• How to prevent boot manager missing after cloning a win764 image using Ghost 2003?

  I am running ghost 2003 command -fdsp, but once we have cloned the image and restored it onto exactly the same make and model machine, we are force to run win7 setup and run a repair which fixes the boot menu, I want to prevent this requirement to fix the problem, any suggestions besides the obvious of using Windows AIK tools, new versions of ghost/clonzilla. I want to prevent the problem in the first place, it's 1 partition only, on a levano workstation m82 with UEFI and a 100mb system reserved partition. Windows Boot Manager screen and states: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3.Click "Repair you computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Status: 0xc000000e

• Hyper-V Manager - Host Access During a Catastrophe

  How can I ensure that I can always have Hyper-V Manager access to a Hyper-V server, even in the event that the Active Directory Server is down (in a domain-login environment)? Background: The one that came before me, set up the company's servers as virtual machines on top of a host running Hyper-V Server 6.1 (7601) Service Pack 1. For managing Hyper-V, he installed Window 7 onto a virtual machine (run on the same host) with Hyper-V Manager installed. When the (virtual) Active Directory server (run on this same host) is rebooted, during that reboot, I'm unable to RDP into the Windows 7 virtual machine, and I'm therefore unable to access Hyper-V Manager when the Active Directory server is down. I suspect I can't login because I can't authenticate with the Active Directory Server. I'm going to install Hyper-V Manger onto some addition manager's workstations, but how can I ensure they'll have access in a catastrophe where Active Directory authentication isn't possible?

• Random touchpad and keyboard freezes on new installation

  My touchpad and keyboard freeze up on my newly installed Ubuntu 10.10. They remain frozen until you shut down manually. No keys work, cursor doesn't move - it's like a screenshot. I was using Ubuntu 10.4 via wubi before on this Laptop where this problem never occurred. (I did not migrate wubi or upgrade to 10.10, it's a fresh start. 64-bit on Dell Studio, plenty of RAM, plenty of free space on partition etc.) I can't say there is a pattern yet, once it happened during the download of packages with the Update Manager, once it was just using Firefox, no other program running. In between these crashes the laptop was booted once, updates were installed etc., firefox was used and there weren't any problems. Both crashes should be in the attached kern.log and I noticed there were some error problems before the last crash (at the end, obviously). It seems the wireless was experiencing problems. This wasn't noticed on the user end, since the touchpad + keyboard were already frozen. kern.log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/552617/ How can the freezes be fixed? Edit: I will try Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 when next freeze occurs, to see if it works again after this, as suggested here. But the keyboard seemed pretty frozen to me.

• Microsoft Test Manager error in displaying test steps caused by malware

  Sometimes the tool is blamed for errors which are not the fault of the tool – this is one such story.  It was however, not so easy to get to the bottom of it, so I hope sharing this story can help some others. One of our test developers started to get this message inside the test steps part of a test case in the MTM. saying “Could not load file or assembly ‘0 bytes from System, Version=4.0.0.0,……..” The same error came up inside Visual Studio when we opened a test case there. Then we noted a similar error on another piece of software – this error: A System.BadImageFormatException, and same message as above, but just for framework 2.0. We found this  description which pointed to a malware problem (See bottom of that post), that is a fake anti-spyware program called “Additional Guard”.  We checked the computer in question using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware tool.  It found and cleaned out 753 registry keys!!  After this cleanup operation the error was gone.  This is a great tool !  The “Additional Guard” program had been inadvertently installed, and then uninstalled afterwards, but the corrupted keys were of course not removed.  We also noted that this computer had full corporate virus scanning and malware protection, but still this nasty little thing still slipped through. • Elastic versus Distributed in caching.

