  I am trying to use EC2 tools to get all the machines with a particular tag in some type of array in /config/deploy/prod.rb file in Capistrano. • IIS returning plain Forbidden response. No HTTP code

  I'm running a ServiceStack application on IIS. My regular services work fine and have not had any problems with permissions. My new project involves providing generated pdfs. I gave IIS_IUSRS read/write permissions to the Temp directory under my app directory. I also allow non SSL connections to this directory. When I browse to the file which ServiceStack is supposed to automatically serve up (eg. http://ryu.com/Temp/201310171723337631.pdf ) I get this: Forbidden Request.HttpMethod: GET Request.PathInfo: Request.QueryString: Request.RawUrl: /ryu/Temp/201310171723337631.pdf App.IsIntegratedPipeline: True App.WebHostPhysicalPath: C:\inetpub\ryu App.WebHostRootFileNames: [global.asax,global.asax.cs,web.config,bin,temp] Now this doesn't look like a ServiceStack error message, more like IIS, but I'm not certain as to how to get to the bottom of this. Authorization settings are Allow All.

• Error code 2503 - Cannot install software on Windows 7 (64Bit)

  A short while ago, I had my hard drive die on me and at the same time my 1Tb backup drive! I took it back to the guy I bought the PC from and although the backup drive could not be recovered, he managed to get my machine working again by making a minor change in the BIOS which then got it out of that continuous loop it found itself in after multiple BSOD episodes. Everything seems to be working fine but yesterday when I tried to save something from Google Chrome, I got and insufficient permission problem and when I try to install software, I get an error of 2503. I have already followed the suggestions here but none of this worked for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. EDIT: This started happening after I tried running a number of tests to get the machine working, including a previous restore point.

• Nginx return 444 depending on upstream response code

  I have nginx setup to pass to an upstream using proxy pass. The upstream is written to return a 502 http response on certain requests, rather then returning the 502 with all the header I would like nginx to recoginse this and return 444 so nothing is returned. Is this possible? • Java Error Code 2753 Regutils.dll

  Hello, I'm trying to install Java's JRE, however I'm running into problems. Recently the JRE was uninstalled on this computer, and when I try to reinstall I get this error 2753. I've looked online and the best page I've found to try and help is this one: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=182720 Which says to uninstall Java using Revo or Windows Cleanup. However nether program says I have Java installed. From what I've read this is a uninstall problem when Java is not really uninstalled. How do I make sure Java is completely uninstalled? Do you have any other suggestions for me to try?

• Apache 406 error with JPEGCam

  We have recently migrated our website to a new server, and JPEGCam is now reporting a 406 (Not Acceptable) error when trying to upload the image from the SWF to the server. I know that it isn't supported any more by the developer, but I wondered if anyone has encountered this problem before. I suspected the issue was with the Mod_Security module in Apache (i.e. not whitelisting Shockwave Flash), but the server admins have also drawn a blank. The request is being sent as a POST method, and returns a 406 error, but according to the Apache logs, it is returning a 404 error. I wondered if anyone has encountered this problem before, or knows of a 'simple' fix. Everything was working on our Xampp flavour dev server, so I am 100% certain this is an Apache issue. Also, when trying to access the requested page directly in the web browser, everything gets served up without a problem...

  I have a problem. I try to display a UITable that could have 2000-20000 records (typicall numbers.) I have a SQLite database similar to the Apple contacts application. I do all the tricks I know to get a smoth scroll, but I have a problem. I load the data in 50 recods blocks. Then, when the user scroll, request next 50 until finish the list. However, load that 50 records cause a notable "pause" in loading and scrolling. Everything else works fine. I cache the data, have opaque cells, draw it by code, etc... I swap the code loading the same data in dicts and have a performance boost but wonder if I could keep my object oriented aproach and improve the actual code.   Please read before answering. This is a fantasy programming technique I'm dreaming up. I want to know if there's anything close in real life. Is there anything in real life that comes close? If not, is it possible to define customized keywords in Java or JSP? Or do I have to create an entirely new programming language for that? What problems do you see with this kind of setup? PS: I know you can use HTML libraries to construct HTML using Java code, but the problem with such libraries is, the source code itself doesn't have a readable HTML representation like the code above does - if you get what I mean.

  So I have written some code to experiment with threads and do some testing. The code should create some numbers and then find the mean of those numbers. I think it is just easier to show you what I have so far. I was expecting with two threads that the code would run about 2 times as fast. • New line (in the code) after <li> element breaking layout

  Weirdly, I've never come across this issue before, but I've just started making a site and the top navigation isn't playing nicely. I want a small amount of white space between each menu item, but when I have new lines between my <li> elements and my <a> elements in my IDE (Netbeans), the white space disappears, yet it looks fine if I have <li><a></a></li> all on the same line. I was always under the impression html ignored white space in the code. I've checked for any weird characters causing problems in other text editors and can't find anything. Here's the code... • Filtering GridViewComboBoxColumn in RadGridView for WPF

  The GridViewComboBox column is used to display lookup data in user friendly manner. For our demo we bind RadGridView for WPF to a collection of custom Location objects. As you may notice – each location has a selectable Country field.  Here is the underlying ‘data model’: public class Location {  public int CountryID { get; set; }  public string CityName { get; set; } } public class Country {  public int ID { get; set; }  public string Name { get; set; } }   The location object contains the integer CountryID. Each CountryID corresponds to a certain country and with the help of GridViewComboBoxColumn we see some human readable country names instead of the underlying numeric IDs. • Reasons NOT to open source not-for-profit code?

  I am a big fan of open source code. I think I understand most of the advantages of going open source. I'm a science student researcher, and I have to work with quite a surprising amount of software and code that is not open source (either it's proprietary, or it's not public). I can't really see a good reason for this, and I can see that the code, and people using it, would definitely benefit from being more public (if nothing else, in science it's vital that your results can be replicated if necessary, and that's much harder if others don't have access to your code). Before I go out and start proselytising, I want to know: are there any good arguments for not releasing not-for-profit code publicly, and with an OSI-compliant license? (I realise there are a few similar questions on SE, but most focus on situations where the code is primarily used for making money, and I couldn't much relevant in the answers.) Clarification: By "not-for-profit", I am including downstream profit motives, such as parent-company brand-recognition and investor profit expectations. In other words, the question relates only to software for which there is NO profit motive tied to the software what so ever.

• Have unit test generators helped you when working with legacy code?

  I am looking at a small (~70kLOC including generated) C# (.NET 4.0, some Silverlight) code-base that has very low test coverage. The code itself works in that it has passed user acceptance testing, but it is brittle and in some areas not very well factored. I would like to add solid unit test coverage around the legacy code using the usual suspects (NMock, NUnit, StatLight for the Silverlight bits). My normal approach is to start working through the project, unit testing & refactoring, until I am satisfied with the state of the code. I've done this many times in the past, and it's worked well. However, this time I'm thinking of using a test generator (in particular Pex) to create the test framework, then manually fleshing it out. My question is: have you used unit test generators in the past when commencing work on a legacy codebase, and if so, would you recommend them? My fear is that the generated tests will miss the semantic nuances of the code-base, leading to the dreaded situation of having tests for the sake of the coverage metric, rather than tests which clearly express the intended behaviour in code.
