    Hello, I have created anonymous(everyone account) "hidden" shares on Windows 2003 to let our ASP.NET application access it from another server without credentials. I have added $ to share name to hide it from other users, but actually this is not solution because such shares can be easily discovered by other OS or some tools on Win.   • What are pros and cons of logrotate vs rotatelogs with Apache?

    Apache provides a tool called rotatelogs which has the benefit of not restarting apache when rotating logs which happens with logrotate. I do not have enough experience to speak if this is enough criteria to use rotatelogs over logrotate. My questions is does anyone have real life experience using either or of these two tools and what were your input would be? What would you recommend and why?

  • TTY with 256 colors?

    With URxvt and xterm it is possible to use a virtual terminal supporting 256 colors instead of only eight. Since my Intel GMA graphics card is well-supported by the KMS framebuffer driver, I am exclusively working on the TTY. Unfortunately it only supports eight colors although with MPlayer (-vo fbdev/fbdev2) and other framebuffer tools far more can be addressed. Is there a way to tell the TTY to use more than eight colors?

    We have a standard MySQL Master/Slave replication for our database. In order to use the slave server we have set up MySQL Proxy. However we have been strongly discouraged to use it as it still alpha and not very well supported. Our application is built with Drupal 7 which doesn't use very effectively its slave database (see my related question on Drupal Answers). What tools could we use to act like MySQL proxy and send SELECT queries on the slave server in order to distribute the load ?

  • How to get a good clean newspaper scan?

    I tried a few times to scan newspaper articles, but the images I got were always blotchy and with bad colors (sort of like this). Sometimes I see some really good scans, like this. What is the trick to get such good results? Do I need some high-quality scanner, or do I need some good photoshop filters? If there was something I could do using free tools it would be awesome.

    I'm running windows 8.1 on Parallels 9 on Mac OS X 10.9.3 Mavericks. Before that I used to have VMWare and I could manage to install Intel Iris drivers for OpenCL SDK. But Parallels installs tools for virtualization I guess and in device manager I see Parallels Display Adapter (VDDM) instead of Intel Iris Graphics Processor. How can I see the device and be able to install latest Intel drivers so that I can Install Intel OpenCL SDK. Thank you.

    I want to start something like a personal TuneWiki on my computer. I'm using Windows and have a lot of MP3s. Now I want to add lyrics to them for personal use. I tried Windows Media Player but it is bit a hard to synchronize all of the text with the song time. Are there other tools or players for adding lyrics so that when I start to play a song the streaming text will be synchronized with the beat?

    If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

    Microsoft Security Essentials seems to allow only quarantine or delete actions for program that it deems to have "high" or "severe" risk. However, it also assigns these levels to what it considers to be "hacking tools". Is there a way to override this nanny behaviour and force programs on the allowed list? Thank you.     I blocked a page in robots.txt under User-agent: *, and tried to do a manual removal of that URL from Google's cache in the webmasters tools. Google said it wasn't being blocked in my robots.txt, so I then blocked it specifically under User-agent: GoogleBot and tried removing it again and this time it worked. Does that mean Google doesn't respect User-agent: * or what?

  • How do I copy/clone a dynamic disk in Windows 7?

    I have some dynamic disks (or "partitions" but they are not really partitions) that I want to copy onto spare hard drives. I tried using gpartd (and fdisk for that matter) from a linux live disc. All it saw was hard drives with only one partition encasing the whole hard drive. So gpartd/fdisk is incapable of identifying the dynamic "partitions" and allowing me to copy them. Any tools that can be used to clone/copy a dynamic "partition"?

  • Windows XP Computer Management - Local Users and Groups error

    Hi all, I opened Computer Management and happened to see that "Local Users and Groups" (under System Tools) had a red X over top of it. After clicking the link, it shows a message saying "Unable to access the computer EMACHINES-PC. The error was: Library not registered." What could have caused this, and how can I fix it?   • Can files deleted with rm -rf be recovered?

    When I delete folders or files in through osx terminal using the rm -rf, where do they go? I heard that some say they are deleted directly, but some also say it only "remove the link to the file making it unable to be found or accessed without special tools" (http://superuser.com/questions/370786/where-do-files-and-directories-go-when-i-run-rm-rf-folder-or-file-name-in-ubu). Someone said something about ext3 being able to save rm-ed files in ubuntu but what about mac?
