• Responsive Design: Which Framework Should I Use? CSS3 & HTML5

  I've been looking for a suitable set of HTML5/CSS3 foundation files to start new projects on. I started off piecing together my own files, but I believe I might be better served in finding a solid and fairly compatible(with me) CSS3/HTML5 framework and then tweaking certain things that may not best suit my own process. I'd love to find something that is responsive and that includes aspects focusing on layout, type(hor and vert baselines), form and interface components, cross-browser issues, and preferably built on something other than a just imple css reset, but that does include rebuilding elements consistently across browsers for a clean work slate. Extra features like polyfills or others area great, as is good documentation and examples. So far, off the top of my head I know of, Skeleton 1140 Grid 320 & Up (plus BP) HTML5 Boilerplate 2.0 and Mobile Inuit.css Less Framework Fluir Perkins.Less A few WP themes Are there any great one I don't know about? I work a lot in WP, and something that is easily incorporated (but also stand alone) is ideal. Plugins and wide set feature while maintaining the ability to cut it down when needed(flexibility) is also a big plus, and in par with a faster learning, since I want to start using whatever I find immediately . What are some of the better options you guys might be able to recommend? Systems or scripts, plugins, and other related tools are also welcome, Thanks!

• How do you maintain focus when a particular aspect of programming takes 10+ seconds to complete?

  I have a very difficult time focusing on what I'm doing (programming-wise) when something (compilation, startup time, etc.) takes more than just a few seconds. Anecdotally it seems that threshold is about 10 seconds (and I recall reading about study that said the same thing, though I can't find it now). So what typically happens is I make a change and then run the program to test it. That takes about 30 seconds, so I start reading something else, and before I know it 20 minutes have passed, and then it takes (if I'm lucky!) another 10+ minutes to deal with the context switch to getting back into programming. It's not an exaggeration to say that some things that should take me minutes literally take hours to complete. I'm very curious about what other programmers do to combat this tendency (or if I'm unique and they don't have this tendency?). Suggestions of any type at all are welcome - anything from "sit on your hands after hitting the compile button", to mental tricks, to "if it takes 30 seconds to start up something to test a change, then something's wrong with your development process!"

• tunneling x11vnc through ssh on a non standard port to ubuntu computer tightvnc

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer. • Genetic Algorithm new generation exponentially increasing

  I'm programming Genetic Algorithm in C++ and after searching all kind of ways of doing GA'a operators (selection, crossover, mutation) I came up with a doubt. Let's say I have an initial population of 500. My selection will consist in getting the top 20% of 500(based on best fitness). So I get 100 individuals to mate. When I do the crossover I'll get 2 children where both together have 50% of surviving. So far so good. I start the mutation, and everything's ok.. Now when I start choosing the Next generation, I see that I have a big number of children (in this case, 4950 if you wanna know). Now the thing is, every time I run GA, if I send all the children to the next generation, the number of individuals per generation will increase exponentially. So there must be a way of choosing the children to fulfill a new generation without getting out of this range of the initial population. What I'm asking here is if there is anyway of choosing the children to fill the new generations OR should I choose somehow (and maybe reduce) the parents to mate so I don't get so many children in the end.   I am fresh for Ubuntu and Linux in general. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and stuck trying to setup correct resolution for my LCD display. The native resolution for the LCD is 1920x1080 here is the output from xrandr: $xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 720, maximum 4096 x 4096 LVDS1 connected 1280x720+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1280x720 60.0*+ 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) Then I create new modeline: $ cvt 1920 1080 60 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync So far so good. then I create new mode using xrandr: $ xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync But for some reason that new mode was created for VGA (VGA1) output instead of LCD output (LVDS1): $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 720, maximum 4096 x 4096 LVDS1 connected 1280x720+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1280x720 60.0*+ 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1920x1080_60.00 (0xbc) 173.0MHz <---------- ????!!!!!! h: width 1920 start 2048 end 2248 total 2576 skew 0 clock 67.2KHz v: height 1080 start 1083 end 1088 total 1120 clock 60.0Hz So, if I try to add mode to LVDS1, I get an error: $ xrandr --addmode LVDS1 "1920x1080_60.00" X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 18 (RRAddOutputMode) Serial number of failed request: 25 Current serial number in output stream: 26 Adding that new mode to VGA1 works fine, but I don't use that VGA1 output.

