  I would like to understand some fundamental VS version differences, What is the difference between Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Does the Team System 2008 include VS2008, TFS 2008 & Team Explorer 2008? Furthermore, what is the difference betwene Team System 2008 and Team Suite 2008? I beleive there are no more Team Suites or Team Systems in 2010? Does Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 include all Team System components, like TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010, so in effect it is like an upgrade of Visual Studio 2008 Team System? Or does TFS 2010 & Team Explorer 2010 need to be installed separately?

• Linux router and firewall with IP accounting

  I'm working on a project to replace my organisation's aging Slackware gateway/router/firewall machine in our colo rack. Previously we used rc.firewall but we are now looking for something more modern and easily configurable. The requirements are: Act as a gateway router & firewall Port forwarding to a Terminal Server in the colo IP/traffic accounting, preferably accessible via SNMP (already using cacti for other servers) Possibility of acting as a PPTP server & routing these connections Is not an out-of-the-box Cisco product (don't have the finances or support to maintain it) I'd prefer to use Ubuntu or some other Debian-based distro but something that integrates everything we're looking for is certainly an option if it offers all the desired features and is easy to configure. Is there a simple set of packages that will provide me with the Firewall & Accounting features, or am I best served with a custom-built distro / other solution?

  In my bash scripts I have been using something like: until fping -u google.com; do echo "$0[$$] Network/DNS down?? $(date)" 1>&2 && sleep $(($RANDOM%(1 + ++trynum * 1) +1)).222; done to test for online connectivity. It halts in place, sleeping growing random intervals, until it can ping google.com again. Problem: At some sites ICMP pings are blocked altogether, and web pages are still reachable. What's a short way to test for this general case? Based on that test I will switch over to an http-based test like the exit status of curl -s google.com >/dev/null if that is a good one.

• over Windows terminal change cursor width or color in Vim depending on mode

  I am using PuTTY to connect over SSH to an Ubuntu server from my Windows 7 workstation. Once connected I am using the Vim installation from the Ubuntu server to edit files. I want the cursor to change when I go into and out of insert mode. Part of my .vimrc file is like this but it is not changing the cursor: if &term =~ "xterm" echo "xTerm!!inate!" let &t_SI = "\<Esc>]12;purple\x7" let &t_EI = "\<Esc>]12;blue\x7" endif I know that the if statement is executing because of the echo. EDIT: Actually I would prefer to change the cursor to be a vertical line like you can in the PuTTY settings rather than change the color, or maybe even do both. But just changing the color would be a lot better than nothing. Also I am willing to change terminals if there is another Windows 7 Professionsal 64 bit compatible terminal that can do this (preferably something free). Maybe Poderosa can do this?

• Can two users both control a third machine simultaneously using Synergy?

  I've been a Synergy user for some time now, as I use a PC on the left side of my Mac. My girlfriend and I both have our desks on each side of the other, and we'd like to know if it were possible for the both of us to control the PC in the middle, with our own separate mouse & keyboards. Here's a crude drawing of our setup (1) her pc (2) my pc (3) my mac Currently, 3 is running a synergy server, and 2 is running the client. But like I said, I'm wondering if there's a way for 1 & 3 to both control 2 with their own mouse and keyboard. I'd ~love~ to have it set up where we could go even farther, and have both of our mice & keyboards able to control all 3 computers at the same time, for moments when we need to click or press keys for each other. But that seems a little too much to ask! Any thoughts?

• How to configure my hosting provider for email when DNS redirection already in place?

  First of all I apologize for my poor understanding of network and I hope I used the correct terminology for everything: I have bought a domain name with 1&1 to create an online shop, using kingeshop. I followed the steps explains here to point the domain name to kingeshop IP address and everything is working fine. Now I would also like to use my domain name to create an email account. But 1&1 seems to say they're not responsible for this now the DNS is transfered to kingeshop's. What I'm wondering is who is really "in charge" of my domain name now? 1&1 also lets me configure the MX-record but I don't have a clue what I can do with this. Could I just use an existing gmail address somehow? Thanks a lot for any help or clarity you can bring me on that matter!

