• How relevant is PHP today for browser games?

  I was the lead developer of 2 moderately successful browser games quite a few years back, and plan on working on a new game soon. At the time, I wrote them in pure PHP (no template engine or anything of the sort). I'd like to start working on a new game, but have been out of the web development world for a while. Reading around, I hear a lot of good about Rails, Django, Node.js, etc., with which I have no experience (although I know my way around Python, Javascript, and the others quite well). So my question is the following- if I were to go in my old ways and go with PHP again, would I be making things hard for myself? Would picking something more "trendy" have a real impact on my development? In addition, does anyone have any pointers relating to specifically developing browser games with these more modern tools?

• Creating a Corporate Data Hub

  The Windows Azure Marketplace has a rich assortment of data and software offerings for you to use – a type of Software as a Service (SaaS) for IT workers, not necessarily for end-users. Among those offerings is the “Data Hub” – a  codename for a project that ironically actually does what the codename says. In many of our organizations, we have multiple data quality issues. Finding data is one problem, but finding it just once is often a bigger problem. Lots of departments and even individuals have stored the same data more than once, and in some cases, made changes to one of the copies. It’s difficult to know which location or version of the data is authoritative. Then there’s the problem of accessing the data. It’s fairly straightforward to publish a database, share or other location internally to store the data. But then you have to figure out who owns it, how it is controlled, and pass out the various connection strings to those who want to use it. And then you need to figure out how to let folks access the internal data externally – bringing up all kinds of security issues. Finally, in many cases our user community wants us to combine data from the internally sources with external data, bringing up the security, strings, and exploration features up all over again. Enter the Data Hub. This is an online offering, where you assign an administrator and data stewards. You import the data into the service, and it’s available to you - and only you and your organization if you wish. The basic steps for this service are to set up the portal for your company, assign administrators and permissions, and then you assign data areas and import data into them. From there you make them discoverable, and then you have multiple options that you or your users can access that data. You’re then able, if you wish, to combine that data with other data in one location. So how does all that work? What about security? Is it really that easy? And can you really move the data definition off to the Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) that know the particular data stack better than the IT team does? Well, nothing good is easy – but using the Data Hub is actually pretty simple. I’ll give you a link in a moment where you can sign up and try this yourself. Once you sign up, you assign an administrator. From there you’ll create data areas, and then use a simple interface to bring the data in. All of this is done in a portal interface – nothing to install, configure, update or manage. After the data is entered in, and you’ve assigned meta-data to describe it, your users have multiple options to access it. They can simply use the portal – which actually has powerful visualizations you can use on any platform, even mobile phones or tablets.     Your users can also hit the data with Excel – which gives them ultimate flexibility for display, all while using an authoritative, single reference for the data. Since the service is online, they can do this wherever they are – given the proper authentication and permissions. • Drop in service for account management, authentication, identity?

  I'm building an Android app and associated set of web services for uploading/downloading data. I need a basic (no frills) solution for account management (register, login, logout, verify credentials/token). What open source / third party solutions exist for this scenario? I need: create a new account db based on a salt simple web service to create a new account simple web service to authenticate supplied credentials and return some sort of token That's it, I can get by without 'fancy' email activation or password reset for the time being. Are there off-the-shelf components for this? Should I just use a 'blank' django or rails app to get this done? Seems crazy for everyone to be doing CREATE TABLE user_accounts ... Thoughts? • What to choose for beginner: PHP/Python/Ruby

  I'm a beginner teaching myself to code but I would like he insight of the PSE community and helping choose where to start. My main objective is to be able to create a basic website to first test my business idea and from there iterate on it quickly to minimise my learning time. The most important criteria for me is speed. An example of speed would be pre-built components available open source and not having to write one from scratch. From my research, this seems to be a death match between the following languages and frameworks: PHP and CakePHP Python and Django Ruby and Rails Assumptions: I am going to be equally good (or bad) in all 3. It is going to be equally easy to find competent developers in either language. I know this to be false already by lets assume that it is. This question is not meant to karma whore as I've seen how passionate some of these standoff questions have been and I'll be happy to turn it into a community wiki.

