• Back Orders for ERP: data model references ?

  I have built an ERP using Sql Server as a back-end. These are the different types of Client documents (there are also Supplier Docs): Order -- impact: BO Delivery Note (also used for returns, with negative quantity) --impact: BO, Stock Invoice --impact: accounting only Credit Note --impact: accounting, BO I use a complex system of self joins (at detail level) to find out the quantities in each OrderDetail that still have a backorder (BO). It'd like to simplify this using a [group] field that could be used through all detail line related to an original order. There are many difficult things to trace: a Return of a product may be due to a defect and thus increase the BO, or it can be just a return, joined with a Credit Note, and then has no impact on BO. My question is: do you know of any real good reference (book, web) for this matter ?

  This seems like a pretty straightforward thing to do, but I can't find anything off the open-source shelf. Is there a solution already out there that does the following: can be configured with an arbitrary XSL stylesheet generates a web form based on an arbitrary XML document and the XSL creates edit functionality in appropriate places in the rendered form updates the local representation of the XML document provides capabilities to view, save the new XML document Ideally, one that plugs into a Java web application. Even better if it can generate the XSL based on schema documents - but that might not be feasible, not really thought it through. • Is it possible to load a new Applescript scripting addition whilst my script is running?

  According to various documents and discussions this used to be possible: you needed a block something like this in your script: try tell me to «event ascrgdut» end try tell me to doTheFunkyNewThing The event corresponds to hidden event with the undocumented C constant kUpdateAEUT (see here for the declaration of the constant) which should force the scripting additions to be reloaded. I've written a scripting addition and played around with this method of getting it to load but I have had no luck at all. I can only make it load by starting my script after the extension has been installed. Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work? Has this functionality been disabled in more recent OS X releases? I'm using OS X 10.6.2 FWIW.

• How many layers are between my program and the hardware?

  I somehow have the feeling that modern systems, including runtime libraries, this exception handler and that built-in debugger build up more and more layers between my (C++) programs and the CPU/rest of the hardware. I'm thinking of something like this: 1 + 2 OS top layer Runtime library/helper/error handler a hell lot of DLL modules OS kernel layer Do you really want to run 1 + 2?-Windows popup (don't take this serious) OS kernel layer Hardware abstraction Hardware Go through at least 100 miles of circuits Eventually arrive at the CPU ADD 1, 2 Go all the way back to my program Nearly all technical things are simply wrong and in some random order, but you get my point right? How much longer/shorter is this chain when I run a C++ program that calculates 1 + 2 at runtime on Windows? How about when I do this in an interpreter? (Python|Ruby|PHP) Is this chain really as dramatic in reality? Does Windows really try "not to stand in the way"? e.g.: Direct connection my binary < hardware?

• Funny characters in my db

  My web app is breaking when I try edit a certain content type and I'm pretty sure it is because of some weird characters in my database. So when I do: SELECT body FROM message WHERE id = 666 it returns: <p>⢠<span></span></p><p><br /></p><p><em><strong>NOTE:</strong> Please remember to use your to participate in the discussion.</em></p> However when I try to count how many documents have those characters postgres complains: foo_450_prod=# SELECT COUNT(*) FROM message WHERE body LIKE'%â¢%'; ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0xe2a225 HINT: This error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encodi Does anybody know what the issue is and how I can query for those funny characters? • How to best deal with photos passed to IFilter?

  I'm implementing an IFilter for indexing image formats. One problem is photos - many users have tons of photos, photos are huge and loading and searching for text on them is time consuming. Yes, sometimes people use cameras instead of scanners for digitizing documents, but the potential problems IMO far outweight the possibility of encountering a document digitized with a photo camera. So my implementation will not extract text from photos at all. What should the IFilter do once it detects that a given file is a photo image - indicate an error or return empty text?

• Ngram IDF smoothing

  I am trying to use IDF scores to find interesting phrases in my pretty huge corpus of documents. I basically need something like Amazon's Statistically Improbable Phrases, i.e. phrases that distinguish a document from all the others The problem that I am running into is that some (3,4)-grams in my data which have super-high idf actually consist of component unigrams and bigrams which have really low idf.. For example, "you've never tried" has a very high idf, while each of the component unigrams have very low idf.. I need to come up with a function that can take in document frequencies of an n-gram and all its component (n-k)-grams and return a more meaningful measure of how much this phrase will distinguish the parent document from the rest. If I were dealing with probabilities, I would try interpolation or backoff models.. I am not sure what assumptions/intuitions those models leverage to perform well, and so how well they would do for IDF scores. Anybody has any better ideas?

  I am trying to create an application to print documents over the web. I have created my document, and made a web page with a meta refresh tag, along the lines of this: <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="3;http://example.com/download.epl2" /> I specify that the document has a content-type of application/x-epl2, and I have associated .epl2 files on my computer with a program that silently sends them to the printer. I have put the website into my trusted sites zone. Currently Internet Explorer pops up the "Open, Save, Cancel" dialog box with no option to automatically open the file. Is there a setting in IE6/7/8 that I can use to have IE just open the file without prompting?

