• What is the optimum number of admins to server?

  Hello all. I'm starting a business, and I'd like to know what you guys think the optimum number of admins to server ratio is for financial modeling reasons. Or if there's a better metric to use? I come from an embedded programming background so this is an area that I'm pretty squishy on knowledge-wise. : \ Additional Info: There will be a lot of servers. • KDE doesn't start up anything else

  I just installed KDE under Arch Linux. Problem is, nothing is starting up right with it - no window manager, no panels, nothing. All I get is a small terminal window in the bottom right corner of the screen, which I'm assuming is konsole. From that single window I can do things like start kwin or launch programs whose names I happen to know (like chromium or firefox), but I don't have a panel for starting programs or switching between programs. It doesn't matter whether I start kdm through inittab or manually by typing # /etc/rc.d/kdm start. KDM looks great, but once I log in as my normal user I just get a console window with no decoration. Is there a startup script for KDE somewhere that needs to run, and usually has a bunch of programs by default - like a window manager, panels, widgets, and all the normal background programs that run in an ordinary GUI? If so, how can I "restore" the default behavior?

  My Firefox configuration is tricky: Firefox runs at separate restricted user account which cannot connect to main X server. Firefox uses Xvfb (virtual "headless" X server) as X server. x11vnc is running on that Xvfb. On the main X server there is vncviewer running that connect to this x11vnc On powerful laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) it seems to work more or less well, but on "Acer Aspire One" netbook it is slowish (on a background that firefox is loaded with lots of extensions). How to optimise this scheme? Requirements: Browser cannot connect to main X server. Browser should be in chroot jail (no "suid" scripts, readonly for many things) Browser should have a lot of features (like in AutoPager, NoScript, WoT, AdBlockPlus)

• Group policy to disable notifications of particular errors?

  How do i disable the notifications of particular errors? A little background to my issue. During the installation of the Kaspersky, it disables all the windows firewall for all except the domain. I have remedied this by creating an offline policy in Kaspersky which enables the Kaspersky firewall when out of the office (ie not connected to the office network). The problem now is that users in the office now see a notification showing that the firewall is disabled even though it’s enabled in all scenarios. It’s just that work and home show as disabled when the clients are connected to the office LAN. • Accessing local files through an http:// address

  I would like to access a folder of mp3 files on my local Windows machine through http:// addresses. For example, typing http://localhost:9999/songs/test.mp3 into my browser would play test.mp3, which sits in a specified folder on my C: drive. What is the very simplest way to do this? (Background: a program I'm using wants me to enter the URLs of these files, but assumes they are remote and accessed over http. It doesn't accept URLs of the form file://C/Users.... So, I'd like to give these local files addresses that makes them "look" remote.)

• Unlock file on Windows Server 2003 by remote desktop without rebooting

  We've several Windows Server 2003 machines running, each with its own purposes. There are scheduled jobs which synchronizes some files over SFTP using WinSCP. Very sometimes a newly copied file is left locked in the "inbox" folder without any reason. The machine's own background task (programmed in Java) can't move it to the "processed" folder anymore after processing it. Manually moving it only yields the well known error message Cannot move [filename]: it is being used by another person or program. The only resort is to reboot the machine, but we would of course like to avoid that. Any suggestions? I tried Unlocker which works fine locally at WinXP, but doesn't work at those Win2K3 machines by remote desktop (unlock option doesn't show up in rightclick context menu). I tried Process Explorer as well as described in this blog article, but it caused the server to crash (not sure if that's because it's executed through remote desktop).

• TeamViewer: How to disable color dithering for low-bit-depth screen settings

  I am using Terminal Services and TeamViewer a lot to access other computers, partly over slow networks. The problem described below is not affected by which of the two remote access services I am using. When accessing Windows 7 Professional machines, a great deal of text is hard to read as the background is dithered. Even for exactly the same colors, Windows 2003 does not seem to dither at all, but to choose the closest available color. I strongly prefer the latter, as I don't care for the exact colors, I just want to be able to read easily. I am not sure whether this is operating system-related. The programs on the remote systems do not allow me to change the color choices for the various backgrounds to anything sane. Is there a way to disable this color dithering using some target operating system setting that will do the trick for both Terminal Services and TeamViewer?

