• Visual Studio - how to create two projects using the same sources

  My solution consists of 2 executable projects and a couple dlls. Project1 is a Smart Device Project, Project2 is a Windows Forms Project. Both projects use the same libraries, the reason of that is I want to test my libraries on PC before I deploy it on the device. The problem is that the DLL project type can be Smart Device Class Library or Class Library, not both. I cannot add a reference from SD project to WF and vice versa. I was able to add reference from SD project to a dll file (generated from Class Library project) instead of the project itself, but for some reason I got the message "cannot load XXX type from YYY assembly". It doesn't depend on my code, because when I created separate project for the same sources, everything was fine. The only solution I've found is to create 2 types of projects for each library, but I don't know how to make 2 projects based on the same sources.

• Struggling with a loop

  Hey. I am trying to make an integer match another integer by adding a number to one of them. I have tried several loop types, but none has worked.   I have one class that declares an enumeration type as: public enum HOME_LOAN_TERMS {FIFTEEN_YEAR, THIRTY_YEAR}; Is this type usable in another class? I'm basically trying to complete a homework assignment where we have two types of loans, and one loanManager class. When I try to use the HOME_LOAN_TERMS.THIRTY_YEAR in my loanManager class that does not extend or implement the loan class, I get an error saying it 'cannot find symbol HOME_LOAN_TERMS.' So I did not know if my loanManager class needed to implement the two different loan classes. Thanks.

• Prevent mapping all public members of a class in Fluent NHibernate

  I have a class generated from a WSDL that has a bunch of public properties and a public event. I'm extending this class with my own and adding some properties to it. All of my own properties are declared virtual, but the base class properties are not virtual. I'm using Fluent NHibernate's ClassMap to map only the properties from my extended class. How do I prevent (Fluent)NHibernate from trying to persist all the base class's public members? • How do you create a Google Maps-esque drop down dialog?

  In the Google Maps application, when you open the menu and click on "Directions", it pops up a dialog that is unique to Google Maps. It keeps the MapView in the background, but displays the search dialog from the top (or bottom, if you're on an old version of Android). I was curious if anyone knew how they achieved this effect. I'm willing to create a custom Dialog, but it seems that Dialogs are designed to pop into the middle of the screen (any other types of dialogs are denied permission as system dialogs). What trick is Google Maps using?

The general idea is that we have 3 levels of security: a simple user - that can only access basic data that is in a data repository a manager - that can open up data repositories a superuser - that can open up repository factories. each repository contains various data types(text, images, etc etc). We are looking for authentication methods that will allow us: 1. Scalability. 2. Customization. 3. To create permissions that will effect the GUI + deny access to certain pages. 4. To create predefined roles - that will allow for easy setup of new users. 5. To create custom roles for specific users - allowing them permission sets that are different from the predefined roles. • Is it safe to display user input as input values without sanitation?

  Say we have a form where the user types in various info. We validate the info, and find that something is wrong. A field is missing, invalid email, et cetera. When displaying the form to the user again I of course don't want him to have to type in everything again so I want to populate the input fields. Is it safe to do this without sanitation? If not, what is the minimum sanitation that should be done first? And to clearify: It would of course be sanitized before being for example added to a database or displayed elsewhere on the site.

  I've used boost::gregorian::date a bit now. I can see that there are the related months & years & weeks duration types. I can see how to use known durations to advance a given date. Qu: But how can I get the difference between two dates in months (or years or weeks) ? I was hoping to find a function like: template<typename DURATION> DURATION date_diff<DURATION>(const date& d1,const date& d2); There would need to be some handling of rounding too.

• Any reccomendations for implementing a user-defined workflow in Ruby?

  I'm interested in creating a system where the user can define the steps in a workflow. Is there a gem that already handles this? I thought about one of the state machine gems, but they all seem to be for pre-defined states. I've been thinking maybe i can use state machine for the individual step types... An email step could have a few states [New, Assigned, Done], and the workflow could just be lists of these stateful steps. Are there other solutions out there?

