• Can I embed a custom font in an iPhone application?

  I would like to have an app include a custom font for rendering text, load it, and then use it with standard UIKit elements like UILabel. Is this possible? I found these links: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8304744 http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=569311 but these would require me to render each glyph myself, which is a bit too much like hard work, especially for multi-line text. I've also found posts that say straight out that it's not possible, but without justification, so I'm looking for a definitive answer. EDIT - failed -[UIFont fontWithName:size:] experiment I downloaded Harrowprint.tff (downloaded from here) and added it to my Resources directory and to the project. I then tried this code: UIFont* font = [UIFont fontWithName:@"Harrowprint" size:20]; which resulted in an exception being thrown. Looking at the TTF file in Finder confirmed that the font name was Harrowprint. EDIT - there have been a number of replies so far which tell me to read the documentation on X or Y. I've experimented extensively with all of these, and got nowhere. In one case, X turned out to be relevant only on OS X, not on iPhone. Consequently I am setting a bounty for this question, and I will award the bounty to the first person who provides an answer (using only documented APIs) who responds with sufficient information to get this working on the device. Working on the simulator too would be a bonus. EDIT - it appears that the bounty auto-awards to the answer with the highest nunber of votes. Interesting. No one actually provided an answer that solved the question as asked - the solution that involves coding your own UILabel subclass doesn't support word-wrap, which is an essential feature for me - though I guess I could extend it to do so.

• CSS - Class hierarchies???

  Hi, I have a site with a customer front end, which has a catalogue, homepage, contact page, about us page and so on. There is also an administration front end. I would like to implement a kind of hierarchy where any elements within an element with class "admin" will inherit properties set in the admin stylesheet and anything else inherits from the customer stylesheet. The purpose of this is so that admin can login on the admin front end, where they have access to lots of advanced stuff, but they can also navigate to the customer front end where they can execute basic tasks (such as hiding catalogue items, running a debug script if a customer reports an issue and so on). I would like all the admin tools on the customer front end to have properties taken from the admin stylesheet instead of the customer one - this will change the background colour and stuff. Is there any easy way to set up like namespaces to make things simpler, for example: .admin { .list { .list-subtitle { } .list-item { } } a { } } .customer { .list { .list-subtitle { } .list-item { } } a { } } I know it can be like: .admin .list {} .admin .list .list-item {} .admin a I just dont want to have to keep putting .admin all the time. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this? I suppose I could write a .net class which sets this up and writes a stylesheet according to whats put into it, but then I would not be able to read the styles so easily add there would be all sorts of like Classes.Add(blah) and so on. • FasterCSV Parsing issue?

  G'day guys, I'm currently using fastercsv to construct ActiveRecord elements and I can't for the life of me see this bug (tired), but for some reason when it creates, if in the rake file i output the column I want to save as the element value, it puts out correctly, as either a Trade or a Quote but when I try to save it into the activerecord, it won't work. FasterCSV.foreach("input.csv", :headers => true) do |row| d = DateTime.parse(row[1]+" "+row[2]) offset = Rational(row[3].to_i,24) o = d.new_offset(offset) t = Trade.create( :name => row[0], :type => row[4], :time => o, :price => row[6].to_f, :volume => row[7].to_i, :bidprice => row[10].to_f, :bidsize => row[11].to_i, :askprice => row[14].to_f, :asksize => row[15].to_i ) end Ideas? Name and Type are both strings, every other value works except for type. Have I missed something really simple?

I have an XML set that looks like the following: <Results> <Result> <ID>1</ID> <Name>John Smith</Name> <EmailAddress>[email protected]</EmailAddress> </Result> <Result> <ID>2</ID> <Name>Bill Young</Name> <EmailAddress>[email protected]</EmailAddress> </Result> </Results> I have loaded this XML into an XDocument as such: string xmlText = GetXML(); XDocument xml = XDocument.Parse(xmlText); Now, I'm trying to get the results into POCO format. In an effort to do this, I'm currently using: var objects = from results in xml.Descendants("Results") select new Results // I'm stuck How do I get a collection of Result elements via LINQ? I'm particularly confused about navigating the XML structure at this point in my code. Thank you!

