• How to clear contents of cell in Excel?

  I've been sent an Excel spreadsheet with a weird first row. Some of the cells say "Column1", "Column2", etc., but I can't delete their contents. If I select the cell and hit backspace, it goes blank, but when I press return, it goes right back to saying "Column1". I found another answer here that suggested this could be caused by "Cell validation", but the validation window says "Any value", and also "show alert" (and I'm not seeing an alert), so I don't think that's it. The first row is white text on a blue background, if that means anything. The spreadsheet was sent to me in XLSX format, but I tried resaving as XLS and opening that, and it seems to make no difference. This is with the "ribbon" version of Excel (they got rid of the Help menu so I don't know how to see what version number it is!). Thanks!

• How to copy/paste LARGE amounts of text in Windows

  I am not sure if this is more suited for Superuser or Stackoverflow, but here goes... A little bit of background: I'm learning SQL and was trying to make a very large table which I could use for optimization tests. Something generic with random values. I created a little Java program to do just that, and was able to put out a text file with 100,000 lines, each line being an SQL INSERT statement for a new random record. However, with anything much bigger than 100,000 lines, I had problems either opening/using the text file in any text editor, or copying/pasting the text to the windows clipboard and then into SQL Developer so I could execute it as a script. I'm probably overlooking something really obvious, or doing something really stupid. There has got to be a better way to do this, but I couldn't find anything through Google or Stackoverflow or Superuser. Thanks!

  Is it possible to list all folders/files that a given group has explicit permissions on, for a machine running Windows Server 2003? If so, how? It would be nice to see inherited permissions as well, but I could do with just explicit permissions. A little background: I'm trying to update groups/permissions on a test server. One of the groups, Devs, wasn't implemented correctly when it was created, and my goal is to remove it from the system. It has been replaced by LeadDevelopers, which has permissions on many — but naturally not all — of the same folders. I want to make sure that I don't accidentally orphan any folders or cause any other issues when I remove Devs. It did have some admin-level permissions.

" When highlighting search terms, make sure text is contrasting colors :highlight Search guibg=yellow guifg=black (This is for GUI versions of vim, like MacVim or Gvim; for command-line, you'd use ctermbg and ctermfg.) But I sometimes use search as a movement, as in c/\foo - "change from the cursor to the next occurrence of foo." In that case, I don't want all the occurrences of foo to be highlighted. Can I turn off highlighting in cases where search is used as a movement?

• Why does my win7 back ground and theme settings reset to default after every reboot ?

  I have the new ASUS G73. Everything is perfect, but for unknown reasons to me after customizing the background and theme colors, rebooting resets all these back to default (the theme that originally came with the laptop) Is there a way to stop this madness? Is there some kind of configuration reset app that runs on start up for ASUS computers? This is my first ASUS so I don't know what to expect with the factory bloatware. No, I don't feel like re-installing bare-bones windows just to get rid of the bloatware. Everything works fine except for this one little thing :( Sniff.

  Background: Home PC is Windows XP and using Cisco VPN client; home internet connection is fast (20MB) office VPN router is Cisco RV110W; work internet connection is slow (1.5MB) With VPN connected, my home PC internet surfing is very slow. I looked this up in Google and found talk about splitting, tunneling, routing tables, etc., but I'm not sure what/how to do it. Basically, I would like a persistent VPN connection with the office resources, and at the same time, utilize my home high speed internet connection to access the internet.   Windows 7 (Aero) does not offer an option to easily change the taskbar font size. BACKGROUND: I was using an increased DIP 125%. The problem being that many programs, sad to say, Microsoft's included, don't scale or position properly at other than 100%. I've reset the DPI to 100%, and have been able to customize most of my windows settings for easy reading, except the task bar font size In Summary: There are many ways to change the taskbar font color. • How can I automatically lower Spotify playback volume when my Video Editing program makes a sound?

