  I am new to iphone application development. I am building an iphone app where the user needs to be able to add speech bubbles (think comics) over existing images. I have some questions on how to implement this, Have an empty speech bubble image and overlay it over existing image - Do I use a separate UIImage for the speech bubble? Or should I draw the speech bubble myself? Allow the user to move the speech bubble using touch- Any pointers or examples would be great! Also let him resize the speech depending on the amount of text - Any pointers or examples would be great! • Best way to Duplicate a Laptop's Hard Drive One-to-One

  I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet computer, with a plain SATA drive inside. I have windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting on the computer. I want to back up both of these OS's, and their special partitions (Windows 7 has one, and of course the Linux Swap). I want a one-to-one backup, all of my mission critical data is already backed up, but I would like to get a snapshot, and store it on a larger file server at home for quick recovery. What is the best approach to do this?

• Citrix ICA Client on Mac shift key doesn't work as expected.

  When I'm connected to a Windows XP computer from my Mac OS X 10.6 using the Citrix ICA Client, it seems that the shift key only works for the first letter typed after pressing shift. In order to type multiple uppercase letters, like ICA, I must either press caps lock, or press and release shift before each character. I've tried switching between standard and enhanced keyboard, as well as the 'Send Special Keys Unchanged' option, but none of these seem to affect the issue. The problem doesn't occur when I switch from the Citrix window to a regular Mac window.

• Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

  I have some text laid out using Core Text in my iPhone app. I'm using NSAttributedString to set certain styles within the text for given ranges. I can't seem to find an attribute for setting a background / highlight colour, though it would seem it is possible. • Is it possible to format ps RSS (memory) output to be more human friendly?

  Executing ps ux returns a nice list of process information, easy to grep through or watch. However, there doesn't seem to be much flexibility in the memory usage output; the RSS (resident set size) is printed in kB, which for large processes is hard to read (especially at a glance), and %MEM gives 100 × RSS / system_memory. The du utility has a lovely -h flag which prints space in a more user friendly fashion. I have not been able to find anything equivalent for ps. Is there a special formatting trick that can accomplish this?

• Unable to access intel fake RAID 1 array in Fedora 14 after reboot

  Hello everyone, 1st I am relatively new to linux (but not to *nix). I have 4 disks assembled in the following intel ahci bios fake raid arrays: 2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126 2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125 I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. • Connecting a Mac to the office network

  Hi All, I am busy preparing to start working with a Mac at work - in addition to my old PC. Just wondered, is it difficult to setup the Mac to run on the office network - i.e. does it need any special settings or servers or anything like that? and also printers...can I use the network printer as normal. I am just pottrying to think ahead of any ential issues. Also share drives...will I be able to access share drives and my backups to these shares drives - all a bit daunting! • How do internal smtp servers send mail to internal mail servers on the network?

  We have upgraded our internal corporate email server and the IP address has changed internal to our network. A second email server is used for sending bulk jobs for a mailing list service that we offer. Since the switch of the internal corporate server IP we have been seeing problems when the bulk email server is trying to send email to our own domain. The log shows that it is still trying to hit the old corporate server instead of the new one. I have looked through all settings for the bulk email software and see nothing set there to send to internal mail servers, and I do not recall doing anything special to get this working when setup a couple years ago. Is there a setting in Win2003 or on the network that enables the mapping of MX record external IPs to internal IPs so mail gets routed correctly?

• Using Custom HttpHandler to redirect users in Sharepoint

  Hi all: I need to redirect a user to a different page if they visit a certain set of pages in a web. There is one condition: I'm not allowed to touch the IIS. I have googled around and found a thing called the custom HttpHandler for WSS 3.0. It sounded like something that I can use to capture the URL the user enters (the most malicious way to get to a page that should really be redirected) and redirect them to another page/web. But having not have the chance to use it yet, I was wondering am I on the right track by using a Custom HttpHandler to redirect a user to a different page in Sharepoint using C#? Many thanks.

  The command line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in bash will ring the bell. With the line: /bin/echo -e "\007" in my crontab I expected the bell to ring every minute, but it's silent. I know crontab is working because the line: /bin/touch $HOME/jkjkjk updates the file jkjkjk every minute as it should. I found a posting some years ago suggesting that standard output should be directed to /dev/tty1 in crontab. But the line: /bin/echo "\007" /dev/tty1 Still fails. What to try next?

• Odd behavior on Shift-{Esc,Fx}

  Sometimes, when changing between the modes in Vim, I forget to take my finger off the Shift key. This innocent mistake is probably part of the luggage carried over from other terminals, but I have never seen my input treated this way. After changing from command mode to input mode, if I hit the Esc key while the Shift key is down, Vim will display <9b (Control Sequence Introducer) instead of switching to the command mode. • Redirecting subsite on same domain to other IIS using HTTPS

  I've seen many similar questions (and answers) on this subject, but none seem to be on exactly the same situation I am facing. Which is weird since I don't think it is that special, so forgive me if I haven't searched enough. Anyway. I have two websites which are on two IIS7, one facing WAN and one in the LAN. The WAN facing is already HTTPS-only. I want to add the second website, but on the same HTTPS domain and SSL certificate, so that it becomes a subsite like: https://www.domain.com/subsite How can I do a redirect or rewrite on the first IIS to the second one to make this work? I don't think there is a standard IIS feature that can do this. ISA server is not an option currently. But maybe another extension to IIS exists? Done this numerous times on Apache, and am about to ditch IIS for Apache.