• Is there any special tool for interactive GUI development

  Hi, Currently I am preparing exercises about networks and mobile communications for students. I was thinking about creating an interactive user-interface which enables the user to drag&drop predefined elements and then implement a logic based upon element distances etc. An example would be to place two base stations (a predefined element with several properties), set the scale in the interface and then check the signal interferrence in the environment (user-interface). The first part might be too abstract whereas the example might be too specific, but I was wondering whether there already exists any friendly framework or language which enables developers to create interactive interfaces (for teaching/learning purpouses) in short ammount of time. Usually I write applications for PC environment in .NET but in this case it would take too much time to create a specific interface for every exercise. I would appreciate if anyone could suggest any way to create interactive user-interface in short ammount of time. Are there any special programming languages or development tools for this kind of applications or are there any useful frameworks for .NET, Java or any other language to speed up the development of user-interfaces? • Difficulty with apps with a forced landscape orientation

  I have two apps, both of which force the user to use the iPhone in landscape mode, in order to have a wider screen, instead of a taller one. One of the things I have found is that my first view will look fine, but all other views come up with their subviews (UIButtons, UIPicker, UIViews) squeezed to one side or clipped (depending on whether the elements were set to move, resize or stay in the same position as the view size changed). All my views are designed in IB in the landscape orientation. My underlying UIWindow, and everything I can think of has been laid out in landscape orientation. Even my plist file has the UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight flag set. Now, if I load all my views at the same time as my rootview controller, then I have no problems. But if I have views loaded later, they get clipped or squeezed. The only way to get around the problem was to add the following line in my code that flips in a new view: [coming.view setFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 480, 300)]; Anyone know why I need to do this? Is it just that the iPhone assumes that loaded views are 300x480 unless a transform gets applied to them? Thanks. ps. This is what the view looks like if I don't call setFrame, as described above: All viewcontrollers that get loaded after the first one will have their screen similarly squeezed down. For some reason the first viewcontroller doesn't have this issue.

• JEE Filter is not being executed during <h:commandLink> request

  Hi, I am working on a JEE application with facelets running in Tomcat 6. I wrote I Filter which works fine. Inside some facelet pages there are <h:commandLink> elements refering to another page inside the application and passing parameters to a managed bean. The refered page works on with the managed bean which got the parameter passed. <h:commandLink action="SingleArtikel.xhtml">Details <f:setPropertyActionListener target="#{artikelBackingBean.primaryKey}" value="${artikel.primaryKey}" /> </h:commandLink> Now when I click on such a link, the filter is not beeing called. The URL inside the browsers url text field does not change. The refered pages are structured like this: <ui:composition template="index.xhtml"> <ui:define name="content"> ...content... </ui:define> </ui:composition> It is included into a template "index.xhtml". Why is the filter not being executed on such a request? Why does the url not change? How does such a request work? Thanks in advance.

• Draw a column graph with no space between columns

  I am using the WPF toolkit, and am trying to render a graph that looks like a histogram. In particular, I want each column to be right up against each other column. There should be no gaps between columns. There are a number of components that you apply when creating a column graph. (See example XAML below). • Soft Paint Bucket Fill: Colour Equality

  I'm making a small app where children can fill preset illustrations with colours. I've succesfully implemented an MS-paint style paint bucket using the flood fill argorithm. However, near the edges of image elements pixels are left unfilled, because the lines are anti-aliased. This is because the current condition on whether to fill is colourAtCurrentPixel == colourToReplace (the colours are RGB uints) I'd like to add a smoothing/treshold option like in Photoshop and other sophisticated tools, but what's the algorithm to determine the equality/distance between two colours? if (match(pixel(x,y), colourToReplace) setpixel(x,y,colourToReplaceWith) How to fill in match()? • MooTools Event Delegation using HTML5 data attributes.

