  • How to fix a bootable USB Kubuntu installation when the drive has maxed out?

    I used Universal-USB-Installer-v1.5.1 from PenDriveLinux.com with Kubuntu 10.04 so I could set up my 4GB flash drive as a totally independent installation. Unfortunately, there was an OS upgrade available which Kubuntu downloaded and attempted to install. This, along with some other software, apparently maxed out my drive before I realized it. Now when I try to boot from the drive, everything boots as normal to the OS boot screen where I select "Boot from this Kubuntu USB Installation." The startup process initiates, then stalls about halfway through and hangs indefinitely. I'm guessing the drive is trying to use space it doesn't have and completely stops working. I realize that once the OS upgrade is in place, the old files could be deleted for a potential 700MB space gain. However, I just have no way to get into the OS and complete the upgrade. My main OS is Windows 7. Is there a way I can fix this issue from within Windows without formatting the entire drive and reinstalling Kubuntu from scratch?

  • Upgrading PHP, MySQL old-passwords issue

    I've inherited a Windows 2k3 server running an XAMPP-installation from the stone age. I needed to upgrade PHP to facilitate an upgrade to MediaWiki to facilitate a new MediaWiki extension (to facilitate some documentation to facilitate doing my job to facilitate getting paid to facilit... you get the idea). However... installing a new version of PHP resulted in PHP's MySQL libraries refusing to communicate using MySQL's 'old style' 152-bit passwords. Not a problem in theory. The MySQL installation is post-4.1, so it should have the functionality to upgrade the user's passwords from 152-bit to 328-bit (what a weird hashing algorithm...). I ran the following: SET PASSWORD = PASSWORD('foo'); on MySQL but querying: SELECT user, password FROM mysql.user; returned just the same password I started out with - 152-bit. Now... I suspect you're thinking 'AHA! old-passwords is on!'. Unfortunately it's not - I've disabled it in the configuration (explicitly set it to 0), made doubly sure I have an absolute reference to that configuration file and ensured the service isn't using the --old-passwords flag. The service was reset after each and every operation. So I went onto another system and generated the 328-bit hash on there, copying the hash over to the first MySQL instance. Unfortunately, that didn't work either (I did remember to FLUSH PRIVILEGES). The application error is: "'mysqlnd cannot connect to MySQL 4.1+ using the old insecure authentication. Please use an administration tool [...snip...] Is there anything else I can try to get PHP to recognise MySQL as not using the 'old insecure authentication'? MySQL seems to be stuck in 'old-passwords' mode and I can't get it out of it.

  • I want to dual boot Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro that doesn't already have Windows. Do I have to buy Windows twice?

    My girlfriend just bought a Macbook Pro, and she wants to to dual boot OSX with Windows. Specifically, she would like to use Windows 8. What I already know is the following: Windows 8 discs are only meant for upgrading from previous versions of Windows Windows 8 discs can be used to do a clean install, but (officially) only if there's already a legit version of Windows on the hard disk I've read somewhere of a disc being used to install Windows 8 on a fresh, out-of-the-box hard drive, and it all went well until the activation phase, where it said that the disc could only be used for upgrades The logical conclusion would be that in my circumstance, the only option is to buy a full (non-upgrade) retail copy of Windows 7, install that using boot camp, then load up Windows 7, insert the Windows 8 upgrade disc and do the 7-8 upgrade. However, I've read quite a few blog posts of people installing Windows 8 using bootcamp (e.g., Ars Technica, which leads me to believe that it might be possible to do so without installing Win7 first. The problem is that I'm not sure if these people were using preview versions, which obviously won't have the license issues down the track. Can anyone provide a definitive answer as to how to put Win8 on a Mac?

