• rake test and test_structure.sql

  First of all, I have to run "rake RAILS_ENV=test ..." to get the test suites to hit my test DB. Annoying but ok to live with. However when I do so, I get a long stream of errors like so: > rake RAILS_ENV=test -I test test:units psql:/path/to/project/db/test_structure.sql:33: ERROR: function "armor" already exists with same argument types [and many more] It looks like some DB definitions are getting unnecessarily reloaded. I can't find any mention of this on Google, so I was wondering whether others have seen this? I am using a PostgreSQL database with the following in my environment.rb: config.active_record.schema_format = :sql and using Rails 2.3.5 with rake 0.8.7.

  Hi all, When you click Add a box. It adds a box with a deletlistbtn. Right now it removes all boxes with the same name/class/var. But i want the button to only delete the box/list its in. Can anyone tell me wich code i should use to accomplish that? • How do I determine darker or lighter color variant of a given color?

  Given a source color of any hue by the system or user, I'd like a simple algorithm I can use to work out a lighter or darker variants of the selected color. Similar to effects used on Windows Live Messenger for styling the user interface. Language is C# with .net 3.5. Responding to comment: Color format is (Alpha)RGB. With values as bytes or floats. Marking answer: For the context of my use (a few simple UI effects), the answer I'm marking as accepted is actually the most simple for this context. However, I've given up votes to the more complex and accurate answers too. Anyone doing more advanced color operations and finding this thread in future should definitely check those out. • Reporting sanitized user input to the user via AJAX

  I am writing some code to give live feedback to the user on the validation of a form using AJAX. I have got it checking length and if the field is empty. Now I want it to sanitize the users input and if the sanatized input differs from the users original input then tell them which characters are not allowed. The code I have written so far works except some characters most notably a '£' symbol result in no response. I think it relates to json_encode and its encoding. According to Microsoft's "It just works policy" the IDE is no longer supported after april 8th 2008 It still works to develop and deploy vb 6 apps. The question is: When will it be impossible to support vb6 applications, or will they live forever like Cobol applications do? Update: Microsoft statement march 2010: The Visual Basic team is committed to “It Just Works” compatibility for Visual Basic 6.0 applications on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 including R2, and Windows 7.

• In Rails, what could cause a user to have another user's session?

  I have a Rails application using with an authentication system using Restful Authentication without any modification. Users have reported finding themselves logged in as the wrong user. In at least one case it was on their very first page view, never having logged in before. Is it possible their session ids are getting mixed up? Would switching to CookieStore make it impossible for this to happen since no session data is stored on the server this way? I suspect the problem is related to Passenger but I don't know where to start debugging this. Its only happened about 4 times in several months of being live so its virtually impossible to reproduce. Environment: ActiveRecord session storage Rails 2.2.2 Passenger 2.0.1 Apache 2 Ruby 1.8.6 Many thanks

• What is the best software to write and organize written copy / content for a website?

  I'm a newbie product manager, looking for tips on how to write and organize text copy for my company's website. I need to be able to prepare the content for our public site and turn it over to the web designer who publishes it to our live site. I want our UI team to be able to quickly glance at the copy I write and immediately know where on the page I intend for it to go. Currently, I'm using microsoft word to write and color code different text to signify where I want specific text to go. It is difficult for the UI guy to immediately know if something goes into the nav bar or into a header or a description below a header. In addition to that, it would be helpful for me to be able to write the copy in such a way that the web designer could copy and paste it into the XHTML without having to go back and manually replace special punctuation characters with the XHTML entities. What software is out there that will allow a comprehensive solution to these web copywriting issues?

• Unique visitor counting in ASP.NET MVC

  I'd like to do visitor tracking similar to how stackoverflow does it.. By reading through numerous posts, I've figured out some details already: Count only 1 IP hit per 15 minutes (if anonymous) Count only 1 unique user-Login (per day?) Now that leaves the question of the real implementation.. Should I log the two factors live into a table (and increase count) | IP | timestamp | pageurl | Or do the counting AFTERWARDS (e.g. using IIS log files - which don't include the user, right? I know there're some similar posts outside, but NONE really has a great solution in my opinion yet..