• Oops! installer misses a lib during OIF 11g install under some conditions

  If you installed OIF 11g on OEL 6.2 64bit and passed all the interesting gotchas but got stumped by this error in the WLS admin logs, and Enterprise Manager refuses to start correctly after what appeared to be a full successful install and configuration:  ...  <User defined listener oracle.sysman.eml.app.ContextInitializer failed: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HTTPClient/ProtocolNotSuppException. java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HTTPClient/ProtocolNotSuppException     at oracle.sysman.eml.app.ContextInitializer.contextInitialized(ContextInitializer.java:1035) ... The problem is the installer fails to properly place a required jar (http_client.jar) in the appropriate location for your WLS domain.   Assuming you have Oracle DB installed on the same server, just copy the jar to the lib folder in your domain, e.g. if your domain is IDMDomain and middleware install location is /u01/Middleware then cp /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/oui/jlib/http_client.jar \   /u01/Middleware/user_projects/domains/IDMDomain/lib and restart your admin WLS.  Enterprise Manager will start to work.  Hopefully this will save others some time while on the bleeding edge...

• Banshee gapless playback does not work when playing mp3s

  Even though I have gapless playback enabled in Banshee's settings menu, there is a very short pause between songs. • Should CV contain cases where certain party fools me and not pay salary? Is it "holiday" time or not?

  Suppose I am fooled to work in a start-up or a company that has been a very small over a long time, let say 10 years. I work them 3 months and I really enjoy the work -- I learn a lot of new skills such as Haskell, MapReduce, CouchDB and many other little things. Now the firm did not pay any salary: A) I may be unskilled, B) I did not meet some deadline (I don't know because I am not allowed to speak to the boss but I know that I am not getting any payment) or C) I was fooled. Some detail about C I heard that the firm have had similar cases from my friend, "The guy X was there and he said he does not trust the firm at all so he went to other firm". I don't know what the term "trust" mean here, anyway the firm consists of ignorant drop-outs that hires academic people, a bit irony. They hire people from student-organizations and let them work and promise ok -compensation but -- when you start working the co-employer starts all kind of instructions "Do not work so hard, do not work so long, do not work so much" -- it is like he is making sure you do not feel sad when he does not pay any salary (co-employer is an owner in the firm). Anyway, I learnt a ton in the company but it was very inefficient working. I worked only alone, not really working in a "company". Now should by resume contain references to the firm and the guy who did not pay me anything? Or should my resume read that I worked in XYZ -technologies -- but 1 year's NDA -- what can write here? Now I fear that if I put the firm to my resume: they will lie about my input to my next employer. I feel they are very dishonest. On the other hand, I want to make it sure that I have worked over the time. So: Should my CV contain the not-so-good or even awful employers that may be fooling people to work there? I am pretty sure everyone knows the firm and its habbits, circles are small but people are afraid to speak.

  Windows 8 sports a re-imagined desktop and tablet user interface with touch friendly Metro looks. One of the major changes in Windows 8 for a common users  is the lack of start menu, with which we got friended for more than a decade. On Windows 8 we would be missing it. As there is no start menu in Windows 8, the way you shutdown a Windows 8 computer is a bit different. To shutdown using Mouse, you need to hover on the top right edge of the screen to open the hidden menu,  go to "Settings"  tab -> "Power" -> Then choose for "Shut down", "Sleep" or "Restart".  That’s a lot of Mouse movement work and if you are a power user then you may not like to do that. How about shutting down the PC using Keyboard? Here are the two ways to shutdown the PC using keyboard Keyboard shortcuts With the help of keyboard shortcuts you can navigate to Power options of Windows 8. Press Win + C to bring the Settings Charm and use Arrows and Enter keys to navigate to access Shutdown menu. This is one of the easiest way to shutdown the PC without using Mouse. Run Command If you don’t like to go through the Setting menu, you can use the traditional Run commands. Press Win + R to open Run dialog and enter the command shutdown -s -t 0 to immediately shutdown the PC.