  • Group Policy - Published software not upgrading

    I'm testing this with mercurial MSIs, but it's the same for other packages. I've created a new group policy and added an old version of mercurial to User software installation as a Published package. On a Windows 7 client I install the package through Programs and Features. The installation works fine. Now, I would like to publish an updated version of mercurial. I create a new Published package. Under 'Upgrades' I configure it to replace (upgrade also doesn't work) the old version and mark this upgrade as 'Required'. The old package is not removed. The Windows 7 client is then restarted. When I log back in, I see a status message saying something like 'Removing managed software Mercurial ...'. There is no message about installation of the upgrade. If I look in Programs and Features, I can see the new version of mercurial listed. However, the actual mercurial directory under Program Files is missing. It's as though the installation recorded information about the MSI, but didn't actually install anything after removing the old version. As I mentioned, this isn't specific to mercurial. I've tried using other apps and have yet to find one that can be upgraded via a Published package. Using Assigned packages in Computer Configuration works without problems, but I would like this software to be optional rather than required. Ideas?

  • Core Data migration problem: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model

    The Background A Cocoa Non Document Core Data project with two Managed Object Models. Model 1 stays the same. Model 2 has changed, so I want to migrate the store. I've created a new version by Design Data Model Add Model Version in Xcode. The difference between versions is a single relationship that's been changed from to a one to many. I've made my changes to the model, then saved. I've made a new Mapping Model that has the old model as a source and new model as a destination. I've ensured all Mapping Models and Data Models and are being compiled and all are copied to the Resource folder of my app bundle. I've switched on migrations by passing in a dictionary with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption key as [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] when adding the Persistent Store. Rather than merging all models in the bundle, I've specified the two models I want to use (model 1 and the new version of model 2) and merged them using modelByMergingModels: The Problem No matter what I do to migrate, I get the error message: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model." What I've Tried I clean after every single build. I've tried various combinations of having only the model I'm migrating to in Resources, being compiled, or both. Since the error message implies it can't find the source model for my migration, I've tried having every version of the model in both the Resources folder and being compiled. I've made sure I'm not making a really basic error by switching back to the original version of my data model. The app runs fine. I've deleted the Mapping Model and the new version of the model, cleaned, then recreated both. I've tried making a different change in the new model - deleting an entity instead. I'm at my wits end. I can't help but think I've made a huge mistake somewhere that I'm not seeing. Any ideas?

  • Problems with builds on TFS 2010 and resolving dependencies

    Hi I have a project that works great on my machine (and production servers). It's a VS2010 project running C#3.5. When letting my build server build the solution it can't resolve a couple of my third party dll's.     My macbook pro is able to clone/push/pull from the company git server. My cent 6.3 vm gets a 401 error git clone https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup "error: The requested URL returned error: 401 Authorization Required while accessing https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup/info/refs As a work around, I've tried creating a folder, with an empty repository, then setting the remote to the company server. I get the same error when trying a git pull The remotes are identical between the machines MacBook Pro (working) git --version git version 1.7.10.2 (Apple Git-33) git remote -v origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (fetch) origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (push) Cent 6.3 (not working) yum install -y git git --version git version 1.7.1 git remote -v origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (fetch) origin https://git.acme.com/git/torque-setup (push) The git server only allows https. Not git or ssh connections. Why is the macbook pro able to do a git pull, while the cent os machine can't? Solution Update 2013-5-15 As jku mentioned, the culprit is the old version of git installed on the cent box. Unfortunately, 1.7.1 is what you get when you run yum install git The work around is to manually install a newer version of git, or simply add the username to the repo git clone https://[email protected]/git/torque-setup

