• Multithreded UI desktop application issues

  I am involved into development a rich UI project: desktop windows application. Application uses asynchronous invocations and in its turn it should be ready to process external messages (events). The problem is clear: at first time it was built as a simple prototype and it was not stress tested and all was fine. Then application was grown: the number of calls to server and number of events from server are high and performance is low. What is more users noticed that sometimes performance is extremal low. Asynchronous invocations based on thread pool (BeginInvoke, EndInvoke), external events are going from WCF service (.NET 3.5). My goal is synchronization of all tasks and putting priorities to every executions in desktop application. My question is: is there any practice how to reach my goal: patterns, task priority list, others? What should I do at first, second and next times? Thanks

  Just the other day, I went to the recently-released Oracle Solaris 11 library to search for information about the print service changes. I knew there had been changes in Oracle Solaris 11, but could not remember the new approach to printing. So, being the optimist that I (never) am, I went to the Oracle Solaris 11 Information Library on docs.oracle.com and typed "print service" into the search box. Imagine my surprise when the response back was: We did not find any search results for: print service site:download.oracle.com url:/docs/cd/E23824_01. OMG! WTF? Are you kidding me? After throwing a few stuffed animals at my computer screen, I tried again. Is search broken? Well, sort of (and I'm trying to get it fixed). In the meantime, however, there is a reasonably simple user workaround. Possibly unnoticed by most people, there is a Within drop-down menu on the Oracle search results page. If you simply open the Within menu, select Documentation, and click the little magnifying glass again, you (should) get the expected results. Is it perfect?   I noticed that when using Visual Studio's 'Find in files' search feature, it does not appear to search/find text in CSS files even though the text does exist. I can't find anything on the net regarding this issue and cannot determine even if Visual Studio allows you to search for text within CSS files. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this; Is it supposed to allow you to do this? If so, what reasons would explain why this is not working?

  I have created a blog on blogger few days ago and created two blog entries on it. when i try creating AdSense account with blog's address it does not accept the application due to PageType. i have searched around on the net and found that its probably due to duplicate or insufficient content on the blog but either of my blog entry is more than 2,000 words and i have literally typed 80 percent of its content with only few code blocks copied from other sites.   So I just got semi-serious about running some AdSense sites over the past 6 months and the eCPM's have hovered between 1.38 and 1.42 [yes it's that close] when I look at the eCPM for each month. Obviously some deviation day to day but pretty damn close to a buck forty in aggregate. So far for January I am sitting at 0.80 for an eCPM. I know it's not a huge sample size but the daily pageviews are fairly consistent [actually a bit higher] than where they were in December. I am trying to justify this by thinking that somehow a lot of ad buyers buy inventory for the year and have to get setup to do another big buy now that it's a new calendar year but that thought isn't close to comforting. Is this happening to anyone else? EDIT: I run a lot of websites and the ratios of pageviews are about the same this month to last month but just to be clear the eCPM I posted is for 20 websites in a variety of niches, it doesn't accurately depict any one domain.

  After upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 11.04, my gnome (Desktop) is completely messed up. Because I was hesitant to remove all the packages that were on y desktop. I chose to keep all the dependent files during my upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04. After the upgrade my GUI is simply not working. I think it's because of the conflicting files that I choose to keep while upgrading. I can launch nautilus manually,but still I don't have access to any of the menus available in ubuntu. Is there a way I can upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 and restore my GUI. I tried to upgrade using aptitude, but it doesn't detect the latest ubuntu release, is there a way I can specify where to find the latest release as well get my GUI back ?

  I am not sure my title fully explains what I mean. I thought this might be an interesting question. If I had a set of keywords, broken with a dash or 2, will search engines consider the dashed split keyword as maybe a full keyword? Say I have a site that sort of breaks words down, like the dictionary sites do. So a keyword for that page, might end up in the page, and / or the URL, as broken by dashes. Key-word = keyword Co-op-er-at-ive = cooperative Pho-to-gra-phy = Photography www.example.com/key-word/ www.example.com/co-op-er-at-ive/ www.example.com/pho-to-gra-phy/ I know search engines will consider a dash (at least Google) as a space, and understand it as multiple words. But in the English language, a dash can also break a word down (at least I think it can, can't it?), so will search engines also take this into consideration? I did a 'little' research, I Googled some words and placed random dashes, and it returned the words I searched for, but this could be considered a typo from the user on Google's search end, so really I am wondering if I can purposely put a dash in a keyword, and have the search engine spiders still catch that keyword as the real word without dashes? I've done a little Googling and looking here on Stackoverflow, but everything comes down to dashes for multiple words, not really the specific thing I'm trying to figure out. Hopefully that makes sense, I am not an expert in SEO, yet, but get the basics and have been playing, and this is just really a random question to satisfy my knowledge of playing :P

  I am looking for advice how to architect licensing for a .NET library. I am not asking for tool/service recommendations or something like that. My library can be used in a regular desktop application, in an ASP.NET solution. And now Azure services come into play. Currently, for desktop applications the library checks if the application and company names from the version history are the same as the names the key was generated for. In other cases the library compares hardware IDs. Now there are problems: an Azure-enabled web-application can be run on different hardware each time (AFAIK) sometimes the hardware ID for the same hardware changes unexpectedly checking the hardware ID or version info might not be allowed in some circumstances (shared hosting for example) So, I am thinking about what approach I can take to architect a licensing scheme that: is friendly to customers (I do not try to fight piracy, but I do want to warn the customer if he uses the library on more servers than he paid for) can be used when there is no internet connection can be used on shared hosting What would you recommend?
