• Is "watermarking" code with random trailing whitespace a good way to detect plagiarism?

  Consider this: int f(int x) { return 2 * x * x; } and this int squareAndDouble(int y) { return 2*y*y; } If you found these in independent bodies of code, you might give the two programmers the benefit of the doubt and assume they came up with more-or-less the same function independently. But look at the whitespace at the end of each line of code. Same pattern in both. Surely evidence of copying. On a larger piece of code, correlation of random whitespace at line ends would be irrefutable evidence of a shared origin. Now aside from the obvious weaknesses: e.g. visible or obvious in some editors, easily removed, I was wondering if it was worth deploying something like this in my open source project. My industry has a history of companies ripping off open source projects.

The magic happens when you mix these ingredients together. The same goes for the hottest technologies fast changing how IT impacts our organizations today: cloud, social, mobile, and big data. By themselves they’re pretty good; combining them with a great recipe is what unlocks real transformation power. Choosing the right cloud can be very similar to choosing the right cake. This is where a shared services  platform built on open standards and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is critical. It’s essentially a cloud recipe that calls for not only great ingredients, but also ingredients you can get locally or most likely already have in your kitchen (or IT shop.) Open standards is the best way to deliver a cost effective, durable application integration strategy – regardless of where your apps are deployed. It’s also the best way to build your own cloud applications, or extend the ones you consume from a third party. Just like using standard ingredients and tools you already have in your kitchen, a standards based cloud enables your IT resources to ensure a cloud works easily with other systems. Your IT staff can also make changes using tools they are already familiar with. Or even more ideal, enable business users to actually tailor their experience without having to call upon IT for help at all. This frees IT resources to focus more on developing new innovative services for the organization vs. run and maintain. Carrying the cake analogy forward, you need to add all the ingredients in before you bake it. The same is true with a modern cloud. To harness the full power of cloud, you can’t leave out some of the most important ingredients and just layer them on top later. This is what a lot of our niche competitors have done when it comes to social, mobile, big data and analytics, and other key technologies impacting the way we do business. The transformational power of these technology trends comes from having a strategy from the get-go that combines them into a winning recipe, and delivers them in a unified way. • Configuring Dropbox on Ubuntu server

  I've got a Ubuntu server running on an old laptop. The OS is on a 4GB USB drive and I use a SATA drive attached for storage. Now I wanted to set up Dropbox on this machine. I've got it running using this guide: http://www.byteindia.com/internet/install-dropbox-on-linux/482/. But I haven't synched yet because there won't be enough room in my home dir. My /home is on my 4GB USB since I never use it and all my data is on the 2TB drive mounted in /media/. What is the best way to set this up? Dropbox doesn't support moving the folder in Linux yet. I found a script to move the folder but it seems outdated. Perhaps I can use symlinks in some clever way? Or maybe move my /home folder to my SATA drive? Thanks in advance

• What web oriented language would work best with binary data?

  I want to create a service where people can upload files. However, since file storage costs money, I want to compress the files so they take less space. I would want to write my own compression algorithm, however, PHP doesn't have good ways to handle binary data (which is needed for many compression algorithms). So I wondered, what would be a better language to create such a website in? I have knowledge of PHP (and Javascript, HTML and CSS) but no experience with other things like Ruby, Perl, Python, and other web development languages.

• Trying to run 32bit windows game in wine on 64bit 12.04

  I am trying to run Icewind dale2 from GOG.com in wine on ubuntu 12.04 64bit. I am using the AMD ATI binary blob display driver. Running the file command on /usr/lib32/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2 gives: george@devbox:/usr/lib32/fglrx$ file libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1.2: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped george@devbox:/usr/lib32/fglrx$ So I definetly have 32bit opengl. I am using latest Playonlinux and tried this on wine 1.4 and 1.5... How can I force wine to use my opengl library?

• New HDD formating on Ext4 root permission

  OK people good evening, I have this new 80Gb HDD I want to use it as a backup storage for my actual system (14.04) not a server. I formatted it with Gpart but I just can't write in it, when I search for permissions it tells me that only root users can write/create in it, log on as root user and try to change permissions, and I can't do that either. Long have I searched for an answer, looking everywhere but not to find any, is there a way to format it and use it with my user permission? Don't want it on NTFS, is there a way?, I have searched in these forums but there’s only an answer to format it in NTFS, so please. Thank you in advance.

• Remove Ubuntu 11.10 from Dual Boot Windows XP without XP CD?

  I installed Ubuntu on a old Windows XP computer using Dual Boot, i have no XP Cd and desperately need to remove it! EasyBCD does not work on windows XP, iF I just delete the Ubuntu partition all hell breaks loose and i have to reinstall ubuntu to get my XP back. Please help me i am only 12 and i have made a stupid error on my mum and dads computer and will get into serious trouble if i dont fix it soon!. Extra Information: I use the gnu boot loader to choose my operating system, but my mum and dad need my help to open a word document, they have only just grasped double clicking! I installed it off a cd that i made, the computer is 64-bit AMD Athlon with one 160gb hard drive, 512mb ram and a Sis mirage2 128mb shared video card. Its a COMPAQ presario.

• Why is my content database so large?

  If your SharePoint site collection hasn't grown, but your content database has, the most likely culprit is versioning.  If a list -- or worse, a library -- has versioning enabled, the default is to keep every single one.  That means that every time someone edits and checks in a document, its storage footprint increases by the size of the document (and probably a little more).The solution?  It could be a bit painful, but you'll need to go back into each library and restrict the number of versions to keep (three is sufficient for most uses, but your needs may vary).  I suggest keeping only major versions as well, since minor versions are really just stopping points on the way to a published document.Of course if you have a real business need to keep all those versions around, then you'll want to look into an archiving solution that will take the old versions out of the content database but still make them available if necessary.

• Empathy auto accept group chat invite

  I'm using empathy 2.34.0 as chat client for account hosted on Google app (server talk.google.com). I'm happy with the features that empathy provides and integration with Google chat, however for group chat when the request is received I need to click on "join" button showed in popup to get started. This makes sense but I would to know if there is any way to automatically join the chat room without clicking the "join" button as I use it only with trusted uses. Besides the messages shared after the invite request and before my entry to chat room is not accessible to me. I looked around the empathy settings but couldn't find anything useful, wondering if I can get some help from here. Thanks.

  I have never used Joomla before, so this might be a noobish question. I have tried searching, but haven't found anything relevant. I'm helping someone update & migrate their old website, built on the Joomla framework. Currently it is running on Joomla 1.5.8 which is an ancient version. I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to atleast 2.5 I have already taken the database backup. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• Unable to connect to internet

  I just upgraded to 12.10. Everything appears to go well but I am unable to connect to the Internet. The LAN is fine and I can view my shared files but no e-mail or access to web pages. My other computer which is running 12.04 or older seems to connect fine. I only upgraded one to make sure things would be ok. I am currently connecting fine with a wireless Windows laptop.
