• A little guidance setting up FTP server authentication on Windows Server 2008 R2 standard?

  I have a (clean) server running Windows Server 2008 R2 standard. I would just like to use it for serving a website and a FTP server through IIS. IIS is installed and serves my website propery. I have now added a FTP site but when I try to logon using my user/pass i get the following error: 530 User cannot login From this article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200475) I understand that these four causes can be pointed out: The Allow only anonymous connections security setting has been turned on in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Not the case The username does not have the Log on locally permission in User Manager. The user is in the Users group, however I'm not able to logon through RDP. I tried configuring this by following this article through GPMC however this only works when I'm logged in as a domain user on a domain controller which I'm not: I'm logged in as administrator The username does not have the Access this computer from the network permission in User Manager. Not sure what this implies...? The Domain Name was not specified together with the username (in the form of DOMAIN\username). Tried adding the server name: server\username, not working... I am an absolute server noob and I'd just like to be able to connect through FTP... Any guidance is highly appreciated!

• SBS 2008 R2: Did something change with anonymous relays?

  Have noticed that prior documentation on setting up anonymous relays in SBS 2008 no longer work without some additional configuration. Used to be able to follow this documentation, which is basically: setup a new receive connector add the IP address(es) that will be permitted to relay check off "anonymous" under Permission Group and then run the Exchange shell script to grant permissions. Now what seems to be happening is that if the permitted IP address happens to fall within the same address space as another more restrictive Receive Connector (like the "Default SBS08" one) and possibly if it's ahead of the new Receive Connector alphabetically (haven't tested that yet), the relay attempt fails with "Client Was Not Authenticated" error. To get it to work, I had to modify the scope of the "Default SBS08" Receive Connector to exclude the one LAN IP that I wanted to allow relaying for. I can't recall ever having to do this for Exchange 2007 Standard and/or any other SBS 2008 servers I've setup over the last couple of years and I don't remember doing this and the wiki entry I added at the office doesn't mention it either. So my question is, has anyone else experienced this? Has there been a new change with R2 or perhaps an Exchange Service Pack?

• Why am I missing 4GB of RAM on Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit?

  I noticed today that a server was very low on memory. It physically has 8GB installed and runs Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit. It also hosts 2 virtual machines using HyperV. Server is Dell Poweredge R510. However the host OS reports in task manager that it only has 4GB of RAM, despite actually having 8GB and it being a 64bit OS. Computer properties shows Installed memory: 8.00GB (3.99GB usuable). Why would "usable" be half the real RAM installed under a 64bit OS? Additionally nearly all of the 4GB of visible RAM on the host OS is being used by something without anything showing up in task manager (presumably HyperV as it's allocated 3.6GB to the virtual machines its hosting). However that doesn't explain where the other 4GB has gone which Windows can't even see. Where is my missing 4GB of RAM? Update: Dell OpenManage says this: Total Installed Capacity 8192 MB Total Installed Capacity Available to the OS 4096 MB So looks like Nathan's suggestion of memory mirroring might be correct. I'll have to reboot to check this (I think?) Update 2 OK. So I reboot and I get a message saying "the amount of system memory has changed" (despite not having touched the hardware in a year). Once Windows has booted, all 8GB is visible again. Looks like I probably have a hardware RAM issue (I'll perhaps try reseating it whenever I can chuck everyone off the server next). Thanks for your answers and comments. I was hoping it was going to be the mirrored-RAM option but it seems not - that's not even mentioned in the BIOS.

• Server 2008 R2 boot is at 2 hours and counting. What now?

  This morning, we rebooted our Server 2008 R2 box. No problem, came right back up. Then we shut it down and let it install windows updates. While it was off, we added some RAM. Then we turned it back on. The system came right back up to the "press ctrl-alt-delete" screen, so far, so good. I logged in. The system got as far as "Applying Group Policy" -- then spent almost an hour applying drive mappings. Finally finished that, and has now spent 30 minutes on waiting for the Event Notification Service. I still haven't been able to log in. Remote desktop service doesn't appear to be running yet. I tried viewing the event log from another machine. I see that the box is writing to the Security log, but there are no events in System or Application in the last 45 minutes. Digging through the System log of events from 45 minutes ago, I see a bunch of timeouts: A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service. [lots of these] A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the wuauserv service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SessionEnv service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service. A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CertPropSvc service. What can I do? Should I try shutting it down remotely, or will that do more damage?

• How do I add two alternating UITableViews to an existing UINavigationController view?

