• What's the performance on USB docking stations, and can they be used when laptop is closed?

  I'm looking into a docking station for a Dell Studio laptop. I don't see the traditional docking stations I'm familiar with - the kind (for a Dell Latitude, for example) where you sit the laptop on top of a long row of pins. Instead, I'm seeing a lot of USB docking stations. When I close my laptop, I want it to go into sleep mode. If I then connect a USB docking station to the laptop while it's closed, will it wake up? What's the performance on USB 2.0 docking stations with a new Dell Studio? Can all of the video and internet traffic really go through a USB 2.0 connection while still providing the best video frame rates and internet speeds? When you undock, I assume you'd have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows. Will that successfully 'remove' everything attached to the docking station - external drives, thumb drives, etc?

• Problem with IIS 6.0 in WOW WCF 4 (.net 4.0)

  We just upgraded to WCF 4 on IIS 6 (running in WoW 32 bit mode), and all of a sudden the services started running into what appears to be concurrency problems. Upon finding out we had a problem, we changed the Behavior Configuration Changes on the WCF server to the follow: <serviceThrottling maxConcurrentCalls="1000" maxConcurrentInstances="1000" maxConcurrentSessions="1000" /> We also changed the number of worker processes from 1 to 5. Doing all of this seemed to have no effect. The service seemed to be running, but throttled by something. Is there anything else that might need to be changed to remove the "artificial" throttling? Were using the default configuration WCF which should be Per-Call (not singleton).

• Sound quality in bluetooth headphones doesn't change to high

  My Bluetooth headset Philips SHB6610 has several profiles. It can work as low-quality headset (HFP) and high-quality headphones (A2DP). I mean sound quality. Typically whenever I start to play the music in my media player it works in high quality, while if I receive a call on Skype it switches to low-quality. Once call is finished it falls back on high quality again. However, from time to time, it happens that I connect headphones to the computer and they just stay in low-quality mode. I don't know how can I change the profile manually, since it was always done automatically so far. The only thing that helps (but not always) is re-pairing of headphones with PC. I am using Windows 7 on Toshiba Satellite Pro P300-1CG laptop, with Belkin Mini Bluetooth Adapter.

• Cannot change permissions in symlinked dropbox directory in Ubuntu 10.10

  Title pretty much says it all, but here's what I'm doing... ls -l produces this... drwx------ 1 brian brian 4096 2010-12-28 14:19 foldername -rw------- 1 brian brian 0 2010-12-28 15:54 index.html after typing something like chmod o=rx index.html the output of ls -l is the same. This happens whether or not I'm in the original location or the symlink location. However, as a further twist, the output of chmod -v o=rx index.html is the following: mode of `index.html' changed to 0605 (rw----r-x) The location is also being symlinked to by apache. What's going on with my permissions?

• Hyper-V server 2012 nic teaming setup and virtual switch configuration

  I have a server with 2 nics. I installed Hyper-v 2012 server (not windows server 2012, no gui) I am trying to set up load balancing. I have both nics in the same switch currently in trunk mode and no native vlan. I use the new-netlbfoteam command to create a team with both nics, I can then "set-netlbfoteamnic "Nic Team" -vlanid 4" so that its available to me with a DHCP or static address but as soon as I try to create a virtual switch it becomes unresponsive. My guess is that is due to it removing the vlan tagging I setup. if I add-netlbfoteamnic and set it for vlan 4, then set the IP I can ping it from my management computer but I just get an error "an error occurred while attempting to connect to server "xxxxxx" Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server."

• Best solution for Multi-WAN failover (inside & out)?

  Looking for a way to setup 2 ISPs in failover mode, for both incoming & outgoing traffic, for our small (<100 devices) network. The leading contender for now seems to be the Peplink Balance 310. However, a reseller I spoke with said it's great for 100% outgoing connectivity, but didn't seem to be confident in its abilities to handle incoming traffic. This is important as we host our own web site, Exchange e-mail, and virtual desktops (RDP). Do any Peplink owners use this for failover of incoming traffic? Are there other devices I should be considering? We're currently using a Cisco 1800 series router & ASA 5500 series firewall, with Comcast & T-1 lines (the goal being to replace the T with DSL/FiOS {whenever that becomes availble}). Price range: ~$1000 - $2500 USD. Thanks.

  I have a Juniper EX3300 switch in a data center. And I have connected one of the uplink ports (ge-0/1/0) to my ISP's router. I want to configure it so that all the devices connected to ports in the same VLAN as ge-0/1/0 can access the Internet. I have done some research, and I haven't gotten anywhere really. I have configured the interface as follows: ge-0/1/0 { ether-options { no-auto-negotiation; link-mode full-duplex; speed { 1g; } } unit 0 { family inet { address xx.xx.xx.xx/32; } } } where xx.xx.xx.xx is the "Customer Router Port IP" assigned by my ISP. When I try to commit, I get the following error: Interface ge-0/1/0.0 not enabled for switching Can some one tell me what is the right way to configure it?

