• Function signature-like expressions as C++ template arguments

- by Jeff Lee
I was looking at Don Clugston's FastDelegate mini-library and noticed a weird syntactical trick with the following structure: TemplateClass< void( int, int ) > Object; It almost appears as if a function signature is being used as an argument to a template instance declaration. This technique (whose presence in FastDelegate is apparently due to one Jody Hagins) was used to simplify the declaration of template instances with a semi-arbitrary number of template parameters. To wit, it allowed this something like the following: // A template with one parameter template<typename _T1> struct Object1 { _T1 m_member1; }; // A template with two parameters template<typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object2 { _T1 m_member1; _T2 m_member2; }; // A forward declaration template<typename _Signature> struct Object; // Some derived types using "function signature"-style template parameters template<typename _Dummy, typename _T1> struct Object<_Dummy(_T1)> : public Object1<_T1> {}; template<typename _Dummy, typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object<_Dummy(_T1, _T2)> : public Object2<_T1, _T2> {}; // A. "Vanilla" object declarations Object1<int> IntObjectA; Object2<int, char> IntCharObjectA; // B. Nifty, but equivalent, object declarations typedef void UnusedType; Object< UnusedType(int) > IntObjectB; Object< UnusedType(int, char) > IntCharObjectB; // C. Even niftier, and still equivalent, object declarations #define DeclareObject( ... ) Object< UnusedType( __VA_ARGS__ ) > DeclareObject( int ) IntObjectC; DeclareObject( int, char ) IntCharObjectC; Despite the real whiff of hackiness, I find this kind of spoofy emulation of variadic template arguments to be pretty mind-blowing. The real meat of this trick seems to be the fact that I can pass textual constructs like "Type1(Type2, Type3)" as arguments to templates. So here are my questions: How exactly does the compiler interpret this construct? Is it a function signature? Or, is it just a text pattern with parentheses in it? If the former, then does this imply that any arbitrary function signature is a valid type as far as the template processor is concerned? A follow-up question would be that since the above code sample is valid code, why doesn't the C++ standard just allow you to do something like the following, which is does not compile? template<typename _T1> struct Object { _T1 m_member1; }; // Note the class identifier is also "Object" template<typename _T1, typename _T2> struct Object { _T1 m_member1; _T2 m_member2; }; Object<int> IntObject; Object<int, char> IntCharObject;

• overloaded stream insetion operator with a vector

- by julz666
hi, i'm trying to write an overloaded stream insertion operator for a class who's only member is a vector. i dont really know what i'm doing. (lets make that clear) it's a vector of "Points" which is a struct containing two doubles. i figure what i want is to insert user input (a bunch of doubles) into a stream that i then send to a modifier method? i keep working off other stream insertion examples such as... std::ostream& operator<< (std::ostream& o, Fred const& fred) { return o << fred.i_; } but when i try a similar..... istream & operator >> (istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr) { inStream >> ws; inStream >> vertStr.vertices; return inStream; } i get an error "no match for operator etc etc. if i leave off the .vertices it compiles but i figure it's not right? (vertices is the name of my vector ) and even if it is right, i dont actually know what syntax to use in my driver to use it? also not %100 on what my modifier method needs to look like. here's my Polygon class //header #ifndef POLYGON_H #define POLYGON_H #include "Segment.h" #include <vector> class Polygon { friend std::istream & operator >> (std::istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr); public: //Constructor Polygon(const Point &theVerts); //Default Constructor Polygon(); //Copy Constructor Polygon(const Polygon &polyCopy); //Accessor/Modifier methods inline std::vector<Point> getVector() const {return vertices;} //Return number of Vector elements inline int sizeOfVect() const {return (int) vertices.capacity();} //add Point elements to vector inline void setVertices(const Point &theVerts){vertices.push_back (theVerts);} private: std::vector<Point> vertices; }; #endif //Body using namespace std; #include "Polygon.h" // Constructor Polygon::Polygon(const Point &theVerts) { vertices.push_back (theVerts); } //Copy Constructor Polygon::Polygon(const Polygon &polyCopy) { vertices = polyCopy.vertices; } //Default Constructor Polygon::Polygon(){} istream & operator >> (istream &inStream, Polygon &vertStr) { inStream >> ws; inStream >> vertStr; return inStream; } any help greatly appreciated, sorry to be so vague, a lecturer has just kind of given us a brief example of stream insertion then left us on our own thanks. oh i realise there are probably many other problems that need fixing

• C++, using stack.h read a string, then display it in reverse

- by user1675108
For my current assignment, I have to use the following header file, #ifndef STACK_H #define STACK_H template <class T, int n> class STACK { private: T a[n]; int counter; public: void MakeStack() { counter = 0; } bool FullStack() { return (counter == n) ? true : false ; } bool EmptyStack() { return (counter == 0) ? true : false ; } void PushStack(T x) { a[counter] = x; counter++; } T PopStack() { counter--; return a[counter]; } }; #endif To write a program that will take a sentence, store it into the "stack", and then display it in reverse, and I have to allow the user to repeat this process as much as they want. The thing is, I am NOT allowed to use arrays (otherwise I wouldn't need help with this), and am finding myself stumped. To give an idea of what I am attempting, here is my code as of posting, which obviously does not work fully but is simply meant to give an idea of the assignment. #include <iostream> #include <cstring> #include <ctime> #include "STACK.h" using namespace std; int main(void) { auto time_t a; auto STACK<char, 256> s; auto string curStr; auto int i; // Displays the current time and date time(&a); cout << "Today is " << ctime(&a) << endl; s.MakeStack(); cin >> curStr; i = 0; do { s.PushStack(curStr[i]); i++; } while (s.FullStack() == false); do { cout << s.PopStack(); } while (s.EmptyStack() == false); return 0; } // end of "main" **UPDATE This is my code currently #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <ctime> #include "STACK.h" using namespace std; time_t a; STACK<char, 256> s; string curStr; int i; int n; // Displays the current time and date time(&a); cout << "Today is " << ctime(&a) << endl; s.MakeStack(); getline(cin, curStr); i = 0; n = curStr.size(); do { s.PushStack(curStr[i++]); i++; }while(i < n); do { cout << s.PopStack(); }while( !(s.EmptyStack()) ); return 0;