  • Sharing an assembly between ASP.NET and Silverlight

    Hi, I've created an assembly to share it between my main app and the silverlight app. At the beginning it looked like it was going to work but now I get this exception: "System.IO.FileNotFoundException was caught, Message="Could not load file or assembly 'System.Xml.Linq". I'm using .NET 3.5 Sp1 and Silverlight 3. That shared assembly uses System.Xml.Linq, and it cannot find it... I think because it is trying to find that version in the .NET framework instead looking in the silverlight one. How can I fix this? Cheers.     I am trying to support UTF-8 characters in my ANT script. As long as the character string are made up of 2-byte UTF-8 characters, such as: Lògìñ Ùsèr ÌÐ Then things work fine. When I use Unicode Han Character: ? Which, according to this site: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/6211/index.htm Has a UTF-8 encoding of 0xE6 0x88 0x91 I can see in UltraEdit, my input properties file has the values "E6 88 91" all in a row, so I'm fairly confident that my input is correct. And When I open the same file in Notepad++ I can see all the characters correctly.     I have a project that I am working on that requires the use of the Mysql Connector for NHibernate, (Mysql.Data.dll). I also want to reference another project (Migrator.NET) in the same project. The problem is even though Migrator.NET is built with the reference to MySql.Data with specific version = false, it still tries to reference the older version of MySql.Data that the library was built with instead of just using the version that is there.. and I get the exception listed in the title: ---- System.IO.FileLoadException : Could not load file or assembly 'MySql.Data, Version=1.0.10.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The version I am referencing in the main assembly is 6.1.3.0. How do I get the two assemblies to cooperate?     I have problem with performance of Java UDR functions on Informix on Windows. On this server I already have some functions in C and SPL. I chose one function to write it in those 3 languages and I measured performance of this function on test table. Function calculates some kind of checksum so it not use any db libraries etc. only string and math operations. I observed performance on 30k records with SQL like: select function(txt) from _tmp_perf_test and I changed function to 'function_c, function_spl or function_java. My performance tests showed that C function is the fastest, SPL function is about 5 times slower, where Java is 100 (one hundred!) times slower than C. I checked it few times and 1:100 ratio didn't improve. I changed Java function to simply return length of the string but even this do not help so it looks, that there is general problem with Java function invocation, because there was no difference in time between Java function that calculate checksum and Java function that returns length of the string. I increased JVM_MAX_HEAP_SIZE to 128 and it not helped too. I use IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.TC6DE. The same test on Linux server: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.50.FC6 show more "normal" results, i.e. Java is slower from C and SPL but only 2 to 5 times. What can I do to improve Java performance on Informix server on Windows?   • Confusion about maven-war-plugin and jetty-maven-plugin

    I am trying to get the run-exploded goal of the jetty-maven-plugin to work correctly. I find the documentation somewhat lacking on what I need to do to set this up. I believe I have a standard WAR-file setup. (The reason I wrote "believe" is that I find the maven-war-plugin documentation lacking as well.) When I build my webapp using maven package, I get the following in my target folder: classes maven-archiver surefire-reports test-classes tmp mywebapp-version mywebapp-version.war where mywebapp-version is the exploded war and mywebapp-version.war is the packaged one. So far so good (I think?). Now, running mvn jetty:run-exploded, it seems the default deploy folder is target/tmp/webapp/mywebapp-version.war/. This folder exists, but contains no files except for a webapp-cache.xml. This seems wrong to me. I also tried to actively set the webApp configuration element to ${project.build.directory}/mywebapp-version/, but run-exploded seems to ignore it (despite the documentation stating otherwise). What am I doing wrong? It looks as if I am missing something simple since no one else appears to be running into the same problem.

    Here is the setup: SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Server with a Merge Publication. SQL Server 2005 Express with pull subscription. There is no web or ftp setup. This is direct merge replication. Using the RMO objects from C#, I get a "class cannot be found." COM Error when accessing the MergePullSubscription.SynchronizationAgent property. I've tried with both the 2008 RMO dll's (version 10 dll's) and the 2005 RMO dll's (version 9 dll's).   • Nexus One & Windows XP USB Driver

    I've been unable to get my Nexus One working as a development phone on Windows XP. I've got the driver (revision 3 for N1 support), I've got it installed according to the official installation guide, and the phone appears in the Device Manager just as the guide says it should. However, adb still can't find the phone. 'adb devices', for example, returns no active devices. Am I forgetting some basic step? One thing I've noticed is that the driver is labeled in Windows as version 2 released November, 2009 (I need version 3 from January 2010 for N1 support). However, I've never had version 2 installed. I've used the SDK to download version 3 several times - even deleted it and redownloaded it. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the version 3 driver multiple times. It still says version 2. Is this the problem, or this something completely unrelated? Note: The phone is working as a dev phone on Ubuntu, so I know the phone/cable/etc. are good. It's either my fault or the driver's.

