Stop RAID 5 from Initializing

Hi, I am trying to follow Ictinike's guide on Recovering Intel RAID "Non-Member Disk" Error found here, Ictinike's RAID recovery Guide I have recreated my RAID array as per the instructions. However my RAID array status is then automatically set to: INITIALIZE When I boot back into my Windows XP desktop, the Intel Matrix Storage Utility begins to "Initialize" my drives. This is a long slow process that will take about 20 hours. I suspect all my data will be lost. I have gone back into my bios and disabled my RAID controller to prevent any further initialization and data loss. I have read that initialization will cause data loss. I've also read somewhere that it won't. I am not so confident in the latter. Is there anyway to stop this initialization process so I can continue to follow the steps in the recovery guide? Some general questions about Adobe fonts.

Questions: The Adobe fonts look distinctly clearer and much better than Arial. Any particular reason? Why does Adobe Caslon Pro show up among "C"s? (I know, Caslon starts with "C", but the font's name starts with "A", right?) Are more fonts like these available somewhere? (By "these", I mean non decorative, regular, and smooth) Why are there two versions of certain fonts like Adobe Heiti, which has: @Adobe Heiti and Adobe Heiti (which are not exactly the same, btw.) Is span monitoring on Cisco ASA 5520 possible?

From what I have read, you can use the switchport monitor command on ASA 5505's to setup a Span port due to the back of the ASA actually being a switch. On my 5520, I do not see the switchport command listed when issuing a ? via the CLI. How do people monitor traffic on non-5505's? My goal is to connect our IDS/IPS device that is running is promiscuous mode to a Ethernet port on the 5520 to monitor WAN traffic. I do not want to have to pass the WAN traffic through a switch as it would require me to get two (for redundancy) STP/switchport capable switches. How to create iso dvd image for use with Mac OS X's "Disk Utility"?

This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail: how to do this what the options mean e.g. format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non Mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard DVD as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'Terminal' (the whole point of buying a Mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!) Please, if you can just provide some simple instructions on what I need to achive this I'd be extremely grateful. Ta muchley in advance.

RAID10 without write-back cache = horrible write performance?

I have just provisioned a dedicated server on singlehop. I'm running it through some tests to know what to expect performance-wise. On the I/O side (with 4 1TB disks in RAID 10) I get: write-cache disabled 200 MB/s read throughput 30 MB/s write throughput I thought that was really low compared to my desktop HD which gets 150-150 or so. So I had a chat with them and they suggested enabling the write cache. New results: write-cache enabled 280 MB/s read 260 MB/s write which is great and all but means I'd have to add a BBU for an additional monthly cost. Is it normal for the write throughput to be 1/4 of a regular drive on RAID10, if you don't have write cache? It almost feels like its intentionally bad to force you to pony up for the BBU. I'd be happy with normal non-raid performance of 150/150.

After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)

Qmail/Plesk email help

Hay Guys. I'm using plesk with Qmail as an outgoing server. I've never used my plesk setup before to send emails. I usually use my ISP. I'm having a little trouble settng this up. I've created a simple email account, [email protected]. All is well, i setup my POP account in my mail client (apple mail) and i can receive mail. However i can't send any. These are the details im using smtp.mycrazydomain.com standard auth (i've tried SSL and non SSL) username: [email protected] password: mypassword However nothing has happened. Anyone got any ideas?

fsck: FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED after each check with -c, why?

Hi I use a script to partition and format CF cards (connected with a USB card writer) in an automated way. After the main process I check the card again with fsck. To check bad blocks I also tried the '-c' switch, but I always get a return value != 0 and the message "FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED" (see below). I get the same result when checking the very same drive several times... Does anyone know why a) the file system is modified at all and b) why this seems to happen every time I check and not only in case of an error (like bad blocks)? How can I connect a SAS drive to USB? [closed]

I have a Dell T710 with Seagate Cheetah 15k.7 SAS disks. If the T710 motherboard dies, I'll need to resort to one of my nightly off-site backups and salvage the journal/logfile from the SAS disk to bring the backup bang up-to-date. I need a way of reading the healthy-but-inaccessible SAS disc that does not depend on the only SAS-capable machine I have to hand. So I bought: SAS to SATA Adapter and: USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter with Power ...so that I could read the SAS drive via USB. I can plug it all together just fine. The chain looks like: USB - SATA - SAS. But the drive does not spin up and the computer doesn't even acknowledge anything being attached by USB. Is there a cheap external enclosure I can buy for SAS drives? I can't believe these USB to SATA adapters are everywhere but the USB to SAS adapters are almost non-existent...

