• Package information was last updated 59 days ago even though Ubuntu is up to date

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and in the update manager I have a message that says package information last updated 59 days ago press the check button to check for software updates I do that, but i'm up to date. I checked other threads with this same problem, and saw i should do sudo apt-get update in a terminal to see which repository is not up to date and when I did, I got this message: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/Release Then I checked for this repository in software sources but couldn't find this specific one. In my /etc/apt/sources.list.d I have only one line: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu oneiric partner #Added by software-center So now I don't know what to do more. Should I upgrade to 12.04 and will it solve my problem? I wouldn't want to upgrade if there is a problem in the last version but I don't know much about Ubuntu so, can anyone help me please? • Unable to fix broken packages with sudo apt-get install -f

  Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt. • Set up linux box for hosting a-z

  I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP/MySQL: To upgrade PHP and MySQL to the latest versions, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! • Deployment project not updating .exe

  I have a Winforms project with a single .exe file as the primary output. I'm using a deployment project to distribute it, but the .exe file is not being updated when the new version is installed, meaning I have to ask the users to manually uninstall and then install the new version. Here's what I'm doing: I increment the assembly version on the output project (which is the primary output of the deployment project) I increment the deployment project version (and update the product code when prompted) The deployment project is set to remove previous versions the 'Permanent' property on the .exe is set to False I'm sure I've done this before successfully, but I can't seem to do it now. What am I doing wrong? Edit: I got it to work by changing the file version in the project properties, as in this answer

• A Visual Studio Release Grows in Brooklyn

  Yesterday, Microsoft held its flagship launch event for Office 2010 in Manhattan.  Today, the Redmond software company is holding a local launch event for Visual Studio (VS) 2010, in Brooklyn.  How come information workers get the 212 treatment and developers are relegated to 718? Well, here’s the thing: the Brooklyn Marriott is actually a great place for an event, but you need some intimate knowledge of New York City to know that.  NBC’s Studio 8H, where the Office launch was held yesterday (and from where SNL is broadcast) is a pretty small venue, but you’d need some inside knowledge to recognize that.  Likewise, while Office 2010 is a product whose value is apparent.  Appreciating VS 2010’s value takes a bit more savvy.  Setting aside its year-based designation, this release of VS, counting the old Visual Basic releases, is the 10th version of the product.  How can a developer audience get excited about an integrated development environment when it reaches double-digit version numbers?  Well, it can be tough.  Luckily, Microsoft sent Jay Schmelzer, a Group Program Manager from the Visual Studio team in Redmond, to come tell the Brooklyn audience why they should be excited. Turns out there’s a lot of reasons.  Support fro SharePoint development is a big one.  In previous versions of VS, that support has been anemic, at best.  Shortage of SharePoint developers is a huge issue in the industry, and this should help.  There’s also built in support for Windows Azure (Microsoft’s cloud platform) and, through a download, support for the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 platform.  ASP.NET MVC, a “close-to-the-metal” Web development option that does away with the Web Forms abstraction layer, has a first-class presence in VS.  So too does jQuery, the Open Source environment that makes JavaScript development a breeze.  The jQuery support is so good that Microsoft now contributes to that Open Source project and offers IntelliSense support for it in the code editor. Speaking of the VS code editor, it now supports multi-monitor setups, zoom-in, and block selection.  If you’re not a developer, this may sound confusing and minute.  I’ll just say that for people who are developers these are little things that really contribute to productivity, and that translates into lower development costs. The really cool demo, though, was around Visual Studio 2010’s new debugging features.  This stuff is hard to showcase, but I believe it’s truly breakthrough technology: imagine being able to step backwards in time to see what might have caused a bug.  Cool?  Now imagine being able to do that, even if you weren’t the tester and weren’t present while the testing was being done.  Then imagine being able to see a video screen capture of what the tester was doing with your app when the bug occurred.  VS 2010 allows all that.  This could be the demise of the IWOMM (“it works on my machine”) syndrome. After the keynote, I asked Schmelzer if any of Microsoft’s competitors have debugging tools that come close to VS 2010’s.  His answer was an earnest “we don’t think so.”  If that’s true, that’s a big deal, and a huge advantage for developer teams who adopt it.  It will make software development much cheaper and more efficient.  Kind of like holding a launch event at the Brooklyn Marriott instead of 30 Rock in Manhattan! VS 2010 (version 10) and Office 2010 (version 14) aren’t the only new product versions Microsoft is releasing right now.  There’s also SQL Server 2008 R2 (version 10.5), Exchange 2010 (version 8, I believe), SharePoint 2010 (version 4) and, of course, Windows 7.  With so many new versions at such levels of maturity, I think it’s fair to say Microsoft has reached middle-age.  How does a company stave off a potential mid-life crisis, especially when with young Turks like Google coming along and competing so fiercely?  Hard to say.  But if focusing on core value, including value that’s hard to play into a sexy demo, is part oft the answer, then Microsoft’s doing OK.  And if some new tricks, like Windows Phone 7, can gain some traction, that might round things out nicely. Are the legacy products old tricks, or are they revised classics?  I honestly don’t know, because it’s the market’s prerogative to pass that judgement.  I can say this though: based on today’s show, I think Microsoft’s been doing its homework.

