• Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

• Set up Trendnet TEW-638APB Access point on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have a computer running Ubuntu 14.04, it has 2 Ethernet ports. I would like to set up this computer so that the internet comes in on one of the ports and is then shared through the other port with the Trendnet wireless access point that my other devices would connect to and use the internet. I have looked online for information on setting this up but have not been able to find anything. If someone could point me to a guide that would help me or just tell me how to do this in an answer I would really appreciate it. please help me to solve this problem

• New version: Sun Rack II capacity calculator

  A new release of the Sun Rack II capacity calculator is available on eSTEP portal. The tool calculates all the data necessary (power requirements, BTU, number of rack units, needed power outlets etc.) while inserting the many different kind of HW equipment in aSun Rack II cabinet (version 1000 and 1200). It takes into consideration most of the available servers, storage devices, tapes, and Netra products. There are also a couple of third party products which are taken into account. • Deploying Asp.net MVC web application [migrated]

  I have been trying to find a neat tutorial, guide or step by step instructions for deploying an Asp.net MVC3 webapp but have found nothing so far. Everyone talks about his version of the stroy and different type of MVC versions. Right now, I have build a simple Asp.net MVC web application which i need to deploy on my shared hosting account. In a very simple manner, I need to know which files should i copy. Do i upload everything in my webproject directory to the server including the controller directory, views, models, content and bin directory ?. What about the Global.asax, web.config, packages.config, myapp.publish.xml. In short, I have no idea which files should be uploaded and which should be not. I am sure of one thing that i need few(MVC and Razor dlls) following dlls in bin directory. Just treat me as someone who has never deployed any website NOTE:- I don't have VS SP1 installed and it doesn't install either. Basically i need a manual procedure.

• Wireless always disconnect

  I upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 for Ubuntu 12.04. I have a Emachines E625 With Ubuntu 12.04 my wireless always disconnects every 10 sec. It didn't do that with 10.10. • Xubuntu all Icons disappeared

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04.1 with kernel Xen4.1-amd64 and the following problem is mine: Nearly all icons have been replaced by the default "no icon available"-icon, even on the login screen and the all icons in software like e.g. Firefox and the icons I manually assigned to launchers, too. Changing the icon theme does not seem to affect this. The only icons that did not disappear are: LibreOffice, gThumb, Simplescan, Ristretto and in the XFCE menu office, tools and graphics. How could I bring the icons back? EDIT: When I tried to use Ristretto the following error showed up: Could not load image-loader module /usr/lib/x68_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.12.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so Unable to open shared-object-file I/O error (Had to translate this to English.)

• copy files to Nexus 4 on Kubuntu (13.04)

  I know, this has been asked a few times already but I'm still having troubles to get files copied my new Nexus 4 phone mounted on my Kubuntu 13.04 machine. I followed the guide at: http://www.pocketables.com/2013/03/how-to-mount-the-lg-nexus-4-as-a-usb-drive-in-linux.html I would only get: $ cp -r /mnt/media/Albums/A\ Perfect\ Circle\ -\ Thirteenth\ Step/ . cp: accessing ‘.’: Transport endpoint is not connected reg@regDesktopHome:/media/nexus4/Internal storage/Music$ ls -l but thereafter , mount still shows it mounted: mtpfs on /media/nexus4 type fuse.mtpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other) What's going on here?   I'm planning on leaving my current job because we're locked into using Blub, with an enterprise Blub framework and a Blub-level web server, on mediocre shared hosting. My coworkers are friendly and my boss is an average small business owner - I want to leave entirely because of the technical reasons. I feel like being soaked in Blub is bad for my brain and making me a worse programmer. When I leave, how can I explain this to my boss and coworkers? How can I phrase my complaints about Blub productively? What kind of warning can I and should I leave for my successor in documentation? (trying to make sure I meet the standards)

• Coherence Query Performance in Large Clusters

  Large clusters (measured in terms of the number of storage-enabled members participating in the largest cache services) may introduce challenges when issuing queries. There is no particular cluster size threshold for this, rather a gradually increasing tendency for issues to arise. The most obvious challenges are that a client's perceived query latency will be determined by the slowest responder (more likely to be a factor in larger clusters) as well as the fact that adding additional cache servers will not increase query throughput if the query processing is not compute-bound (which would generally be the case for most indexed queries). If the data set can take advantage of the partition affinity features of Coherence, then the application can use a PartitionedFilter to target a query to a single server (using partition affinity to ensure that all data is in a single partition). If this can not be done, then avoiding an excessive number of cache server JVMs will help, as will ensuring that each cache server has sufficient CPU resources available and is also properly configured to minimize GC pauses (the most common cause of a slow-responding cache server).

