• Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this. • Natively boot Virtualbox Image

  I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

• SSH with X11 forwarding to host where I don't have a home-dir

  I am trying to ssh with X11 forwarding into a host where I don't have a home directory. Because of that, xauth fails and X11 doesn't seem to work. • 3.5mm headphone jack -> Component video?

  Hello, I have a strange cord that has a male 3.5mm headphone jack on one side, and some component video and audio ouputs on the other. When I plug the headphone side into my computer, and the other side into my TV, I get audio across the cable, but no video. How can I send some video over the headphone jack in OS X? I know you can, because this cable is actually for a Beyblade toy and it somehow transferred video over this cable. Thanks, Isaac I think I found some more information (from Wikipedia:) "A four conductor version (of a 3.5mm headphone jack) is becoming a de facto standard output connector for compact camcorders, providing stereo sound plus a video signal." So how can I do this on Mac?

• serving static assets via http is really slow compared to sshfs (apache2/nginx)

  After migrating to a new VPS I had some users complaining about slow loading images on their sites. After creating some test files with dd I realized that I can download all files via sshfs with full speed while downloads via web are painfully slow. The larger the file is and the longer the transfer takes, the slower the transfer speed gets. I thought I had some problems with Apache and just spend the whole evening with replacing Apache2 against nginx for static file serving - with no effect at all. No I/O wait states in top. Tons of RAM free, no high CPU utilization and hdparm shows a decent I/O performance at all times. I just have no idea anymore, what's happening on this server.   I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the actual de facto standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now? Why didn't it happen sooner? Are there things to look out for when buying a 4K sector hard drive? e.g. incompatibility? Anything else we should know about 4K sectors?

• gitolite post commit hook to update redmine's repository

  Hello, I currently have a ubuntu server machine which has gitolite and redmine installed. Redmine accesses repository copies which are updated using a cron task. Having a cron task to pull the updates seems like an overkill is there anyway a gitolite post-commit script could execute a pull as the redmine user. My current update script looks like this: */15 * * * * redmine cd /home/redmine/repositories/support && git pull The post-commit script I guess should be similar, how can I give the gitolite user the privileges to execute the pull as the redmine user? • Alternative to Windows Home Server (WHS) backups

  Since Microsoft announced the end of life for WHS, are there any alternatives? Specifically, I am interested in recovering from a catastrophic disk failure with WHS. For example, this is my ideal scenario when a desktop hard-drive fails (has a bad virus, etc): Install a disk of the same size or greater Boot the desktop with the Recovery Disc Point the recovery application at the WHS Pick the machine, the drive(s) and the date of the backup Have a couple beers Reboot to a working machine as if nothing happened. I would need to slap multiple disks in the machine without raid. It sounds like LVM will work here. It would be nice, but not required to have de-duplication of files when multiple machines are backed up. (Single Instance Storage)

  A few days ago I bought a HP Envy 14, containing 2 graphics card: An integrated Intel graphics card, and an ATI HD 5650. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on the machine. Most things work fine out of the box, but the graphics cards are giving me trouble. When booting, I get the message "failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". Then the screen blanks out during the remaining boot period. I am able to get the display working by changing to one of the consoles, then closing and opening the laptop's lid. It seems that Ubuntu gets confused about which card to use. I've read here: http://www.andreas-demmer.de/en/2010/07/18/testbericht-linux-auf-dem-hp-envy-14 that I should be able to turn off one the cards by echoing keywords into /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch, but that path is not available on my system. The BIOS does not have any methods to switch of the ATI card. Help anyone? /Carsten

  I work at a relatively small company, around 30 people and we are now looking into a solution that can handle: File sharing. Email server. Calendar support. Around 30 users. Accessible from external network. Support for Windows XP (and above), Mac OS 10.6.3 and Ubuntu clients. When it comes down to security we don't have the experience to comment on that. • Try to delete files used by IIS

  I got a service coded in c# whoes deleted somes web site files hosted on iis, before an update. But sometime when i delete the files, they stay there. If I try to delete them manually, via explorer, the file are not deletable, because they are in state "Delete pending". • Decrypting Windows XP encrypted files from an old disk

  I had an old Windows XP machine with an encrypted directory. When moving to a new Win7 machine I connected the old disk as a slave in the new machine, and hence cannot access the encrypted files. Chances don't seem good as documentation warns you: "Do not Delete or Rename a User's account from which will want to Recover the Encrypted Files. You will not be able to de-crypt the files using the steps outlined above." On the other hand, I have full access to the machine, so maybe there's a utility which can extract the keys and use the to decrypt the files... BTW, I didn't have a password in the old machine, if it's relevant. Ideas, anyone? Thanks!

• Problems with Adobe Flash

  I'm running Windows 7, 64-Bit on a Core-i5 HP Notebook. For approximately the last 3 months, I've had major problems with Adobe Flash. Flash has been uninstalled and installed again multiple times. No changes. Here is what happens in different browsers: (All browsers are in the latest version as of this post) Firefox: Doesn't work at all. This bothers me most, since FF is my favorite browser; I'm using a lot of Plugins. Have tried to de-activate all Plugins, but no change. IE and Chrome: Works, but most pages with Flash are stuck during page load for ~30 seconds. After that, everything is fine. Opera: No problems, everything working as it should. Strange, eh? Any help is highly appreciated!

