• Hybrid Graphics on Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot

  Alright, so here's the situation: I am using an ASUS UL80VT with two graphics cards: Integrated intel graphics and NVIDIA G210M I was running an Ubuntu 12.04 - Windows 7 dual boot (on separate partitions).The machine worked perfectly (including the display drivers) without me needing to install anything special or change any settings. However, my hard drive was corrupted and I lost all my data yesterday, so after it was replaced, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64x again after installing Windows 7. I booted up Ubuntu after installation, and noticed it was by default using Unity 2D... Gnome 3.4 wasn't working properly either, so I guessed that the NVIDIA G210M driver wasn't installed/working and the OS was instead using the integrated graphics. I checked the "Additional Drivers" thing, but there were no proprietary drivers listed there, so I went to the NVIDIA website, downloaded the driver directly and installed it. I restarted, but there was no change. After this, I read somewhere that I should change my SATA in the BIOS to "Compatible" rather than "Enhanced". This worked fine and fixed the problem (both Unity and Gnome were working perfectly) but then when I tried booting up Windows 7, I recieved the BSOD. So I changed it back to Enhanced, and once again, the NVIDIA 210M graphics isn't working on Ubuntu, but on Windows 7 it is. I do not want to keep changing from Enhanced to Compatible every time I reboot to Ubuntu and neither do I want to simply just use one OS. Note that NVIDIA 210M and integrated graphics work perfectly on Windows 7. Also, I don't care about switching between them, I just want to be able to use the NVIDIA one. What can I do so that both Windows 7 and Ubuntu work and NVIDIA G210M works on Ubuntu?

• Distinction between API and frontend-backend

  I'm trying to write a "standard" business web site. By "standard", I mean this site runs the usual HTML5, CSS and Javascript for the front-end, a back-end (to process stuff), and runs MySQL for the database. It's a basic CRUD site: the front-end just makes pretty whatever the database has in store; the backend writes to the database whatever the user enters and does some processing. Just like most sites out there. In creating my Github repositories to begin coding, I've realized I don't understand the distinction between the front-end back-end, and the API. Another way of phrasing my question is: where does the API come into this picture? I'm going to list some more details and then questions I have - hopefully this gives you guys a better idea of what my actual question is, because I'm so confused that I don't know the specific question to ask. Some more details: I'd like to try the Model-View-Controller pattern. I don't know if this changes the question/answer. The API will be RESTful I'd like my back-end to use my own API instead of allowing the back-end to cheat and call special queries. I think this style is more consistent. My questions: Does the front-end call the back-end which calls the API? Or does the front-end just call the API instead of calling the back-end? Does the back-end just execute an API and the API returns control to the back-end (where the back-end acts as the ultimate controller, delegating tasks)? Long and detailed answers explaining the role of the API alongside the front-end back-end are encouraged. If the answer depends on the model of programming (models other than the Model-View-Controller pattern), please describe these other ways of thinking of the API. Thanks. I'm very confused.

• Is Movable Type among the most secure PHP blogs? How secure are the various PHP blog applications?

  Basically I'm trying to find a blog for a website, and security is the highest priority in our case. We don't need any features that I would imagine are special. Wordpress was our first idea, but its reputation precedes it, and though it may have cleaned up its act lately, I'm not seeing much solid evidence. I get the impression that Movable Type (at least the Perl version) has a much better reputation for security than Wordpress (historically at least). I'm not sure I want to take a chance with Wordpress at this point, but is there some objective source I can got to to back up (or counter) the notion that MT is at least among the best? Secunia doesn't recommend using their stats for comparisons, and securityfocus.com doesn't have stats at all that I can see. Searching here http://web.nvd.nist.gov makes MT look way better than WP (at least in 2007), but this site was referenced by MT's own page boasting about their security, so I don't know how relevant it is or how seriously people take it. Any suggestions on sites where I could/should make a somewhat objective comparison?

• Dot Matrix printers setup...