• PHP => Alternative to session data?

  i have a Web Application where Cookies and Session are both important. Since the Web Application is load balanced on different server, i am looking for suggestions to Alternative Store for the Session data that all server will be able to access. Some sessions could live up to severals days. The solutions that come to my mind: - Native PHP Sessions (this is the one i want to stop using) - MySQL Database - Serialize and write to a file (i want to avoid this, for performances) - Memcache (however it could become very big or older data getting knocked out) Thanks in advance!

  hi, I'm looking for a hashtable implementation in C that stores its objects in (twodimensional) arrays rather than linked lists. i.e. if a collision happens, the object that is causing the collision will be stored in the next free row index rather than pushed to the head and first element of a linked list. plus, the objects themselves must be copied to the hashtable, rather than referenced by pointers. (the objects do not live for the whole lifetime of the program but the table does). I know that such an implementation might have serious efficiency drawbacks and is not the "standard way of hashing" but as I work on a very special system-architecture i need those characteristics. thanks

• Working with version control on a Drupal/CMS project

  I was wondering how teams that develop sites using Drupal (or any other CMS) integrate version control, subversion, git or similar, into their workflow. You'd obviously want your custom code and theme files under version control but when you use a CMS such as Drupal a lot of the work consists of configuring modules and settings all of which is stored in the database. So when you are a team of developers, how do you collaborate on a project like this? Dumping the database into a file and putting that file under version control might work I guess, but when the site is live the client is constantly adding content which makes syncing a bit problematic. I'd love to know how others are doing this.

  I'm always writing tests to check my controller restricts people from certain actions depending on their status i.e. logged in, admin? etc Regardless of whether its a get to :index or a puts to :create the code is always the same. I'm trying to refactor this so that i have one method such as should_redirect_unauthenticated_to_login_action(request, action) and call it like so should_redirect_unauthenticated_to_login_action(:get, :index) = get :index But not sure how to dynamically call the various response methods rails provides for functional tests which seem to live in the module ActionController I mucked around with module = Kernel.const_get("ActionController") module::TestProcess.get NoMethodError: undefined method `get' for ActionController::TestProcess:Module can anyone help (im very new to dynamic calling in ruby)

• iPhone Application and programming Updates

  Hi When a user logs into my iPhone App. I store their userID and relevant information in [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]. This way they are not required to log in each time they access my application. When my application is live in the app store and I make updates to the code will this information be lost - will they then be required to log in? If so how do I go about preserving this information when I make updates? And while I can't image this happening but should a user choose to delete my application after they have installed it - how would I know that they have deleted it? I am using the push notifications and would like to flag the user as not being active so that I don't keep pushing out notifications to them. Thanks Very Much Cheryl

  When I wrote JEE apps, I used JBoss Datasources to control which databases the deployment used. E.g. the dev versions would use a throwaway hibernate db, the ref and ops would use stable MySQL deployments. I also used MBeans to configure various other services and rules. Now that I'm using Spring, I'd like the same functionality - deploy the same code, but with different configuration. Crucially, I'd also like Unit Tests to still run with stub services. My question is this - is there a way, in JBoss, to inject configuration with files which live outside of the WAR/EAR, and also include these files in test resources.

• Is there a global inbox for android?

  I'm a Blackberry fan and I have been aching to get a phone with a better UI (and not the jesusPhone). I was looking at the Android platform and find it quite fun to play with. However, one of the crucial elements of my BB that I love to death is the global inbox of all my email accounts. (not to mention the BB messenger, but I can live without that). • What tools do people use to make programming tutorial videos?

  Hi folks, I'm wanting to make some yee-run-o-the-mill tutorial video's about some programming concepts and stuff i've been doing. Nothing special ... lots of peeps been doing it. What tools are people using to record and edit these videos? What resolutions / fonts / sizes do people generally use/set? The only tool I've had experience with is Camtasia - and i didn't mind it. But i've seen vid's (or live demo's) where people zoom in to code sections.. how do they do that? For final editing, do most people just do some simple power point presentation with some video snippets mashed in. cheers!

  I'm creating a webapp using jQueryMobile. When I'm using the app and I click a button it runs the script multiple times. • Make backup of large site with 100,000+ files/images

  I tried backing up our site today using the Unix 'cp' command and ended up getting our office blocked out by PLESK - it added my ip to /etc/hosts.deny as it thought I was flooding the server. After Tech support fixed the issue, they suggested I go folder by folder to back it up, but there's about 10,000 folders on the site totaling 1/2 a terabyte, each with multiple sub-folders, so this isn't viable. Basically I want to be able to mirror the domain on another domain we've got set up on the same dedicated server so I can test with live images (the bulk of our content). Any suggestions e.g adding some rules to open_base_dir and getting PHP to recursively copy the folders to the other domain (remember it's on the same dedicated box so it just needs to traverse the directory, not FTP things).

  When invoking System.gc() in java (via JMX), it will dutifully (attempt to) clean the young generation. This generally works very well. I have never seen it attempt to clean the tenured generation, though. This leads me to two questions: Can the tenured generation even be collected (i.e. is there actually garbage in this generation, or do all objects in the tenured generation actually still have live references to them)? If the tenured generation can be collected, can this be done via System.gc(), or is there another way to do it (unlikely), or will I simply have to wait until I run out of space in the tenured generation?