  I'd like to listen to Spotify while I am video editing. This is just casual listening - nothing to do with the editing work. How can I automatically fade out the volume of Spotify when my video editing program plays audio? I often need to hear the video editing audio without the distraction of Spotify playing over the top, but the video editing playback is too on/off/on/off to switch Spotify audio manually each time. Without background music, I get really sick of the repeated playback of the audio clips with only silence inbetween. I suppose what I needd is an app that monitors sound output from 'App A' and reduces the sound output from all others (Apps B, C, D, etc) when something is played.

• TCP > COM1 for receiving messages and displaying on POS display pole

  I currently have a Java Applet running on my web page that communicates to a display pole via COM1. However since the Java update I can no longer run self-signed Java Applets and I figure it would just be easier to send an AJAX request back to the server and have the server send a response to a TCP port on the computer...the computer would need a TCP COM virtual adapter. How do I install a virtual adapter to go from a TCP port to COM1? I've looked into com0com and that is just confusing as hell to me, and I don't see how to connect any ports to COM1. I've tried tcp2com but it doesn't seem to install the service in Windows 7 x64. I've tried com2tcp and the interface seems like it WOULD work (I haven't tested), but I don't want an app running on the desktop...it needs to be a service that runs in the background. So to summarize how it would work: Web page on comp1 sends AJAX request to server Server sends text response to comp1 on port 999 comp1 has virtual COM port listening on port 999, sends data to COM1 pole displays data

• Own website fails to load first time

  I have a website running on a VPS, every time I first try to load the website the connection times out. If I press try again, it loads directly. I'm not sure whether this is a DNS issue or a server issue. As far as I know everything is set up correctly. Also, it has been doing this from the moment I got this server and set up my domain name. And that's about two to three months ago. You may take a look here: http://www.wegotcha.nl/ As you can see at this moment it's just an image, there are no scripts running in the background or anything. The only error Apache gives me is that favicon.ico cannot be found. It's an Apache webserver running on Ubuntu 12.04.1 (newest version) I update all packages almost every day (apt-get update && apt-get upgrade). I am merely an amateur on the area of webservers so any help will be appreciated. :)

  Hi, I have problem with one my conputer, it does not display any website properly. The background clouds on some websites do not show up, the layout of some websites are not properly displayed. And it only happen to only one computer. OS: Windows XP IE: 7 (not working on either IE7 or IE 8) I have tried to add my website as trusted site still that site is not working properly. I also tried Internet Options Advanced ... Check Show images, smart image dithering, enable visual styles in button and controls on webwage. Is there anything else I could do to fix the problem? • Find out what resource is triggering bad password attempt?

  Background: Have a problem at work where I am constantly being locked out of my computer. We are in an environment that has a Domain Controller and we use Active Directory for authentication. By going through my normal workflow while on the phone with Desktop Support we were able to track the bad password attempts that were causing the lockouts to an application: "Eclipse". This is the application I use to do software development. I immediately thought it was a cached password for our SVN server that's the culprit, however the desktop support person couldn't tell me which resource the password attempt was being made against (i.e. which URL for instance). Question: Is there a way that I can monitor bad authentication requests made by an application on my desktop and find out what resource they are attempting it against?

  Some time ago, someone referred me to a cool website called Rapid Rollout. It worked fine until I tried to install an OS onto a netbook. To put it short, it didn't work as well as I expected it to. It also didn't install USB flash drives. I'm trying to build a system (or use a service that would create a system) that would open up the Minecraft Launcher (jar) and show it in full-screen with no background. It would also all have to fit into 8 Gigabytes (as this is the most that I can use right now). How can I accomplish this?