• Dual-Boot Problem

  I have a HP laptop that originally had Windows 7 OS on it, I partioned the drive and allocated 100gb (est.) for the ubuntu install. the install went fine i have ubuntu and windows 7 still on the computer. But I can not get the OS boot screen to show ubuntu as an OS. I can while start up pull up the start menu screen via ESC. Key and press F9 for Boot Device Options and get the boot manager screen and it lists... OS boot manager, Ubuntu (Hitachi HTS 543232A7A384), boot from EFI file, and Notebook Hard Drive... I can boot Ubuntu from this screen by selecting Ubuntu. But i would like to make it easier to access. The computer boot is not for myself otherwise it would not be a problem i would remove windows altogether. I would like to make it basically "User Friendly" if that's at all possible and make the OS boot screen show Ubuntu as a bootable OS as well as Windows 7. on the boot selection screen. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated, I've looked to see if i could find the answer and maybe i've overlooked something so here I am. Like i said i need it to be as user friendly as possible and force the user to choose windows 7 or ubuntu not send them into one or the other without them being allowed to choose. I can get any information you might need if necessary but i dont know exactly what you'll need other than what i've given. Ubuntu version is the 13.04 just so you know.

• Unsure about TRIM enabled on my SSD

  I have a SSD OCZ Vertex4 installed on my laptop. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have enable TRIM by adding "discard" to my fstab file. (also added option noatime). I rebooted my Ubuntu and followed These instructions here to test TRIM. The end results of my tempfile was all ffff's, when it should have read all zero's, which is telling me TRIM is not really working or enabled correctly. Did I miss something? Also, will it be a problem if only my /home directory is encrypted. AND if you ask why I have swap on my SSD, it's because I let Ubuntu set up my partition. When I have my SSD, I just wanted to install Ubuntu as fast as possible. =) I've done testing to see at which point it will start to use swap and it took a lot of applications open to finally use swap. I currently have 4 GB of memory. I might shrink this to like 512 MB or 1 GB the most. • Costs/profit of/when starting an indie company

  In short, I want to start a game company. I do not have much coding experience (just basic understanding and ability to write basic programs), any graphics design experience, any audio mixing experience, or whatever else technical. However, I do have a lot of ideas, great analytical skills and a very logical approach to life. I do not have any friends who are even remotely technical (or creative in regards to games for that matter). So now that we've cleared that up, my question is this: how much, minimally, would it cost me to start such a company? I know that a game could be developed in under half a year, which means it would have to operate for half a year prior, and that's assuming that the people working on the first project do their jobs good, don't leave game breaking bugs, a bunch of minor bugs, etc.. So how much would it cost me, and what would be the likely profit in half a year? I'm looking at minimal costs here, as to do it, I would have to sell my current apartment and buy a new, smaller one, pay taxes, and likely move to US/CA/UK to be closer to technologically advanced people (and be able to speak the language of course). EDIT: I'm looking at a small project for starters, not a huge AAA title.

• Vaadin Calendar events not shown if overnight [migrated]

  In my vaadin project there is the possibility to create events that are shown by the calendar. It does works, except when the event is overnight, let's say the night from 23th to 24th, and the calendar shows as only day the 24th. In this case the part of the event that belongs to the 24th is supposed to be shown, but it is not. When I switch to weekly view, the event is shown properly. • Does IE have more strict Javascript parsing than Chrome?

