• Remote Desktop to Server 2008 fails from one particular Win7 client

  I have a VPS running Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I'm able to connect using Remote Desktop from my home PC (Windows 7), personal laptop (Windows 7), and work laptop (Windows XP). However, I cannot connect from my work PC (Windows 7). I receive the error "The logon attempt failed" in the RDP client, and the server event log shows "An account failed to log on" with this explanation: Subject: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: - Account Domain: - Logon ID: 0x0 Logon Type: 3 Account For Which Logon Failed: Security ID: NULL SID Account Name: username Account Domain: hostname Failure Information: Failure Reason: Unknown user name or bad password. Status: 0xc000006d Sub Status: 0xc0000064 Process Information: Caller Process ID: 0x0 Caller Process Name: - Network Information: Workstation Name: JESSE-PC Source Network Address: - Source Port: - Detailed Authentication Information: Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Transited Services: - Package Name (NTLM only): - Key Length: 0 I can connect from the offending work PC if I start up Windows XP Mode and use the RDP client inside that. The server is part of a domain but my account is local, so I'm logging in using a username of the form hostname\username. None of the clients are part of a domain. The server uses a self-signed certificate, and connecting from home I get a warning about that, but connecting from work I just get the logon error.

• Why is SMF manifest losing configuration data when exported on SmartOS?

  I'm running a server process under SMF (Server Management Facility) on Joyent's Base64 1.8.1 SmartOS image. For those not aqauinted with SmartOS, it is a cloud-based distribution of IllumOS with KVM. But essentially it is like Solaris and inherits from OpenSolaris. So even if you've not used SmartOS, I'm hoping to tap into some Solaris knowledge on ServerFault. My issue is that I want an unprivileged user to be allowed to restart a service that they own. I have worked out how to do that by using RBAC and adding an authorisation to /etc/security/auth_attr and associating that authorisation with my user. I then added the following to my SMF manifest for the service: <property_group name='general' type='framework'> <!-- Allow to be restarted--> <propval name='action_authorization' type='astring' value='solaris.smf.manage.my-server-process' /> <!-- Allow to be started and stopped --> <propval name='value_authorization' type='astring' value='solaris.smf.manage.my-server-process' /> </property_group> And this works well when imported. My unprivileged user is allowed to restart, start and stop its own server process (this is for automated code deployments). However, if I export the SMF manifest, this configuration data is gone... all I see in that section is this: <property_group name='general' type='framework'> <property name='action_authorization' type='astring'/> <property name='value_authorization' type='astring'/> </property_group> Does anybody know why this is happening? Is my syntax wrong, or am I simply not using SMF incorrectly?

• Office 2007 constantly crashes, logged as Event ID 1000

  I have a user, who despite my best efforts, is having constant Office 2007 crashes. I've tried deleting their profile and setting it up again, repairing office, uninstalling completely and then reinstalling, and swapping out memory sticks. The system is running RHEL 5.3 Beta. • Copying compressed files from Server 2008 R2 network share to XP client via VPN fails

  At the first sight the question looks similar to this one. I have experienced an odd behavior while trying to copy a certain file from Windows Server 2008 R2 network share to Windows XP Professional client via VPN. The VPN was set up using RRAS on the server machine. I will try to provide as much informations as possible in order to make the issue more clear. When trying to copy the compressed file sized ~2.5 MB (via Explorer or CMD, doesn't matter), the process stalls after some 20%, producing an error message after few seconds: Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is no longer available. If i start the command ping -t 192.168.2.1 (where the IP address specified belongs to the server) side by side with the copy command, I can clearly see that the ping command times out for few seconds as the copy process stalls. When this happens all network activities are frozen. After a few seconds, the network recovers, ping continues to run normally, however the copy process stands still before it displays the above error message. Copying other files (I tried 4-5 files), of which some are larger and some are smaller, succeeds. Seems to me that I can copy all uncompressed files. As soon as I try to copy an archive, the process freezes. Even a 707 KB large archive can't be copied. I can only reproduce this behavior on 2 machines, both Windows XP Professional, one is w/ SP2 and the other w/ SP3. Other XP clients don't have this problem, neither do Windows 7 clients. If I connect to the server using Remote Desktop Connection without using VPN from either of these 2 machines (using the same user account), I can copy anything I want normally, even these "problematic" files. Does anyone have any clue about what could possibly be going on?

