  Guys; Hope you are fine. I have to make a Web Project (very simple) I will have a DB with 2 tables. One table has 2 fields. From the WebPage I need a Google like search query, for example I have Movie Title and Movie Review on the Table. I need to be able to search those 2 fields like this: "Best Movie" + Action I will need to make a query to the DB to search for the "Best Movie" string togheter plus optional ACTION word on 2 fields of the table. Am I clear??? :) Does somebody know if this has already been made, and if it´s public and free and where to get it :) Thanks in advanced EDIT: My concern is to translate the Google like Symbols ("", +, -, ~) to build a valid query.

• Major performance difference between two Oracle database instances

  I am working with two instances of an Oracle database, call them one and two. two is running on better hardware (hard disk, memory, CPU) than one, and two is one minor version behind one in terms of Oracle version (both are 11g). Both have the exact same table table_name with exactly the same indexes defined. I load 500,000 identical rows into table_name on both instances. I then run, on both instances: delete from table_name; This command takes 30 seconds to complete on one and 40 minutes to complete on two. Doing INSERTs and UPDATEs on the two tables has similar performance differences. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could have such a drastic impact on performance between the two databases?

• Client-side or server-side processing?

  So, I'm new to dynamic web design (my sites have been mostly static with some PHP), and I'm trying to learn the latest technologies in web development (which seems to be AJAX), and I was wondering, if you're transferring a lot of data, is it better to construct the page on the server and "push" it to the user, or is it better to "pull" the data needed and create the HTML around it on the clientside using JavaScript? More specifically, I'm using CodeIgniter as my PHP framework, and jQuery for JavaScript, and if I wanted to display a table of data to the user (dynamically), would it be better to format the HTML using CodeIgniter (create the tables, add CSS classes to elements, etc..), or would it be better to just serve the raw data using JSON and then build it into a table with jQuery? My intuition says to do it clientside, as it would save bandwidth and the page would probably load quicker with the new JavaScript optimizations all these browsers have now, however, then the site would break for someone not using JavaScript... • Hierarchical data table for JSF2 and RichFaces

  I'm using RichFaces on my JSF2 application, and I need a way to have something like a tree-column or tree-table. As far as I know, there's no support for such thing in RichFaces. Something's mentioned for RichFaces 4.0, but the priority of this in their plan isn't promising at all, and I don't think that it's going to be included in 4.0. I know there's a tree table available in IceFaces, but I'd rather not add another library to avoid conflicts and learning curve and ... So, I'm looking for the simplest way that I can achieve the same results with minimum efforts, maybe using sub-tables in RichFaces? Any ideas would be appreciated.

• DbMetal chokes on repeated foreign key references in SQLite - any ideas?

  I've been struggling to get DbMetal to process my SQLite database. I finally isolated the problem. It won't allow a table to have two foreign key references to the same column. For example, a SQLite database with these two tables will fail: CREATE TABLE Person ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, Name TEXT NOT NULL ); CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id) ); I get this error: DbMetal: Sequence contains more than one matching element If I get rid of the second foreign key reference, no error occurs. So, this works: CREATE TABLE Match ( Id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, WinnerPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL REFERENCES Person(Id), LoserPersonId INTEGER NOT NULL ); But I really need both "person" columns to reference the person table. I submitted a bug report for this, but I could use a workaround in the meantime. Any ideas?

  Our centralized IT department has suggested two primary ad hoc query tools for our general user base of approximately 200 staff members: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS) Microsoft Access 2003 Environment The backend database is a read-only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database. The schema is 400+ tables; allowing access to the raw data for our general staff would be a disaster. We will be building an "abstraction layer" over the raw data for our general staff to run ad hoc queries against. The abstraction layer will most likely contain a number of views. A number of users have basic knowledge in Microsoft Access; none have used SSMS. Which of the above tools (or alternative) would be best for a decidedly non-techie user base of approximately 200 people? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, the IT department has suggested teaching people T-SQL so they may use SSMS. Is this reasonable?