• (static initialization order?!) problems with factory pattern

- by smerlin
Why does following code raise an exception (in createObjects call to map::at) alternativly the code (and its output) can be viewed here intererestingly the code works as expected if the commented lines are uncommented with both microsoft and gcc compiler (see here), this even works with initMap as ordinary static variable instead of static getter. The only reason for this i can think of is that the order of initialization of the static registerHelper_ object (factory_helper_)and the std::map object (initMap) are wrong, however i cant see how that could happen, because the map object is constructed on first usage and thats in factory_helper_ constructor, so everything should be alright shouldnt it ? I am even more suprised that those doNothing() lines fix the issue, because that call to doNothing() would happen after the critical section (which currently fails) is passed anyway. EDIT: debugging showed, that without the call to factory_helper_.doNothing(), the constructor of factory_helper_ is never called. #include <iostream> #include <string> #include  #define FACTORY_CLASS(classtype) \ extern const char classtype##_name_[] = #classtype; \ class classtype : FactoryBase<classtype,classtype##_name_> namespace detail_ { class registerHelperBase { public: registerHelperBase(){} protected: static std::map<std::string, void * (*)(void)>& getInitMap() { static std::map<std::string, void * (*)(void)>* initMap = 0; if(!initMap) initMap= new std::map<std::string, void * (*)(void)>(); return *initMap; } }; template<class TParent, const char* ClassName> class registerHelper_ : registerHelperBase { static registerHelper_ help_; public: //void doNothing(){} registerHelper_(){ getInitMap()[std::string(ClassName)]=&TParent::factory_init_; } }; template<class TParent, const char* ClassName> registerHelper_<TParent,ClassName> registerHelper_<TParent,ClassName>::help_; } class Factory : detail_::registerHelperBase { private: Factory(); public: static void* createObject(const std::string& objclassname) { return getInitMap().at(objclassname)(); } }; template <class TClass, const char* ClassName> class FactoryBase { private: static detail_::registerHelper_<FactoryBase<TClass,ClassName>,ClassName> factory_helper_; static void* factory_init_(){ return new TClass();} public: friend class detail_::registerHelper_<FactoryBase<TClass,ClassName>,ClassName>; FactoryBase(){ //factory_helper_.doNothing(); } virtual ~FactoryBase(){}; }; template <class TClass, const char* ClassName> detail_::registerHelper_<FactoryBase<TClass,ClassName>,ClassName> FactoryBase<TClass,ClassName>::factory_helper_; FACTORY_CLASS(Test) { public: Test(){} }; int main(int argc, char** argv) { try { Test* test = (Test*) Factory::createObject("Test"); } catch(const std::exception& ex) { std::cerr << "caught std::exception: "<< ex.what() << std::endl; } #ifdef _MSC_VER system("pause"); #endif return 0; }

• How do I maximize code coverage?

- by naivedeveloper
Hey all, the following is a snippet of code taken from the unix ptx utility. I'm attempting to maximize code coverage on this utility, but I am unable to reach the indicated portion of code. Admittedly, I'm not as strong in my C skills as I used to be. The portion of code is indicated with comments, but it is towards the bottom of the block. if (used_length == allocated_length) { allocated_length += (1 << SWALLOW_REALLOC_LOG); block->start = (char *) xrealloc (block->start, allocated_length); } Any help interpreting the indicated portion in order to cover that block would be greatly appreciated. /* Reallocation step when swallowing non regular files. The value is not the actual reallocation step, but its base two logarithm. */ #define SWALLOW_REALLOC_LOG 12 static void swallow_file_in_memory (const char *file_name, BLOCK *block) { int file_handle; /* file descriptor number */ struct stat stat_block; /* stat block for file */ size_t allocated_length; /* allocated length of memory buffer */ size_t used_length; /* used length in memory buffer */ int read_length; /* number of character gotten on last read */ /* As special cases, a file name which is NULL or "-" indicates standard input, which is already opened. In all other cases, open the file from its name. */ bool using_stdin = !file_name || !*file_name || strcmp (file_name, "-") == 0; if (using_stdin) file_handle = STDIN_FILENO; else if ((file_handle = open (file_name, O_RDONLY)) < 0) error (EXIT_FAILURE, errno, "%s", file_name); /* If the file is a plain, regular file, allocate the memory buffer all at once and swallow the file in one blow. • Adding to database with multiple text boxes

What I am trying to do with this script is allow users to update a url for their websites, and since each user isn't going to have the same amount of websites is is hard for me to just add $_POST['website'] for each of these. • C - circular character buffer w/ pthreads

- by Matt
I have a homework assignment where I have to implement a circular buffer and add and remove chars with separate threads: #include <pthread.h> #include <stdio.h> #define QSIZE 10 pthread_cond_t full,/* count == QSIZE */ empty,/* count == 0 */ ready; pthread_mutex_t m, n; /* implements critical section */ unsigned int iBuf, /* tail of circular queue */ oBuf; /* head of circular queue */ int count; /* count characters */ char buf [QSIZE]; /* the circular queue */ void Put(char s[]) {/* add "ch"; wait if full */ pthread_mutex_lock(&m); int size = sizeof(s)/sizeof(char); printf("size: %d", size); int i; for(i = 0; i < size; i++) { while (count >= QSIZE) pthread_cond_wait(&full, &m);/* is there empty slot? */ buf[iBuf] = s[i]; /* store the character */ iBuf = (iBuf+1) % QSIZE; /* increment mod QSIZE */ count++; if (count == 1) pthread_cond_signal(&empty);/* new character available */ } pthread_mutex_unlock(&m); } char Get() {/* remove "ch" from queue; wait if empty */ char ch; pthread_mutex_lock(&m); while (count <= 0) pthread_cond_wait(&empty, &m);/* is a character present? */ ch = buf[oBuf]; /* retrieve from the head of the queue */ oBuf = (oBuf+1) % QSIZE; count--; if (count == QSIZE-1) pthread_cond_signal(&full);/* signal existence of a slot */ pthread_mutex_unlock(&m); return ch; } void * p1(void *arg) { int i; for (i = 0; i < 5; i++) { Put("hella"); } } void * p2(void *arg) { int i; for (i = 0; i < 5; i++) { Put("goodby"); } } int main() { pthread_t t1, t2; void *r1, *r2; oBuf = 0; iBuf = 0; count=0; /* all slots are empty */ pthread_cond_init(&full, NULL); pthread_cond_init(&empty, NULL); pthread_mutex_init(&m, NULL); pthread_create(&t1, NULL, p1, &r1); pthread_create(&t2, NULL, p2, &r2); printf("Main"); char c; int i = 0; while (i < 55) { c = Get(); printf("%c",c); i++; } pthread_join(t1, &r1); pthread_join(t2, &r2); return 0; } I shouldn't have to change the logic much at all, the requirements are pretty specific. I think my problem lies in the Put() method. I think the first thread is going in and blocking the critical section and causing a deadlock. I was thinking I should make a scheduling attribute? Of course I could be wrong. I am pretty new to pthreads and concurrent programming, so I could really use some help spotting my error.