  Hello! I am using debian which is similar to ubuntu. They have 7 dot matrix printers some very old like this one http://www.omnidatasys.net/product/desc_printer_ti880.htm which works from 1979 daily and at text is faster than many inkjects. I believe that it has his own language... Sending text to serial port (port server) prints garbage. However i think is prints only capital english up to 95 asccii and greek and the rest up to 127 i think greek capital.(special chip ) Sending english capital letters prints garbage i think but i amnt sure... i will try again... The other printer are ESC/P compatible and i use generic epson driver provided from ghostscript... However i think that sending text via lp -dpr1 filename It prints the text as a grafic...Changing from printer font face(courier,times roman etc) or pitch has no effect... I am wondering if is there any work arround for this? In AIX they claim that lp command printed output as text as it prints and cobol programs send raw text to to lp printers . However in AIX they use some custom filters for the printers and has more options for dot matrix printers.. I would like to know if there is a solution for this.. To avoid graphics mode for text and change font face somehow.. The most Straight-through approach would be to use no driver ,just send ESC/P from cobol but this requires too much work... • Seeking .htaccess help: Converting multiple subdomains (both HTTP and HTTPS) to www.domain.com using .htaccess

  I've been trying to get an answer to this question on other forums (the folks at SuperUser thought this was the place I needed to post) and via my connections, but I haven't gotten very far. Hopefully you guys can help me find an answer. I've got a dozen old subdomains that have been indexed by Google. These have been indexed as both HTTP AND HTTPS. I've managed to redirect all the subdomains properly, provided they are not HTTPS, but can't get any of the HTTPS subdomains to property redirect. Here's the code I'm using: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain1.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain2.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain3.mysite.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L] This works great until someone goes to: https://subdomain2.mysite.com$ which is not redirected back to http://www.mysite.com$ How can I get this to work? Additionally, I'm guessing there is an easier way to make it happen than setting up a dozen pairs of RewriteCond/RewriteRule? Is there any way to do this in just a few lines, including one where I list all the subdomains? I'd actually also like to redirect everything on https://www.mysite.com$ to http://www.mysite.com$ except for 3 folders. These are mysite.com/secure, mysite.com/store, mysite.com/user. Is there any good way to add this to the .htaccess file?

• how do I make my Dualshock 3 gamepad work in Ubuntu 14.04?

  When my desktop computer was running Ubuntu 12.04, my PS3 controllers would work with USB. I didn't need to do any special setup. I could just plug it in before I start SuperTuxKart and it would recognize it. I can also do this on my laptop (still running 12.04). Since I gave my desktop a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04, the controller would never work. I have played with some installed software that I found when looking for information. • Crawling a Content Folio

  Content Folios in WebCenter Content allow you to assemble, track, and access a logical group of documents and/or links.  It allows you to manage them as just a list of items (simple folio) or organized as a hierarchy (advanced folio).  The built-in UI in content server allows you to work with these folios, but publishing them or consuming them externally can be a bit of a challenge.   The folios themselves are actually XML files that contain the structure, attributes, and pointers to the content items.  So to publish this somewhere, such as a Site Studio page, you could perhaps use an XML parser to traverse the structure and create your output.  But XML parsers are not always the easiest or most efficient to use.  In order to more easily crawl and consume a Content Folio, Ed Bryant - Principal Sales Consultant, wrote a component to do just that.  His component adds a service which does all the work for you and returns the folio structure as a simple resultset.  So consuming and publishing that folio on a Site Studio page or in your portal using RIDC is a breeze!  For example, let's take an advanced Content Folio example like this: If we look at the native file, the XML looks like this: But if we access the folio using the new service - http://server/cs/idcplg?IdcService=FOLIO_CRAWL&dDocName=ecm008003&IsPageDebug=1 - this is what the result set looks like (using the IsPageDebug parameter). Given this as the result set, it makes it very easy to consume and repurpose that folio. You can download a copy of the sample component here. • Malaysian Airlines bans kids under 12, creates separate cabins in basement of flight