• Unable to install Maven: "JAVA_HOME is set to an invalid directory"

  I followed the Maven tutorial to the letter but I still can't get Maven installed. When I run the following in command prompt: E:\Documents and Settings\zach>mvn --version I get: 'mvn' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I navigated to the maven install folder and ran mvn --version and got: E:\java resources\apache-maven-2.2.0\bin>mvn --version ERROR: JAVA_HOME is set to an invalid directory. JAVA_HOME = "E:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin" Please set the JAVA_HOME variable in your environment to match the location of your Java installation but when I run java -version I get: java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode) So I do have Java installed. Anyone know what the problem is?

  Hi I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question for StackOverflow. I have a friend show wants a simple "Brochure Ware" web site. I could make it for him but it would be better if he could manage it himself. Are there any services out there that allow a non-technical person to create and maintain a very simple site? I'm thinking just a few pages - contact, about, home with some photos and general info. He also wants to sell some stuff but I'm going to suggest he does this using EBay but the web site would be a handy reference for potential customers who want to know more about him and his services. • Displaying Powerpoint slides on a web page automatically

  Anyone know of any Flash components that would do the job of displaying an external PPT/PPTX file in a Flash movie on a web page? Or a way of automatically parsing uploaded Powerpoint docs from a PHP-based CMS and displaying them on a web page. Our client needs to be able to upload a Powerpoint documents on their site without any intervention (if necessary). I know about Slideshare and the like, but the content needs to live on the client's web server due to security restrictions. Also, Adobe Presenter seems to require Adobe software/plugins on the clients machine which wouldn't be ideal. Thanks in advance

• iPhone SDK - How is data shared in a universal app

  Stack overflow I want to make a universal version of my app available, but I am wondering how is data managed between the iPad and the iPhone versions? -Are they completely independent? or if I have a plist in the iPad app, does it also appear in the iPhone app. If so, is there any syncing etc etc. I have a few months experience with single iPad or iPhone apps, but never a universal.   I have a folder full of XHTML files, and a console program to process them. The problem is, it doesn't work when I'm offline, because The remote name could not be resolved: 'www.w3.org' A number of sites, including this one, say to set the XmlResolver to null. That is not not working. I have tried setting the XmlResolver to null every way that I can think of: in the XmlDocument, in XmlTextReader, and in the XmlReaderSettings. I believe that it's just creating a default instance. I have also tried implementing my own XmlResolver, but I don't know what to return for external items. public class NonXmlResolver : XmlUrlResolver { public override object GetEntity( Uri absoluteUri, string role, Type ofObjectToReturn ) { if ( absoluteUri.Scheme == "http" ) throw new Exception("What you talking 'bout, Willis?"); else return base.GetEntity( absoluteUri, role, ofObjectToReturn ); } } The documents do not use any special entities, only pure XML. • I Clean Solution'd my Winform App and now it's broken...

  I have a Winform App that uses a 3rd Party Library of Controls, DevExpress. I also created a bunch of Controls myself, extending those controls. Everything has been working fine when all of a sudden I opened VS today and on the Design Page all my extended controls were missing. I then tried rebuilding to no avail. Then I tried Cleaning and Rebuilding and made it even worse. Now I have tons(520) of erros stating things like -- Error 179 The name 'datBirthDate' does not exist in the current context D:\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\MatrixReloaded\MatrixReloaded\Controls\Member\ucGeneral.cs 339 17 MatrixReloaded also if I try to open a form or user control in Design Mode I first get this -- could not find type, "MyType" please make sure that the assembly that contains this type is referenced and then, if I click Ignore and Continue I get this for all Forms and Contros when I try and look at them in Design Mode -- Exception of type System.OutOfMemoryException was thrown Help!?!? When I googled I came across mostly references to VS 2003...I am on 2008 sp1.

• How do I easily change hardcoded links to a file in Excel?

  I have a project where I maintain a list of all my students and their information in an Excel file labeled "BigList.xlsx". Then, I have about 40-50 other separate ancillary excel files that link to BigList by using vLookup. For example, in cell A1 of an ancillary file you might see a formula that looks like this: =Vlookup(B3, 'c:\documents and settings\user\desktop[BigList.xlsx]Sheet1'!$a$1:$b$10000,2,false). The vlookup link above references BigList.xlsx. However, I just realized that I need to change that file name to something else, like MasterDatabase.xlsm (notice the different extension). Is there an easy way to do this without having to manually go through all 40-50 files and doing a find & replace? I think the basic idea is to change a hardcoded link into a dynamic one where I can change the filename of BigList.xlsx anytime, and not have to go back through all 40-50 files to update their links.

  I was going through Nicholas Zakas presentation on JavaScript here : http://www.slideshare.net/nzakas/writing-efficient-javascript (slide number: 89/139) He recommends using cssText property whenever you are setting a bunch of styles through JavaScript. The best solution is obviously adding those styles to a class and then using JS to add the classname to an element.However, in many situations, We resort to just setting the properties directly within JS when the number of properties are low. It seems from his presentation that using cssText property would be more efficient in such scenarios.I tried to look up more on the property but couldn't find much information. Has anyone used the 'cssText' property ? It would be great to have some more technical info on how the property helps.

  Hi all, I'm using the PhysX SDK and I'm trying to load an .obj file with the WavefrontObj object which is defined by the files "wavefront.h/.cpp", localized in the samples directory.