  This is not meant to start a religio-technical browser war - I still prefer Chrome, at least for now, but: Because of a perhaps Chrome-related problem with my web page (see https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?can=2&start=0&num=100&q=&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Iteration%20ReleaseBlock%20Cr%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified&groupby=&sort=&id=161473), I temporarily switched to IE (10) to see if it would also view the time value as invalid. However, I didn't even get to that point - IE stopped me in my tracks before I could get there; but I found that IE was right - it is more particular/precise in validating my code. For example, I got this from IE: SCRIPT5007: The value of the property '$' is null or undefined, not a Function object ...which was referring to this: <script src="/CommonLogin/Scripts/jquery-1.9.1.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> // body sometimes becomes white???? with jquery 1.6.1 $("body").css("background-color", "#405DA7"); < This line is highlighted as the culprit: $("body").css("background-color", "#405DA7"); jQuery is referenced right above it - so why did it consider "$" to be undefined, especially when Chrome had no problem with it...ah! I looked at that location (/CommonLogin/Scripts/) and saw that, sure enough, the version of jQuery there was actually jquery-1.6.2.min.js. I added the updated jQuery file (1.9.1) and it got past this. So now the question is: why does Chrome ignore this? Does it download the referenced version from its own CDN if it can't find it in the place you specify? IE did flag other errs after that, too; so I'm thinking perhaps IE is better at catching lurking problems than, at least, Chrome is. Haven't tested Firefox diesbzg yet.

• I just started a job with Scrum and something seems to be missing. I am new to Scrum

  The code is a complete mess of a combination of classic ASP/ASP.NET. The scrum consist of us patching up the big mess or making additions to it. We are all too busy doing that to start a rewrite so I am wondering.. Where is the part in Scrum where the developers can have the power to say that enough is enough and demand that they are given time to start the big rewrite? We seem in an endless loop of just patching old code with 'Stories'. So things are being run by the non-technical people who seem to have no desire to push for a rewrite because they don't understand how bad the codebase has gotten.. So who is in charge of making this big rewrite change happen? The developers? The Scrum Master? The current strategy is just to find time and do it ourselves without the higher-ups involved since they are mostly to blame for the current mess we are in.. <- insert rant about non-technical people telling technical people what to do here ->.

  I knew that WebLogic had this small ZIP distribution, of only 184M, but what I didn't know was that it is so easy to install it on Linux machines, specially for development purposes, that I thought I had to blog about it. You may want to check this blog, where I found the missing part on this how to, but I'm blogging this again because I wanted to put it in a simpler way, straight to the point. And if you are looking for a how to for Mac, check Arun Gupta's post.  So, here's the step-by-step: 1 - Download the ZIP distribution (don't worry if your system is x86_64)Don't forget to accept the OTN Free Developer License Agreement! 2 - Choose where to install your WebLogic server and your domain, and set as your MW_HOME environment variableI will use /opt/middleware/weblogic for this how to export MW_HOME=/opt/middleware/weblogicMake sure this path exists in your system. 'mydomains' will be used to keep your WebLogic domain. mkdir -p $MW_HOME/mydomain 3 - If you don't have your JAVA_HOME environment variable still configured, do it. Point it to where your JDK is installed. export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/default-java 4 - Unzip the downloaded file into MW_HOME unzip wls1211_dev.zip -d $MW_HOME 5 - Go to that directory and run configure.sh cd $MW_HOME ./configure.sh 6 - Call the setEnvs.sh script . $MW_HOME/wlserver/server/bin/setWLSEnv.sh7 - Create your development domain.   In order to configure the time zone with WebLogic Server, use the following JVM startup command: -Duser.timezone=<timezone> For example, in the java arguments in the admin console at Environments -> Servers -> Servername -> - Server Start tab, configure the startup settings that Node Manager will use to start the particular server. • Silverlight Developer needs ASP.NET MVC Training [on hold]

  With Silverlight on the way out, our company wants to embrace HTML5 and related technologies. Background: Our Silverlight project did everything from generating its own models (or data contracts), sending it over WCF, tracking changes, with a whole deal of back-end code to make the ride smoother, but often also cluttered and more complex. Most of the original developers for this project are gone, and we want to embrace something new for future projects. Having done this very useful MVC Jump Start course at Microsoft Virtual Academy, we are all fired up for the next project. The problem is that we have very little in-depth knowledge of all the many different components. The most important hereof is probably Entity Framework, and (for later) Web API. I suppose the best place to start is at the Microsoft ASP.NET websites. Are there any other suggestions for learning from more experienced developers? I am a senior developer, but my knowledge of ASP.NET MVC (and related) is very limited. PS: We have a project deadline at the end of this month.

