Twinview broken on upgrade to ubuntu 10.10

I have been on 9.10 for over a year on the grounds that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, I had a spare weekend and figured it was probably about time... I performed an upgrade to 10.4, and everything seemed to proceed smoothly, so I took the plunge and went for 10.10. Disaster. My twinview Nvidia display which had been working perfectly is now broken. On boot everything seems fine, but when X starts and the second monitor springs into life the primary winks out and switches off - almost as if its been put into an unsupported display mode. The system seems to think there's a second monitor - the nvidia logo is split across the two screens, but it can't seem to start. Things I've tried: Swapping the monitors (one is older than the other, and its definitely the port not the actual monitor) Rolling back to an old Xorg conf from prior to the upgrade Installing a non-beta driver direct from Nvidia (this seems to start both monitors but then apparently stops boot and causes the second display to 'wink'. Twinview seems non-functional, both displays are mirrors) Disabling EDID Disabling twinview, logging in and attempting to use the Nvidia config to re-detect the monitors (second monitor is falsely detected and won't go higher than 1024x768. Selecting 'apply' causes one screen to go blank and the other to display garbage) googling for about 5 hours looking for similar problems, none of the offered solutions seemed to work I'm at a loss, and it is looking very much like I'm going to have to go through a time consuming reinstall to downgrade back to the working 10.4. Any thoughts?

Deploying my first website!

I have built a data driven website - an asp.net website, using the entity framework. In my solution I have 4 projects - the web application PresentationLayer, and 3 class libraries - Data Layer, Business and Common Layer. In one of these libraries, Common Layer I have my Model (MyModel.edmx). I have always tested my application on Cassini - Asp.Net Development Server. I have never touched IIS in my life. I bought a domain and hosting on go daddy. My logic tells me to grab my four folders (1 for each layer) and simply move them to the root folder. But I know I'm wrong since then the home page would be mywebsite.org/presentationlayer/default.aspx and second of all I start getting a bunch of errors where files do not load or they are not found. I also know that I need to manage the web.config but I don't have any experience where to start. I'm not sure if this is a problem but I also have a web service included in my presentation layer.

My Kids and Ear Infection

My Kids and Ear Infection is becoming a weekly issue. That is why I wanted to start this blog to talk about my experience and more important hear from other parents opinions and experience. Well, I will start with my twins, they are about 3yrs old. started to go to day care about three months ago. since they started with the daycare, they started getting exposed to germs and viruses and the ear infection started too. every few weeks they have ear infection. They take turns or some times they both get ear infection at the same time. To be more accurate, one of them is more suseptive to the ear infection. We ended up going through the specialest that suggested an ear tube operation and also remove the adenoid tissue. His opinion was that will stop the fluid from staying in his inner ear and will eleminate the ear infedction. To make the long story short for now. the ear infection never stoped. in addtion to the ear infection, now the tube is stuck and stoped working, the tube is moved and going to fall, as the doctor said. the problems do not stop. they keep adding up. and now my second son is going to need ear tube if he gets ear infection again. what should I do?

Nifty default controls prevent the rest of my game from rendering

I've been trying to add a basic HUD to my 2D LWJGL game using nifty gui, and while I've been successful in rendering panels and static text on top of the game, using the built-in nifty controls (e.g. an editable text field) causes the rest of my game to not render. The strange part is that I don't even have to render the gui control, merely declaring it appears to cause this problem. F# Application Entry Point

Up to now I have been looking at F# for modular solutions, but have never considered writing an end to end application. Today I was wondering how one would even start to write an end to end application and realized that I didn’t even know where the entry point is for an F# application. After browsing MSDN a bit I got a basic example of a F# application with an entry point [<EntryPoint>] let main args = printfn "Arguments passed to function : %A" args // Return 0. This indicates success. 0 Pretty simple stuff… but what happens when you have a few modules in a program – so I created a F# project with two modules and a main module as illustrated in the image below… When I try to compile my program I get a build error… A function labeled with the 'EntryPointAttribute' attribute must be the last declaration in the last file in the compilation sequence, and can only be used when compiling to a .exe… What does this mean? After some more reading I discovered that the Program.fs needs to be the last file in the F# application – the order of the files in a F# solution are important. How do I move a source file up or down? I tried dragging the Program.fs file below ModuleB.fs but it wouldn’t allow me to. Then I thought to right click on a source file and got the following menu. Wala… to move the source file to the bottom of the solution you can select the “Move Up” or “Move Down” option. Now that I got this right I decided to put some code in ModuleA & ModuleB and I have the start of a basic application structure. Importing an existing project into Git