  Until now, I hadn't heard about Elastic Caching yet. Today I read Mike Gualtieri's Blog entry. I immediately thought about Oracle Coherence and got a little scare throughout the reading. Elastic Caching is the next step after Distributed Caching. As we've always positioned Coherence as a Distributed Cache, I thought for a brief instance that Oracle had missed a new trend/technology. But then I started reading the characteristics of an Elastic Cache. Forrester definition: Software infrastructure that provides application developers with data caching services that are distributed across two or more server nodes that consistently perform as volumes grow can be scaled without downtime provide a range of fault-tolerance levels Hey wait a minute, doesn't Coherence fullfill all these requirements? Oh yes, I think it does! The next defintion in the article is about Elastic Application Platforms. This is mainly more of the same with the addition of code execution. Now there is analytics functionality in Oracle Coherence. The analytics capability provides data-centric functions like distributed aggregation, searching and sorting. Coherence also provides continuous querying and event-handling. I think that when it comes to providing an Elastic Application Platform (as in the Forrester definition), Oracle is close, nearly there. And what's more, as Elastic Platform is the next big thing towards the big C word, Oracle Coherence makes you cloud-ready ;-) There you go! Find more info on Oracle Coherence here.

• Connecting to a new installation of TFS 2010

  When the installation and configuration for TFS 2010 is completed, the next step is to connect and use TFS.  There is a Web Access component, but in order for it to serve useful you need to create a project into the Team Project Collection.  This is where Visual Studio 2010 comes in. Open Visual Studio 2010, then click on the Team Explorer Tab (red arrow pointing to it) or go to View > Team Explorer. Once there, click the Connect to Team Project toolbar button This will open up the Connect to Team Project dialog, click on Servers … On the Add/Remove Team Foundation Server dialog, click Add … On the Add Team Foundation Server, enter the name of your server and click ok. If you are prompted for credentials, provide the credentials needed. Once accepted, the server will be listed on the Add/Remove Team Foundations Server dialog, click close. You will be back at the Connect to Team Project dialog, assuming you have one Collection, click Connect. (In the event you have more than one project collection, select the appropriate collection and then click Connect) Your Team Explorer tab will look something like the image below.

  Am 14. Juni fand der Customer Experience Gipfel statt, der von Dialogum exklusiv für Oracle und seine Partner durchgeführt wurde. Dort konnten Partner und Endkunden über die Zukunft des Kundenmanagements diskutieren und erfuhren, was sich hinter dem Begriff „Customer Experience“ alles verbirgt. Die Konferenz begann mit einem Networking Dinner am Vorabend, an dem den 80 Teilnehmern in einer ersten Präsentation das Thema „Mobile Commerce“ vorgestellt wurde. Nach einem guten Abendessen hatten alle die Möglichkeit, auf einer Großleinwand beim EM-Spiel Deutschland gegen Holland mitzufiebern. Insgesamt war es ein sehr gelungener Abend, waren die deutschen Jungs doch siegreich und sicherten sich den Einzug ins Viertelfinale. Der Customer Experience Gipfel selbst hat dann alle Erwartungen übertroffen: 150 Teilnehmer, ein Drittel mehr als erwartet, zeigten großes Interesse an Multichannel-Strategien, Loyalty und wie man jeden einzelnen Schritt des Kunden im Kontakt mit dem Unternehmen zu einem positiven Kundenerlebnis werden lässt. So standen überwiegend Unternehmenspräsentationen aus den unterschiedlichen Branchen wie Telekommunikation, Handel oder Travel & Transportation auf dem Programm. Neun Round Tables, fast alle von den teilnehmenden Oracle Partnern moderiert, und 1:1-Gespräche rundeten die Konferenz ab. Und Zeit zum Networking blieb natürlich auch. Bei diesem Angebot war das Teilnehmer-Fazit demnach durchwegs positiv, vor allem sind die Kunden (und Partner) schon auf Oracle Customer Experience (CX) und die Vorteile für das eigene Kundenmanagement gespannt. • GRUB2 prompt instead of BURG boot screen after mistake during BURG installation