  We're looking into implementing Variable Envelope Return Path (VERP) for improved bounce processing for our application. Our current mail infrastructure is MS Exchange 2007 but are in the process of upgrading to 2010. We're also implementing Postini for spam filtering. Exchange doesn't support sub-addressing (see also this question on disposable addresses) -- and VERP is somewhat of a specialized application of sub-addressing. Are there any options for implementing VERP in Exchange without putting another non-Exchange SMTP relay in front of Exchange to pre-process incoming messages? Specifically could a transport rule be created that could match against the target (non-existing) recipient, store that recipient address in a special header added to the message, and redirect the message to a pre-created mailbox? Note: we have developer resources available if custom code could be used somehow.

• Why does Komodo edit not open files on doubleclick due to some path encoding error?

  When I double click a file in finder to open in Komodo edit, it displays an error message saying it can't find the file and the path is displayed, but with wrong encoding, such that special characters such as "ó" and "ð" are displayed as some weird boxes. Screenshot: http://i51.tinypic.com/2qkleg4.jpg I'm running OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and Komodo Edit version 5: "Komodo Edit, version 5.2.4, build 4343, platform macosx-x86. Built on Tue Dec 8 18:18:35 2009." When I drag the file into Komodo edit it opens just fine displaying the path correctly with "ó"s and all :P This doesn't happen if I right click the file in finder and select to open it with TextEdit or Word or (God forbid) MacVim - only when I select to open it in Komodo edit. This is annoying as all hell.

• ATI video cards - unable to use entire monitor (1080p)

  Hi all, I have a Dell s2409w, 24" 1080p monitor. With nVidia, I would plug-in the monitor and voila, it automatically knew it was 1080p (1920x1080). I have both a Windows laptop and Ubuntu laptop. Neither is capable of using the fullscreen even though the monitor reports the input is 1080p. I am connecting the monitors via HDMI, is there a 'special' setting I am missing to make this work? Otherwise, I like the performance of my ATI video cards, the drivers seem to be stable and reliable. Thanks, Walter

• Trying to compile MobileSubstrate addon - Undefined symbol

  Hi! I went through this tutorial to create a MobileSubstrate addon. I could compile the example hook without errors. But as soon as I add #import <SpringBoard/SBAwayController.h> in ExampleHookProtocol.h and SBAwayController *awayController = [SBAwayController sharedAwayController]; in ExampleHookLibrary.mm (as the first line of the __$ExampleHook_AppIcon_Launch function) I get the following error message when attempting to make (triggered by the latter change): Undefined symbols: "_OBJC_CLASS_$_SBAwayController", referenced from: __objc_classrefs__DATA@0 in ExampleHookLibrary.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [ExampleHook.dylib] Error 1. The header file for SBAwayController is located in /var/toolchain/sys30/usr/include/SpringBoard, just like SBApplicationIcon.h, which is used by the ExampleHook. I'm compiling on my iPod touch 2G. • Workaround iPhone's browser not honoring the <label> element

  Hi, Just ran into this recently and I thought it'd be helpful to share. The HTML <label> element is supported in a weird way by iPhone's (v3) browser. Try this: <input type="checkbox" id="chkTest" /><label for="chkTest">Click me!</label> Tapping the "Click me!" label has no effect, the checkbox is not checked. Lack of support in a touch device for <label> elements puzzled me and I tried to overcome this issue by using javascript. The surprise came when a I noticed a void javascript like the one below also did the trick: <input type="checkbox" id="chkTest" /><label for="chkTest" onclick="javascript:void(0);">Click me!</label> HTH Further info: Also works with an empty handler: onclick="" Disabling JavaScript inactivates again the label, even if using the empty handler.

• How to configure cookieless virtual host in Apache2?

  We run over a hundred web applications (growing daily) on a LAMP stack using Apache2 on Ubuntu 10.04. We've would like all requests to static content to be cookieless. We host applications on many different domains, a majority of which as SaSS applications. Many of the domains host instances of the applications on sub domains, ie. myapp.example.com, myapp2.example.com myapp.otherexample.com etc.. At the moment all static content is server relative to the (sub)domain requesting it. As far as I understand the process, I would need to setup a new domain, eg. staticexample.com. In this case is special configuration in the virtual host for this domain required to ensure no cookies are served? Also, would it be possible to instead use static.example.com? In this case what configurations would I need in my virtual host for this subdomain to ensure no cookies are served?

• (iPhone) Instruments can't "Attach to Process"

  Actually, I'm using a second generation Ipod Touch. What I'm trying to do is to debug my app on XCode and look for any memory leaks on Instruments at the same time. Is it even possible? Because the "Attach to Process" submenu lists when my app is running (or debugging in this case) but all the items inside this menu are disabled. All I can do is start the app from Instruments but later I come across some bug and I want to see the variables and properties affected. I'm also new to Instruments. Please, could someone give me any advice? Help would be greatly appreciated!