• Counting leaf nodes in hierarchical tree

- by timn
This code fills a tree with values based their depths. But when traversing the tree, I cannot manage to determine the actual number of children. node-cnt is always 0. I've already tried node-parent-cnt but that gives me lots of warnings in Valgrind. Anyway, is the tree type I've chosen even appropriate for my purpose? #include <string.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #ifndef NULL #define NULL ((void *) 0) #endif // ---- typedef struct _Tree_Node { // data ptr void *p; // number of nodes int cnt; struct _Tree_Node *nodes; // parent nodes struct _Tree_Node *parent; } Tree_Node; typedef struct { Tree_Node root; } Tree; void Tree_Init(Tree *this) { this->root.p = NULL; this->root.cnt = 0; this->root.nodes = NULL; this->root.parent = NULL; } Tree_Node* Tree_AddNode(Tree_Node *node) { if (node->cnt == 0) { node->nodes = malloc(sizeof(Tree_Node)); } else { node->nodes = realloc( node->nodes, (node->cnt + 1) * sizeof(Tree_Node) ); } Tree_Node *res = &node->nodes[node->cnt]; res->p = NULL; res->cnt = 0; res->nodes = NULL; res->parent = node; node->cnt++; return res; } // ---- void handleNode(Tree_Node *node, int depth) { int j = depth; printf("\n"); while (j--) { printf(" "); } printf("depth=%d ", depth); if (node->p == NULL) { goto out; } printf("value=%s cnt=%d", node->p, node->cnt); out: for (int i = 0; i < node->cnt; i++) { handleNode(&node->nodes[i], depth + 1); } } Tree tree; int curdepth; Tree_Node *curnode; void add(int depth, char *s) { printf("%s: depth (%d) > curdepth (%d): %d\n", s, depth, curdepth, depth > curdepth); if (depth > curdepth) { curnode = Tree_AddNode(curnode); Tree_Node *node = Tree_AddNode(curnode); node->p = malloc(strlen(s)); memcpy(node->p, s, strlen(s)); curdepth++; } else { while (curdepth - depth > 0) { if (curnode->parent == NULL) { printf("Illegal nesting\n"); return; } curnode = curnode->parent; curdepth--; } Tree_Node *node = Tree_AddNode(curnode); node->p = malloc(strlen(s)); memcpy(node->p, s, strlen(s)); } } void main(void) { Tree_Init(&tree); curnode = &tree.root; curdepth = 0; add(0, "1"); add(1, "1.1"); add(2, "1.1.1"); add(3, "1.1.1.1"); add(4, "1.1.1.1.1"); add(2, "1.1.2"); add(0, "2"); handleNode(&tree.root, 0); }

• globals and locals in python exec()

- by hawkettc
Hi, I'm trying to run a piece of python code using exec. my_code = """ class A(object): pass print 'locals: %s' % locals() print 'A: %s' % A class B(object): a_ref = A """ global_env = {} local_env = {} my_code_AST = compile(my_code, "My Code", "exec") exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) print local_env which results in the following output locals: {'A': <class 'A'>} A: <class 'A'> Traceback (most recent call last): File "python_test.py", line 16, in <module> exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) File "My Code", line 8, in <module> File "My Code", line 9, in B NameError: name 'A' is not defined However, if I change the code to this - my_code = """ class A(object): pass print 'locals: %s' % locals() print 'A: %s' % A class B(A): pass """ global_env = {} local_env = {} my_code_AST = compile(my_code, "My Code", "exec") exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) print local_env then it works fine - giving the following output - locals: {'A': <class 'A'>} A: <class 'A'> {'A': <class 'A'>, 'B': <class 'B'>} Clearly A is present and accessible - what's going wrong in the first piece of code? I'm using 2.6.5, cheers, Colin * UPDATE 1 * If I check the locals() inside the class - my_code = """ class A(object): pass print 'locals: %s' % locals() print 'A: %s' % A class B(object): print locals() a_ref = A """ global_env = {} local_env = {} my_code_AST = compile(my_code, "My Code", "exec") exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) print local_env Then it becomes clear that locals() is not the same in both places - locals: {'A': <class 'A'>} A: <class 'A'> {'__module__': '__builtin__'} Traceback (most recent call last): File "python_test.py", line 16, in <module> exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) File "My Code", line 8, in <module> File "My Code", line 10, in B NameError: name 'A' is not defined However, if I do this, there is no problem - def f(): class A(object): pass class B(object): a_ref = A f() print 'Finished OK' * UPDATE 2 * ok, so the docs here - http://docs.python.org/reference/executionmodel.html 'A class definition is an executable statement that may use and define names. These references follow the normal rules for name resolution. The namespace of the class definition becomes the attribute dictionary of the class. Names defined at the class scope are not visible in methods.' It seems to me that 'A' should be made available as a free variable within the executable statement that is the definition of B, and this happens when we call f(), but not when we use exec(). This can be more easily shown with the following - my_code = """ class A(object): pass print 'locals in body: %s' % locals() print 'A: %s' % A def f(): print 'A in f: %s' % A f() class B(object): a_ref = A """ which outputs locals in body: {'A': <class 'A'>} A: <class 'A'> Traceback (most recent call last): File "python_test.py", line 20, in <module> exec(my_code_AST, global_env, local_env) File "My Code", line 11, in <module> File "My Code", line 9, in f NameError: global name 'A' is not defined So I guess the new question is - why aren't those locals being exposed as free variables in functions and class definitions - it seems like a pretty standard closure scenario.