• What is a *slightly* less extreme equivalent to being "fluent" in a language?

  tl;dr: What is a less extreme (but still noticeable) alternative to the word "fluent", when saying e.g. "I am fluent in C++/Python/whatever?" I think I can call myself "fluent" in C#, because I know the language and runtime very well, and I'm very familiar with the .NET framework's APIs and classes, etc. I would like to claim the same thing for Python and C++. But while I can program in Python (I did so for an entire summer, making a website with Django), for example, I would not call myself fluent because my code isn't always "Pythonic" (e.g. using map/filter vs. list comprehensions), and I'm not too intimate with some aspects of the language and standard library yet (e.g. the introspection API, etc.). Is there a word or phrase I can use on e.g. a resume to describe what I know? I can think of "very familiar with", but is there a better word/phrase I can use?

• How can I disable the prefetch cache?

  I run a few Ubuntu servers that have a load of django sites running on them. The sites and the httpd start at boot and after that (apart from me SSHing in to update it or using bzr to update websites) nothing else gets run on it. At the moment over half the ram is allocated as cache. This isn't a problem because cache usually makes space or a little bit of it slips into swap (again, this doesn't really bother me) but I don't see the need for it. Is there a quick way to disable the cache? This is more of an experiment than anything else so it would be handy to know how to turn it back on again.

• Does using a PHP framework count as experience using PHP to a company that doesn't use that framework?

  I've started working at a company that uses the Yii PHP framework. I'm mostly using Yii but also some frontend stuff like jQuery and Ajax. What I'm worried about is limiting my skill set to a framework that isn't very popular. I mean, if the company I worked for was using Ruby on Rails or even Django, I wouldn't have this feeling of concern for the future. My first question is then, in regards to being able to find a job in the future somewhere else, is my feeling of concern warranted? Secondly, I see a lot of PHP jobs out there but do you think experience using a PHP framework counts as valuable experience to a company that doesn't use that particular framework or any framework at all?

• Most Useful New Technology?

  I'm looking to take a sort of sabbatical, and I'd love to use it to learn a new technology. My question is this: What's the most useful "new" technology for a software engineer to use? Node.js, iOS programming, Android, something else? I'd prefer to stay away from anything too new or experimental, since those are, in my experience, rarely actually used in professional production environments (for better or worse). Does anyone happen to have stats on how many jobs there are for each new technology or have anecdotes about how fun each one is? I've been using python/Django, so that's out, and it's similar to Ruby so i don't think learning Ruby would be that useful to expanding my skills. Anyone have any other ideas?

• Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Server?

  Hello everyone. I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first distribution. I have chosen Ubuntu because I want to learn more about Linux. I'm under time constraints and need to setup a server as soon as possible. I have Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server setup via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro. I installed everything I need on the server edition, but it feels way over my head. I have no experience with CLI. Can I just use Ubuntu Desktop to run my Web server for the time being while I learn CLI? I basically need to run Apache, PHP, MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Python and Django. Should I be using MAMP? Thanks.

• Why should I use a web framework's template language over python's templating options?

  I'm coming from a python CGI background and was wanting to move into something more contemporary and think I have decided upon web.py as the framework I would like to use. In regards to templating, previously I used formatted strings and the string.Template module to effect most of my templating needs. After reading through a few of the templating options I have heard mentioned, I began wondering what the main benefits of using something like the Django or jinja templating options over "native" Python templating options were? Am I just going to be replacing $tmpl_var with {{ tmpl_var }} and s.substitute(tmpl_var=value) with t.render(s), i.e., alternate syntax? or will I gain additional advantages from using these templating systems?

• Web programming, standard way to deal with a response that takes time to complete

  With normal form submission I use the pattern Post / Redirect / Get, when processing the forms. I have a database application built with Django. I want to allow the users to select a number of items from the database, then launch a computationally intensive task based on those items. I expect the task to take between 10 minutes and 2 hours to complete. Is there a standard approach to dealing with requests like this (i.e. that don't return immediately)? Ideally there would be some way to display the progress.