  I set up a crontab in Cpanel to run every min. It's working great but I don't want an e-mail every min. I have a second cron tab that runs every day. I would like the responce of this tab. Is there a way to tell the crontab to be silent or only e-mail on error? I have: * * * * * php /home/public_html/folder/file.php 2>&1 The last bit 2>&1 I added because i thought it would make it silent. From the Cpanel Docs: You can have cron send an email everytime it runs a command.   I have Windows 7 64bit as my OS + SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can connect to SQL Databases (2008), but cannot connect to a SQL 2005 database. I can, however, connect to the 2005 SQL Database on a PC that has Windows XP as the OS and also has SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. So it seems that it works fine on XP but not on Windows 7 (32 or 64bit). is this an Operating System issue?   Google Analytics use some query parameters to identify campaigns and to do cookie control. This is all handled by javascript code. Take a look at the following example: http://www.example.com/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_ter m=October%2B2008&utm_campaign=promotion This will set cookies via JavaScript with the right campaign origin. This query parameters can have multiple and sometimes random values. Since they are used as cache hash keys the cache performance is heavily degraded in some scenarios. I suppose there's a not so hard configuration on cache servers to just ignore all query parameters or specific query parameters. Am I right? Does anyone know how hard is it in popular web cache solutions, to create ? I'm not interested in a specific web cache solution. It would be great to hear about the one you use.

  I have a VPS which is my public web server for all my clients. It's running server 2008 and I would like to have it connect via secure connection to my internal LAN. I would like this to be a route so access is bi-derectional. Have read about Server & Domain isolation, but am concerned this may prevent public views to the webs sites on the server. I currently have a PPTP tunnel, but I'm wanting better security (IPSec or SSL etc) and it's not given my bi derectional access. (In fact my backups aren't copying accross but this could be an acl issue) The goal is to provide easy/automated backups of data & sql db's to my internal LAN, as well as a means to provision new sites & db's from a workflow occuring internally.   I installed Debian with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 on a Hyper-V virtual machine. I had to add a legacy network card. Is there any other way to load hyper-v drivers? I really need to change that legacy network card because my debian machine is going to be used as proxy. Thank you.

  On a new db server I only have 10 disks to play with, The usage is about a booking every 3-5 seconds, so not high volume, I know compromises have to be made, but my initial thoughts are - DISK 1 & 2 - RAID 1 - OS DISKS 3,4,5,6 - RAID 10 - Data, Indexes & TempDB DISKS 7,8,9,10 - RAID 10 - Logs & Backup Full backups will take place when there is virtually no traffic on the website so not bothered about the contention with the logs. disk 3-10 - 8kb NTFS unit allocation size disk 3-10 - 64kb Disk Stripe size does this seems to be sensible, any other considerations I have omitted ? thanks

  I have some checksums.md5 verification files from an ntfs external drive, but using windows notation: \ instead of /, spaces between file names (not escaped), reserved shell characters (like (, &, ', to name a few). The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My\ Windows\ \&\ Files\ \(2010\)/\[bak\]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames?

• Ubuntu Server login not recognizing the keyboard after entering username.

  I'm having similar issues with logging into ubuntu server. chief problem is that once I enter my user name & hit enter, I can't enter anything ffor my password - it won't accept any keystrokes until I press Ctrl+any key. Once I've pressed Ctrl+ any key, I'm able to type again, but have never been able to enter any more than 3 characters before the 60 sec time limit. This problem is present on fresh installs of both 10.04 & 9.10. Part of the problem is lkely to be my antique pc which is an old Emachines Trigems I850 based mbd and an equally ancient Nvidia 4x AGP video card. Initially I was going to install Ubuntu 10.10, but with ORCA running with both screen reader and full screen magnification crashed the system & smoked a stick of Rambus memory. Is there any fix to this problem? Jeff

They are not admins of any kind. It looks like it is asking for permission to allow SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 to run. When I put my credentials in, it just brings up the Print dialog box (this is fine, just stop asking for credentials). I know this might sound silly but I downloaded and installed "SQL Server Reporting Services 2008" hopping my credentials would give permission right from the beginning. Giving the users local admin, I was told is not an option. Note: I did post this on community (dot) dynamics (dot) com but, they are not a very active website. Thanks for any help even if it just points me in the right direction!

I've tried several variations including: (&(!(ou:dn:=DisabledPCs))) As well as putting it in different locations in the filter (not that I thought it would make a difference, but I obviously don't know that...)