  Is it possible to have event delegation using the HTML5 data attributes in MooTools? The HTML structure I have is: ?<div id="parent"> <div>not selectable</div> <div data-selectable="true">selectable</div> <div>not selectable either.</div> <div data-selectable="true">also selectable</div> </div>???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? And I want to setup <div id="parent"> to listen to all clicks only on child elements that have the data-selected attribute. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong: The events are being setup as: $("parent").addEvent("click:relay([data-selectable])", function(event, el) { alert(this.get('text')); }); but the click callback is fired on clicking all div's, not just the ones with a data-selectable attribute defined. You can see this example on http://jsfiddle.net/NUGD4/ A workaround is to adding this as a CSS class, which works with delegation but I would prefer to be able to use data-attributes as it's used throughout the application.

The information above could be represented as JSON data like this: "adr": { "street-address":"665 3rd St.", "extended-address":"Suite 207", "locality":"San Fransicso", "region":"CA", "postal-code":"94107", "country-name":"U.S.A." }, The issue I have with this is that I'd like my JSON data to be as lightweight as possible, but still human readable. While still supporting international addresses, I would prefer something like this: "address": { "street":"665 3rd St.", "extended":"Suite 207", "locality":"San Fransicso", "region":"CA", "code":"94107", "country":"U.S.A." }, If I'm designing a new JSON API right now, does it make sense to use microformats from the start? Or should I not really worry about it? Is there some other standard that is more specific to JSON that I should look at?

• Implementing arrays using a stack

  My programming language has no arrays, no lists, no pointers, no eval and no variable variables. All it has: Ordinary variables like you know them from most programming languages: They all have an exact name and a value. One stack. Functions provided are: push (add element to top), pop (remove element from top, get value) and empty (check if stack is empty) My language is turing-complete. (Basic arithmetics, conditional jumps, etc implemented) That means, it must be possible to implement some sort of list or array, right? But I have no idea how... What I want to achieve: Create a function which can retrieve and/or change an element x of the stack. I could easily add this function in the implementation of my language, in the interpreter, but I want to do it in my programming language. "Solution" one (Accessing an element x, counting from the stack top) Create a loop. Pop off the element from the stack top x times. The last element popped of is element number x. I end up with a destroyed stack. Solution two: Do the same as above, but store all popped off values in a second stack. Then you could move all elements back after you are done. But you know what? I don't have a second stack!

• Vote on Pros and Cons of Java HTML to XML cleaners

  I am looking to allow HTML emails (and other HTML uploads) without letting in scripts and stuff. I plan to have a white list of safe tags and attributes as well as a whitelist of CSS tags and value regexes (to prevent automatic return receipt). I asked a question: Parse a badly formatted XML document (like an HTML file) I found there are many many ways to do this. Some systems have built in sanitizers (which I don't care so much about). This page is a very nice listing page but I get kinda lost http://java-source.net/open-source/html-parsers It is very important that the parsers never throw an exception. There should always be best guess results to the parse/clean. It is also very important that the result is valid XML that can be traversed in Java. I posted some product information and said Community Wiki. Please post any other product suggestions you like and say Community Wiki so they can be voted on. Also any comments or wiki edits on what part of a certain product is better and what is not would be greatly appreciated. (for example,, speed vs accuracy..) It seems that we will go with either jsoup (seems more active and up to date) or TagSoup (compatible with JDK4 and been around awhile). A +1 for any of these products would be if they could convert all style sheets into inline style on the elements.

• c++ OpenCV CVCalibrateCamera2 is causing multiple errors

  I am making a simple calibration program in C++ using OpenCV. Everything goes fine until I actually try to call CVCalibrateCamera2. At this point, I get one of several errors: If the number of images which I am using is equal to 4 (which is the number of points being drawn from each image: OpenCV Error: Sizes of input arguments do not match (Both matrices must have the same number of points) in unknown function, file ......\src\cv\cvfundam.cpp, line 870 If the number of images is below 20: OpenCV Error: Bad argument (The total number of matrix elements is not divisible by the new number of rows) in unknown function, file ......\src\cxcore\cxarray.cpp, line 2749 Otherwise, if the number of image is 20 or above: OpenCV Error: Unsupported format or combination of formats (Invalid matrix type) in unknown function, file ......\src\cxcore\cxarray.cpp, line 117 I have checked the arguments for CVCalibrateCamera2 many times, and I am certain that they are of the correct dimensions relative to one another. It seems like somewhere the program is trying to reshape a matrix based on the number of images, but I can't figure out where or why. Any ideas? I am using Eclipse Galileo, MINGW 5.1.6, and OpenCV 2.1.