  I just installed BURG, but during the installation I made a mistake: after the package was installed, I got to some command-line based GUI for configuration, where I forgot to mark my (only) hard disk as the boot device before I hit OK. I tried to reinstall (apt-get purge burg && apt-get autoremove followed by apt-get install burg) but I wasn't able to get to the same screen again (I didn't find the GUI). When I now start my computer, I am taken to a GRUB2 prompt and no BURG (or GRUB2) boot menu is shown. Since I don't know any GRUB commands and I am helpless. How do I reinstall GRUB/BURG correctly? Update: I rebooted my computer, and got a BURG prompt (which appears to be the same thing as a GRUB prompt, but if there's a difference I wouldn't know it...). I have booted from a Live USB, but I don't know what to do next. The text above has been updated to reflect this new situation - for the original text, please see the previous versions of this post. • OEPE with ADF binding support available: Total Eclipse

  The current release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, though in technology preview, brings Oracle ADF binding to the Eclipse IDE. You can download the Software from the link below: Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (12.1.1.1.0) Technical Preview New June 2012 Certified on Windows 7/XP/Vista, MacOS, and Linux. Supported on JDK 6. For many Eclipse users, ADF is new and therefore I expect them to need guidance and help in case they run into issues they don't know how to recover from. Similar, ADF users familiar with Oracle JDeveloper that want to give OEPE a try, will find things different in Eclipse and thus may have questions.  For both audiences I suggest to post issues to the OEPE forum on the Oracle Technology Network: I'll extend my OTN monitoring to include the OEPE forum on a daily basis to learn about developer needs, requirements and - of course - to catch bugs that need to be filed. From my side this is a part-time involvement, which means that the more ADF questions show on the forum, the more help I could need in answering them. The OTN forum for JDeveloper in my opnion wouldn't be the right place to go to unless the question is a generic ADF question that is not dependent on the integration in Eclipse. • Problem During Installation SQL Server 2005 on Windows 7

   Yesterday I was trying to install SQL Server 2005 on windows 7. During installation a popup error dialog shown with this message: The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually. Here is the captured screen: But in books online there was no useful information! After some hours googling, I did not found any useful information and at 3 o'clock of midnight, I was scratching my head! Believe it, I attempted to install SQL Server more than 15 times with different manners (with command prompt & parameters and else). Eventually I found the resource of problem, that was "BitDefender Internet Security 2010"! After uninstalling BitDefender Internet Security, I installed SQL Server 2005 and then reinstalled BitDefender. Just that! Problem resolved. Conclusion: After installing a new version of windows and it's requirements (like IIS and language specifications & else), first install the SQL Server and the Visual Studio and then other applications.Hope be helpful.

(TESTED ON 14.04) Open your terminal and type: sudo apt-get install v86d (TEST WITHOUT) Then: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Find this line: #GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 Add below (of course choose your resolution): GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32 (TRY WITHOUT OR DIFFERENT BIT DEPTH) GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1920x1080x32 (YOU CAN ALSO USE THE KEEP OPTION) Save file and type in terminal: echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash (ALLOWS TO AVOID THAT THE SPLASH SCREEN IS DISPLAYED FOR A FEW SECONDS) sudo update-initramfs -u sudo update-grub2 For all those who complain about the presence of black borders in "plymouth", try to make these changes before installing the nvidia driver or switch back from nvidia to nouveau and from nouveau to nvidia. Kernel update from the Software Updater? It happened to me; I don't know if it matters. I don't know for which of these reasons, but after a few reboots, the black borders are gone. • Management Reporter Installation – Lessons Learned Part II - Dynamics GP