• Windows Defender Update KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0)? Killed My Live Discs

  Here's my problem, for those willing to read for about 2 minutes here's the entire story, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/bsod-after-windows-defender-update-kb915597/a4b5fca3-0274-47b4-97c4-61b34c4c4599, for those who want the short version here's what happened. After windows update automatically updated windows defender to kb915597, my computer starting getting bsods on shut down and start up and started experiencing problems withe the usb ports. So I decided to go to the microsoft answers site for help, I know that was probably my first mistake, so I followed their advice and they turned my computer into a large paper weight. Luckily I make physical backups of my c drive every few months and I have one from back in july, so I figured I'd boot up a ubuntu live disc, copy all my files from the past 2 months to a external drive and just copy the backup back to the c drive, that's where I ran into this problem. When I put in either a ubuntu or kubuntu disc, everything goes well, until it finishes the loading bar then when the OS would presumably start up, the computer resets, I've tried with ubuntu, kubuntu and gparted, and only gparted is able to get to the point where it starts up, but even then when I try to access the internet from it, the computer resets, and when I tried to copy the entire C drive partition to a blank external I wasn't able to. So I figured somehow maybe the C drive had something to do with it, so I unplugged the C drive so my computer was just a 2.8 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram, should have had no problem starting a live disc but the problem still continues. After doing some googling around I've found whenever windows gets a update with the title KB915597 it's pretty much the kill switch for windows, I've tried contacting microsoft tech support and even managed to directly contact a software engineer but as soon as I mention KB915597 they all just blew me off. I hope anybody who reads this has any idea how to fix this, I'm going to attempt to install ubuntu or kubuntu to a external drive using the same computer and see what happens now.

  I have a problem that I can't hear any sounds and I don't know where to start. Is that normal ?? I have 2 hardware profiles for sound cards but none of them works when I test the speakers. Where should I start searching ?

• Have Windows Automatically Login Without Entering Your Password

  If you are like me and don't want to have to enter your password each time Windows loads, you can have Windows start up without prompting you to enter a user name or password.  The simple (and BAD) way to do this is to simply not have a password on your user account, but that’s a big security risk and will allow people to easily remote desktop into your computer. So, first set a password on your windows account if you don’t already have one.  Then select Run... from the start menu (or use Windows Key + R to open the Run window) and type control userpasswords2, which will open the user accounts application.   On the Users tab, clear the box for Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use to automatically log into Windows.  That's it.    You may also want to make sure your screen saver is not set to prompt you for a password when it exits either. Now your computer is secure without getting in your way.

• When is the right time to join open source project for programmer?

  Most of the newcomers in programming start with basic projects to start with programming. Most of the C++ progammers spend some time with puzzles and contests but this is not always helpful. Sometimes you've to spend some time on real projects. Starting your own open source project could be a problem in self-learning for newbie cause of lack of mentors and peers who can't look at your code and give suggestions. Open source projects can solve this problem, some projects could be best suited for new programmers. Besides everybody is newbie at some point. So i'll try and make this question a bit from beginners perspective. I tried few questions on stack overflow before asking this like How do i join & Bare minimum you need and how to get involved with open source and what level of programming etc. But this is not helping me when it comes to self-evaluating with skills. How to find that out ? How can i check what it takes to join open source project and am i really that comfortable with huge source code etc. My question is when to consider yourself comfortable joining open source programming ? I mean how will you test yourself that you're ready to take burden of big/small projects of open source ? how will you test yourself to see if you could work with version control/other programmers/tight schedule etc ?