• Rebuild Fedora 19 ISO adding Kickstart for USB install

  I am attempting to edit a Fedora 19 DVD ISO to add a kickstart file. I then need this ISO burnt to a USB stick for instillation. The error I get when booting is Warning: Could not boot. Warning: /dev/root does not exist To try and determine which part of the process is failing I have broken the process down in to separate stages. Step 1: Burn the original ISO "Fedora-19-x86_64-DVD.iso" (Available - here) to a pendrive and see if that will install. dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdc Burning this image was successful and it installed without issue. Step 2: Exctract the ISO, repackage it and burn it to a pendrive and see if that will install. PLEASE NOTE: The final command in this section has been broken down in to multiple lines for ease of reading, in fact it was run as a single command on one line. mkdir -p /mnt/linux mount -o loop /tmp/linux-install.iso /mnt/linux cd /mnt/ tar -cvf - linux | (cd /var/tmp/ && tar -xf - ) cd /var/tmp/linux xorriso -as mkisofs -R -J -V "NewFedoraImage" -o ouput/file.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -isohybrid-mbr /usr/share/syslinux/isohdpfx.bin . This iso was then burnt to a pendrive as before. dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdc This ISO burnt to the pen drive with no problem and will boot. I then see the fedora options screen. After choosing either "Install Fedora 19" or "Test this media & install Fedora 19" I then receive the errors highlighted above. This means the kickstart file is not to blame, but repackaging the ISO. Is there something I am missing in the repackaging process? Any input would be great! NOTE: If it is of any help, I attempted Step 2 with an Ubuntu server ISO and the process was successful.

  Given: A VM running Windows 2008 I am logged on there using my domain account (SHUNRANET\markk) I have added the "Create global objects" privilege to my domain account: The VM is restarted (I know logout/logon is enough, but I had to restart) I logon again using the same domain account. It seems still to have the privilege: I run some process and examine its Security properties using the Process Explorer. The account does not seem to have the privilege: This is not an idle curiousity. I have a real problem, that without this privilege the named pipe WCF binding works neither on Windows 2008 nor on Windows 7! • How can I mount an AES-128 encrypted DMG file using the NTFS file system under Windows XP?

  I found HFSExplorer, which can handle encrypted DMG files, but it only supports HFS, and the DMG I want to open is NTFS. I can't just use any image mounter since the DMG file is encrypted, and I don't want to need to copy it over to my main hard drive first. (The DMG is on an external hard drive.) If copying it is the only way, however, I'd be willing to settle for that, but I'd rather just leave it on the external hard drive in an encrypted form.

  I'm a little embarrassed I can't seem to fix this issue: Running a Dell D630 laptop with a VGA to an external monitor. Every time the computer goes to sleep the Dualview setting reverts to single display. I click the Nvidia dualview setting again but the external monitor remains black screen. • Upstart multiple instances of service not working

  I started playing with MongoDB on Lucid. Now I would like to run a DB and Config server on the same box. They both use the same binary to launch, but with different config files and running on different ports. All directories for log and lib is split so one goes to mongodb and the other to mongoconf. Each process can be started without any problems on their own. start mongodb stop mongodb start mongoconf stop mongoconf But if I try to start both, the second one would just start and exit. Using 'initctl log-priority debug' I got the following in the logs. Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: event_finished: Finished started event Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: job_process_handler: Ignored event 1 (1) for process 5690 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) main process (5690) terminated with status 1 Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) goal changed from start to stop Jan 6 12:44:12 mongo4 init: mongoconf (mongoconf) state changed from running to stopping man 5 init shows that you can use instance names to differentiate the two. I tried using 'instance mongoconf' in the on upstart script and 'instance mongodb' in the other one, and it still fails. I can manually start the other process, so there is definitely no conflicts on port numbers or directories. Any ideas on what to try or how to get output on why it is 'terminated with status 1'? • Word 2010 creates multiple processes... sometimes

  I've run into a strange behavior when I migrated our users from Office 2007 / Vista to Office 2010 / Windows 7 (all 32-bit). They use a web based document management system called NetDocuments which stores all their .doc/.docx files. Generally, when they click on a doc from the browser window it fires up Word and opens the doc. Word has an add-in in it from NetDocs as well so it can upload the changed document directly back to the NetDocs server. I get a phone call when Word crashes, and every single time it has crashed I have witnessed multiple winword.exe processes running in task manager. I used process explorer to see what created the process, and it is all Internet Explorer. So far I have rolled them back to IE8 and the problem happens less frequently, but it still happens. When I try to duplicate the problem, I can make it happen sometimes if I open multiple documents very quickly. Using lightning fast alt-tab reflexes, I DO see that a 2nd WinWord process is created when a user clicks on a document, then it closes once the document is open. I think what is happening is that the secondary WinWord process that does some sort of NetDocs voodoo is getting stuck open. This behavior is new to Word 2010 / Windows 7 and google searching isn't coming up with much. I have seen a few posts that this is a known issue in certain circumstances and there is no "fix", but I thought it would good to ask others on this. Thanks!

• Use same url externally as internally

  If I have a web server on my home network I can connect to it from work with http://my.external.ip/whatever/ (assuming NAT and forwarding). Naturally I have a bookmark in my browser that points to http://my.external.ip/whatever/ however when I use that bookmark on my home computer (also behind NAT) the link does not work because my firewall blocks it. (firewall is a old'ish Dlink) What is the best way to fix this issue?