  After feeling pretty good about my deployment skills of Management Reporter for Dynamics GP a few weeks ago, I ran into two additional lessons learned that I wanted to share. First, on another new deployment, I got the error shown below which says “An error occurred while creating the database.  View the installation log for additional information.”  This problem initially pointed me to KB 2406948 which did not provide resolution. After several hours of troubleshooting, I found there is an issue if the defaults database locations in SQL Server are set to the root of a drive. You will want to set the default to something like the following to get it installed; C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA.  My default database locations for the data and log files were indeed sitting on the H:\ and I:\ drives. To change this property in your SQL Server Instance you need to open SQL Server Management Studio, right click on the server, and choose properties and then database settings. When I initially got the error, I briefly considered creating the ManagementReporter database by hand, but experience tells me that would have created more headaches down the road. The second problem I ran into with this particular deployment of Management Reporter happened when I started the FRx conversion utility.  The errors reads “The ‘Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0’ provider is not registered on the local machine. I had a suspicion that this error was related to the fact FRx uses outdated technology and I happened to be on a new install of Server 2008 R2.  A knowledge base search quickly pointed me to KB 2102486. The resolution for this Management Reporter issue was to install the Microsoft Access Database Engine Redistributable, by following the site below. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C06B8369-60DD-4B64-A44B-84B371EDE16D&displaylang=en

  I'm having this issue trying to uninstall and/or upgrade the Adobe flash player plug-in. Here's what I've ran through the terminal: $ sudo apt-get install -f Reading package lists... • FMw Diagnostic Framework : Automatic Capture of Diagnostic Data Upon First Failure!

  Introduction There is nothing more frustrating than a problem that "cannot be reproduced". Logs, configuration files have been analysed but there just isn't enough information to establish the root cause. The issue maybe closed, but you are left with the feeling that the problem will raise its ugly head again in the future. Trouble is, to resolve such issues you need to capture diagnostic data at the exact time the incident occurs. Step forward Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework!  Diagnostic Framework monitors WebLogic Managed Servers and delivers "Automatic capture of diagnostic data upon first failure". To quote fromOracle Fusion Middleware Administrator's Guide 11g Release 1 (11.1.1)Chapter 13 Diagnosing Problems "When a critical error occurs ... the Diagnostic Framework automatically collects diagnostics, such as thread dumps, DMS metric dumps, and WebLogic Diagnostics Framework (WLDF) server image dumps ... The data is stored in a file-based repository and is accessible with command-line utilities." In other words the data collected upon first failure - especially the thread and image dumps - provides a snapshot of the system as or immediately after the problem occurs. The table below shows the type of WebLogic Server issues which fall into the scope of Diagnostic Framework How to Configure Diagnostic Framework? Depending on your Fusion Middleware product choice you may not need to do anything! Diagnostic Framework is automatically installed, configured and initiated for any WebLogic Domain which has the Oracle Java Required Files (JRF) template applied. This template is applied by default whenever you configure WebLogic Managed Servers for products such as Portal / Forms / Reports / Discoverer Identity Management ( OID , OAM , OIM etc) WebCenter SOA Check your WebLogic Domain directory structure. If you have an "adr" sub directory under DOMAIN_HOME/servers/<servername>/ then JRF template has been applied and Diagnostic Framework will be in play. Should the "adr" sub directory not exist, review the advice given in My Oracle Support article How to Apply FMW ( EM ) Control and JRF to a WebLogic Domain and Managed Servers [ID 947043.1] If you are working with a standalone WebLogic Server solution and applying Oracle JRF is not acceptable, consider using WLDF - WebLogic Diagnostic Framework. (Fusion Middleware Diagnostic Framework makes use of WLDF under the covers.) How to Upload Diagnostic Framework Incident Data to Oracle Support Some Background Information There are three interfaces to the Repository: Enterprise Manager Cloud Control (Support Workbench) WLST (Command Line) ADRCI (Command Line) The Enterprise Manager Cloud Control does provide a nice GUI interface to search, view and package diagnostic framework incidents. However, this software is not to be confused with Fusion Middleware (EM) Control. Cloud Control (formerly known as Grid Control) is part of the Enterprise Manager media package. EM Cloud Control has it's own install and configuration story. Therefore, for the benefit of those yet to install and play with Cloud Control, I am going to describe how to use the command line tools. Ideally, you would only need to one command line interface, but currently I suggest using both - mainly due to the fact that ADRCI SHOW INCIDENTS does not reveal the description behind the Diagnostic Framework error code. Instructions: Note: WLST and ADRCI are case sensitive when it comes to handling parameter values. If you make a mistake, expect an unfriendly syntax error message. 1) Find the incident Note: The managed server which you are troubleshooting must be up and running. If the managed server is down, ensure the domain's Admin Server is accessible. If you cannot connect to the Admin Server or the Managed Server the example WLST commands will not work. a) Launch WLST  Note: Use the WLST which resides in the "oracle_common" directory (not WL_HOME/common/bin) otherwise you will get a syntax error like the one below Traceback (innermost last):  File "<console>", line 1, in ?NameError: listIncidents MW_HOME/oracle_common/common/bin/wlst.sh b) Connect to the managed server or the admin server e.g. wls:/offline> connect('weblogic','welcome1','t3://localhost:7020') c) Run the command wls:/MyDomain/serverConfig> listIncidents() This will list the incidents for the server to which you have connected. • Manager/Container class vs static class methods