  • MonoDevelop: Addin generation issues

    I am having problems creating the root.mrep file for a updated MonoDevelop Addin. The Addin was originally built for MonoDevelop 2.2. I am able to build the updated project but when I use mdrun.exe setup rep-build to generate the .mrep files(main and root) it only generates the main.mrep file and not the root.mrep file. Is there a new way of building the addin that I am missing? I used both setup pack and then setup rep-build. Whenever I run my server, though, I keep getting: ERROR Server Exception: sessionId should not be null; has this session been started yet?   • Remove In-App Purchase from free app and increase the price

    The current version of an application in the App Store is free and has very limited functionality. An In-App Purchase unlocks everything else. I have decided to remove the In-App Purchase and just make the application cost the same price as the In-App Purchase did. But if I make the update now, then those users who have the free version but who have not yet paid for the In-App Purchase will get a free update into the full version. I have removed all traces of my singleton class, PurchaseManager, from the application, so that at this point, when I build/run it, all of the features are unlocked. At this point, how can I make sure that the free-version users don't just ride an update into the full version? Maybe there's a way to test whether the app is obtained through an update or through a purchase? That way, if it's through an update, I will see if it's the free version w/o the IAP and then force the user to purchase the IAP to continue playing. Any ideas?

  • Wrappers/law of demeter seems to be an anti-pattern...

    I've been reading up on this "Law of Demeter" thing, and it (and pure "wrapper" classes in general) seem to generally be anti patterns. Consider an implementation class: class Foo { void doSomething() { /* whatever */ } } Now consider two different implementations of another class: class Bar1 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static Foo getFoo() { return _foo; } } class Bar2 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static void doSomething() { _foo.doSomething(); } } And the ways to call said methods: callingMethod() { Bar1.getFoo().doSomething(); // Version 1 Bar2.doSomething(); // Version 2 } At first blush, version 1 seems a bit simpler, and follows the "rule of Demeter", hide Foo's implementation, etc, etc. But this ties any changes in Foo to Bar. For example, if a parameter is added to doSomething, then we have: class Foo { void doSomething(int x) { /* whatever */ } } class Bar1 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static Foo getFoo() { return _foo; } } class Bar2 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static void doSomething(int x) { _foo.doSomething(x); } } callingMethod() { Bar1.getFoo().doSomething(5); // Version 1 Bar2.doSomething(5); // Version 2 } In both versions, Foo and callingMethod need to be changed, but in Version 2, Bar also needs to be changed. Can someone explain the advantage of having a wrapper/facade (with the exception of adapters or wrapping an external API or exposing an internal one).

  • Windows update breaks dlls?

    I'm compiling a project which uses multiple DLL and compiles with VS2008. After a recent windows update DLLs compiled on my computer stopped working on other computers. After some investigation it turned out that it updated the CRT redistributable library which I'm compiling with from version "9.0.21022.8" to version "9.0.30729.4148" This is evident from the Manifest file of the EXE i'm compiling. it contains the following: <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC90.CRT" version="9.0.21022.8" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC90.CRT" version="9.0.30729.4148" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> Meaning it wants to use two different versions of the CRT at the same time. the second version is needed by the code which I'm compiling right now and the first version is needed by older dlls which were compiled a few weeks ago. In the computers where the application is deployed this becomes a problem since they get their CRT dll from a local folder called Microsoft.VC90.CRT and not from WinSXS. This folder can't contain two different versions of the dll. Is there a known solution to this issue or do I need to start compiling all of the other DLLs with the new CRT?
