• Clearing Windows file share "memory"

  I'm currently upgrading a Samba file server (from 3.0.23d to 3.4.3). I have a problem on the Windows client side: if the client was accessing a UNC path or mapped drive from the Samba server before the upgrade, then after the upgrade those paths or drives are not accessible. However, I can consistently resolve the client side problem for good by rebooting the client and then re-mapping all of the mapped drives. The problem appears to be related to the client's "memory" of the pre-upgrade Samba server, which the reboot and re-map clears. I have the same issue and same fix on Windows XP SP3 and Windows Server 2003 SP2. This question is specifically: is it possible to reproduce the benefits of the Windows reboot without actually rebooting the client? I have tried restarting various Windows services, disabling and enabling the network, logging out and back in again, but nothing except a reboot appears to do the trick.

• Subscript/Superscript Hotkey for Excel 2010 Macro?

  Background In Excel 2010, for some ridiculous reason, there is no built-in hotkey (or even a button on the toolbar) for subscripting/superscripting text within a text cell. You can, however, highlight the text, right-click the selection, click format, and then check the [x] subscript or [x] superscript checkbox. Question Are there any kinds of excel macros or workarounds to map two keyboard hotkeys to the subscript and superscript keys, respectively? (It should only be, like, two lines of code - one for the event handler and one for the actual procedure call... I would write one myself but my VBA is rusty, at best, and I am pretty confident there is probably already some kind of solution, despite my inability to find one via search engine) Thanks for any help you can provide!

  Before Windows 8, the Alt+Shift shortcut changed the input method (keyboard layout) for the current app. This permitted to map an input method to each app. For example I could keep the default layout for my apps where I write in english and switch to a french layout in apps where I write in french. This was working great: each app had his keyboard layout. Now with Windows 8 the Alt+Shift key has a global behavior for all applications. This meens I have to change my input method almost each time I change from app to app. Is there a way to restore the pre-Windows-8 behavior? Or is there another shortcut?

• Underlying Concept Behind Keyboard Mappings

  I am frustrated with key mapping issues. On my Linux box, if I type Home/End in Vim, then the cursor actually moves to the beginning/end of the line. On my Mac when I am on TextEdit, if I do Fn + Left or Fn + Right, it takes me to beginning/end of the line. But if I am on Vim on my Mac terminal, then the same key combinations don't work. Why? I see online all the different cryptic settings that I have to paste in .vimrc to make this work, but I can't find any explanation for those cryptic map, imap settings. What is the underlying issue here, and how can I fix it? Thanks!

• Iptables port mapping from two PCs to one

  We have 3 PCs, two of it are connected to internet (both of it have 2 NIC) PC1: eth0 - 1.0.0.1 (external IP) eth1 - 172.16.0.1 (internal IP) PC2: eth0 - 1.0.0.2 (external IP) eth1 - 172.16.0.2 (internal IP) PC3: eth0 - 172.16.0.3 (internal IP) Now we want to map port 80 from PC1 and PC2 to PC3. But there is the problem: iptables port forwarding works well from PC1 or PC2, but only in case if PC3 have PC1 or PC2 as gateway. So, question is: can we have port mapping from both PC1 and PC2 regardless of gateway settings on PC3? Thank you in advance.

  Hi, I am wanting to implement a multi-server specialised hosting environment. I currently have a cloud solution comprising of 3 centos boxes (2 lamp web servers, 1 mysql). What I am wanting to do is, implement a 5 server solution where they is 3 web servers, 1 mysql box and a fileshare. Basically I want the fileshare to host all the web files for the servers, the caching will remain on the individual servers and the sessions will be stored in mysql. So what I am asking is how do I map the servers to share the same "docroot"? Is it NFS? if so whats the best way about doing this? Thanks in advance.

• What is a Dynamic way to Connect to a Virtual Machine's Webserver from its Host Machine? [closed]

  As a Web-Developer what is the most efficient (automated) way to connect to a Virtual Machine (VM) running a development webserver from it’s Host Machine (the machine running the VM) when you do not have control over the networks (home, Startbucks, work, etc) you are connected to? Currently I start my VM (a VirtualBox VM running CentOS), run ifconfig to determine the VM’s current IP. I then take that IP and map it my Host machine’s host file so that I can access the VM’s webserver from the Host. I feel that this is not an efficient way to connect to my VM’s webserver because each time I connect to a new network (a few times a day) I need to repeat the IP look up and host file update, and sometimes restart the VM's network service.

  I have an IPSec VPN on my Windows 7 machine (all using the native Windows 7 gateway). The host I am connecting to has different ISAKMP "Phase 1" and "Phase 2" IP addresses. As I understand, the Phase 1 address is that of the IPsec endpoint, to which I can connect just fine. The Phase 2 address is found in their "crypto map", and the addresses need to match. At the moment, both my Phase 1 and Phase 2 addresses are configured the same. On my side, I get the error "Error 791: The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" How can I configure the Phase 2 IP address for my Windows 7 IPSec VPN to be different to the IPSec endpoint address?

