• What's the best way to copy deduplicated files onto a new Server 2012 drive?

  We have a deduplicated volume on a Windows Server 2012 machine that is approaching it's limits. It is a 1.3TB drive with ~10TB of duplicated data. We want to copy all of this data onto a larger 4TB drive. What is the best way to perform this copy such that we only copy the 1.3TB of deduplicated data instead of unpacking the entire 10TB and repacking it on the other end? edit: I attempted a standard explorer file copy and a Copy-Item but neither appeared to be dedup-aware. I didn't run either to completion however so I can't say this is the case for sure.

• Where does Skype save its chat history & contacts?

  I'm aware that there is a main.db file that is stored in a Windows directory. On XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<windows user>\Application Data\Skype\<username> But I just downloaded Skype onto my Android and noticed that all chats are sync'd. So to me, this suggests that the main.db file is not the only storage being used (because it is obviously not on my phone). Are contacts and chat history stored in my online Skype account? Does anyone know where I can find more information about this? I read this thread: Does skype automatically save chat history to the cloud? And how do you explain the sync'd chats?

  I have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. I need to copy files from network folder, I connected as a Z: drive. I need to schedule the copy. In scheduler I run it every 5 minutes. robocopy.exe Z:\ C:\destination /E I've tried to put it to .bat file, tried to write in scheduler, it doesn't help. I've set run with highest privilegies... • Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

  There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)

  I have systat version 7.0.2 and the /etc/sysconfig/sysstat has the entry HISTORY=27, this is on a redhat enterprise server 5.6, the cron setup for this is # run system activity accounting tool every minute * * * * * root /usr/lib64/sa/sa1 1 1 # generate a daily summary of process accounting at 23:53 53 23 * * * root /usr/lib64/sa/sa2 -A I get the following error from the cron sa2 -A find: /var/log/sa/sa13: No such file or directory, Looking at the directory /var/log/sa the files are created from sa01 through sa10 (sa1 created on sep1, sa2 created on sep2 and so on), then the rest of the files are from sa14 through to sa 31 (created from Aug 14 to Aug 31). I have not made any changes on the server so I am not sure why I am getting these error messages and is there a way to fix this?. Someone suggested creating empty files from sa11 through sa14 to fix this but I am not sure if this might mess up something .

• Missing Desktop Icon Labels in Windows 7

  Hey guys. Big problem that has been bothering me to no end. My desktop icons have been stripped of their icon labels, and nothing seems to be recovering them. To be clear, when I attempt to rename, the text shows up, and when I view my desktop in an explorer window, all text is preserved. System restore to a stock state will not recover. No changes have been done to the computer-- no installs or downloads for two weeks prior to this error. Rebuilt the icon cache, still no response. Anybody know what can be causing this problem? • Google Apps Premier - Viewing shared calendars in outlook

  We currently migrated from exchange to Google Apps Email and have been having issues when it comes to viewing shared calendars from within Outlook. Users are able to view other calendars from within the Google calendar tool but they cannot see these calendars in Outlook. It appears that users with the "Manage Changes" permission are able to view other calendars but they are also able to see any private appointments that a user has created as well. Is anyone aware of any 3rd party tools or workarounds that allow users to view shared calendars within Outlook without having to use the Google calendar tool?

• Export policy configuration from eTrust ITM 8.1

  Currently we are using the Enterprise AV Solution eTrust ITM 8.1. The licenses are running out in october and we are going to replace eTrust with another AV solution. The eTrust Server is running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 with an MS SQL 2000 Standard Edition. The problem is that we've got many different policy - sets which we have to redefine in the new AV solution. Is there any way with eTrust ITM 8.1 to export the different policies as csv, pdf ... whatever?   I'm researching a sever clustering architecture as a redundancy and backup solution for a client, and something that isn't made clear is whether or not i can use server clustering to replace a file server with backup solution. Forgive my Elementary understanding of server clustering but supposing: 2 Sites (NJ, CA) Identical Servers at each site setup as a Remote Site Cluster nodes with Windows Enterprise server 2008 r2 Services: File, Terminal, AD, and maybe DNS Will the following will be true: Files (including data drives) will be synced between the two servers eliminating the need for third party backup/mirroring software to sync/backup files. Also supposing i use roaming profiles w/ folder redirection; How will client computer in the WAN access their data through the cluster (i.e. will they automatically choose the best route)

• Does Microsoft offer a corporate IM/collaboration tool similar to Campfire? My googlefu skills appear to be failing me today.