Background During the course of developing our site (ASP.NET), we discovered that our existing source control (SourceGear Vault) wasn't working for us. So, we decided to migrate to Git. The translation has been less than smooth though. Our site is broken up into three environments DEV, QA, and PROD. For tho most part, DEV and the source control repo have been in sync with each other. There is one branch in the repo, if a page was going to be moved up to QA then the file was moved manually, same thing with stuff that was ready for PROD. So, our current QA and PROD environments do not correspond to any particular commit in the master branch. Clarification: The QA and PROD branches are not currently, nor have they ever been in source control. The Question How do I move QA and PROD into Git? Should I forget about the history we've maintained up to this point and start over with a new repo? I could start with everything on PROD, then make a branch and pull in everything from QA, and then make another branch off of that with DEV. That way not only will the branches reflect the differences in the environments, they'll be in the right order chronologically with the newest commits in the DEV branch. What I've tried so far I thought about creating a QA branch off of the current master and using robocopy to make the working folder look like the current QA environment. This doesn't work because the new commit from QA will remove new files from DEV and that will remove them when we merge up, I suspect there will be similar problems if I started QA at an earlier (though not exact) commit from DEV.

Is Version control with GIT useful to work in small projects fon an individual developer? [closed]

I work as website developer. I develop with Drupal CSM. I have a drupal base installation which has some settings which are sort of default for all my proyects. This drupal installation is my drupal-base folder Every time I start a new project I just duplicate the `drupal-base- folder and start coding the new features I need for the new proyect. The problem is that sometimes I work in more than one projects at the same time and I get a new feature in one of the project that I'd like to commit to my drupal base installation and also to the other projects. Then keeping the sync of all this is nightmare. I thought that Version Control with GIT could help me with this and I went into a tutorial about it. But now I'm not sure if this will be usefull for me. Then my question is: I think that GIT is just usefull for big projects where a team is working all together in the same files. But it is not usefull to work in small and individual projects. Am I right?

Back in Town and Ready for New Beginnings

I flew into St. Louis and then rented a car and drove over 12,000 miles. I just dropped the rental off last night. Ubuntu 12.10 Unity & Gnome Shell problems

I'm experiencing some problems since I decided to upgrade Ubuntu to 12.10 version two days ago. Firstly, I cannot select the Unity environment I previously used on 12.04 without opening the terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T and typing setsid unity. When I select the Unity environment on the account page when I start the computer, it automatically switch back to Gnome and launch my session. I tried to set back Unity using the setsid unity tip, and it worked fine. But after few minutes, everything freeze and I cannot control anything anymore. The only option left is to press the Power button of my Asus EeePC and switch everything off. Question 1 : What can I do to get my Unity environment back on 12.10 from the start, without using the terminal every time? What should I do to prevent the all system to freeze once done? Secondly, and since I cannot use Unity for new, I'm using an other interface, GNOME Shell. What's bothering me is that the Activities bar (let's call it like that, 'cause I don't know the proper name) and the Internet bar (or any bar from any other window) cannot merge into one another, reducing the display of the screen I'm actually using to peanuts! Question 2 : Is there a way to merge those two bars? Or is there a way to hide the Activities bar when I'm not using it like on Unity environment?

Diving into a computer science career [closed]

Well first I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my question. I'll give you some background. I graduated two years ago from a local UC in my state with a degree in cognitive psychology and worked in a neuroscience lab. During this time I was exposed to some light Matlab programming and other programming tidbits, but before this I had some basic understanding of programming. My father worked IT for a company when I was younger so I picked up his books and took learned things along the way growing up. Naturally I'm an inquisitive person, constantly learning, love challenges, and have had exposure to some languages. Yet at this point I was fully pursue it as a career and always had this in the back of my head. Where do I start? I'm 25 and feel like I still have time to make a switch. I've immersed myself in the terminal/command prompt to start, but which language do I focus on? I've read the A+ book and planning to take on the exam, then the networking exam, but I want to deal with more programming, development, and troubleshooting. I understand to get involved in open source, but where? I took the next step and got a small IT assistant job, but doesn't really deal with programming, development, just troubling shooting and small network issues. Thank you!