• Colour table cells in Microsoft Word after mail merge

  I have an Excel spreadsheet of student data. For each of 30 topics, students are traffic lighted R, A or G (for red, amber, green) in the spreadsheet. I am mail merging individual result print-outs in Word 2010. However, rather than printing the letter R/A/G next to each topic, I would rather change the background colour of the cell to that colour. How can I do this? Is there an option with merge fields or can it be done with a macro (please provide sample code if so - I don't have experience with macros!)

• Grant permission for specific other AD users to unlock/log out user from PC

  What I'm looking to do is permission a Windows PC (ideally XP but if a later OS version is required so be it) so that a select group of users can unlock the machine, logging the current user out. This something that a Local Admin for the machine would be able to do from a locked screen, however, I'd like to avoid granting Local Admin rights to this group of users if I can. The background here is that this machine is 80% used by one person but is treated as a 'shared machine' on days that the primary user is not around. It's usefull that everybody using the machine can carry on using their own accounts with all the personalisations they are used to. I'd also like to void logging the primary user out every night. No one else in the firm has to put up with that and she does use the machine herself most of the time.

The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). • How to copy only VM changes in VMware to another physical machine

  How can I use VMware Workstation to copy only changes to a VM to another physical machine, rather than recopying the entire VM every time? Can I just copy the snapshot files, if the second physical machine starts from a pristine copy of the VM? Would it be best to create a linked clone against the original VM, and then copy the linked clone directory each time? Does that even work? (I'm assuming I'll have to change the path in the VM's metadata file, since the paths will be different. I'm assuming I can't clone a linked clone w/o cloning the base.) Background: I and another developer with VMware Workstation are using VM's for systems development. I have to work from a home desktop. Transporting a multi-gigabyte VM either direction takes several hours at best. Downloading it is easiest, but that takes an hour to get it on a DMZ machine for download and then many hours to actually download.

  I have a computer based on AMD processor & 512 MB RAM. Lately the computer has gone horribly slow. I did many tricks but was of no avail. So, I reinstalled my Operating system - Win XP SP3, still the the response is very slow. I checked if there are any background applications consuming resources. There was nothing suspicious. I removed all the applications on start, still the computer is slow. I've heard that AMD processor based systems show this behavior when they get aged. Is it true? Should I just buy a new system?

  Information and prerequisites: I have a project which is, at its core, a basic CRUD application. It doesn't have long running background processes which it forks at the beginning and talks to later on, nor does it have long running queries or kept alive connection requirements. It receives a request, makes some queries to the database and then responds. In order to serve static files and cachable files fast, I am going to use Varnish in all cases. Here is my question: After reading about various Python web application servers, I have seen that they all have their "fans" for certain, usually "personal" reasons, which got me confused since each usecase differs from the next. How can I learn about the core differentiating factors of Python web servers (in order) to decide how suitable they are for my project and if one would be better than the other?   What would be a good way to make a script run every time my computer connects to the network in Ubuntu? Would I somehow use dbus to do this? Background: when I'm on the train I run a short Perl script to click a button on the splash page. That way I can immediately use the internet without having to manually visit a pointless website. My script is a near-perfect solution, but it would be perfect if it could run automatically any time I connect to the network.

• UDF filesystem -> Maximum number of files

  I am considering partitioning a rather large hard drive with the UDF filesystem for an experiment, and would like to ask if anyone knows the maximum number of files, either by directory, or as a whole, that the UDF filesystem can handle? For some background, I looked at the JFS and XFS filesystems (NTFS has a limitation of the number of files per volume); however, since I run Windows, that's kind of out. UFD, on the other hand, does not appear to have these limitations, but then, I cannot really find any information on just how many files per volume the UDF file system supports.

  I'm looking for a utility that will take one large sized PDF, and split it into smaller PDFs for banner/poster printing. Looking for a linux or multi-platform solution. More Background My goal is to take an Inkscape document and generate a PDF, then print it on a printer that doesn't do banner/poster printing automatically - so if there's a better solution, I'd be happy to hear that as well. I've found exporting as a PNG both takes a while, and sometimes blends are not preserved. Printing as PDF (Ubuntu print-to-file) seems to work well. I've found utilities that can take large images formats and generate multipage PDFs, but not PDF to PDF.

• Photoshop / Illustrator Fill text box with large string.