  I'm new to iPhone development and I am writing an iPhone app that needs two different table views, which are selectable using a button bar or tab bar. These table views are both the same size, but only cover about two thirds of the screen from the bottom up. The top portion of the screen remains the same when either of these tables is displayed. I'd also like to animate (flip) these views when the user selects one or the other. The view that these two tables will be displayed on is the detail view of my app where the user has already selected an item from the primary screen's table. I'm using a UINavigationController to manage the primary and detail views and I have this working. I also have the first of these two detail tables working as part of my detail view, but I think it makes more sense to isolate the code for these two tables and not duplicate all of the code for the part of the detail view that doesn't change. I don't really care how these two table views are created (either in code or via IB). I've tried several things and I can't seem to figure it out. Any help or ideas (with sample code) would be greatly appreciated!

• Why are two indicator-network versions being worked on?

  Some months ago, on the road to Ubuntu Maverick, a new system indicator, network (with connman as a backend), started to be developed. The plan was to get it into UNE and release it with no notifcation area. Unfortunately it didn't make it into the final version. However, continued efforts are still being made to improve it, and I'm getting regular updates. From a blueprint from the last UDS, I read that the plan was to ship no notification area and only indicators. For that, it was defined that nm-applet (backend: NetworkManager) should be ported to the appindicator library. Today I discovered that those efforts are going on and a initial version is available for testing, available from Matt Trudel PPA (Natty only). So, my questions is, to whoever has the necessary info: wouldn't it be easier to join efforts and concentrate the work in just one version (probably NetworkManager backend, as that's the official plan), instead of breaking those efforts apart and hampering both testing and developing? Both indicators are being developed by Canonical engineers, and that really doesn't make much sense. So, any Canonical engineer willing to clarify this?

• Configure one IIS site to handle two separate SSL certificates using external Load Balancing or SSL Acceleration Servers

  I have one web application on our server that needs to be referenced by two different domain names, both of which have their own SSL certificates. The application is exactly the same for both domains, but we have to keep the two domain names for legal reasons. The problem is that, since both domains need to have their own SSL certificate, that inside of our IIS 7.5 configuration we have to have two separate IIS applications (both pointing to the same physical location) with their own unique IP address and SSL certificate installed. Now, I know that, due to the nature of SSL communications, that this is by design and that you can't assign more than one SSL certificate per IP address and domain name. My question is… is there any way around this limitation and keep one web application in IIS and have it service two SSL certificates based on host name? I know that with the basic IIS configuration that this is not possible, but I was thinking that with some sort of combination of external load balancing and/or SSL acceleration servers/services that we could have these servers process the SSL request and leave IIS clean to have one single application. I am not familiar at all with these technologies, hence the reason I am asking if it is theoretically possible. If not, does anyone else know how to achieve this?

• How can I get Windows 7 to work with two Nvidia graphics cards with different drivers?

  This is similar to this question, but I am using more similar cards with Windows 7. I just purchased a Zotac Nvidia GeForce 7200 GS. I have a motherboard with two PCI Express x16 slots. There is already an MSI Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS being used as the primary card, driving two LCD monitors. I would like the Zotac to output to a TV via DVI-out. Unfortunately, when Windows detects the Zotac and installs its drivers, or I manually install them, Windows stops being able to boot up. If I remove them and re-install the MSI 8800 drivers, I can boot again, but Windows can no longer see the Zotac 7200--it shows up as a yellow triangle in Device Manager. I've read conflicting reports about this. Some people claim that Windows 7 will support multiple heterogeneous graphics card drivers, as long as they are all using the same driver API ("WDDM?"). Others say that they have to be using the exact same driver, or it won't work. Others claim that you have to use the exact same card. which is it, exactly? I know I can run the MSI 8800 in SLI if I purchase another, but I don't need that kind of power--I just need HD-out to my television. I read somewhere that running two cards in SLI precludes you from using 100% of their output ports, so I'm not sure if that's an option. I suppose I could also run two MSI 8800's without SLI, but again, that's more power than I need (and more money than I'd like to spend). Also, I don't think this exact model is even manufactured anymore. Any ideas?

  Hello, I own Sony Vaio Z laptop with two external USB ports. It's quite new and has USB 2.0 support. I'm using Vista x64 on it. I also have two external usb hard drives, Iomega 500GB and WD for 1TB. Every hard drive has USB 2.0 support. I connect two devices to my laptop and trying to copy date from one hard drive to another. But it takes a lot of time! The speed is about 15 Megabytes per second. I have to wait toooooo long to copy all the information from one hard drive to another. When I try to copy information from my internal (SSD) hard drive, it works fine for both external drives. The speed is very high and it shows me something about 100 Megabytes per second. It makes me feel that USB 2.0 is OK on both drives. But when I'm trying to copy from one external drive to another external, I still get very low speed. I checked out Device Manager and here is the settings I have: (sorry, can't upload image because of my rating, check this url: http://picbite.com/image/122073daljo/ ) I think it's because two of my external drives use the same USB 2.0 controller. • Can a VM perform better when only two cores instead of four cores are presented to it?