• How easy is it to change languages/frameworks professionally? [closed]

  Forgive me for asking a career related question - I know that they can be frowned upon here, but I think that this one is general enough to be useful to many people. My question is: How easy/difficult is it to get a job using language/frameowork B, when your current job uses language/framework A? e.g. If you use C#/ASP.NET in your current job, how difficult would it be to get a job using python/django, or PHP/Zend, or whatever (the specifics of the example don't matter). Relatedly, if you work in client side scripting, but perhaps work on server-side projects in your own time, how difficult would it be to switch to server-side professionally? So, to sum up, does the choice of which languages/frameworks use at work tend to box you in professionally?

I've checked a couple of times that the application is running in Full trust. • Using the public ssh key from local machine to access two remote users [closed]

  I have an new Ubuntu (Hardy 8.04) server; it has two users, Alice and Bob. Alice is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key (my local machine's public key local/Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) to authorized_keys in remote_server/home/Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on Alice/.ssh/ to 700 and Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600, and both the file and folder are owned my Alice. Then added I Alice to sshd_config (AllowUsers Alice). • Understanding LinkDemand Security on a webserver

  Hi, After deployment an ASP.Net application on a webserver, I get this error message by using code from a external assembly: "LinkDemand The type of the first permission that failed was: System.Security.PermissionSet The Zone of the assembly that failed was: MyComputer the error ". The assembly is include in the \bin folder and not in the GAC. I try to know what linkdemand exactly is and why this message will raised. But looking for more information, I don't get exactly the problem. I try also to add the PermissionSetAttribute on the class where the exception message happens: [System.Security.Permissions.PermissionSetAttribute(System.Security.Permissions.SecurityAction.LinkDemand, Name = "FullTrust")] Then the exception will be raised on another class of the assembly. And so on.. My questions ares: - what exactly is going wrong here? Is it true that I understand that .Net cannot check the code during Jit? - Is there maybe a security policy that block this (machine.config)? - Can I set the PermissionAttribute for all classes between a assembly?   I have an new ubuntu (hardy 8.04) server, it has two users, User1 and User2. User1 is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key (my local machine's public key local/Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) to authorized_keys in remote_server/home/user1/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on user1/.ssh/ to 700 and user1/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600 and both file and folder are owned my User1. Then added I User1 to sshd_config (AllowUsers User1). • How to deploy a WPF 4 Full Trust XBAP an on intranet?

  I'm having trouble running a full trust WPF 4 XBAP (browser application), created with Visual Studio 2010, from my intranet. I do not get a ClickOnce elevation prompt, as described in ScottGu's post on WPF 4: Full Trust XBAP Deployment Starting in WPF 4, the ClickOnce elevation prompt is also enabled for XAML Browser Applications (XBAPs) in Intranet and Trusted Zones, making it easier to deploy full-trust XBAPs. For XBAPs that require security permissions greater than the minimum code access security (CAS) permission grantset of the Intranet and Trusted Zones, the user will be able to click 'Run' on the ClickOnce elevation prompt when they navigate to the XBAP to allow the XBAP to run with the requested permissions. Instead, I get the "Trust Not Granted" message. I'm running the application in two ways; in both cases, I get the "Trust Not Granted" message. First, I'm launching the application by double-clicking on the xbap file from my NAS on the local network. Secondly, I'm also trying to launch the application when it is hosted on a website via IIS from the same machine. Are both of these scenarios considered to be run from an "intranet?" Or does "intranet" mean some in particular here? Or am I doing something completely wrong? Of note, I am able to launch the application without problem when I simply double-click the xbap from my local computer. The xbap in question was created specifically to test the ClickOnce elevation prompt. It was created with Visual Studio 2010 as a WPF Browser Application. The only change I made was to change this to a full trust application (My Project Security tab This is a full trust application). In the publish wizard, I am choosing the following: Where do you want to publish the application? - I chose to publish to a local directory How will user install the application? - I chose "From a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM" Will the application be available offline - All choices were grayed out