• Why does Google mark one e-mail as spam while does not the other?

  I've a Postfix installation which works fine, I don't get any trouble with mails sent through a mail client (in my case, Thunderbird or RoundCube) when the To: address is a GMail account. However, I recently needed to use the PHPMailer tool to send some e-mails to some GMail accounts, so I configured an account to be used via SASL authentication + TLS. I don't mean mass mailing, just 2-3 mails. If I send the e-mail from the Thunderbird or RoundCube clients, the mail is not marked as spam. However, if I use PHPMailer, it always gets catalogued as spam. So I compared both headers and I just can't find the reason why the second is marked as spam while the first one is just ok. • Free Document/Content Management System Using SharePoint 2010

  That’s right, it’s true. You can use the free version of SharePoint 2010 to meet your document and content management needs and even run your public facing website or an internal knowledge bank.  SharePoint Foundation 2010 is free. It may not have all the features that you get in the enterprise license but it still has enough to cater to your needs to build a document management system and replace age old file shares or folders. I’ve built a dozen content management sites for internal and public use exploiting SharePoint. There are hundreds of web content management systems out there (see CMS Matrix).  On one hand we have commercial platforms like SharePoint, SiteCore, and Ektron etc. which are the most frequently used and on the other hand there are free options like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and Plone etc. which are pretty common popular as well. But I would be very surprised if anyone was able to find a single CMS platform that is all things to all people. Infact not a lot of people consider SharePoint’s free version under the free CMS side but its high time organizations benefit from this. Through this blog post I wanted to present SharePoint Foundation as an option for running a FREE CMS platform. Even if you knew that there is a free version of SharePoint, what most people don’t realize is that SharePoint Foundation is a great option for running web sites of all kinds – not just team sites. It is a great option for many reasons, but in reality it is supported by Microsoft, and above all it is FREE (yay!), and it is extremely easy to get started.  From a functionality perspective – it’s hard to beat SharePoint. Even the free version, SharePoint Foundation, offers simple data connectivity (through BCS), cross browser support, accessibility, support for Office Web Apps, blogs, wikis, templates, document support, health analyzer, support for presence, and MUCH more.I often get asked: “Can I use SharePoint 2010 as a document management system?” The answer really depends on ·          What are your specific requirements? ·          What systems you currently have in place for managing documents. ·          And of course how much money you have J Benefits? Not many large organizations have benefited from SharePoint yet. For some it has been an IT project to see what they can achieve with it, for others it has been used as a collaborative platform or in many cases an extended intranet. SharePoint 2010 has changed the game slightly as the improvements that Microsoft have made have been noted by organizations, and we are seeing a lot of companies starting to build specific business applications using SharePoint as the basis, and nearly every business process will require documents at some stage. If you require a document management system and have SharePoint in place then it can be a relatively straight forward decision to use SharePoint, as long as you have reviewed the considerations just discussed. The collaborative nature of SharePoint 2010 is also a massive advantage, as specific departmental or project sites can be created quickly and easily that allow workers to interact in a variety of different ways using one source of information.  This also benefits an organization with regards to how they manage the knowledge that they have, as if all of their information is in one source then it is naturally easier to search and manage. Is SharePoint right for your organization? As just discussed, this can only be determined after defining your requirements and also planning a longer term strategy for how you will manage your documents and information. A key factor to look at is how the users would interact with the system and how much value would it get for your organization. The amount of data and documents that organizations are creating is increasing rapidly each year. Therefore the ability to archive this information, whilst keeping the ability to know what you have and where it is, is vital to any organizations management of their information life cycle. SharePoint is best used for the initial life of business documents where they need to be referenced and accessed after time. It is often beneficial to archive these to overcome for storage and performance issues. FREE CMS – SharePoint, Really? In order to show some of the completely of what comes with this free version of SharePoint 2010, I thought it would make sense to use Wikipedia (since every one trusts it as a credible source). Wikipedia shows that a web content management system typically has the following components: Document Management:   -       CMS software may provide a means of managing the life cycle of a document from initial creation time, through revisions, publication, archive, and document destruction. SharePoint is king when it comes to document management.  