  Suppose I a have a Widget class that is part of a framework used independently by many applications. I create Widget instances in many situations and their lifetimes vary. In addition to Widget's instance specified methods, I would like to be able to perform the follow class wide operations: Find a single Widget instance based on a unique id Iterate over the list of all Widgets Remove a widget from the set of all widgets In order support these operations, I have been considering two approaches: Container class - Create some container or manager class, WidgetContainer, which holds a list of all Widget instances, support iteration and provides methods for Widget addition, removal and lookup. For example in C#: public class WidgetContainer : IEnumerable<Widget { public void AddWidget(Widget); public Widget GetWidget(WidgetId id); public void RemoveWidget(WidgetId id); } Static class methods - Add static class methods to Widget. For example: public class Widget { public Widget(WidgetId id); public static Widget GetWidget(WidgetId id); public static void RemoveWidget(WidgetId id); public static IEnumerable<Widget AllWidgets(); } Using a container class has the added problem of how to access the container class. Make it a singleton?..yuck! Create some World object that provides access to all such container classes? I have seen many frameworks that use the container class approach, so what is the general consensus?

• Clusterware 11gR2 &ndash; Setting up an Active/Passive failover configuration

  Oracle provides many interesting ways to ensure High Availability. Dataguard configurations, RAC configurations or even both (as recommended for a Maximum Available Architecture - MAA) are the most frequently found. But when it comes to protecting a system with an Active/Passive architecture with failover capabilities, one often thinks to expensive third party cluster systems. Oracle Clusterware technology, which comes free with Oracle Database, is – in the knowing of most people - often linked to Oracle RAC and therefore, is rarely used to implement failover solutions. 11gR2 Clusterware – which is part of Oracle Grid Infrastructure - provides a comprehensive framework to setup automatic failover configurations. It is actually possible to make “failover-able'” and, therefore to protect, almost every kind of application (from xclock to the more complex Application Server) In the next couple of lines, I will try to present the different steps to achieve this goal : Have a fully operational 11gR2 database protected by automatic failover capabilities. I assume you are fluent in installing Oracle Database 11gR2, Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11gR2 on a Linux system and that ASM is not a problem for you (as I am using it as a shared storage). If not, please have a look at Oracle Documentation. As often, I made my tests using an Oracle VirtualBox environment. The scripts are tested and functional. Unfortunately, there can always be a typo or a mistake. This blog entry is not a course around the Clusterware Framework. I just hope it will let you see how powerful it is and that it will give you the whilst to go further with it…   Prerequisite 2 Linux boxes (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02) at the same OS level. I used OEL 5 Update 5 with Enterprise Kernel. Shared Storage (SAN). On my VirtualBox system, I used Openfiler to simulate the SAN Oracle 11gR2 Database (11.2.0.1) Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure (11.2.0.1)   Step 1 – Install the software Using asmlib, create 3 ASM disks (ASM_CRS, ASM_DTA and ASM_FRA) Install Grid Infrastructure for a cluster (OELCluster01 and OELCluster02 are the 2 nodes of the cluster) Use ASM_CRS to store Voting Disk and OCR. Use SCAN. Install Oracle Database Standalone binaries on both nodes. Use asmca to check/mount the disk groups on 2 nodes Use dbca to create and configure a database on the primary node Let’s name it DB11G. Copy the pfile, password file to the second node. Create adump directoty on the second node.   