  Kids are lot of fun to watch and play as long as they don’t start crying. Once they start crying it’s tough job for parents to calm them down and for people around it’s painful to be part of it. If it happens to be on a flight, it’s a biggest annoyance one can ever experience. Especially on long journey over night flights, it’s a nightmare for passengers if couple of kids are uncontrollable. After receiving many complaints from its passengers who are disturbed by kids in flight, Malaysian Airlines decided to ban kids under 12 in their regular Economy class cabins of new Airbus A380s. Parents with under 12 years old kids are allowed only in to special kids zone created in the basement of  the multi-storied jumbo flights Airbus A380s. May be parents with under 12 kids does not appreciate this move, but the rest of travellers would be happy. Back in June 2011 Malaysian Airlines banned infants in first class of its Boeing 747-400 jets. The CEO of Malaysian Airlines defended on twitter about the decision as first classers spend pricy amount for a comfortable journey.  So if you are a parent of kids  under 12, think twice before you book tickets on Malaysian Airlines. • What web technology could I use which would support a decision tree?

  I am a big game development fan but I haven't done any commercial work in the past. I have been asked by a non-profit to look at developing a game similar to the award-winning www.playspent.org They want the following features: support 5 scenarios mobile isn't important but compatibility with older browsers would be a big bonus they want it to be visual and audible bonus is to have it easily modifiable support 4 languages I don't have much knowledge of Flash and would rather avoid using it as a solution. I started breaking down the problem into segments that I will need to examine, they are as follows: ability to read the game flow from a file that they can produce (xml, etc.) db design to store decision tree language challenge browser compatibility I am leaning towards an Google app engine/GWT solution but I am not sure what technology is best for this. I am really hoping to get your opinion/recommendation on my approach and on what technology is best. A special thanks (and beer if you live in Toronto) will be awarded to anyone who can help give me a ballpark estimate on how much such a game should go for. • how do I write a functional spec quickly and efficiently

  So I just read some fabulous articles by Joel on specs here. (Was written in 2000!!) I read all 4 parts, but Im looking for some methodical approaches to writing my specs. Im the only lonely dev, working on this fairly complicated app (or family of apps) for a very well known finance company. I've never made something this serious, I started out writing something like a bad spec, an overview of some sorts, and it has wasted a LOT of my time. Ive also made 3 mockup-kinda-thingies for my client so I have a good understanding of what they want. Also released a preview (a throw away working app with the most basic workflow), and Ive only written and tested some of the very core/base systems. I think the mistake Ive been making so far is not writing a detailed spec, so Im getting to it now. So the whole thing comprises of An MVC website (for admins & data viewing) 2 Silverlight modules (For 2 specific tasks) 1 Desktop Application Im totally short on time, resources and need to get this done quick, also, need to make sure these guys read it up equally quick and painlessly. So how do I go about it, Im looking for any tips, any real world stuff, how do you guys usually do it? Do you make a mock screenie of every dialog/form/page? Im thinking of making a dummy asp.net web forms project, then filling in html files in folders and making it look like my mvc url structure. Then having a section in the spec for the website and write up a page for every URL Ive got with a screenie. For my win forms app, Ive made somewhat of a demo Win Form project, would I then put in a dialog or stucture everything as I would in the real app and then screen shot it?

• IIS cache control header settings

  I'm currently working on a website that is accessed over https. We have recently come across a problem where we are unable to view .pdf files or any other type of file that is sent as an attachment (Content-Disposition:attachment). According to Microsoft Knowledge Base this is due to the fact that Cache-Control is set to no-cache. However, we have a requirement that all pages be fully reloaded every time they are visited, so we have disabled caching on all pages (through our ASP code, not through IIS settings). However, I have made a special case of this one page that shows the attachment, and it now returns a header with Cache-Control:private and the expiry set to 1 minute in the future. This works fine when I test it on my local machine, using https. However, when I deploy it to our test server and try it, the response headers still return Cache-Control:no-cache. There is no firewall or anything between me and the server, so IIS itself must be adding these headers and replacing mine. I have no idea why it would do this, and it doesn't really make any sense, but it seems to be the only option at the moment (I haven't yet found any other place in the code that will change the cache headers). Can anyone point me to a possible place where IIS might be setting these header values?

• samba share not on network after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04LTS.