• Doxygen for C++ template class member specialization

- by Ziv
When I write class templates, and need to fully-specialize members of those classes, Doxygen doesn't recognize the specialization - it documents only the generic definition, or (if there are only specializations) the last definition. Here's a simple example: ===MyClass.hpp=== #ifndef MYCLASS_HPP #define MYCLASS_HPP template<class T> class MyClass{ public: static void foo(); static const int INT_CONST; static const T TTYPE_CONST; }; /* generic definitions */ template<class T> void MyClass<T>::foo(){ printf("Generic foo\n"); } template<class T> const int MyClass<T>::INT_CONST = 5; /* specialization declarations */ template<> void MyClass<double>::foo(); template<> const int MyClass<double>::INT_CONST; template<> const double MyClass<double>::TTYPE_CONST; template<> const char MyClass<char>::TTYPE_CONST; #endif === MyClass.cpp === #include "MyClass.hpp" /* specialization definitions */ template<> void MyClass<double>::foo(){ printf("Specialized double foo\n"); } template<> const int MyClass<double>::INT_CONST = 10; template<> const double MyClass<double>::TTYPE_CONST = 3.141; template<> const char MyClass<char>::TTYPE_CONST = 'a'; So in this case, foo() will be documented as printing "Generic foo," INT_CONST will be documented as set to 5, with no mention of the specializations, and TTYPE_CONST will be documented as set to 'a', with no mention of 3.141 and no indication that 'a' is a specialized case. I need to be able to document the specializations - either within the documentation for MyClass<T>, or on new pages for MyClass<double>, MyClass<char>. How do I do this? Can Doxygen even handle this? Am I possibly doing something wrong in the declarations/code structure that's keeping Doxygen from understanding what I want? I should note two related cases: A) For templated functions, specialization works fine, e.g.: /* functions that are global/in a namespace */ template<class T> void foo(){ printf("Generic foo\n"); } template<> void foo<double>(){ printf("Specialized double foo\n"); } This will document both foo() and foo(). B) If I redeclare the entire template, i.e. template<> class MyClass<double>{...};, then MyClass<double> will get its own documentation page, as a seperate class. But this means actually declaring an entirely new class - there is no relation between MyClass<T> and MyClass<double> if MyClass<double> itself is declared. So I'd have to redeclare the class and all its members, and repeat all the definitions of class members, specialized for MyClass<double>, all to make it appear as though they're using the same template. Very awkward, feels like a kludge solution. Suggestions? Thanks much :) --Ziv

• C# - Cannot implicitly convert type List<Product> to List<IProduct>

I have a project with all my Interface definitions: RivWorks.Interfaces I have a project where I define concrete implmentations: RivWorks.DTO I've done this hundreds of times before but for some reason I am getting this error now: Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Collections.Generic.List<RivWorks.DTO.Product>' to 'System.Collections.Generic.List<RivWorks.Interfaces.DataContracts.IProduct>' Interface definition (shortened): namespace RivWorks.Interfaces.DataContracts { public interface IProduct { [XmlElement] [DataMember(Name = "ID", Order = 0)] Guid ProductID { get; set; } [XmlElement] [DataMember(Name = "altID", Order = 1)] long alternateProductID { get; set; } [XmlElement] [DataMember(Name = "CompanyId", Order = 2)] Guid CompanyId { get; set; } ... } } Concrete class definition (shortened): namespace RivWorks.DTO { [DataContract(Name = "Product", Namespace = "http://rivworks.com/DataContracts/2009/01/15")] public class Product : IProduct { #region Constructors public Product() { } public Product(Guid ProductID) { Initialize(ProductID); } public Product(string SKU, Guid CompanyID) { using (RivEntities _dbRiv = new RivWorksStore(stores.RivConnString).NegotiationEntities()) { model.Product rivProduct = _dbRiv.Product.Where(a => a.SKU == SKU && a.Company.CompanyId == CompanyID).FirstOrDefault(); if (rivProduct != null) Initialize(rivProduct.ProductId); } } #endregion #region Private Methods private void Initialize(Guid ProductID) { using (RivEntities _dbRiv = new RivWorksStore(stores.RivConnString).NegotiationEntities()) { var localProduct = _dbRiv.Product.Include("Company").Where(a => a.ProductId == ProductID).FirstOrDefault(); if (localProduct != null) { var companyDetails = _dbRiv.vwCompanyDetails.Where(a => a.CompanyId == localProduct.Company.CompanyId).FirstOrDefault(); if (companyDetails != null) { if (localProduct.alternateProductID != null && localProduct.alternateProductID > 0) { using (FeedsEntities _dbFeed = new FeedStoreReadOnly(stores.FeedConnString).ReadOnlyEntities()) { var feedProduct = _dbFeed.AutoWithImage.Where(a => a.ClientID == companyDetails.ClientID && a.AutoID == localProduct.alternateProductID).FirstOrDefault(); if (companyDetails.useZeroGspPath.Value || feedProduct.GuaranteedSalePrice > 0) // kab: 2010.04.07 - new rules... Any ideas why this might be happening? (And I am sure it is something trivially simple!)