  I am using an ItemsControl where the ItemsPanel is set to Canvas (see this question for more background information). The ItemsControl is performing as I want, and it works like a charm when adding a child element manually by putting it into ItemsControl.Items: <ItemsControl> <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <Canvas IsItemsHost="True" /> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsControl.Items> <Button Canvas.Left="500" Content="Button Text" /> </ItemsControl.Items> </ItemsControl> Note the Canvas.Left property on the Button. This works like a charm, and the Button is placed 500 pixels from the left of the ItemsControl left side. Great! However, When I am defining a ItemsSource binding to a List, the Canvas.left doesn't have any effect: <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Elements}"> <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <Canvas IsItemsHost="True" /> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Button Canvas.Left="500" Content="Button Text" /> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> By inspecting the application during run time, I see one difference. The container ContentPresenter has been added between the Canvas and the button.. How can I set the Canvas.Left property on the ContentPresenter itself? Or is there another way to solve this problem? • Compare new Integer Objects in ArrayList Question

  I am storing Integer objects representing an index of objects I want to track. Later in my code I want to check to see if a particular object's index corresponds to one of those Integers I stored earlier. I am doing this by creating an ArrayList and creating a new Integer from the index of a for loop: ArrayList<Integer> courseselectItems = new ArrayList(); //Find the course elements that are within a courseselect element and add their indicies to the ArrayList for(int i=0; i<numberElementsInNodeList; i++) { if (nodeList.item(i).getParentNode().getNodeName().equals("courseselect")) { courseselectItems.add(new Integer(i)); } } I then want to check later if the ArrayList contains a particular index: //Cycle through the namedNodeMap array to find each of the course codes for(int i=0; i<numberElementsInNodeList; i++) { if(!courseselectItems.contains(new Integer(i))) { //Do Stuff } } My question is, when I create a new Integer by using new Integer(i) will I be able to compare integers using ArrayList.contains()? That is to say, when I create a new object using new Integer(i), will that be the same as the previously created Integer object if the int value used to create them are the same? I hope I didn't make this too unclear. Thanks for the help!

• jQuery, html5, append()/appendTo() and IE

  How to replicate: Create an html5 page. Make sure you have the script from remysharp.com/2009/01/07/html5-enabling-script/ added so that IE will notice the tags. Create an hardcoded <section id='anything'></section> tag. Using jQuery 1.3.2, append another section tag: $('#anything').append('<section id="whatever"></section>'); So far, everything works in all the browsers. Repeat the previous step. $('#whatever').append('<section id="fail"></section>'); This is where IE6/7 fails. Firefox/Safari will continue working. Error This is the error displayed. Thoughts It could be that IE6/7 can't handle the HTML5 section tag. I say this because when I change step 4 from <section> to <div>, IE6/7 will start working. If I use document.createElement() and create my new element, it works, but it seems like jQuery's append() has a problem with html5 elements.

• AMF data is incomplete with Flex Service

  Hello everybody. I am bussy with a Flex Project with a data services. Flash builder installed Zend Framework with Zend_Amf. When i run the project i get the error NetConnection.Call.Failed: HTTP: Failed. With chalers i say that Zend_Amf give the error: AMF data is incomplete (0 bytes of 0 bytes). Please check the recording limits in the Recording Settings. I don't know what the problem means. I have searched on google, but i haven't found a good result. • Error checking overkill?