  I just upgraded an old Ubuntu box to 12.04LTS (machine named A-Ubuntu). This is an upgrade not a format re-install. All the accounts and config were preserved. The basic setup is a local network with 2 Ubuntu machines (let say A-Ubuntu, B-Ubuntu) and a MAC (C-MAC). Before the upgrade, all of them could see each other by their names not only the IP address. The local network has a D-Link Router where everybody is connected with RJ-45 wired etherenet (not wi-fi). Since the A-Ubuntu upgrade, we can't see this machine name on the Network and its name is not on machine list in the D-Link router anymore. We can see it's IP address only. I can't access A-Ubuntu from the other two by its name but I can ping it with its address (192.168.0.109). From A-Ubuntu, I can connect and see the shared samba folders on B-Ubuntu and C-MAC. But from B-Ubuntu and C-MAc, I can't connect to A-Ubuntu. Correct me if I'm wrong but this tells me that Samba should be fine and the real problem is that A-Ubuntu does not advertise its name on the Network so the D-Link does not have it in its table so nobody else finds it. After a lot of googling, I see that it is the job of avahi and mdns to do so. Those packages are running, I checked multiple config files for samba, avahi, mdns to see as if it is like the examples on the WEB and also similar to what I find on the working B-Ubuntu machine. This is the same. I did multiple service restart with samba, avahi, remove the firewall to make sure it does not block the hostname broadcast. I rebooted multiple time to make sure the update I was making were effective. Still, Can't see the A-Ubuntu name on the network. Any idea what it can be?, Where to look next?

• What is the best way to "carve" a terrain created from a heightmap?

  I have a 3d landscape created from a heightmap. I'd like to "carve" some holes in that terrain. That will allow me to create bridges, caverns and tunnels inside it. That operation will be done in the game editor so it doesn't need to be realtime. In the end, rendering is done using traditional polygons. What would be the best/easiest way to do that ? I already think about several solutions : Solution 1 1) Create voxels from the heightmap (very easy). In other words, fill a 3D array like this : voxels[32][32][32] from the heightmap values. 2) Carve holes in the voxels as i want (easy too). 3) Convert voxels to polygons using some iso-surface extraction technique (like marching cubes). 4) Reduce (decimate) polygons created in 3). This technique seems to be the most promising for giving good results (untested). However the problem with marching cubes is that they tends to produce lots of polygons thus reducing them is mandatory. Implementing 4) also seems not trivial, i have read several papers on the web and it seems pretty complex. I was also unable to find an example, code snippet or something to start writing an algorithm for triangle mesh decimation. Maybe there is a special decimation algorithm (simpler) for meshes created from marching cubes ? Solution 2 1) Create some triangle mesh from the heighmap (easy). 2) Apply severals 3D boolean operation (eg: subtraction with a sphere) to carve the mesh. 3) apply some procedure to reduce polygons (optional). Operation 2) seems to be very complex and to be honest i have no idea how to do that. Also applying many boolean operation seems to be slow and will maybe degrade the triangle mesh every time a boolean operation is applied.

• Why is sudo bash different from regular bash

  Problem description : I am using something called play framework in my development which requires me to make the python script play available in the path. Hence I create a symbolic link in /usr/local/bin ... Now I have written a shell script (call it status.sh) which calls this python script as follows : play status <some values here related to my app> &> /tmp/xyz.txt and this shell script then sends me the file via email. This works perfectly when I execute the script as follows ./script.sh. However when the script is executed as a cron expression everyday I get an output from stderr saying 'play: command not found'. Hence I did some digging on my own and here are my findings : echo $PATH when I am on the shell shows that I have /usr/local/bin available to me hence I can successfully execute the command play status however when I type in sudo bash and then echo $PATH I do not have the path /usr/local/bin anymore. It is a limited set of folders (one of them being /usr/bin). Q : Why this behavior ?! I fail to understand why the path is different. Also as a workaround would you suggest I do : new symbolic link from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin (what are the side effects of this?) remove /usr/local/bin sym link altogether and only use /usr/bin is there a convention that I am not following here for linking new programs and executing them from $PATH ?