• local user cannot access vsftpd server

- by Zloy Smiertniy
I'm currently running a vsftpd server and I added the necessary configurations in vsftpd.conf so that local users can use clients like FileZilla to manage their homes in a server. I found out that only users in the sudoers list access without a problem only they can't download the files, but users that are not sudoers cannot even access their homes from a client but they can access by a web browser using the FTP protocol and they can only access their home directories (as intented) Im running a fedora 14 on my server and my vsftpd.conf looks like this: # Example config file /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf # # The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file # loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable. # Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults. # # READ THIS: This example file is NOT an exhaustive list of vsftpd options. # Please read the vsftpd.conf.5 manual page to get a full idea of vsftpd's # capabilities. # # Allow anonymous FTP? • Future of VB.NET? [closed]

- by Alex Yeung
Hi all, I worked with C# for years. Last year, I changed my job and the company use VB.NET. Of course, theoretically C# and VB.NET are very similar and I easily adapted. However, I have worked for VB.NET for 1 year. I cannot see any future of VB.NET. As a programming language, it is so foo. Here is a list of what C# can do but VB.NET cannot Case insensitive variables how to think a new variable name? If I have a property called FolderPath, i need to establish another private variable called _folderPath or m_folderPath. In C#, FolderPath and folderPath are two variables. Moreover, it gets compile error if variable name is same as a class name. For example Dim guid = Guid.NewGuid(). (What the...) Again, I need to think a new variable name. Adhoc scope In C#, we could use {...} to create a adhoc scope and all resource in {...} will not affect the code outside. However there is not such syntax in VB.NET. I could only use If True Then and End If to make a local scope which is so unclear. In-Method Region Sometime, it is unavoidable to have a long long method. VB.NET does not support in-method region. I always need to scroll down for 1000 lines. It wastes my time. No multi-line string definition In C#, we could var s = @"..." to define a multi-line string. In VB.NET there is no direct method to do that. The indirect way is use XML-literal string. Dim s = ....Value. However it is unclear. No block comment In C#, we have line comment // and block comment /* ... */. However in VB.NET we only have line comment which is a very big trouble for me. No statement end symbol Statements are separated by line break in VB.NET; while statements are separated by ; in C#. Underscore I think many people know underscore _ is continue statement symbol. I really disagree with that. I know MS VB.NET language team is going to remove the underscore syntax from VB.NET. However what can we do now? Although underscore is removed in the future, what's the advantage of that? I cannot see any advantage! With scope With scope is an evil scope. Although it allows shorter statement, it is hard to trace. Default Namesapce in project level It is a nightmare for me. The only advantage of VB.NET is property initialization. I think C# cannot do that (correct me if I am wrong.) Public Property ThisIsMyProperty As String = "MyValue" Remarks: I don't think optional method parameters is an advantage of OOP. By those disadvantages, I cannot see the future of VB.NET. Anyone sees the future of VB.NET?

• What is the best way to solve an Objective-C namespace collision?

- by Mecki
Objective-C has no namespaces; it's much like C, everything is within one global namespace. Common practice is to prefix classes with initials, e.g. if you are working at IBM, you could prefix them with "IBM"; if you work for Microsoft, you could use "MS"; and so on. Sometimes the initials refer to the project, e.g. Adium prefixes classes with "AI" (as there is no company behind it of that you could take the initials). Apple prefixes classes with NS and says this prefix is reserved for Apple only. So far so well. But appending 2 to 4 letters to a class name in front is a very, very limited namespace. E.g. MS or AI could have an entirely different meanings (AI could be Artificial Intelligence for example) and some other developer might decide to use them and create an equally named class. Bang, namespace collision. Okay, if this is a collision between one of your own classes and one of an external framework you are using, you can easily change the naming of your class, no big deal. But what if you use two external frameworks, both frameworks that you don't have the source to and that you can't change? Your application links with both of them and you get name conflicts. How would you go about solving these? What is the best way to work around them in such a way that you can still use both classes? In C you can work around these by not linking directly to the library, instead you load the library at runtime, using dlopen(), then find the symbol you are looking for using dlsym() and assign it to a global symbol (that you can name any way you like) and then access it through this global symbol. E.g. if you have a conflict because some C library has a function named open(), you could define a variable named myOpen and have it point to the open() function of the library, thus when you want to use the system open(), you just use open() and when you want to use the other one, you access it via the myOpen identifier. Is something similar possible in Objective-C and if not, is there any other clever, tricky solution you can use resolve namespace conflicts? Any ideas? Update: Just to clarify this: answers that suggest how to avoid namespace collisions in advance or how to create a better namespace are certainly welcome; however, I will not accept them as the answer since they don't solve my problem. I have two libraries and their class names collide. I can't change them; I don't have the source of either one. The collision is already there and tips on how it could have been avoided in advance won't help anymore. I can forward them to the developers of these frameworks and hope they choose a better namespace in the future, but for the time being I'm searching a solution to work with the frameworks right now within a single application. Any solutions to make this possible?

• Constructor ambiguous quesiton

- by Crystal
I'm trying to create a simple date class, but I get an error on my main file that says, "call of overloaded Date() is ambiguous." I'm not sure why since I thought as long as I had different parameters for my constructor, I was ok. Here is my code: header file: #ifndef DATE_H #define DATE_H using std::string; class Date { public: static const int monthsPerYear = 12; // num of months in a yr Date(int = 1, int = 1, int = 1900); // default constructor Date(); // uses system time to create object void print() const; // print date in month/day/year format ~Date(); // provided to confirm destruction order string getMonth(int month) const; // gets month in text format private: int month; // 1 - 12 int day; // 1 - 31 int year; // any year int checkDay(int) const; }; #endif .cpp file #include <iostream> #include <iomanip> #include <string> #include <ctime> #include "Date.h" using namespace std; Date::Date() { time_t seconds = time(NULL); struct tm* t = localtime(&seconds); month = t->tm_mon; day = t->tm_mday; year = t->tm_year; } Date::Date(int mn, int dy, int yr) { if (mn > 0 && mn <= monthsPerYear) month = mn; else { month = 1; // invalid month set to 1 cout << "Invalid month (" << mn << ") set to 1.\n"; } year = yr; // could validate yr day = checkDay(dy); // validate the day // output Date object to show when its constructor is called cout << "Date object constructor for date "; print(); cout << endl; } void Date::print() const { string str; cout << month << '/' << day << '/' << year << '\n'; // new code for HW2 cout << setfill('0') << setw(3) << day; // prints in ddd cout << " " << year << '\n'; // yyyy format str = getMonth(month); // prints in month (full word), day, year cout << str << " " << day << ", " << year << '\n'; } and my main.cpp #include <iostream> #include "Date.h" using std::cout; int main() { Date date1(4, 30, 1980); date1.print(); cout << '\n'; Date date2; date2.print(); }