  We had a VMWare VM at work with two cores allocated to it that ran a pretty heinous process in IIS. Under load the process was maxing out the CPU usage on both cores, so we asked our system engineers to present the other two cores of the physical processor to the VM. The engineer immediately said that this would not improve performance at all, but would make the VM perform worse. That statement didn't make much sense to me, and I'm wondering how what the engineer said could be true. Are there actually cases where four cores presented to a VM would cause worse performance than two cores on the same physical hardware? Let's assume an ideal situation where there's only one VM on the host server, so nothing is being shared with other OS instances. I believe the physical server had a single quad core processor, and was most likely hosting multiple VMs. I don't really know what version of ESX was running on the host, nor do I know with certainty what the physical processor config was, but from within the VM I had access to, I saw two 3.33 GHz AMD processors. In the end, I never got to test the engineer's assertion out because (while we were trying to get the VM upgraded) we were able to optimize the process and reduce it's CPU consumption, and 2) we ended up migrating to a different VM on another ESX server which had four cores presented to it.

• What can cause two "identical" setups of IE8 and XP to display things differently?

  This has been baffling me for a while. Of the machines I use in visitting Stack Overflow, two of them are machines with the same setup: Dell with Windows XP with IE8. Since they were issued to me by the same company (one to use in the office, one to use at home), they have identical setups as well. But they display certain page elements differently! One is an Optiplex GX620 desktop, the other is an Inspiron 9100 laptop, but somehow the hardware doesn't seem like something that should be overriding how my browser displays things. Nevertheless, the laptop seems to display things differently than what is expected. Differences have included the following: This issue persisted on the laptop after Jeff fixed it, but was repaired for everyone else and on the Desktop. When viewing Vote Counts on a post, the grey line is left immediately beneath the upvotes but a number-sized white space is below that before the downvotes. On the desktop, it displays properly with the two adjacent and divided by a grey line. Code blocks seem to have a blank line at the end on the laptop. The following image illustrates how the last two elements look on the laptop. So, considering that as far as I can tell, these two setups are identical (I have not messed with any settings and they were both initialized identically as well), what else could be causing the display difference?

Those topics discuss only theoretically, but none of them gives even a single example demonstrating why reintepret_cast is really needed, and two static_cast would surely fail. I agree, one static_cast would fail. But how about two? • Cannot update, apt-get cannot fetch index files

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 from the iso 'ubuntu-11.10-desktop-amd64.iso'. I installed this in VMWare Fusion 4.1.1 running on OSX 10.7.3. When setting up the VM, I allowed easy install to take care of creating my user and installing VMWare tools. No problems during installation, everything seems to be working great. The problem is that apt-get will NOT update, so I can't do software updates or install any software with apt-get install. I have been searching high and low, and have found several threads covering similar issues. How to fix a ruined package catalog? is one, Update manager generates 404 error while attempting update. Will not update is another, Ubuntu 11.10 Update issue (failed to fetch...) is a third I have tried changing my software source download location to "Main Server" rather than "Server for United States", to no avail. Same errors. Tried sudo apt-get clean, sudo apt-get autoclean, Have done a sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*, still having the exact same problem. As I said, this is a brand new installation as of yesterday evening. In early October, tens of thousands of attendees will descend on the streets of San Francisco because they share one thing in common: the desire to learn more about Oracle. You might think that’s the way we, Oracle employees, look at this event—as just another opportunity for attendees to learn about what we do. But it’s really a two way street. Every year I’m amazed by how informed and inspired I am by our customers and their companies. Midsize companies buy Oracle to grow. As part of the Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies team I get to talk with our partners and business leaders at growing companies almost every day, usually via phone. Oracle OpenWorld presents the perfect opportunity to meet some of them in person, in an informal setting, and in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The stories our customers tell me about their businesses provide vivid examples of how they have overcome the challenges of managing increasingly complex global operations and growing during uncertain economic conditions. It’s no secret that my favorite session at Oracle OpenWorld (besides Larry Ellison’s keynotes and the Customer Appreciation Event, of course) is the Oracle Accelerate Customer Panel. This year we’re featuring executives from three companies who deployed Oracle ERP rapidly to support their company’s growth: Chris Powell, VP and Corporate Controller of Beats by Dr. Dre, a California based designer and manufacturer of premium headphones (sorry, no free samples), Iñaki Zuazo, CIO of Industrias Juno, a building materials provider based in Spain, Kamran Moosa, Project Coordinator for Spartan Engineering, a provider of engineering and construction support services for an LPG storage project in Texas, and That’s a pretty diverse lineup and it will be interesting to hear the perspectives of both IT and financial project stakeholders. The session, “Oracle Accelerate Customer Case Studies: Rapid Deployment of Oracle Applications”, is at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, October 3, in the Concert room at the Palace Hotel. Oracle loves our hometown of San Francisco and it’s a great place to host Oracle OpenWorld.