  All, Situation We are in retail industry with about 10 distributors and use Solomon as the standard ERP for all our systems Each distributor has 1 HQ and 5 - 10 branches, each branch has their own server (Windows 2000/XP/2003 + Solomon + another built-in POS system) Everyday, branches has to extract data and send (via email/Skype) to HQ for data consolidation purpose When we first deployed our ERP, the infrastructure (e.g. Internet connection) wasn't reliable enough. That's why we went with the de-centralized model (each branch got their own server) Now, the infrastructure is mature already. And we need to consolidate data more quickly (not from branches -- HQ -- our company but something like HQ -- our company only) Goal We just have Solomon servers in distributor HQ. All the transactions in branches (retrieved from POS) will by synchronized with HQ server directly) There is a backup plan just in case the Internet goes down, or HQ server goes down Question With the above question, could you guys suggests some model for me ? • Moving MS Exchange 2007 to another machine

  We have a machine that has been chugging along with the burden of both Exchange and DC and DNS all with SBS 2008. We have a better machine now and I'd like to move Exchange 2007 to that machine and take it off of this machine. In fact, I'm planning on formatting the old machine and get rid of SBS all together because it is making the machine SLOW. How would I go about making the move? I've read on previous versions of Exchange (2000), that all you do is install Exchange on the new machine and then start moving mailboxes one after the other. Well, what about all the different rules we have in place? How do those get moved? How do we de-commission the old exchange and set up the new exchange as the primary one? Come to think of it, how do we have both exchanges recognize each other on the same domain? TIA

• How to edit semi-plaintext file and maintaining character structure?

  I am using a software (Groupmail from Infacta) that uses exact / absolute %PATHS% for saving some settings in specific semi-plaintext file. This is a really bad idea because you can't move to USER folder, or like my case it does not work after migrating to a new computer with different language. For example: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Infacta is different than C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Configuración local\Datos de programa\Infacta Obviously, the software does not work well. I tried to solve this using Find/Replace the new PATH with Notepad++. While the Groupmail software loads well and shows settings correctly, the software fails when trying to save data on that file. I guess this is because length or number of replaced characters is different and also it corrupt the file. Please could you help me to edit this file maintaining file integrity / structure?

  Using systems like TrueCrypt, when I have to define a new password I am often informed that using a short password is insecure and "very easy" to break by brute-force. I always use passwords of 8 characters in length, which are not based on dictionary words, which consists of characters from the set A-Z, a-z, 0-9 I.e. I use password like sDvE98f1 How easy is it to crack such a password by brute-force? I.e. how fast. I know it heavily depends on the hardware but maybe someone could give me an estimate how long it would take to do this on a dual core with 2GHZ or whatever to have a frame of reference for the hardware. To briute-force attack such a password one needs not only to cycle through all combinations but also try to de-crypt with each guessed password which also needs some time. Also, is there some software to brute-force hack truecrypt because I want to try to brute-force crack my own passsword to see how long it takes if it is really that "very easy".

• Cloud based backup solutions based on open standards?

  I am looking for a solution to backup and consolidate important media from a couple Windows laptops and Mac laptop. I would like a solutions that based on open standards, so my data isn't trapped by proprietary formats and proprietary protocols. I would like the ability to switch clients or change providers in the future. For example, something like Jungle Disk plus S3 sounds like a great option. However, I am having trouble confirming how or if this can be setup meeting this criteria. Are there any real or de-facto standards for treating S3 as a filesystem? If so, what Windows and Mac clients support these standards?

• WCF WebService: Client can't connect, as soon as request client cerficate is activated.

  I have an .NET 3.5 WCF WebService hostet in IIS 6 and using a SSL certificate. The communication between client and server works. Then I activate "request client certificate" and the client can't connect anymore Exception: System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityNegotiationException: Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS with authority 'polizei-bv.stadt.hamburg.de'. Inner Exception: System.Net.WebException: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel. The certificate, the client uses is in the certificate store (local computer), the root ca is int the trusted root certification authorities store. Where can I check for an explanation on the server side? How can I check if the client really supplies it's certificate (client is not on my side)?

• Frustration with superuser.com user interface (please migrate this to "meta")

  Can someone please migrate this question to "meta" for me? I'm unable to post there while I wait for OpenID to fix my password problems. Thanks. I'm having problems with superuser.com's interface -- when I provide an answer to a question, sometimes the buttons get locked and then I find out that the question was migrated. Usually I can go back and copy-and-paste my answer at whatever site it goes to, but on occasion my answer is lost and I have to re-type it. This is very time-consuming, and makes it quite frustrating to use the system. In addition, I find that I'm wasting a lot of time dealing with having to re-register on the other sites. My suggestion is to not de-activate the "Submit answer" button but to just forward that along to the migrated site automatically, thus ensuring that answers that people put a lot of effort into don't get lost.   I'm considering setting up a PC as a Media Center. Mainly to watch movies (ideally HD quality) and listening to music, but also to perform tasks like e-mail, web browsing, ... I quite like the looks and the price of this barebone: http://www.asus.de/Barebone_PC/S_Series_7L/S2P8H61E However it comes with integrated graphics and audio and only has one free PCI-Express slot. Which would mean in the worst case, where both integrated graphics and audio turn out to be insufficient, I could only upgrade one. • Editing the Microsoft Security Essentials context-menu

  As all MSE users would know, the context-menu item that it adds to Explorer is really long, with one whole sentence "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials...". Is there a way to edit this and shorten it? I figured out the the file shellext.dll is responsible for registering the context menu. I used ResEdit to edit the DLL and changed the string table entry from Scan with ($BrandName) to Scan with MSE. But it still won't change. I've also tried de-registering the DLL and then registering it again. No luck! Any ideas? Or am I doing something wrong?