• Using inheritance and polymorphism to solve a common game problem

- by Barry Brown
I have two classes; let's call them Ogre and Wizard. (All fields are public to make the example easier to type in.) public class Ogre { int weight; int height; int axeLength; } public class Wizard { int age; int IQ; int height; } In each class I can create a method called, say, battle() that will determine who will win if an Ogre meets and Ogre or a Wizard meets a Wizard. Here's an example. If an Ogre meets an Ogre, the heavier one wins. But if the weight is the same, the one with the longer axe wins. public Ogre battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else if (this.axeLength > o.axeLength) return this; else if (this.axeLength < o.axeLength) return o; else return this; // default case } We can make a similar method for Wizards. But what if a Wizard meets an Ogre? We could of course make a method for that, comparing, say, just the heights. public Wizard battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else return this; } And we'd make a similar one for Ogres that meet Wizard. But things get out of hand if we have to add more character types to the program. This is where I get stuck. One obvious solution is to create a Character class with the common traits. Ogre and Wizard inherit from the Character and extend it to include the other traits that define each one. public class Character { int height; public Character battle(Character c) { if (this.height > c.height) return this; else if (this.height < c.height) return c; else return this; } } Is there a better way to organize the classes? I've looked at the strategy pattern and the mediator pattern, but I'm not sure how either of them (if any) could help here. My goal is to reach some kind of common battle method, so that if an Ogre meets an Ogre it uses the Ogre-vs-Ogre battle, but if an Ogre meets a Wizard, it uses a more generic one. Further, what if the characters that meet share no common traits? How can we decide who wins a battle?

• Problems manipulating strings through a stdcall to a dll

- by ibiza
I need to create a C++ dll that will be called from another program through stdcall. What is needed : the caller program will pass an array of string to the dll and the dll should change the string values in the array. The caller program will then continue to work with these string values that came from the dll. I made a simple test project and I am obviously missing something... Here is my test C++ dll : #ifndef _DLL_H_ #define _DLL_H_ #include <string> #include <iostream> struct strStruct { int len; char* string; }; __declspec (dllexport) int __stdcall TestFunction(strStruct* s) { std::cout << "Just got in dll" << std::endl; std::cout << s[0].string << std::endl; //////std::cout << s[1].string << std::endl; /* char str1[] = "foo"; strcpy(s[0].string, str1); s[0].len = 3; char str2[] = "foobar"; strcpy(s[1].string, str2); s[1].len = 6; */ //std::cout << s[0].string << std::endl; //std::cout << s[1].string << std::endl; std::cout << "Getting out of dll" << std::endl; return 1; } #endif and here is a simple C# program that I am using to test my test dll : using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; namespace TestStr { class Program { [DllImport("TestStrLib.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Ansi, CallingConvention = CallingConvention.StdCall)] public static extern int TestFunction(string[] s); static void Main(string[] args) { string[] test = new string[2] { "a1a1a1a1a1", "b2b2b2b2b2" }; Console.WriteLine(test[0]); Console.WriteLine(test[1]); TestFunction(test); Console.WriteLine(test[0]); Console.WriteLine(test[1]); Console.ReadLine(); } } } And here is the output produced : a1a1a1a1a1 b2b2b2b2b2 Just got in dll b2b2b2b2b2 Getting out of dll a1a1a1a1a1 b2b2b2b2b2 I have some questions : 1) Why is it outputting the element in the second position of the array rather than in the first position?? 2) If I uncomment the line commented with ////// in the dll file, the program crashes. Why? 3) Obviously I wanted to do more things in the dll (the parts in /* */) than what it does right now, but I am blocked by the first 2 questions... Thanks for all your help

• How does this main domain have a CNAME record?

• FMOD surround sound openframeworks

- by user1449425
Ok, I hope I don't mess this up, I have had a look for some answers but can't find anything. I am trying to make a simple sampler in openframeworks using the FMOD sound player in 3D mode. I can make a single instance work fine (recording a new file using libsndfilerecorder and then playing it back and moving it in surround. However I want to have 8 layers of looping audio that I can record and replace one layer at a time in a live show. I get a lot of problems as soon as I have more than 1 layer. The first part of my question relates to the FMOD 3D modes, it is listener relative, so I have to define the position of my listener for every sound (I would prefer to have head relative mode but I cannot make this work at all. Again this works fine when I am using a single player but with multiple players only the last listener I update actually works. The main problem I have is that when I use multiple players I get distortion, and often a mix of other currently playing sounds (even when the microphone cannot hear them) in my new recordings. Is there an incompatability with libsndfilerecorder and FMOD? Here I initialise the players for (int i=0; i<CHANNEL_COUNT; i++) { lvelocity[i].set(1, 1, 1); lup[i].set(0, 1, 0); lforward[i].set(0, 0, 1); lposition[i].set(0, 0, 0); sposition[i].set(3, 3, 2); svelocity[i].set(1, 1, 1); //player[1].initializeFmod(); //player[i].loadSound( "1.wav" ); player[i].setVolume(0.75); player[i].setMultiPlay(true); player[i].play(); setupHold[i]==false; recording[i]=false; channelHasFile[i]=false; settingOsc[i]=false; } When I am recording I unload the file and make sure the positions of the player that is not loaded are not updating. void fmodApp::recordingStart( int recordingId ){ if (recording[recordingId]==false) { setupHold[recordingId]=true; //this stops the position updating cout<<"Start recording Channel " + ofToString(recordingId+1)+" setup hold is true \n"; pt=getDateName() +".wav"; player[recordingId].stop(); player[recordingId].unloadSound(); audioRecorder.setup(pt); audioRecorder.setFormat(SF_FORMAT_WAV | SF_FORMAT_PCM_16); recording[recordingId]=true; //this starts the libSndFIleRecorder } else { cout<<"Channel" + ofToString(recordingId+1)+" is already recording \n"; } } And I stop the recording like this. void fmodApp::recordingEnd( int recordingId ){ if (recording[recordingId]=true) { recording[recordingId]=false; cout<<"Stop recording" + ofToString(recordingId+1)+" \n"; audioRecorder.finalize(); audioRecorder.close(); player[recordingId].loadSound(pt); setupHold[recordingId]=false; channelHasFile[recordingId]=true; cout<< "File recorded channel " + ofToString(recordingId+1) + " file is called " + pt + "\n"; } else { cout << "Sorry track" + ofToString(recordingId+1) + "is not recording"; } } I am careful not to interrupt the updating process but I cannot see where I am going wrong. Many Thanks