Step 2 - Setup the resource to be protected After its creation with dbca, the database is automatically protected by the Oracle Restart technology available with Grid Infrastructure. Consequently, it restarts automatically (if possible) after a crash (ex: kill –9 smon). A database resource has been created for that in the Cluster Registry. We can observe this with the command : crsctl status resource that shows and ora.dba11g.db entry. Let’s save the definition of this resource, for future use : mkdir –p /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts chown oracle:oinstall /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts crsctl status resource ora.db11g.db -p > /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/myResource.txt Although very interesting, Oracle Restart is not cluster aware and cannot restart the database on any other node of the cluster. So, let’s remove it from the OCR definitions, we don’t need it ! srvctl stop database -d DB11G srvctl remove database -d DB11G Instead of it, we need to create a new resource of a more general type : cluster_resource. Here are the steps to achieve this : Create an action script :  /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh #!/bin/bash export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1 export ORACLE_SID=DB11G case $1 in 'start')   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus /nolog <<EOF   connect / as sysdba   startup EOF   RET=0   ;; 'stop')   $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus /nolog <<EOF   connect / as sysdba   shutdown immediate EOF   RET=0   ;; 'check')    ok=`ps -ef | grep smon | grep $ORACLE_SID | wc -l`    if [ $ok = 0 ]; then      RET=1    else      RET=0    fi    ;; '*')      RET=0   ;; esac if [ $RET -eq 0 ]; then    exit 0 else    exit 1 fi   This script must provide, at least, methods to start, stop and check the database. It is self-explaining and contains nothing special. Just be aware that it is run as Oracle user (because of the ACL property – see later) and needs to know about the environment. It also needs to be present on every node of the cluster. chmod +x /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh scp  /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/my_ActivePassive_Cluster.sh   oracle@OELCluster02:/crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts Create a new resource file, based on the information we got from previous  myResource.txt . Name it myNewResource.txt. myResource.txt  is shown below. As we can see, it defines an ora.database.type resource, named ora.db11g.db. A lot of properties are related to this type of resource and do not need to be used for a cluster_resource. Notice the HOSTING_MEMBERS that enumerates the members of the cluster (as returned by the olsnodes command). Take care of the resource type. It needs to be a cluster_resource and not a ora.database.type resource (Oracle recommendation) .   crsctl add resource DB11G.db  -type cluster_resource -file /crs/11.2.0/HA_scripts/myNewResource.txt Step 3 - Start the resource crsctl start resource DB11G.db This command launches the ACTION_SCRIPT with a start and a check parameter on the primary node of the cluster. Step 4 - Test this We will test the setup using 2 methods. crsctl relocate resource DB11G.db This command calls the ACTION_SCRIPT  (on the two nodes)  to stop the database on the active node and start it on the other node. Once done, we can revert back to the original node, but, this time we can use a more “MS$ like” method :Turn off the server on which the database is running. After short delay, you should observe that the database is relocated on node 1. Conclusion Once the software installed and the standalone database created (which is a rather common and usual task), the steps to reach the objective are quite easy : Create an executable action script on every node of the cluster. Create a resource file. Create/Register the resource with OCR using the resource file. Start the resource.
