  • VMWare Player: how to avoid always-on-top of other windows

    This question seems a little bit related, but not fully (I'm not using two monitors nor full-screen mode). I'm running VMWare Player 2.5.4 on Windows XP in normal window mode. Unfortunately, if I switch to other applications, VMWare remains the front-most window. I can avoid it by clicking the other application's title bar or if it pops up a dialog, but how can I avoid VMWare's "always-on-top"-mode completely?

What exactly are these "visual themes"? How does disabling them affect the system? From what I can guess, a "visual theme" is a custom window border style around window content area created using hooks and WDM API calls, though I am prepared to be corrected.   • How do I restore system default settings on Linux Mint KDE?

    I did something weird and now my text size is like 3pt on every system window, but when I go in and change my window fonts to larger to something that looks normal, it makes my clock, bash, and other fonts absolutely gigantic. Is there any way I can just roll back my system and it's settings? It wouldn't be much bother as I installed the OS yesterday. I'd hate to have to reinstall entirely though, but I guess it's an option.

    I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, the two screens have different DPIs. Ideally I would like them to be the same, but as this is not the case, the best option I can see is reducing the resolution of the MBP screen to bring its DPI as close as possible to the external monitor. This introduces scaling artefacts on the screen, as LCDs don't look good at non-native resolutions. Is there a standard or best way of handling this, and if not, what other options are available?

    I remember with Windows XP, minimize used to be like alt m - n or something. In Windows 7, it is Windows - Down. The problem with that though is that you have to use both hands (the Window button is too far away from the directional buttons), which is kind of annoying because generally, one of my hands is on the mouse. Is there any other keyboard to minimize a window besides Windows - Down in Windows 7?

C:\path\to\putty.exe -load "[Sessionname]" -l [user] -pw [password] -m C:\path\to\commands.txt Commands.txt contains the following command ps -elf|grep 'sometext' but when I try to do so a new window for putty comes and exits instantly after login. I cannot see the output of command in commands.txt What is the problem;. Is there error in my approach or I need some more command to make the putty window pause for sometime before exiting.

    On Windows 7, dir or tree can't show unicode characters, even starting cmd with cmd /U So I would press Window Key + R to run something, and type in cmd /U so that the content might handle Unicode. And then using dir or tree /F, the content in Unicode won't show as Unicode. (in Window Explorer (file manager), the Unicode will show) Is there a way to handle it? To get Unicode characters to test your filenames, you can go to http://news.google.com/news?edchanged=1&ned=tw and you will be able to get many Unicode characters there (UTF-8)

    I'm trying to set up a shared filesystem on EC2 and I've read tutorials such as this: http://blog.ronaldmccollam.com/2012/07/configuring-nfs-on-ubuntu-in-amazon-ec2.html In step 2 it talks about configuring the exports, for this I need an IP range but when I'm auto-scaling I can't predict what the IP will be before it scales.     Is there a way to configure Internet Explorer's "Open links from other programs in:" option per program? I'm looking for a way to allow different programs to act differently when clicking hyperlinks. For example, if I click a hyperlink in Microsoft Outlook I'd prefer it to open a new tab in the current window (option 2) but if I click a link out of an instant messenger program I'd prefer it to open in the current tab or window (option 3). Version wise I'm looking for a way to do it with IE 8+.

However, I want this to only trigger if the active window is an Explorer window.     I'm using VS2010, which has the cool feature of allowing you to drag panels out of the main IDE window. I like to drag some of the panels off to one of my other monitors. Unfortunately, after each run/debug session, VS2010 seems to forget where I had the panels, and dumps them right in the middle of the IDE window, and I have to move it again. Does anyone know what to do about this?

    I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.22, the version that comes with Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10. When I hit "Reply" or "Write", a new email window pops up, but it ends up being under the main Thunderbird Window, and doesn't have focus. Thunderbird is the only application that exhibits this weird behaviour, and it just started happening one day, whereas it worked fine before. I've seen this problem years ago as well, and wasn't sure how I fixed it.

  • Pasting a download link into google chrome

    When I want to download something in Safari, like http://foo.com/bar.zip, all I have to do is paste that link into the dowloads window. Is there a way to do this in Chrome? I've gotten used to Safari, hitting cmd-alt-L (dowloads window), and then pasting. It's quick, neat, and saves me going to FileSave As... I like to keep my hands on the keyboard, so if there is a quick way to do this without using a mouse, that's my ideal solution.