Version history, exclusive check-out, security, publication, workflow, and so much more.  Content Virtualization:   -       CMS software may provide a means of allowing each user to work within a virtual copy of the entire Web site, document set, and/or code base. This enables changes to multiple interdependent resources to be viewed and/or executed in-context prior to submission. Through the use of versioning, each content manager can preview, publish, and roll-back content of pages, wiki entries, blog posts, documents, or any other type of content stored in SharePoint.  The idea of each user having an entire copy of the website virtualized is a bit odd to me – not sure why anyone would need that for anything but the simplest of websites. Automated Templates:   -       Create standard output templates that can be automatically applied to new and existing content, allowing the appearance of all content to be changed from one central place. Through the use of Master Pages and Themes, SharePoint provides the ability to change the entire look and feel of site.  Of course, the older brother version of SharePoint – SharePoint Server 2010 – also introduces the concept of Page Layouts which allows page template level customization and even switching the layout of an individual page using different page templates.  I think many organizations really think they want this but rarely end up using this bit of functionality.  Easy Edits:   -       Once content is separated from the visual presentation of a site, it usually becomes much easier and quicker to edit and manipulate. Most WCMS software includes WYSIWYG editing tools allowing non-technical individuals to create and edit content. This is probably easier described with a screen cap of a vanilla SharePoint Foundation page in edit mode.  Notice the page editing toolbar, the multiple layout options…  It’s actually easier to use than Microsoft Word. Workflow management: -       Workflow is the process of creating cycles of sequential and parallel tasks that must be accomplished in the CMS. For example, a content creator can submit a story, but it is not published until the copy editor cleans it up and the editor-in-chief approves it. Workflow, it’s in there. In fact, the same workflow engine is running under SharePoint Foundation that is running under the other versions of SharePoint.  The primary difference is that with SharePoint Foundation – you need to configure the workflows yourself.   Web Standards: -       Active WCMS software usually receives regular updates that include new feature sets and keep the system up to current web standards. SharePoint is in the fourth major iteration under Microsoft with the 2010 release.  In addition to the innovation that Microsoft continuously adds, you have the entire global ecosystem available. Scalable Expansion:   -       Available in most modern WCMSs is the ability to expand a single implementation (one installation on one server) across multiple domains. SharePoint Foundation can run multiple sites using multiple URLs on a single server install.  Even more powerful, SharePoint Foundation is scalable and can be part of a multi-server farm to ensure that it will handle any amount of traffic that can be thrown at it. Delegation & Security:  -       Some CMS software allows for various user groups to have limited privileges over specific content on the website, spreading out the responsibility of content management. SharePoint Foundation provides very granular security capabilities. The thing I would like to do is: I want to have a version number of the application ex. 0.0.120 I want to see this version number only in the About box or similar This version number should change everityme I hit debug or release. ex. my version was 0.0.120, after I hit debug in the FlexBuilder, the versionNumber should change to 0.0.121, but If I press Release Build, then the version should change to 0.1.0 The first number changes only when I manually change it Don't know how is this possible but if you have a tip, let me know. • Using installshield to replace a same-versioned DLL in the GAC

  We recently put out an update of one of our apps with a "test" DLL from a third party. The third party does not update their assembly versions on the dll's, only the file versions, so multiple apps can reference different "versions" of it. However, the GAC still allows us to keep the newest version, because it also checks the file version which is always updated. What happened is we were not ready to release this DLL, but it got out there on some customer machines. I would like to put our current live version back out there, but it has an older file version (and the same assembly version) as the test DLL. We have multiple apps referencing this DLL, so I can't simply delete it and drop in the new one. Is there a way to replace the DLL in the GAC? I'm using installshield 2009. Perhaps some sort of custom action upon install?

Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL? • mounting external hard drive EXT4: "the unlocked device does not have a reckognizable filesystem on it"?