I just received my new SQL Server from Dell. The server will be serve approximately 15 OLTP databases which average 10GB in size. Here are the basic specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 with up to 12 Hot Swap HDDs,LED Intel Xeon E5649 2.53GHz, 12M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, 6 core (Quantity of 2) 48GB Memory (6x8GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs for 2 Processors, Optimized PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 300GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 4) 600GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 6) My first thought was to use 3 arrays. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

Disabling file permissions on NFS share

I am trying to set up a nfs share for use by non-technical users, and really don't want file permissions messing things up. Everyone should be able to read/write anything on this share without even knowing what file permissions are, much less adjusting them. Is there a way I can just make the nfs server write everything as 770 or something? It seems like this should be easy, but the best I can come up with is a cronjob to periodically set them to that, which is far from ideal. The server is a Netgear ReadyNAS. Ideally I would like to stick to doing stuff from within the web interface on it, but I can just root it if needed.

Product Recommendation: Good job scheduler for windows servers?

Looking for a mostly-GUI tool that is low cost (less then $1k, but not required) and allows you to create scheduled tasks and jobs without writing vbscript, batch files, or powershell. Something simple that speaks SMB/CIFS, SMTP, LDAP, etc. for such things as "delete some files based on a list of folders from this text file" or "disable all users with expired accounts" or "delete all disabled users not in this AD group". I've seen some of the big multi-OS enterprise task automation systems and they just look way overkill. We're a windows-only shop, Server 2003 or newer and there's got to be a simple non-agent based product that is drag-n-drop for some of this basic automation. Today we use all three languages mentioned above, and the scripts are not as reliable as a workflow-based-tool would be. Thanks.

No hostnames insites-available. The problem still remains. Where does Windows 8 put the exe of the default browser for Modern UI?

I was trying to some hack with Win-8 and I found something which is really gonna out my mind. When I set the default browser to the IE then its icon become Modern UI and I can't see the option Open file location at the bottom when I select it by right click. But if I don't set it default then it became a desktop version icon and show up the option when I select it. Same is for the Google Chrome when I checked it. IE icon when it is not set to default, I can see the option open file location. Google Chrome icon when it is set to default. Google Chrome of desktop version when it is set to default. So my question is where does Modern UI keep exe of the default browser? And why the default browser has Modern UI icon and non-default browser has desktop version icon.

Online Backup strategy for family individuals

The majority of my family, including myself, uses Dropbox and Syncplicity free accounts for our syncing needs. However our backup strategy is pretty non-existent, we all have access (via webDav) to our qnap nas located at home, however we copy files accross when we can remember to do so, terrible I know. Is there tools like CrashPlan or Spideroak that allows each the accomodation of each family members syncing and back-up needs under one main account? I'm not sure how this would work, as each family member would need a seperate sub-account or would I manage each computer's syncing and backup lists from a single account? Any thoughts?

Rewrite URL based off of IP on OpenWRT

We are running OpenWRT on a WRT54GL. I have been looking for an answer to this, but I can't seem to figure out what to search for, if its possible, or what combination of programs to use. I want to be able to redirect a HTTP request from a WiFi device based off of their MAC address. This should all be transparent to the device. Basically we are trying to redirect any non-registered devices to a website to register the device (at this point, we would push a new config to the router that would allow this MAC address "full access"). Once a device is registered, it will be redirected to a transparent squid proxy server on another machine for caching/blocking certain sites. I looked at tinyproxy - popilo which redirects but I won't have the MAC address to know if its registered or not. Any help (google suggestions, programs, anything!) would be very much appreciated!

Ideas for home media server with Dell laptop?

Hi guys, We have an old Dell Inspiron laptop we don't use anymore and would look to turn it onto a media/backup server for music/pictures - and maybe documents/code. The laptop only has 40Gb of HD space but we can hook to it a USB external HD with an additional 80Gb. This is a very general question: - What OS should I put on it (more like, what flavor of Linux)? - What media/backup server software should I install on top of that? - How would you go about backing up to it? I need to back up computers on the same LAN, some have Windows, some OS X, some Linux. If you could point me to an all-in-one solution with a nice tutorial for non-sysadmin folks it would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!!