Asus A8V overcurrent

This is not as much as a question as it is a note to those out there that upgrade their motherboards with better processors and the like. Here's my story. Recently I upgraded my processor. System specifications: • Asus A8V Deluxe • 4GB RAM • ATI Radeon 3870 AGP graphics card (I believe that's it) Anyway, I decided to put a dual core Opteron 180 in this rig, but the problem was that I needed to update the BIOS to V-1017, and not knowing the consequences, I went up to the Asus site and got the newest, the latest and the greatest, 1018.002 thinking that it was the best for this board, however it wasn't. I used the Asus EXFlash, which makes life a lot easier, flashed the BIOS and all of a sudden I start getting this message: USB overcurrent protection, system shutting down in 15 seconds to protect your system. WELL SHIT... This is a new one on me... I read the blogs, all the posts on this thing, and did all that everyone else did to correct the problem, but nothing helped. So i decided to start from square one, went back to Asus and looked at the BIOS download... OMG... IT WAS A BETA. So, I downloaded the update that was suggested 1017< and installed it and wouldn't you know, it took care of the problem, no more USB overcurrent protection, no more crashing. I write this today to let you all know about this, just in case you have an issue such as this. Well there you all go. Fly safe and eat your vegetables.

SD Card only mounted after a reboot

Hi everyone. I have a Kingston 2GB MicroSD and I plug it in via an inconix MicroSD Adapter to the internal card reader of my Samsung N210 Netbook with Ubuntu 10.10, but it doesn't show up. Only if I reboot the system when the card's plugged in it shows up. Why does it need a reboot for mounting? sudo fdisk -l gives the output below. But I can only see the drive when I reboot the computer while the card's plugged. Why does my mic boost automatically go to 100 on every boot?

When my computer turns on, it automatically sets the "mic boost" sound setting to 100. This causes a loud static sound in my speakers. I can manually go to alsamixer and turn the mic boost down manually, but I would prefer it if I didn't have to do this every time I turn the computer on. I've tried running sudo alsactl store after fixing the settings, and this does save them, but I have to run sudo alsactl restore to restore the settings. This means that I have to manually fix the sound every time I start the computer anyway, so it isn't really a fix. I tried putting sudo alsactl restore in my startup programs, but that didn't seem to fix anything. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, but I started having this problem before upgrading from 11.10. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop. I'm not really sure what made it start; it seemed like I just started having the problem randomly one day. Any help would be appreciated! not being able to access any sudo function on my pc

Hi, I am not being to access any functions in my desktop and I don't have an OS besides Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Linux and I am new to ubuntu. I think I rebooted my computer thinking that Google Chrome crashed. I opened Google Chrome but it showed opening message but never opened so I restarted my computer. and when my system was loading ('i was playing with keyboard dont know what I typed') and when by ubutnu loaded, I was unable to access anything some of characteristics are listed below I cannot hear any sound I cannot access wired ethernet connection on the right corner where I usually enable to access interne and I have no internet. There is no local apache server either. when ever I try to start apacer I get setuid must be root or something. When I type sudo then I get message setuid must be root. I cannot access orther external storage devices like pendrive and portable hard drive and cannot mount my other drives with FAT32 filesystem. When I try to start my apache webserver with out typing sudo then I get message cannnot open socket or something like it. EDIT:: i remember also doing command chown -R www-data / earlier and got error message EDIT:: and i cannot shutdown my computer, it only logs off

I have rocks orbiting moons, moons orbiting planets, planets orbiting suns, and suns orbiting black holes, and the current system could have many many layers of orbitage. the position of any object is a function of time and relative to the object it orbits. (so far so good). now I want to know for a given 2 objects(A,B), a start time and a speed, how can I work out the when and where to go. I can work out where A and B is given a time. so i just need. 1: direction to travel in from A to B(remember B is moving(not in a straight line)) 2: Time to get to b in a straight line. travel must be in a straight line with the shortest possible distance. as an extension to this question, how will i know if its better to wait, EG is it faster to stay on object A and wait for a hour when the objects may be closer, than to set off from A to B at the start. Cheers, it hurt my brain.