  I've been writing C# for seven years now, and I keep wondering, why do enums have to be of an integral type? Wouldn't it be nice to do something like: enum ErrorMessage { NotFound: "Could not find", BadRequest: "Malformed request" } Is this a language design choice, or are there fundamental incompatibilities on a compiler, CLR, or IL level? Do other languages have enums with string or complex (i.e. object) types? What languages? (I'm aware of workarounds; my question is, why are they needed?) EDIT: "workarounds" = attributes or static classes with consts :)

• Why are there so many floats in the Android API?

  The default floating point type in Java is the double. If you hard code a constant like 2.5 into your program, Java makes it a double automatically. When you do an operation on floats or ints that could potentially benefit from more precision, the type is 'promoted' to a double. But in the Android API, everything seems to be a float from sound volumes to rectangle coordinates. There's a structure called RectF used in most drawing; the F is for float. It's really a pain for programmers who are casting promoted doubles back to (float) pretty often. Don't we all agree that Java code is messy and verbose enough as it is? Usually math coprocessors and accelerators prefer double in Java because it corresponds to one of the internal types. Is there something about Android's Dalvik VM that prefers floats for some reason? Or are all the floats just a result of perversion in API design?

• ASP.NET: How to specify which button should defaultly react for an Enter press?

  I have a webpage where there are two buttons and a textbox. When the page loads and user presses enter, the first button is clicked - and that is ok. I would like to assure that if user enters the textBox and types anything there and THEN presses enter, the second button is clicked. When I enter the textBox I can tell that the first button will be used when I press enter, because it is a bit dark-blue-bordered then. I tried javascript's if (event && event.keyCode == 13) document.getElementById("Button2").click(); but it somehow doesn't work. So my second thought was that there must be a possibility to tell the browser which button should defaultly react for an enter press when I'm in a specific textBox (the dark-blue-bordered button). Edit: it might matter that first button is input and the second one is asp:Button

My requirement is additionally pass the registry path as parameter, so when a launch happens (note no change in the launch) iexplore <<"URL String" should translate into something like iexplore <<"URL String" "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\" How should my registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command\ modified so as to get the extra registry path appended for all shell launches ? • Object to Network serialization - with an existing protocol

  I'm writing a client for a server program written in C++. As is not unusual, all the networking protocol is in a format where packets can be easily memcopied into/out of a C++ structure (1 byte packet code, then different arrangements per packet type). I could do the same thing in C#, but is there an easier way, especially considering lots of the data is fixed-length char arrays that I want to play with as strings? Or should I just suck it up and convert types as needed? I've looked at using the ISerializable interface, but it doesnt look as low level as is required.

• How do you learn a class hierarchy quickly?

  Hi, Something I don't enjoy about programming is learning a new API. For example, right now I'm trying to learn Windows Identity Foundation. Its frustrating because I'm going to spend the bulk of the time learning how a few classes work and actually only write several lines of code. In .NET, there are so many types that I seem to spend more time hunting around in msdn for a class than writing code. It also interrupts my workflow while I'm working because I have to type a little bit than look something up. Obviously, I don't have to do this for the basic classes. Whenever new things come though there is definitely some looking up to do. Then I often don't reuse that class enough to really review it or bring it into action. I'm wondering if anybody out there has a found a way to memorize (or look up more efficiently) these object model hierarchies?

• Why is sqrt() not a method on Float?

  In Ruby everything is an object. That's why I don't understand why we have the Math module. It seems to me that most (all?) of the functions in the Math module should have been methods on the numeric types like Integer, Float and so on. E.g. instead of Math.sqrt(5) it would make more sense to have 5.sqrt The same goes for sin, cos, tan, log10 and so on. Does anyone know why all these functions ended up in the Math module?

  Hi, I display some data on my website and one of the data feed elements is an image. [title] => Product title [description] => some description [image] => www.some-domain.com/product-image/p12345.jpg I then display this image using <img alt="product" src="<?=$data['image']?>" /> Most of the images are 80x80, 120x100 or other less than 150 in width, which perfectly fit in the website template, but some of them are quite large such as 800x600 which distort the layout. I want a control on these types. I tried to set WIDTH="150", but as the width vary they dont look good. I was thinking If I could set a fixed width to images, say, larger than 250px then I can live with it for now. Any ideas how to achieve this? Thanks