  I mentioned to my boss that we should look into a single unified IM client that we could use and secure on a corporate level, and then suggested Campfire. We're a primarily Microsoft house so he suggested we use something that would better integrate with SharePoint and the other tools our end users use in house. However, I'm not aware of any Microsoft tool that does something like this. Obviously there is MSN Messenger but I think/hope he wasn't referring to that. Other than a product from 2005 I haven't been able to locate a Microsoft corporate IM tool...does anybody know what he may have been talking about?

  Windows Vista Service Pack2 32 bit I uninstalled C++ re-distrubutables (was not aware they are necessary for some applications to run) and I am facing error Cannot start application because the side-by-side configuration is not correct when i start applications like Avast, Revo Uninstaller etc. I came across this page. But the downloaded vcredist_86.exe doesn't seem to do much. It extracts itself and that's it nothing after that. No error nothing. I just finished installing 300+ MB updates on my system, so i don't want to use the System Restore option [And, I don't know which Restore Point to revert to]. Any other way to get this done?

• Interconnection between 2 computers in different networks.

  Hi, What I want is to connect 2 computers (work and personal) primary for using a software KVM (Input Director or Synergy). Transferring files between them would be a plus. The main issue is that the work computer is in a secured enterprise network, and my personal computer is using a 3G+ modem for Internet access. On the work computer I do not have Internet access (only local network). I want to somehow connect them without to mess up either networks. I want my personal computer to not be seen in the work network. Is it possible? Suggestions: - use a simple UTP cable to connect the 2 computers with each other. Can they each be in both 2 networks without issues? - use some kind of usb cable, if exists

• How do I display the Java console?

  I'm aware of the fact that you can set it to "show" in the Java control panel, but that's not what I'm asking about. I'm curious about the other options... "Do not start" is pretty straightforward, but what about "Hide"? That would seem to imply that it is indeed running. If so, how can I make it show on demand from the hidden state? Reason: It's annoying to have it open ALL the time, hoping there's a way to (preferably via keystroke) bring it from "hidden" to "shown" state for occasional debugging.

• A unique identifier for a Domain

  I asked a question over on StackOverflow and was directed to ask a related one here to see if I could get any additional input. Basically, I am looking to have my application aware of what domain it's running under, if any at all. (I want to expose certain debugging facilities only in house, and due to our deployment model it isn't possible to have a different build.) Since I am over paranoid, I didn't want to just rely on the domain name to ensure we are in house. As such I noted the DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_INFO (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675912(v=vs.85).aspx ) returned from DsGetDcName (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms675983(v=vs.85).aspx) has a GUID associated with it, however I can find little if any information on it. I am assuming this GUID is generated at the time the first DC in a domain is created, and that it would live on for the life of the domain. Does anyone else have any inner knowledge and would be kind enough to confirm or deny my assumptions?

  I am using Bash to install a customised version of JBoss, and one of the things I would like to do is install the correct version of the Apache Portable Runtime, which is a native binary. This script could be run on both 32 and 64 bit versions of RHEL. What are my options for identifying which version of the APR to install? I think we only have 32bit and x64-based systems here. I would still like to identify i64 systems so that the script can refuse to install on that type of machine. I am aware of using uname -m and grepping /proc/cpuinfo to find out, but was wondering which approach others would recommend?

