• Why isn't Hadoop implemented using MPI?

  Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that Hadoop does not use MPI for communication between different nodes. What are the technical reasons for this? I could hazard a few guesses, but I do not know enough of how MPI is implemented "under the hood" to know whether or not I'm right. Come to think of it, I'm not entirely familiar with Hadoop's internals either. I understand the framework at a conceptual level (map/combine/shuffle/reduce and how that works at a high level) but I don't know the nitty gritty implementation details. I've always assumed Hadoop was transmitting serialized data structures (perhaps GPBs) over a TCP connection, eg during the shuffle phase. Let me know if that's not true.

• How to move user content in Wix Installer

  To support Window Vista in my game, I have changed were the save files are placed (From under Program Files to My Documents) for both XP and Vista installations. Now I would like to be able to move the current XP users save games from the old location to the new location. I think I can correctly trigger this via the upgrade checking code like so: <Upgrade Id="PLACE-GUID-HERE"> <UpgradeVersion OnlyDetect="yes" Minimum="$(var.ProductVersion)" IncludeMinimum="no" Property="NEWERVERSIONDETECTED" /> <UpgradeVersion OnlyDetect="no" Minimum="1.1.0" IncludeMinimum="yes" Maximum="$(var.ProductVersion)" IncludeMaximum="no" Property="OLDERVERSIONBEINGUPGRADED" /> <UpgradeVersion OnlyDetect="no" Maximum="1.1.0" IncludeMaximum="no" Property="MOVESAVEFILESUPGRADED" /> </Upgrade> where 1.0.x was the old way and 1.1.x will be the new way, thus I could do something in a custom action based on MOVESAVEFILESUPGRADED, but the heart of the problem, I cant see how to move non-installed files from one location to another.

• New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

  I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks. • Why compressed xps are corrupt?

  compressed xps documents do not pass isxps.exe test and do not display in xpsviewer. i'm using Windows 7 and vs2010. IsXps.exe says "Unable to open Zip archive Error code: 0x8000FFFF", same with default W7 XpsViewer. what i'm doing wrong? (i've also installed latest 7zip program, but i do not think that it may corrupt the default windows zip capability......or not?)

• Silent Printing of PDF From Within Java

  We are looking into silent printing of PDF documents from within Java. The printing will be invoked from the desktop and not through a browser so we cannot use JavaScript. PDF Renderer is an operational solution but their rendering quality is not acceptable. iText does not seem to be pluggable with the Java print service. There are some commercial Java libraries, jPDFPrint by Qoppa, JPedal, and ICEpdf which we have not tried out yet. Does anybody have any experience with PDF silent printing from Java?

• How can I make a read only version of a class?

  I have a class with various public properties which I allow users to edit through a property grid. For persistence this class is also serialized/deserialized to/from an XML file through DataContractSerializer. Sometimes I want to user to be able to save (serialize) changes they've made to an instance of the class. Yet at other times I don't want to allow the user to save their changes, and should instead see all the properties in the property grid as read only. I don't want to allow users to make changes that they'll never be able to save later. Similar to how MS Word will allow users to open documents that are currently opened by someone else but only as read only. My class has a boolean property that determines if the class should be read-only, but is it possible to use this property to somehow dynamically add a read-only attributes to the class properties at run-time? If not what is an alternative solution? Should I wrap my class in a read-only wrapper class?

• Right recursive grammar or left recursive?

  I have little to no knowledge of what I'm about to ask, so I would like a suggestion based on the level of skills required to implemented a parser for the given grammar ( since I'm a beginner in this kind of formal approach to parsers and languages ). Just by going back of a couple of years, this situation reminds me a little of Pascal grammar vs C/C++ grammar, this left vs right stuff. But I'm not going to do any of that, my purpose is to implement a simple parser for a markup language for documents like Markdown. So considering that I'm starting with a markup language in mind, I want to keep things simple, which is the easiest one to handle between this 2 options and why . Another kind of grammar could be an easier option for me ? If yes which one do you suggest ?

• Solr dataimport skips entities in my data-config.xml

  My data-config.xml defines 3 different entities under the document tag (lets call them foo, bar and baz). When I issue a basic full import localhost:8983/solr/dataimport?command=full-import, only 2 of the 3 entities get indexed (foo and bar are in my index but baz never makes it). However, if I then issue a command to just import baz via localhost:8983/solr/dataimport?command=full-import&entity=baz&clean=false it adds baz documents just fine and the index then has all 3 types. Does anyone have any thoughts on why one entity gets skipped in the general data import but then still works okay if I specifically call it out? Is there an error/warning log I can check? Nothing bad shows up in /solr/logs/ but those just appear to be request logs.

  First I need to state that I am not the developer so I will state the issue in business terms but please respond with a technical solution as I will be passing on your posts to the developer. We are building a web based application in SilverLight and WPF that consists of communication between a customer service rep and a customer. The application will inlcude a webcam that will provide the customer with the ability to see the customer service rep and the rep will also be able to see an image of themselves but will not be able to see the customer. Similar functionality to a live web chat with video component. There could potentially be bandwidth issues and we do not want the customer to have to download anything. Any recommendations on how to do this?