The Pinnacle software that comes with my usb stick and distant tv server is a superior solution. How can I get it work with xbmc?   I have a front end server acting as a gateway proxy for many (a dynamic 'many') building monitors with embedded webservers. They are accessed with a URL like: http://www.example.com/monitor1/ http://www.example.com/monitor2/ ... I'm trying to restrict access to these monitors to only the users that own them. So what I need is a way of specifying rights to users or groups for specific directories. The standard auth mechanisms I see in Apache won't work because I need to specify every location. I'd prefer some dynamic map or script. Any suggestions?

  I worked at a place last year that had a very small image for Windows XP re-builds. It was two Norton GHO files, totalling about 2-3 GB. This is how it worked: Boot into Norton Ghost Map to the network share where the images lived Apply the image to the workstation Reboot It would then load into Windows Setup Enter the Domain Admin credentials so it can join the domain That's it... it would then reboot into Windows and the image was complete. How did they make an image so small? Did they perhaps kick off a Windows install and create an image then? I particularly liked how it required no user input other than a domain admin login.

  I am trying the Emacs MULE ITRANS input method to enter Devanagari unicode text. I am looking to enter a key sequence for Devanagari letter "Half-R" (??) i.e. U0931 U094d (which should be mapped to R according to the ITRANS Wikipedia page). While all other keys in the map work fine, this particular one does not! I know I can use M-x ucs-insert (or CTRL-x-8 RET) to enter this sequence, but it is getting tiresome. How do I fix this problem ?

Our shared drive is a network folder on a Windows Server located at one of our locations. The current connection speed is terrible. The upload speed at the current location of the shared drive is very slow. We looking for a NAS device that we can host at another location with better upload speed that all of us can access. I am looking for a NAS device that has these features: Minimal Maintenance as we do not have dedicated IT resources Access data on the device from multiple locations. • Hosting website when port 80 is taken?

  A few months ago, we purchased an R-HUB unit to replace WebEx for remote support. The device operates through port 80, ehich doesn't appear to be configurable. I know in IIS, you can specify a port besides port 80, but the problem is in the port forwarding. On our router, we have to map an incoming port to the forward port which then directs traffic to the node (webserver). However, the incoming port for both the webserver and the R-HUB is 80 - and the server seems to be getting confused as I can only get to the R-HUB, not the website. How can I expose both devices? Host header headers? DNS config?

• Users own mapped network drives disappear when I set a GPP mapped drive

  All the clients use Windows 7 SP1 x64 Enterprise. The domain controllers are Windows Server 2008 R2. I have configured the GPP to map "\server\data" to first available drive letter starting with I:. The action is replace and I have set the Hide/Show this drive and Hide/Show all drives to "Show". I have set targeting to a specified security group. This works as expected and the drive is mapped to the correct users. The problem is that if the user has created their own mapped drives these mappings will disappear when the GPP mapping is applied. Only the mapped drives from the GPP is shown in Explorer. I have not found any other mention of this particular problem when I search the Internet and on TechNet there is no mention of what happens to drives already mapped.

• Windows 7 Mapped Network Drive Multiplying to Create Duplicates all the way to Z:

  A strange issue came in today from some users. At least two Windows 7 x64 boxes that have duplicate mappings of a network drive. The drive is not mapped with a log in script, but done manual through "Map Network Drive". Everything has been fine for months, but all of the sudden, Explorer looks like this: Files (\\fileServerPath) (S:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (T:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (U:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (V:) Files (\\otherServerPath) (W:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (X:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Y:) Files (\\fileServerPath) (Z:) There are some other networks drives mixed in there that did not duplicate. The drive is normally mapped to S:\, but it decided to make its way to Z:. What is going on here?   My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

• Windows 7 network share issues w/XP & SBS 2K3

  Hi, my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit computer has issues when accessing SBS 2K3 or XP shares. 1) It will not automagically reconnect upon boot. I have a batch file that will do this that utilizes net use (yes I have /persist:yes, but it does not help) to re-map them. 2) After trying to use it for a few minutes, it will not work. Any attempt to access the drive letter that was mapped causes windows Explorer, or other apps. to lock up. These shares work fine from XP & Vista computers. When this happens the internet works fine, just the mapped drives do not work correctly.

• Cannot connect Solaris 10 to Windows 7

  I'm trying to connect a Solaris VM (powered by VMware Player) to Windows Explorer in Windows 7. When I try to map the network drive I get the following: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. I am using the following URL which has worked on a machine I used before. The only thing that has changed is the IP address of the Solaris machine. • rsync: files copied with hidden attribute

  I run a backup from Windows 7 machine to Mac machine running Mountain Lion using rsync that is packaged in DeltaCopy application. I can't use DeltaCopy interface because the destination is a mapped drive (Mac's samba drive). So here is my setup: I have a folder in Mac that is the destination folder and I share this folder via Samba share. On windows machine, I map this samba share to a drive (let's say M:/) I run rsync: rsync -arv --delete "/cygdrive/C//origin/" "/cygdrive/M//mybackup/" it runs fine except that all files on the destination are hidden. Anyone has an idea on what's happening here? I really appreciate any feedback. Thank you.