• Run server side script

  I'm in the process of deploying my first website which is written is ASP.NET. I need to run a server side script at set intervals during the day which updates a database even if there is nobody using the site. I was led to believe that using Windows task scheduler would be the best option but now I've joined a hosting company the layout is not really how I was expecting. It's a shared hosting with basic FTP and no apparent built in task scheduler. The hosting company support is not very good and haven't been able to advise how I could do this so hoped to get help here on options before I consider changing company. [The hosting company starts with 1 and ends with 1 :)]

  We are planning to build a Web Based School/College ERP. The main problem we face is Hardware support. Since it is Web Based, it is not possible to implement Biometrics. But most of our clients do ask for Biometrics. I hope we need to use a desktop application to do that. Can you please give some suggestions for this? Another thing is, here we don't have stable internet connection. We frequently face disconnection. This is another problem for Web Based CRM. In HTML5 there is a feature called Offline storage. Is it possible to use this feature for such dynamic ERP? For example, let's say we need to enter marks for the students. Net got disconnected. Is it possible to use HTML5 offline feature to save the marks offline and upload them when we got connection back?

• root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?

  When installing Ubuntu 12.10 for the first time, I made sure /home had it's own partition, gave it about 185GB, and gave root ~10GB. Now root is almost full after a few days and I've noticed that root is as big as /home and some additional MB from some actual root files. Note that I deleted some unused files in /home to make sure it really affects how much space is used in root, and it clearly does. (checked in gparted) I've also made sure the files I am talking about are actually in /home/myname/ and not just in root's home. df -h spits out this information: df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb2 9.2G 7.9G 908M 90% / udev 3.9G 12K 3.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 1.6G 932K 1.6G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 3.9G 6.4M 3.9G 1% /run/shm none 100M 112K 100M 1% /run/user /dev/sdb3 184G 4.9G 170G 3% /home /dev/sdb4 729G 87G 642G 12% /media/mave/Storage I cut out my windows partitions as I don't see any relevance. • File system layout for multiple build targets

  I am seeking some ideas for how to build and install software with some parameters. These including target OS, target platform CPU details, debugging variant, etc. Some parts of the install are shared, such as documentation and many platform independent files, others are not, such as 64 and 32 bit libraries when these are separated and not together in a multi-arch library. On big networked platforms one often has multiple computers sharing some large server space, so there is actually cause to have even Windows and Unix binaries on the same disk. My product has already fixed an install philosophy of $INSTALL_ROOT/genericname/version/ so that multiple versions can coexist. The question is: how to manage the layout of all the other stuff?

• Grub can't find device on boot resulting in Grub Rescue

  So I have 2 hard drives a HDD 320GB and a SSD 20GB. Before I had Windows 7 on the HDD and Ubuntu on the SSD but wanted to get rid of windows and reinstall a clean Ubuntu on the SSD then use the HDD for storage. So I deleted everything from the HDD and set up the SSD with 18GB ext4 and 2GB Swap and installed Ubuntu on the 18GB ext4. Though now when I boot up I get "Error: No such device Grub Rescue" I have a live USB and I ran the Boot Repair following these instructions - grub rescue after install of Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot) - it says successful though still have the same problem. • Network strange problem

  I have a CPanel server with 5 IPs and a few domains. During night, access to main domain through HTTP return 324 no response many times. After several refresh it comes but many assets won't load and return 324. Using HTTPS is fine. During day HTTP is also fine. But another domain on that very sever works fine all the day through HTTP. The server DNS are ns1 and ns2 of the first domain. Second domain is on the shared IP and first domain has a dedicated IP. I cant resolve the problem :( and appreciate any help so much!

• Older PHP v/s newer PHP version [closed]

  My company is building a website with database. Programmer's used PHP 5.0. My Service Provider (shared) in the meantime upgraded to PHP 5.3.0. Fixes have been on going and seem endless... Do I move to VPS and install older PHP or should we rebuild with newer PHP? When working remotely with programers what is the protocol regarding delivery of all code? • Ad-hoc network(hot spot created) not detected by android phone

  I created a hot spot via network wireless use as hotspot. Other laptops successfully detected the hot-spot,could connect and use it without any problem. But no android phone could detect it.! I tried with many android phones but none could.(I found out that even an ad-hoc created in windows is not detected by any phone) So is there anything wrong i am doing(rather i am not doing anything actually other than clicking on the "use as hotspt" button..but still..)? or is that the network cannot be shared with phones? and if not,how can i share it with phones?
