• Make backup image (.tib/.vhd) as my main operating system?

  My old hard drive is dying so I want to move my Windows 7 operating system to another hard drive. They say cloning using Acronis would do the trick, but for some reason it refuses to work. I also tried EASEUS Todo Backup, but it doesn't work either. Can you recommend some suggestions on how to transfer my operating system? I heard about converting .tib to .vhd and then booting from it, but does that achieve the same effect as cloning?

• Why is it a bad practice to call System.gc?

  After answering to a question about how to force-free objects in Java (the guy was clearing a 1.5GB HashMap) with System.gc(), I've been told it's a bad practice to call System.gc() manually, but the comments seemed mitigated about it. So much that no one dared to upvote it, nor downvote it. I've been told there it's a bad practice, but then I've also been told garbage collector runs don't systematically stop the world anymore, and that it could also be only seen as a hint, so I'm kind of at loss. I do understand that usually the JVM knows better than you when it needs to reclaim memory. I also understand that worrying about a few kilobytes of data is silly. And I also understand that even megabytes of data isn't what it was a few years back. But still, 1.5 gigabyte? And you know there's like 1.5 GB of data hanging around in memory; it's not like it's a shot in the dark. Is System.gc() systematically bad, or is there some point at which it becomes okay? So the question is actually double: Why is it or not a bad practice to call System.gc()? Is it really a hint under certain implementations, or is it always a full collection cycle? Are there really garbage collector implementations that can do their work without stopping the world? Please shed some light over the various assertions people have made. Where's the threshold? Is it never a good idea to call System.gc(), or are there times when it's acceptable? If any, what are those times?

However, during rsyncing the application is left in an inconsistent state, as some files may already be synced while others still are left with the old version right? How do people deal with this issue? I guess the same problem exists when deploying via svn/git/cvs. Should I just close the site, rsync, and open up again?   I recently had an issue after upgrading my .net framework to 4.0 from 3.5, I did this because in 4.0 the SMTPClient finally sends a QUIT command to the SMTP server.   I recently purchased a Mushkim SSD to replace my failing hard drive of my H/P Dv6-12465dx laptop. Physical installation of the SSD should be easy. I have my existing HD divided into five virtual drives, one of which contains the Windows 7 Operating System. There were no back up disks when I purchased the machine originally. How do I go about saving the Operating system and transferring it to the new SSD?

  I want to separate my system.serviceModel section of the web.config into a separate file to facilitate some environment settings. My efforts have been fruitless. When I attempt it using this method. The wcf code throws an exception: "The type initializer for 'System.ServiceModel.ClientBase 1 threw an exception. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I downloaded SAP PDK for .NET, build a solution using it, but this requires Portal Runtime for .NET to be installed on server, and this cannot be done, because SAP server is a Solaris one! Also, I've checked existing solutions, but all of them use VS.NET 2003, to create what is called SAP Connector Proxy? So, is there a way to connect to SAP system apart from using VS.NET 2003?

  From hard experience I've found it useful to occasionally save the state of my long computations to disk to start them up later if something fails. Can I do this in a distributed computation package in R (like SNOW or multicore)? It does not seem clear how this could be done since the master is collecting things from the slaves in a non-transparent way.