• Fastest way to compress a database or .bak file and transfer it

  As per the question title. I wonder if there are special programmes or commands that makes zipping up a .bak file and transferring it super quick. I read abour xp_cmdshell here but I'm not sure about the speed. My .bak file is about 12 gigs at the moment. Related to this is the possibility of using Red Gate's SQL Data Compare to just transfer the differential data across the network pipeline but I have never used SQL Data Compare before and I'm not sure how it goes about doing INSERTS on tables with Primary Keys and such. Also, not sure about the speed. Does anyone have any experience with this programme or similar programmes? Cheers!

  I've designed an EF4 model (quite complex inheritance, lots of small tables incl. multiple self-referencing), generated (table-per-type) a database and inserted some basic data manually. It works fine in an ASP.Net Dynamic Data Entities web application with full automatic scaffolding. But when in a WinForms application using the same model (I share it as a part of a class library) I construct a query and bind a combo box to it (the way it's shown here), I get an InnerException {"Internal .NET Framework Data Provider error 1004, 0, Unable to find property... I've found a question about the same problem here (incl. a sample to reproduce the error) but no answer. I use final Visual Studio 2010, no beta.

  I'm trying to use Linq to SQL to return an IQueryable(of Project) when using foreign key relationships. Using the below schema, I want to be able to pass in a UserId and get all the projects created for the company the user is associated with. DB tables: Projects Projid ProjCreator FK (UserId from UserInfo table) Companyid FK (CompanyID from Companies table) UserInfo UserID PK Companyid FK Companies CompanyId PK Description I can get the iqueryable(of project) when simply getting the ProjectCreator with this: Return (From p In db.Projects _ Where p.ProjectCreator = Me.UserId) But I'm having trouble getting the syntax to get a iqueryable(of projects) when using foreign keys.   hi to all I have two tables employee and timecard, employee table has fields employee_id,firstname,middlename,lastname and timecard table has fields employee_id,time-in,time-out,tc_date_transaction. I want to select all employee records which have the same employee_id with timecard and date is equal with the current date. If there are no records equal with the current date then return also the records of employee even without time-in,timeout and tc_date_transaction. • SQL Server Agent 2005 job runs but no output

  Essentially I have a job which runs in BIDS and as as a stand lone package and while it runs under the SQL Server Agent it doesn't complete properly (no error messages though). The job steps are: 1) Delete all rows from table; 2) Use For each loop to fill up table from Excel spreasheets; 3) Clean up table. I've tried this [MS page][1] (steps 1 & 2), didn't see any need to start changing from Server side security. Also SQLServerCentral.com for [this page][2], no resolution. How can I get error logging or a fix? Note I've reposted this from Server Fault as it's one of those questions that's not pure admin or programming. I have logged in as the proxy account I'm running this under, and the job runs stand alone but complains that the Excel tables are empty?

  I have 12 errors, but some are just pure non existent. Doctype: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> Here's the error report, but the "duplicate specification of attribute "value"" simply isn't true according to my .tpl: {textfield class="quetext" value="Epost*" onblur="if(this.value=='') this.value='Epost*';" onfocus="if(this.value=='Epost*') this.value='';"} Also, does a textarea require the attribute "rows" and "cols"? I thought that was only for tables? And I don't understand what the two errors at the end mean: Line 586, Column 80: Attribute value redefined... Please help! Thanks :) (Sorry if things chop and change, I'm working on the valdiation now, to tidy up as many errors as possible.)