• Problem with Ctrl key on a hp 2510p

  I have a tricky problem with my corporate Compaq hp 2510p, the ctrl key is not working properly at all times. I belive that it is hooked in some filter chain that processes certain ctrl+[key] combinations which is very annoying. I would like some pointers on how to proceed when analysing what application/setup can can cause this kind of keyboard filtering to happen. Anyway some more background info: Ctrl works together with X, C, V. Both in editors and terminals (Ctrl-C, Z etc) but Ctrl-Shift-Esc and Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work. Very annoying so my only option for logging in us using HP's security app. Shift-Arrow works for selecting text, but not Ctrl-shift arrow to select word by word, but Ctrl-Arrow works when moving the caret word by word. Now the strange thing is that everything works ok with an external USB keyboard so it might be the driver, but still, google yields 0 when searching for the problem description. I have vm-ware player installed (but not running it), HP Protect Tools installed, if any of these could affect the keyboard driver.

• Running a command line app with sudo and password automatically on OS X startup

  I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using AppleScript to tell Terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them. • Accidentally deleted the software for MyPassport Essential SE 1TB Hardrive

  I'm posting for a friend of mine. She bought a WD MyPassport Essential SE 1 TB Hard drive the other day. When she plugged in the USB in her lap top, the driver cannot be recognized by the smart ware software. While she was doing a back up of her files, McAfee was running in the background. Since the backup was taking so long to finish, she decided to pause it. She tried to delete the partially backed up files, but instead, she accidentally deleted the entire file in the folder including the pre-installed software. Now, when she tries to start up the MyPassport, the smart ware doesn't show up anymore. Can someone please give us advice what can she do about this? Thank you.

• What is the formula for HughesNet FAP calculation?

  I am somewhat frustrated with the only FAP monitor I have found on the net and discovered because it relies on a running count of bandwidth usage which (1) requires a service in the background; and (2) Tends to get inaccurate over time. Given that there is a diagnostics page on the firmware of the modem that tells the exact usage per hour, I was planning on writing a more accurate version with a better UI. However, it appears that HughesNet keeps the exact formula for calculating whether you are in FAP a secret. I have no idea why they wouldn't be more forthcoming with this information. Wondering if anyone out in SU-land had done some trial and error testing to reverse engineer the formula or had some inside knowledge to share.

  Hey guys, I am very new to linux, and amazon-ec2. I wanted to put a quick server. For some reason, when I sign in with my key pair, it prompts me for a username, I input ec2-user, and I'm in. The problem is that I don't have root access (and can't find the root password). I need to install screen to run the server in the background, and also create a new user, that doesn't have root, to run the server. Neither of which I can do without root.. Any help? The problem is that the application works fine on windows7 and when run on WINXp, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when i copy the application to desktop and run , it runs with no glitch I was facing the same problem on WIN7 too , but it was running as required when i ran it using "Run in Xp mode" and then i applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. the application is built using VC++ 2008 , What might be the problem.

  I've recently lost my window options, had to somehow manipulate my way to Xchat and ask some people how do I get it back (it was metacity --replace, and after I decided to stop the command and run it in background the X was completely useless so I had to do killall -u user). And that was after the internet connection stopped working for some reason (might've been the ISP) ..The thing is, after using linux a long time, I still get the feeling that on dire situations, I don't know the good tricks (stuff like metacity --replace) I feel like a really need like a "rescue" cheatsheet for things like "how to save the X no matter what without pressing reset" and "how to reset the system to "normal state"" "how to connect to the internet through the command line" "how to monitor what the X is doing" (using ubuntu linux 10.04 btw)

  with yesterday's rollout of icloud, it seems those of us who refuse to upgrade to lion are left in the dust as far as it goes with calendar/contact syncing. i have had a mobileME account for years, i use it to sync my calendars, contacts and email between iphone/imac/macbook pro. i am NOT upgrading to lion. with the icloud transition, it seems im only able to access my mobileME email, but my calendars and contacts have stopped syncing. has anyone been able to get sync working with icloud contacts/calendars under 10.6.8? if not, what are some viable options for a seamless, background sync of calendars and contacts between my various devices?