• Blackberry XML Parsing Application not working

- by Nirmal
Hello All... I found one sample application from the Blackberry knowledgebase. From that application I have put that sample application on my eclipse plugin, and the code is as follows : import javax.microedition.io.*; import net.rim.device.api.ui.*; import net.rim.device.api.ui.component.*; import net.rim.device.api.ui.container.*; import net.rim.device.api.system.*; import net.rim.device.api.xml.parsers.*; import org.w3c.dom.*; import org.xml.sax.*; class XML_Parsing_Sample extends UiApplication { // creating a member variable for the MainScreen MainScreen _screen = new MainScreen(); // string variables to store the values of the XML document String _node, _element; Connection _connectionthread; public static void main(String arg[]) { XML_Parsing_Sample application = new XML_Parsing_Sample(); // create a new instance of the application // and start the application on the event thread application.enterEventDispatcher(); } public XML_Parsing_Sample() { _screen.setTitle("XML Parsing");// setting title _screen.add(new RichTextField("Requesting.....")); _screen.add(new SeparatorField()); pushScreen(_screen); // creating a screen // creating a connection thread to run in the background _connectionthread = new Connection(); _connectionthread.start();// starting the thread operation } public void updateField(String node, String element) { // receiving the parsed node and its value from the thread // and updating it here // so it can be displayed on the screen String title = "My App"; _screen.add(new RichTextField(node + " : " + element)); if (node.equals(title)) { _screen.add(new SeparatorField()); } } private class Connection extends Thread { public Connection() { super(); } public void run() { // define variables later used for parsing Document doc; StreamConnection conn; try { // providing the location of the XML file, // your address might be different conn = (StreamConnection) Connector .open("http://www.sufalamtech.com/demo/moviewebservice/Test.xml"); // next few lines creates variables to open a // stream, parse it, collect XML data and // extract the data which is required. // In this case they are elements, // node and the values of an element DocumentBuilderFactory docBuilderFactory = DocumentBuilderFactory .newInstance(); DocumentBuilder docBuilder = docBuilderFactory .newDocumentBuilder(); docBuilder.isValidating(); doc = docBuilder.parse(conn.openInputStream()); doc.getDocumentElement().normalize(); NodeList list = doc.getElementsByTagName("*"); _node = new String(); _element = new String(); // this "for" loop is used to parse through the // XML document and extract all elements and their // value, so they can be displayed on the device for (int i = 0; i < list.getLength(); i++) { Node value = list.item(i).getChildNodes().item(0); _node = list.item(i).getNodeName(); _element = value.getNodeValue(); updateField(_node, _element); }// end for }// end try // will catch any exception thrown by the XML parser catch (Exception e) { Dialog.alert("exception = " + e); } }// end connection function }// end connection class }// end XML_Parsing_Sample But when I am running this application, the simulator just showing me a Blank screen with label Requesting... Anybody help me out for this ? Thanks in advance...

• how can udp data can passed through RS232 in ansi c?

i want to transmit and receive data on RS232 using udp and i want to know about techniques which allow me to transmit and receive data on a faster rate and also no lose of data is there? thanx in advance. i have tried but need improvements if possible #include <stdio.h> #include <dos.h> #include<string.h> #include<conio.h> #include<iostream.h> #include<stdlib.h> #define PORT1 0x3f8 void main() { int c,ch,choice,i,a=0; char filename[30],filename2[30],buf; FILE *in,*out; clrscr(); while(1){ outportb(PORT1+0,0x03); outportb(PORT1+1,0); outportb(PORT1+3,0x03); outportb(PORT1+2,0xc7); outportb(PORT1+4,0x0b); cout<<"\n==============================================================="; cout<<"\n\t*****Serial Communication By BADR-U-ZAMAN******\nCommunication between two computers By serial port"; cout<<"\nPlease select\n[1]\tFor sending file \n[2]\tFor receiving file \n[3]\tTo exit\n"; cout<<"=================================================================\n"; cin>>choice; if(choice==1) { strcpy(filename,"C:\\TC\\BIN\\badr.cpp"); cout<<filename; for(i=0;i<=strlen(filename);i++) outportb(PORT1,filename[i]); in=fopen(filename,"r"); if (in==NULL) { cout<<"cannot open a file"; a=1; } if(a!=1) cout<<"\n\nFile sending.....\n\n"; while(!feof(in)) { buf=fgetc(in); cout<<buf; outportb(PORT1,buf); delay(5); } } else { if(choice==3) exit(0); i=0; buf='a'; while(buf!=NULL) { c=inportb(PORT1+5); if(c&1) { buf=inportb(PORT1); filename2[i]=buf; i++; } } out=fopen(filename2,"t"); cout<<"\n Filename received:"<<filename[2]; cout<<"\nReading from the port..."; cout<<"writing to file"<<filename2; do { c=inportb(PORT1+5); if(c&1) { buf=inportb(PORT1); cout<<buf; fputc(buf,out); delay(5); } if(kbhit()) { ch=getch(); } }while(ch!=27); } getch(); } }

• Dialog created after first becomes unresponsive unless created first?