Interesting fault attempting to install Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 OR 13.10 on MSI GS70 2OD-001US

Attempting to install Ubuntu on an MSI GS70 2OD-001US notebook pre-installed with Windows 8. For the record this is what I have attempted: All cases were attempted with Ubuntu 12.0.4.3 AND 13.10 images via USB drives Case 1 - Attempt no changes and simply boot from USB Result: It seems to want to work initially. The Ubuntu logo pops up and the dots start moving. After a few seconds the dots freeze and this screen is shown: http://i.imgur.com/C7pyMRk.jpg Case 2 - Start playing with BIOS - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - In BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting LEGACY Result: Brought to a black screen with a - blinking at me. Case 3 - Alternating BIOS settings - In Windows turning off fast boot - In BIOS turning off Secure boot - in BIOS turning off UEFI and selecting UEFI with CSM Result: Brought to a black screen no other indication of change. It's pretty frustrating to feel locked out of a laptop that I have paid good money for, I'm sure I am not alone in that case. It does however appear that there has been some success, so I am hopeful that someone might be able to help me. FYI: Dual booting is not necessary for me, if that helps at all... I'm not sure if this is a reasonable option, but if I completely wipe clean the hdds, no particle of Windows at all, would this still be a problem? Also would opening up the laptop and replacing the HDDS with brand new ones be a solution as well? Thanks for any input or suggestions.

android shut-down errors / thread problems

Im guessing Something in my surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) is wrong, or maybe Im not ending the tread in the right place. Background: 3 of 9 Barcode Alphabet A simple syntax for 3 of 9 bar codes What is the formula behind the alphabet and digits in a 3 of 9 bar code? For example, ASCII has a relatively clear arrangement. Numbers start at 33, capitals at 65, lowercase at 97. From these starting points you can infer the ASCII code for any number or letter. The start point for each range is also a multiple of 32 + 1. Bar codes seem random and lacking sequence. If we use the syntax from the second link, this is the first six characters in 3 of 9: A 100-01 B 010-01 C 110-00 D 001-01 E 101-00 F 011-00 I see no pattern here; what is it? I'm as much interested in the designer's intended pattern behind these as I am in someone devising an algorithm of their own that can give you the above code for a given character based on its sequence. I struggled with where to put this question; is it history, computer science, information science? I chose Programmers because a StackExchange search had the most barcode hits here, and because I wanted to specifically relate it to ASCII to explain what sort of formula/explanation I'm looking for.

How to mount drive in /media/userName/ like nautilus do using udisks

As of my current installation of Ubuntu 13.10 Unity, when i click on a drive in nautilus it get mounted in /media/username/mountedDrive i read that nautilus use udisks to do that. OpenXML error “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.”

From time to time I ear some people saying their new web application supports data export to Excel format. So far so good … but they don’t tell the all story … in fact almost all the times what is happening is they are exporting data to a Comma-Separated file or simply exporting GridView rendered HTML to an xls file. Ok … it works but it’s not something I would be proud of. So … yesterday I decided to take a look at the Office Open XML File Formats Specification (Microsoft Office 2007+ format) based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. I start by installing Open XML SDK 2.0 for Microsoft Office and playing with some samples. Then I decided to try it on a more complex web application and the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” message start happening. Google show us that many people suffer from the same and it seems there are many reasons that can trigger this message. Some are related to the process itself, others with encodings or even styling. Well, none solved my problem and I had to dig … well not that much, I simply change the output file extension to zip and extract the zip content. Then I did the same to the output file from my first sample, compare both zip contents with SourceGear DiffMerge and found that my problem was Culture related. Yes, my complex application sets the Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture to a non-English culture. For sample purposes I was simply using the ToString method to convert numbers and dates to a string representation but forgot that XML is culture invariant and thus using a decimal separator other than “.” will result in a deserialization problem. I solve the “file is corrupt and cannot be opened.” by using Convert.ToString(object, CultureInfo.InvariantCulture) method instead of the ToString method. Hope this can help someone.

Sub-systems in game engines

So here's the problem- I'm writing my own engine library, and it works fine with stuff like menus and the actual game screen. The thing is, I can't really figure out how to integrate something like an intro or dialogue preceding certain levels into this system. Let's look at another example- say I have a game-specific engine which gets a Level object and runs it. Engine would have its own collision and physics system, all hard coded. Now, what if at some point in a level, I want the player to enter a mini-game with different rules? How do I morph the Engine class to support these sub-systems without having to deal with their code all the time (as in: if(regular game) ... else if(mini game) ...)? And what if I want an intro animation at the start of a level, and I want the player to be able to assume control of his character once the animation ends, do I implement the animation into the Engine class itself? Or maybe I need to run another class, CutScene, and when it ends, it calls Engine and starts the level? What if I want to add a dialogue system, where at the start of each level there's a short dialogue and the player can't control his character, and once it ends, he can? Would I then run the dialogue code inside the Engine code? Maybe these sub-systems should all be scripted? I don't know anything about scripting, is it necessary for this kind of situation? Any help would be appreciated.