• How to disable multiple form submit (POST) in IIS

  We had a major SharePoint outage a few months back because a user wedged their keyboard in such a way as to cause the Enter button to be pressed indefinitely. The user was on a customized people search page and hundreds of POSTs by the same user were submitted asynchronously, which overloaded the server. Because I work in a large organization, I am looking for a more global way to prevent this from happening. Is there a way to prevent multiple web form submissions by a common user within a short period of time within IIS? I am aware we can write javascript to disable the button after it is clicked, but we are hoping to prevent this issue from occurring on other pages where a similar possibility may exist. Update: It appears looking at the source code, the javascript is performing a document.location = url, whenever keycode 13 (Enter) is pressed. Again, we can write JS to prevent this in this location, but we also want to be able to guard against this kind of issue more generally... preferably at the IIS level.

• We have a Solaris 9 server running Oracle 10G and have been getting memory consumption errors for a few weeks now

  We recently upgraded our Enterprise application and everything worked ok until one weekend when we did a server reboot, ever since then we have run into memory errors. The server has 4GB of physical memory installed and the kernel parameters are set to the following (/etc/system). I'm not an Oracle guy so I'm not sure where to start looking but any informaiton is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. There are two databases running on this server, one is a production database and the other is a pre-production database. • RAID 10 over RAID 5 when using SSDs

  I am considering implementing an iSCSI shared storage array using SATA SSDs instead of the 15k RPM SAS drives we normally purchase. We normally use RAID 10 because of spindle contention with the random IO produced by virtualized workloads. I was wondering if we could switch to RAID 5 or RAID 6 to have more usuable space now that spindle contention is less of an issue. A question in my mind is how much overhead there is from the controller calculating parity. I am aware that this configuration will not allow TRIM to function. Our current workloads are running on a Dell H800 with a 24 bay external enclosure.

  I try to realize a multisensor system (without Display or keyboard) which needs sudo rights directly after bootup (Ubuntu 12.04 server for ARM). Therefore, I would like to automatically login as root. (just turn on the power and the system will boot without any password request etc) I know that this isn't recommended but some USB issues forcing me to use root rights. I'm perfectly aware of what I'm doing so please don't tell me not to do it. I looked up the web but could find a solution... It would be great to get your help. Thank you.

• Windows 8 / IIS 8 Concurrent Requests Limit

  IIS 8 on Windows Server 2012 doesn’t have any fixed concurrent request limit, apart from whatever limit would be reached when resources are maxed. However, the client version of IIS 8, which is on Windows 8, does have a concurrent connection request limitation to limit high traffic production uses on a client edition of Windows. Starting with IIS 7 (Windows Vista), the behavior changed from previous versions.  In previous client versions of IIS, excess requests would throw a 403.9 error message (Access Forbidden: Too many users are connected.).  Instead, Windows Vista, 7 and 8 queue excessive requests so that they will be handled gracefully, although there is a maximum number of requests that will be processed simultaneously. Thomas Deml provided a concurrent request chart for Windows Vista many years ago, but I have been unable to find an equivalent chart for Windows 8 so I asked Wade Hilmo from the IIS team what the limits are.  Since this is controlled not by the IIS team itself but rather from the Windows licensing team, he asked around and found the authoritative answer, which I’ll provide below. • SVN: Working with branches using the same working copy

  We've just moved to SVN from CVS. We have a small team and everyone checks in code on the trunk and we have never ever used branches for development. We each have directories on a remote dev server with the codebase checked out. Each developer works on their own sandbox with an associated URL to pull up the app in a browser (something like the setup here: Trade-offs of local vs remote development workflows for a web development team). I've decided that for my current project, I'll use a branch because it would span multiple releases. I've already cut a branch out, but I am using the same directory as the one originally checked out (i.e. for the trunk). Since it's the same directory (or working copy) for both the branch and the trunk, if for e.g. a bug pops up in the app I switch to the trunk and commit the change there, and then switch back to my branch for my project development. My questions are: Is this a sane way to work with branches? Are there any pitfalls that I need to be aware of? What would be the optimal way to work with branches if separate working copies are out of the question? I haven't had issues yet as I have just started doing this way but all the tutorials/books/blog posts I have seen about branching with SVN imply working with different working copies (or perhaps I haven't come across an explanation of mixed working copies in plain English). I just don't want to be sorry three months down the road when its time to integrate the branch back to the trunk.