For example: $ file * file1.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz file2.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo file3.wav: Claris clip art? file4.wav: Audio file with ID3 version 2.2.0, contains: MPEG ADTS, layer III, v1, 160 kbps, 44.1 kHz, JntStereo And for good measure, a non-wav: file5.m4a: ISO Media, MPEG v4 system, iTunes AAC-LC I would like to convert all of these files to the format that file1.wav is: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz What is the proper set of arguments to pass to afconvert to make that happen?

How can I share a Windows 7 library with anonymous access without using a Homegroup?

The "homegroup" feature is useless, because it requires a password, and therefore doesn't support anonymous, no-hassle access to shares from devices such as my Sony Bravia TV and non-Windows7 machines. So I turned off homegroup and reverted to the standard shared folders protocol. I'd like to share my Music "Library", so I can play files from my TV through the Surround Sound System, but there seems to be no option to share a library folder other than through a homegroup. I don't want to have to individually share the folders that belong to the library, because that would defeat the purposes of the library, which is to manage which folders are included in the library while also providing an easily accessible view of them all at once. Does anyone know how to share a Windows 7 library without that useless homegroup feature?

Is there a tool or a trick to easily duplicate a windows profile? My problem is that I have a local user profile and I like to copy that for another user. Additionaly that profile was created locally when a domain-user logged in, and I like to create a copy of that profile for a non-domain-user. Hope it's clear what my problem is. Is there an easy way to read blu-rays on Windows?

Some time ago, I bought my parents a computer dedicated to medias (mostly photographs and movies trough DLNA). My father asked me if he could read blu-ray on it, so I bought a blu-ray reader but I can't find a software to do the playback. I installed PowerDVD (a free version we got with a Blu-Ray) but it seems it now requires a (non-free) upgrade. Even if it were free, I hardly see my parent do the upgrade by themselves as they barely understand how computers work. I thought I would find a free software (something like VLC, but for blu-rays) but so far had no luck. Do you guys have a software to suggest that would solve my issues ? It should run on Windows Vista, shouldn't require an update every monday, or at least a free one. Thank you very much.

How to open embedded Visio files with only Visio Viewer?

For some bizarre reason Visio Viewer seems incapable of opening vsd files when they're embedded within a (2010) Excel document: However if I open the Excel document with 7-zip, browse to xl\embeddings, extract oleObject1.bin and rename it to a .vsd file extension it opens perfectly fine with Visio Viewer in Internet Explorer. Since this opens fine on a computer with the full Visio installed, my guess is it's trying to launch Visio rather than IE. Is there something I can do to fix this? I've been scanning with Process Monitor and searching with RegScanner comparing a Visio-installed system to a VisioViewer-installed system and there doesn't actually seem to be any sort of registry value giving direction here... maybe it's just the nature of OLE. (If it can't be fixed I'm okay with converting the extracted one to a .png or so to replace the embedded object, but the "solutions" I've found for vsd to image conversion are very poor or non-working, i.e. buggy code, code with Visio dependencies, or online services.)

Processor always at max speed

I am running Windows 8 Pro on an Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 Mid 2012 15 inch non retina. It has a Core i7-3720 QM CPU @ 2.6 GHz. For the past few days, I have noticed that it is constantly running at max speed which is 2.59 GHz. Before, it used to run at 1.5 - 1.8 GHz on normal usage. And, the weirder thing is that CPU usage is minimal. Screenshot: So, what is the reason for this? And is it harmful?

How to install Win7 over top of WinXP partition?

I have a 2TB hard drive with 2 partitions on it, one a C drive for WinXP and another for extra space. I have a Win7 Pro install DVD and I have formatted that C drive via the DVD; it is now a blank "Primary" partition. I attempted to go through the Win7 setup and install it on that partition, but it's giving me an error: Setup unable to create new system partition or locate existing system partition. See setup log files for more info Googling around leads me to believe the entire drive has to be "cleaned" (diskpart) but that would wipe the entire other non-OS partition and I need to keep that data. How can I install Win7 on this blank partition without losing data on the other partition?