  I love to use Google Documents as MS Word and MS Excel replacements for online collaboration. However, now I need to discuss architecture layout for my software. Nothing too fancy, perhaps a little (pseudo-)UML, but mostly basic shapes (rectangles, ellipses etc.) with labels, connected by thin lines or arrows. In olden Windows times I'd go for Visio, and be happy. But now I want to use online tool. Preferably free. No need for code reverse engineering etc., just plain assisted vector drawing. Any advice?   I am fairly new to java and I am trying to find if the file specified in the LINUX path exists. private void validateFilePath(String filePath) { File dir = new File(filePath); if(dir.exists()){ System.out.println("File exists in the path " + dir); setTARGET_IMG_DIR("filePath"); return; }else{ System.out.println("File does not exists in the path: " + dir); return; } } The dir.exists works fine if I give a absolute path from my root like this /Users/yv/Documents/Eclipse-workspace/InputParser/bin/test.txt but if I give a relative path like test.txt or /InputParser/bin/test.txt it says files does not exists. I am planing on creating a jar of this projects and hence this should work with both relative path(files in the same directory) and absolute path from the root. How can I handle this ? Is it possible to search for the absolute path of that file from the root and append it to the file name ?

  Ok, I am sure this is simple but I am not able to figure it out and people on this site seem to be brains... I will admit this is for homework but it has nothing to do with how to code. Has to do with a silly error that I am unable to resolve. I try to debug and when I debug i get the following error ERROR "Visual Studio cannot start debugging because debut target 'C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\programs6\HuricaneSeasonStatistics\bin\Debug\HuricaneStatistics.exe" is missing. Please build the project and retry, or set the OutputPath and AssemblyName properties appropriate to point a the correct location for the target assembly." I am fairly sure the error is in the OutputPath and or AssemblyName. but I am not sure where to change.

• Set a script to automatically detect character encoding in a plain-text-file in Python?

  I've set up a script that basically does a large-scale find-and-replace on a plain text document. At the moment it works fine with ASCII, UTF-8, and UTF-16 (and possibly others, but I've only tested these three) encoded documents so long as the encoding is specified inside the script (the example code below specifies UTF-16).   Before I continue I would just like to say I know that "Premature optimization is the root of all evil." However this program is only a hobby project and I enjoy trying to find ways to optimize it. That being said, I was reading an article on improving xml performance and it recommended sharing "the XmlNameTable class that is used to store element and attribute names across multiple XML documents of the same type to improve performance." I wasn't able to find any information about doing this in my googling, so it is likely that this is either not possible, a no-no, or a stupid question, but what's the harm in asking?

  This will be a bit subjective, I'm afraid, but I'd value the advice of the Collective. Our web application lists documents that users can download; standard file navigator stuff: Type Name Created Size ----------------------------------- PDF Doc 1 01/04/2010 15 KB PDF Doc 2 01/04/2010 15 MB Currently we list the file size as text, but I'd like to improve this by having some way of showing visually whether the file is tiny, normal or huge. The reason for this is so that users can scan the list quickly and spot files that are likely to take a long time downloading. My options currently are: Bigger font sizes for bigger files (drawback: the layout can become untidy) Icons (like a wi-fi signal strength indicator; drawback: harder to scan) Keep all sizes in KB so the number of zeroes indicates size (drawback: users have to calculate the "friendly" size in their heads) I know this is quite a minor thing, but I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter!

• Getting sourcecontrol on stored procedures

  First off the technical stuff: We're using VS 2008 pro and running a MS SQL 2008 server. For sourcecontrol we use Subversion. We'd really like to keep our stored procedures in subversion, so we can tell what was changed, when and so forth. However in order for this to work, it has to be seamless, otherwise the developers are just going to forget getting the procedures included in their commits. So are there any good solutions for this ? I'm certain we can't be the only company with this issue :-)

  I've been working on an open source project on sourceforge a few months ago. One thing I noticed is that a well written summary could make a huge difference for the product. I literally saw traffic going to almost nothing when I made a poor change to project summary. One more thing I noticed is that not only summary has to be appealing, but also take into consideration some technical aspects, such as (for example): contain all the necessary keywords for it to be searchable and produce the best match for a hypothetical search potential user will make in order to find it. Here comes the question now: can you share your tips and tricks for writing an efficient product summary, and otherwise promoting your project, whether it's on sourceforge or somewhere else?

• WCF DataContract class with methods

  This is more of a philosophical/best-practice sort of question rather than a technical problem. Are there any strong arguments against writing a DataContract class with methods that are to be used server-side only? Or what about additional properties that are not decorated with the DataMember attribute? For example: [DataContract] public class LogEntry { [DataMember] public string Message { get; set; } [DataMember] public string Severity { get; set; } public string SomeOtherProperty { get; set; } ... public void WriteToDatabase() { ... } } Not doing it seems like an awful lot of extra work that I would prefer to avoid, although using extension methods could make it easier. But, as a good developer, I am wondering if it is bad practice to do so.