  I have a massive string (lots of Fibonacci numbers concatenated together). I don't know how much of this text I need to fill an A4 page. What I was hoping for was to paste a large block into a text box and have it display as much as possible, wrapping the text at the end of a line, but it is not doing that. It is just displaying a blank box (With the text overflowing into an awaiting textbox or something. I have tried pasting smaller amounts of text into the text box, and it appears that it will get about half way and then go into 'blank' mode. All I need is a simple way of creating a background of numbers which I don't have to type in. Any ideas?

  We are overhauling a lab with new machines with Windows 7 (as clients - around 150 of them). In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients? It would be great if you can give me pointers to what concepts and background I need to have (like GPO), any design guidelines, best practices?

• Why are unicode characters not rendering correctly

  Background: I have some unicode characters in my prompt (git status markers essentially) I'm running urxvt under xfce on arch linux. I'm using DejaVu Sans Mono for Powerline font, specified via .Xresources line: URxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono for Powerline:pixelsize=14 When I start urxvt the unicode characters do not render correctly. For example ? renders as â However, if I then start a new urxvt from inside the first terminal everything renders correctly. There doesn't appear to be any difference in the environment between the two terminals. What could be the difference between the first invocation and the nested invocation? • BITS http download job fails to connect for owner Local SYSTEM account

  A service I have written that uses BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to auto update itself is having a problem on some machines (Windows 7 so far). I have been investigating and have discovered that some of the jobs that my service adds to the bits queue are failing immediately with the error code 0x80072efd (a connection with this server could not be established). The is not problem with connecting to the server for the download as it works fine on the same machine using IE (or any other web browser) and other clients can connect and update from the same server. I tried using the BITSADMIN.exe tool to add the jobs manually and they worked ok. I then changed the account my service was running under to the network service account so the bits jobs would be created with a different owner and the jobs completed successfully. My question is I don't want to run my service as this account as it wont have the required local permissions, so how to I change the permissions of the local system user to allow it to download from the HTTP source, I'm not aware of any way of this being restricted for this account but it obviously is.

  My VAIO advised me to switch to a White Background, to reduce power consumption. But it seems contradictory to common logic. Its like saying a brighter Torch consuming less than a dimmer one. Common Logic says that, Screen is BLACK when not using any POWER, so displaying black color should not consume any power (because without powering any pixel it gives black color) Also a white screen gives me more light than a darker one, so it should use more Energy. White Wallpaper = More Light Output = More Electrical Energy Consumed Black Wallpaper = Less Light = Less Electricity Consumed My question is - Is there anything wrong with the above argument ? A Lighter Wallpaper consumes less power than a Darker one. Is it true ? If yes, Why ?

• Set a row to follow my cursor anywhere in Calc

  How do I make a whole row follow wherever I am in the Calc document when I scroll down/up? I'm looking for something that keeps a row from moving, or to make it stay put. This is so that when I want to see other rows, this one locked row will stay in place and allow me to refer back to it on screen without having to scroll all the way back up to the top of the document. • Insert set of fields/document properties automatically

  I'm fairly new to Word 2007. (Coming more from a Linux/text editor background.) Each time I create a document within Word 2007, I add a set of details to the start of the document. It's the same set of details each time -- Author, Date Created, Date Last Modified, and Status, formatted in the same way each time. I include these bits of information either by inserting Fields (Insert -> Quick Parts -> Insert Field) or Document Properties (Insert -> Quick Parts -> Document Properties -> ...). I'm just wondering how I would go about setting up a macro or a template or something along those lines to insert this information automatically, either by a keypress in an existing document, or each time I start a new document.

• Unresponsive virtual OS

  Hopefully someone has a suggestion on how to resolve this. Configuration Host: Win 2003R2 w/Virtual Server 2005R2 Virtual1: Win 2003R2 w/Sql Server 2005 Virtual2: Win 2003R2 w/WSS 3.0 Situation This past weekend the power went out and took down the servers (no UPS, it's a desktop standing in as dev testing server). Since the servers went down the Virtual2 server after running WSS fairly heavily for an hour to two will become unresponsive via HTTP. If I login via virtual server's remote control I don't get anything beyond a background screen. The CPU counter on the virtual server's master status shows that it isn't doing anything. The only thing I have been able to do is to turn off Virtual2, which loses any state changes. Shutdown commands issue from the virtual server master status are ignored. After restarting Virtual2 the event logs and application logs don't indicate what caused the problem. Anyone have an idea as to how to repair the OS, or maybe what could be the problem? Thanks ahead of time.