  What error checking do you do? What error checking is actually necessary? Do we really need to check if a file has saved successfully? Shouldn't it always work if it's tested and works ok from day one? I find myself error checking for every little thing, and most of the time if feels overkill. Things like checking to see if a file has been written to a file system successfully, checking to see if a database statement failed.......shouldn't these be things that either work or don't? How much error checking do you do? Are there elements of error checking that you leave out because you trust that it'll just work? I'm sure I remember reading somewhere something along the lines of "don't test for things that'll never really happen".....can't remember the source though. So should everything that could possibly fail be checked for failure? Or should we just trust those simpler operations? For example, if we can open a file, should we check to see if reading each line failed or not? Perhaps it depends on the context within the application or the application itself. It'd be interesting to hear what others do. Thanks, James.

• How to pass PHP variable as FlashVars via SWFObject

  I am trying to take a PHP variable and pass it along to Flash via Flash vars. My end goal is to pass a string formatted as XML to Flash, but because I'm struggling I've stripped everything down to the basics. I'm just trying to pass a simple PHP string variable to Flash via FlashVars with SWFObject but something isn't right. The page won't load when I try to pass the variable inside of php tags, but it will load if I just pass a hard coded string. • Questions on usages of sizeof

  Question 1 I have a struct like, struct foo { int a; char c; }; When I say sizeof(foo), i am getting 8 on my machine. As per my understanding, 4 bytes for int, 1 byte for char and 3 bytes for padding. Is that correct? Given a struct like the above, how will I find out how many bytes will be added as padding? Question 2 I am aware that sizeof can be used to calculate the size of an array. Mostly I have seen the usage like (foos is an array of foo) sizeof(foos)/sizeof(*foos) But I found that the following will also give same result. sizeof(foos) / sizeof(foo) Is there any difference in these two? Which one is preffered? Question 3 Consider the following statement. foo foos[] = {10,20,30}; When I do sizeof(foos) / sizeof(*foos), it gives 2. But the array has 3 elements. If I change the statement to foo foos[] = {{10},{20},{30}}; it gives correct result 3. Why is this happening? Any thoughts..

• Hibernate: order multiple one-to-many relations

  I have a search screen, using JSF, JBoss Seam and Hibernate underneath. There are columns for A, B and C, where the relations are as follows: A (1< -- ) B (1< -- ) C A has a List< B and B has a List< C (both relations are one-to-many). The UI table supports ordering by any column (ASC or DESC), so I want the results of the query to be ordered. This is the reason I used Lists in the model. However, I got an exception that Hibernate cannot eagerly fetch multiple bags (it considers both lists to be bags). There is an interesting blog post here, and they identify the following solutions: Use @IndexColumn annotation (there is none in my DB, and what's more, I want the position of results to be determined by the ordering, not by an index column) Fetch lazily (for performance reasons, I need eager fetching) Change List to Set So, I changed the List to Set, which by the way is more correct, model-wise. First, if don't use @OrderBy, the PersistentSet returned by Hibernate wraps a HashSet, which has no ordering. Second, If I do use @OrderBy, the PersistentSet wraps a LinkedHashSet, which is what I would like, but the OrderBy property is hardcoded, so all other ordering I perform through the UI comes after it. I tried again with Sets, and used SortedSet (and its implementation, TreeSet), but I have some issues: I want ordering to take place in the DB, and not in-memory, which is what TreeSet does (either through a Comparator, or through the Comparable interface of the elements). Second, I found that there is the Hibernate annotation @Sort, which has a SortOrder.UNSORTED and you can also set a Comparator. I still haven't managed to make it compile, but I am still not convinced it is what I need. Any advice?

• LINQ - is SkipWhile broken?

  I'm a bit surprised to find the results of the following code, where I simply want to remove all 3s from a sequence of ints: var sequence = new [] { 1, 1, 2, 3 }; var result = sequence.SkipWhile(i => i == 3); // Oh noes! Returns { 1, 1, 2, 3 } Why isn't 3 skipped? My next thought was, OK, the Except operator will do the trick: var sequence = new [] { 1, 1, 2, 3 }; var result = sequence.Except(i => i == 3); // Oh noes! Returns { 1, 2 } In summary, Except removes the 3, but also removes non-distinct elements. Grr. SkipWhile doesn't skip the last element, even if it matches the condition. Grr. Can someone explain why SkipWhile doesn't skip the last element? And can anyone suggest what LINQ operator I can use to remove the '3' from the sequence above?