  I'm having problems mounting ext4 partitions(inside a LUKS partition) in external drives. The drives are fine, there is no problem whatsoever with the drives and no filesystem corruption. This happened since a recent automatic system upgrade, and a manual upgrade to kernel 3.12.0. It goes like this: I plug in the external drive Passphrase is asked for luks device luks partition correctly unlocked/opened Instead of proceding with mounting the now exposed ext4 partition there's a pop-up saying: "the unlocked device does not have a recognizable filesystem on it". Same happens in this case: $ gvfs-mount -d /dev/sdc2 Enter a passphrase to unlock the volume The passphrase is needed to access encrypted data on WDC WD250... (250 GB Hard Disk). Password: Error mounting /dev/sdc2: The unlocked device does not have a recognizable file system on it Doing a manual sudo mount /dev/dm-1 /mnt/testfolder works with no errors and there is no problem with the filesystem (fscked). Also there doesn’t seem to be anything useful written to dmesg when this happens. What gives?

  I'm writing a GLSL shader editor and I want to parse GLSL compiler messages to make hyperlinks to invalid lines in a shader code. I know that these messages are vendor specific but currently I have access only to AMD's video cards. I want to handle at least NVidia's and Intel's hardware, apart from AMD's. • Upgraded to 11.10 lost personal folders, Ubuntu one shows no files

  Upgraded to 11.04, from 10.10 system would only come up in terminal mode, but it told me that an additional upgrade was available and did I want to do that. Foolishly thinking that might fix the problem, I said yes. This time it did not make it all the way through the upgrade, when I came back to the computer over an hour later, the screen was filled with an error message "could not open display", had to reboot. Went to recovery mode on reboot to install nvidia module, when I rebooted system came up fine, but without carrying over my personal folders, I have the home folder, but no personal named folder in it. Came to Ubuntu One, but gives error message; File Sync error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked Is the a way around this in order to restore my files? I know my files existed on Ubuntu one as of a few months ago.

• Upgrading visual studio with Crystal Reports

  In the process up updating an app from Visual Studio 2003 to VS 2008.  It happens to have a couple dozen crystal reports that it executes regarly. Upgraded visual studio to 2008, and when attempting to generate the reports an exception was thrown. A significant portion of the rendering engine for Crystal Reports is not coming from Crystal, it's coming from Visual Studio and those methods and properties have changed over the years.  I needed to upgrade the report generating methods from the VS 2003 way of doing things to the VS 2008 way for the report to generate successfully. Not only that, but this means that while we were previously rendering with Crystal 9 in VS 2003, Visual Studio 2008 will render per Crystal 10, which treats things like column widths in Excel different (by default, at least) so now we have to go through all of our reports and compare outputs for Crystal just to upgrade the Visual Studio environment that I foolishly believed would  not be affected.

  As Java 1.6u31 is not certified for use with EBS or Demantra, you may notice issues in relation to the Java plug-in.  Demantra Development is currently working to certify Java 1.6u31.  They are recommending that you upgrade to that version. EBS customers, should not be installing 1.6u31 as it is not certified.  If you do upgrade your browser, you will either need to downgrade to a lower release of Firefox or find a way of allowing Firefox to use the older version of the Java Plug-in.

  I followed the Maven tutorial to the letter but I still can't get Maven installed. When I run the following in command prompt: E:\Documents and Settings\zach>mvn --version I get: 'mvn' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I navigated to the maven install folder and ran mvn --version and got: E:\java resources\apache-maven-2.2.0\bin>mvn --version ERROR: JAVA_HOME is set to an invalid directory. JAVA_HOME = "E:\Sun\SDK\jdk\bin" Please set the JAVA_HOME variable in your environment to match the location of your Java installation but when I run java -version I get: java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode) So I do have Java installed. Anyone know what the problem is?

• Is it normal to these Xcode prompts/errors when you deploy to IOS Simulator from Unity?

  Just trying out the IOS build process.... Is it normal to see: Q1 - "upgrade to latest project format - project currently in Xcode 3.1 format, this will upgrade to 3.2" - just click OK and let Xcode do it's stuff? Q2 - same as Q1 but this time for the message "Remove obsolete build settings - will remove the build setting PREBINDING" Q3 - also when deploying to "Lastest IOS Simulator" you get the Simulator target produced, but also a non-simulator target which has lots of errors. So I assume you just ignore this target and not use it in Xcode correct? (i.e. just use the simulator target that is produced) Q4 - get a lot of warning after the simulator target is built? program works ok however....
