessible so the entire company goes down. Because of this, we would like to use a shared server in the cloud (something like Linode) to avoid this problem. As a relative novice to VPN configurations, I would like to know if it is possible to set up a software VPN on the cloud server and connect our local networks in Dallas and LA to that VPN. I've read about openvpn and ssh vpns, but I don't know it is the best option. Could anyone with some experience point me in the right direction on the right combination of software VPN and hardware for this? We're open to new hardware to make this happen. Thanks!

  I have an Nginx and Passenger setup that is proving problematic. At relatively low loads the server seems to get backed up and start churning results like this into the error.log: connect() to unix:/passenger_helper_server failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) while connecting to upstream My passenger setup is: passenger_min_instances 2; passenger_pool_idle_time 1200; passenger_max_pool_size 20; I have done some digging, and it looks like the CPU gets pegged. Memory usage seems fine passenger_memory_stats shows at most about 700MB being used, but CPU approaches 100%. is this enough to cause this type of error? Should i bring the pool size down? Are there other configuration settings I should be looking at? Any help appreciated Other pertinent information: Amazon EC2 Small Instance Ubuntu 10.10 Nginx (latest stable) Passenger (latest stable) Rails 3.0.4

• internet access options in remote area? (read: no comcast,qwest, etc)

  Currently I am living in a fairly "remote" area, in the countryside, and cable internet access through the typical companies like comcast and qwest is just not available here. I've been trying to research other options for fast internet access. There are some small cable companies but they currently do not offer broadband access here. I thought about maybe buying a 3g phone with a data plan and doing some sort of tethering, or perhaps getting an android phone and using it as a wireless AP. This would of course depend on 3g being available here. The only other thing I can think of is some sort of satellite internet service, or doing something crazy like adapting wifi over am radio. Anyone have any ideas, at all, short of moving somewhere else?

• AutoCAD 11 and network file shares

  Small network of perhaps half a dozen engineers, currently working on local copies of AutoCAD project files, which are then copied back up to file server (2008 Standard, 1-2 year old Dell server hardware, RAID 5 SAS disks (10k? not positive)) at end of day. To me, this sounds horribly inefficient and error-prone, however, I've been told that "AutoCAD and network files = bad idea" and this is gospel. The network is currently 10/100 (perhaps this is the reason for the "gospel") but all the workstations are within 2 years old and have GbE NICs so an upgrade of the core switch is long overdue. However, I know certain applications don't like network access, at all, and any sign of latency or disruption brings the whole thing crashing down. Anyone care to chime in?

• Create a Windows Image for Deployment

  In my company we have 8 laptops that we use to deploy on the field. These machines get assigned to a user for a certain time and run Windows Vista. All the machines are the same model. After the machine is returned, it is company policy to completely format the machine and go back to a predetermined configuration. Right now, what we do is we use the recovery utility in the laptop (we are a small shop so we use the OEM Windows license that the laptops come with) and manually uninstall and change the configuration in order to bring it to our baseline config. I know that there are ways to create an image that gets copied to the hard drive with a specific configuration and with specific software installed (thats what OEMs do right?). I'm looking for a tool or a tutorial or something that explains as simply as possible how to create such an image. Thanks a lot

Is there a better way to do this?