- by Justin Sterling
After creating the initial dialog box that works perfectly fine, I create another dialog box when the Join Game button is pressed. The dialog box is created and show successfully, however I am unable to type in the edit box or even press or exit the dialog. Does anyone understand how to fix this or why it happens? I made sure the dialog box itself was not the problem by creating and displaying it from the main loop in the application. It worked fine when I created it that way. So why does it error when being created from another dialog? My code is below. This code is for the DLGPROC function that each dialog uses. #define WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN #include "Windows.h" #include ".\Controllers\Menu\MenuSystem.h" #include ".\Controllers\Game Controller\GameManager.h" #include ".\Controllers\Network\Network.h" #include "resource.h" #include "main.h" using namespace std; extern GameManager g; extern bool men; NET_Socket server; extern HWND d; HWND joinDlg; char ip[64]; void JoinMenu(){ joinDlg = CreateDialog(g_hInstance, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDD_GETADDRESSINFO), NULL, (DLGPROC)GameJoinDialogPrompt); SetFocus(joinDlg); // ShowWindow(joinDlg, SW_SHOW); ShowWindow(d, SW_HIDE); } LRESULT CALLBACK GameJoinDialogPrompt(HWND Dialogwindow, UINT Message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam){ switch(Message){ case WM_COMMAND:{ switch(LOWORD(wParam)){ case IDCONNECT:{ GetDlgItemText(joinDlg, IDC_IP, ip, 63); if(server.ConnectToServer(ip, 7890, NET_UDP) == NET_INVALID_SOCKET){ LogString("Failed to connect to server! IP: %s", ip); MessageBox(NULL, "Failed to connect!", "Error", MB_OK); ShowWindow(joinDlg, SW_SHOW); break; } } LogString("Connected!"); break; case IDCANCEL: ShowWindow(d, SW_SHOW); ShowWindow(joinDlg, SW_HIDE); break; } break; } case WM_CLOSE: PostQuitMessage(0); break; } return 0; } LRESULT CALLBACK GameMainDialogPrompt(HWND Dialogwindow, UINT Message, WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam){ switch(Message){ case WM_PAINT:{ PAINTSTRUCT ps; RECT rect; HDC hdc = GetDC(Dialogwindow); hdc = BeginPaint(Dialogwindow, &ps); GetClientRect (Dialogwindow, &rect); FillRect(hdc, &rect, CreateSolidBrush(RGB(0, 0, 0))); EndPaint(Dialogwindow, &ps); break; } case WM_COMMAND:{ switch(LOWORD(wParam)){ case IDC_HOST: if(!NET_Initialize()){ break; } if(server.CreateServer(7890, NET_UDP) != 0){ MessageBox(NULL, "Failed to create server.", "Error!", MB_OK); PostQuitMessage(0); return -1; } ShowWindow(d, SW_HIDE); break; case IDC_JOIN:{ JoinMenu(); } break; case IDC_EXIT: PostQuitMessage(0); break; default: break; } break; } return 0; } } I call the first dialog using the below code void EnterMenu(){ // joinDlg = CreateDialog(g_hInstance, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDD_GETADDRESSINFO), g_hWnd, (DLGPROC)GameJoinDialogPrompt);// d = CreateDialog(g_hInstance, MAKEINTRESOURCE(IDD_SELECTMENU), g_hWnd, (DLGPROC)GameMainDialogPrompt); } The dialog boxes are not DISABLED by default, and they are visible by default. Everything is set to be active on creation and no code deactivates the items on the dialog or the dialog itself.

• Winforms controls and "generic" events handlers. How can I do this?

- by Yanko Hernández Alvarez
In the demo of the ObjectListView control there is this code (in the "Complex Example" tab page) to allow for a custom editor (a ComboBox) (Adapted to my case and edited for clarity): EventHandler CurrentEH; private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) { ISomeInterface M = (e.RowObject as ObjectListView1Row).SomeObject; //(1) ComboBox cb = new ComboBox(); cb.Bounds = e.CellBounds; cb.DropDownStyle = ComboBoxStyle.DropDownList; cb.DataSource = ISomeOtherObjectCollection; cb.DisplayMember = "propertyName"; cb.DataBindings.Add("SelectedItem", M, "ISomeOtherObject", false, DataSourceUpdateMode.Never); e.Control = cb; cb.SelectedIndexChanged += CurrentEH = (object sender2, EventArgs e2) => M.ISomeOtherObject = (ISomeOtherObject)((ComboBox)sender2).SelectedValue; //(2) } } private void ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) { // Stop listening for change events ((ComboBox)e.Control).SelectedIndexChanged -= CurrentEH; // Any updating will have been down in the SelectedIndexChanged // event handler. // Here we simply make the list redraw the involved ListViewItem ((ObjectListView)sender).RefreshItem(e.ListViewItem); // We have updated the model object, so we cancel the auto update e.Cancel = true; } } I have too many other columns with combo editors inside objectlistviews to use a copy& paste strategy (besides, copy&paste is a serious source of bugs), so I tried to parameterize the code to keep the code duplication to a minimum. ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing is a piece of cake: HashSet<OLVColumn> cbColumns = new HashSet<OLVColumn> (new OLVColumn[] { SomeCol, SomeCol2, ...}; private void ObjectListView_CellEditFinishing(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (cbColumns.Contains(e.Column)) ... but ObjectListView_CellEditStarting is the problematic. I guess in CellEditStarting I will have to discriminate each case separately: private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) // code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc. else if (e.Column == SomeOtherCol) // code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc. And so on. But how can I parameterize the "code to create the combo, put the correct list as the datasource, etc."? Problem lines are (1) Get SomeObject. the property NAME varies. (2) Set ISomeOtherObject, the property name varies too. The types vary too, but I can cover those cases with a generic method combined with a not so "typesafe" API (for instance, the cb.DataBindings.Add and cb.DataSource both use an object) Reflection? more lambdas? Any ideas? Any other way to do the same? PS: I want to be able to do something like this: private void ObjectListView_CellEditStarting(object sender, CellEditEventArgs e) { if (e.Column == SomeCol) SetUpCombo<ISomeInterface>(ISomeOtherObjectCollection, "propertyName", SomeObject, ISomeOtherObject); else if (e.Column == SomeOtherCol) SetUpCombo<ISomeInterface2>(ISomeOtherObject2Collection, "propertyName2", SomeObject2 ISomeOtherObject2); and so on. Or something like that. I know, parameters SomeObject and ISomeOtherObject are not real parameters per see, but you get the idea of what I want. I want not to repeat the same code skeleton again and again and again. One solution would be "preprocessor generics" like C's DEFINE, but I don't thing c# has something like that. So, does anyone have some alternate ideas to solve this?