I am trying to do a left outer join on two tables, but I only want to return the results from the first table where the second table does not have a record (null). var agencies = from a in agencyList join aa in joinTable on a.AgencyId equals aa.AgencyId into joined from aa in joined.DefaultIfEmpty() where aa == null) select a; But this does not exclude the non null values of aa, and returns all the records just the same as if the 'where aa == null' was not there. For example, X person saves 10 contacts, Y persons save 15 contacts, z persons save 20 contacts and so on. I cant create seperate tables to save contacts of x,y,z and so on. But i just want to know the alternative method to do that. Is there any easy method to save different cotacts and is there any easy method to retrieve it. • How to store account-specific information in ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. There are two tables like "FIRST_KIND_OF_USERS" and "SECOND_KIND_OF_USERS". Both are mapped to the default aspnet_users table via UserId column. Each of them has it's own integer primary key column like "FirstKindOfUsersId". When a user is trying to add some data to the database, for instance, "Create a new Task" I would like to add a new row in Tasks table with "FirstKindOfUsersId" value. Where should I store or get this value? At the moment I have these possible solutions: Get "FirstKindOfUsersId" value by User.Identity.Name each time; Use SESSION[] for storing these values (Where and when should I save these ones?) Use FormsAuthenticationTicket and create own custom IIdentity class. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1064271/asp-net-mvc-set-custom-iidentity-or-iprincipal) Which approach is better? And if I pick the 3rd one, how to save the necessary data property and at which stage?

  I've read in some posts that having duplicate partitioning key can have a performance impact. I've two tables like: CREATE TABLE "Test1" ( CREATE TABLE "Test2" ( key text, key text, column1 text, name text, value text, age text, PRIMARY KEY (key, column1) ... ) PRIMARY KEY (key, name,age) ) In Test1 column1 will contain column name and value will contain its corresponding value.The main advantage of Test1 is that I can add any number of column/value pairs to it without altering the table by just providing same partitioning key each time. Now my question is how will each of these table schema's impact the read/write performance if I've millions of rows and number of columns can be upto 50 in each row. How will it impact the compaction/repair time if I'm writing duplicate entries frequently?

• How do browsers/PHP handle characters outside the set characterset?

  I'm looking into how characters are handled that are outside of the set characterset for a page. In this case the page is set to iso-8859-1, and the previous programmer decided to escape input using htmlentities($string,ENT_COMPAT). This is then stored into Latin1 tables in Mysql. As the table is set to the same character set as the page, I am wondering if that htmlentities step is needed. I did some experiments on http://floris.workingweb.nl/experiments/characters.php and it seems that for stuff inside Latin1 some characters are escaped, but for example with a Czech name they are not. Is this because those characters are outside of Latin1? If so, then the htmlentities can be removed, as it doesn't help for stuff outside of Latin1 anyway, and for within Latin1 it is not needed as far as I can see now...

  Hello! I have two tables, one for job deadlines, one for describe a job. Each job can take a status and some statuses means the jobs' deadlines must be deleted from the other table. I can easily SELECT the jobs/deadlines that meets my criteria with a LEFT JOIN: SELECT * FROM `deadline` LEFT JOIN `job` ON deadline.job_id = job.job_id WHERE `status` = 'szamlazva' OR `status` = 'szamlazhato' OR `status` = 'fizetve' OR `status` = 'szallitva' OR `status` = 'storno' (status belongs to job table not deadline) But when i'd like to delete these rows from deadline, MySQL throws an error. • MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

  It has been suggested on Amazon docs http://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ among other places, that you can backup your dynamodb tables using Elastic Map Reduce, I have a general understanding of how this could work but I couldn't find any guides or tutorials on this, So my question is how can I automate dynamodb backups (using EMR)? So far, I think I need to create a "streaming" job with a map function that reads the data from dynamodb and a reduce that writes it to S3 and I believe these could be written in Python (or java or a few other languages). Any comments, clarifications, code samples, corrections are appreciated.

(I know they're in there!) • Variable width columns in a table

  I'm using an HTML table for a calendar and I want to fill the cells with various events from my database. Usually they will land on weekends but some will run for long weekend, bank holidays or even the odd week day. How can I get my tables columns to expand and shrink accordingly. I'd like to avoid the use of javascript if possible. If this can't be done I'm going to need a tutorial to help me get my head around how to make div's positioning behave. cheers