  On a 32-bit Windows 2008 server running the Donor2 Application in the Classic .NET Managed Pipeline mode, configured for Windows Integrated Authentication and Impersonation, all of the .NET pages are passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName]. This is the correct, expected behavior. The Crystal Reports pages, instead of passing the authenticated user’s credentials, are passing the IIS Server’s credentials [DomainName\MachineName$]. One of the very frustrating aspects of this situation is that I have another server which, as far as I can tell, is configured identically. That server, when loading Crystal Reports, is passing the authenticated user’s credentials [DomainName\UserName] as expected. I have obviously missed something, but I have no idea what it could be.

• Virtual PC: Cannot restore machine from hibernate

  I have two virtual machines set up from Virtual PC on Windows 7 Professional: Windows XP Mode and Xubuntu. Last time I used them (last month or so), I had closed them by hibernating. Evidently, I have meanwhile downloaded a Windows Update affecting VPC and now receive the following error in restoring either of them from hibernation: 'Xubuntu' could not be restored because of either host processor type mismatch or lack of hardware-assisted virtualization support in the system. I've been through the virtual machine's settings, and there's nowhere an option to simply reboot it. (Virtualization is not the problem, as I can create a new virtual machine without any problems.) Any ideas?

  Hi, I am running FC9 under VMware Fusion 3.0 I wanted to resize my /dev/sda2 partition. In order to do that I did the following: 0. changed the size of the vmware file (under VMware settings). 1. rebooted the host to rescue mode without mounted disks 2. fdisk - removed & added /dev/sda2 - i had bigger /dev/sda2 3. lvm pvresize /dev/sda2 4. lvm pvdisplay - it showed me bigger size on /dev/VolGroup00 for /dev/sda2 5. lvm vgchange -a y - device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument - 2 logical volume(s) in volume group "VolGroup00" now active This is not true because there is no /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 My whole "/" disappeared. dmsetup table, shows: VolGroup00-LogVol01: 0 2097152 linear 8:2 38338944 VolGroup00-LogVol00: Can some one help me to solve this?   I recently installed Windows Server 2012. This will serve as the dev-instance for our engineers and will be accessed in multiple time zones. I therefore plan to run this 24x7 but want to conserve energy by going to sleep mode when not in use & enable Wake-On-Magic-Packet. Based on the previous post it appears that there is no option to sleep Win Server 2012 with Hyper-V. Since I don't care much about virtualization now, I uninstalled Hyper-V. In addition to this, I have done the following 1) Ran powercfg -a. Don't find sleep. 2) Added [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot] "Start"=dword:00000003 to try gaining sleep - no luck! 3) Only see Shutdown and Restart in power options. • Printer Management in AD Domain

  Hello, I normally push out all my printers via group policy preferences. However, the new copy machines I have are using some stranger drivers and I can not install x64/x86 drivers on the same machine for my clients to pull drivers from. So now I have two machines setup with the printer so they can pull drivers. Ontop of this there is specific driver configuration settings such as requiring the user to enter an access code to print set. Once the printer is installed via GPP, it puts everything to the default such as color mode, and other custom settings we like. I considered just using a Windows Print Server for this, but I do not know a way to push/delete these from clients like I can with GPP. Does anyone know how I can have a GPP copy the custom configuration I have set in the driver or have any recommendations?

• Fixing Windows 7 hibernation

  I've been mucking around with the partitions on my laptop (I'm an experienced Linux/grub guy) and have somehow ended up affecting the ability of Windows 7 to go into hibernate mode. All other functionality seems to be okay. But when I press Hibernate, it behaves as if it starts to (screen goes dark, a little disk activity) but never powers off and if I move the mouse the login screen instantly comes up. I don't know if Window uses a separate partition for hibernation? There is a 200MB partition on the drive - I seem to recall it was related to diagnostics or some other Windows- boot menu stuff. In any case, wondering if there's some commands I can run to restore the ability to hibernate and also which partitions need to be marked "active" and if there's anything I need to do to the MBR of the hard drive or the MBR of the Windows partition? As I said, Windows boots fine as long as it is designated the Active partition. I just need to fix Hibernation.

• Repeated Reporting Services Login issue when deploying through BIDS to a remote server

  We are having a problem deploying a reporting services report to a sql reporting services computer that is configured in SharePoint Integrated mode. I can successfully deploy to the SharePoint document libraries set up for reports and data connections if I do it locally from the box that SharePoint and Reporting Services are deployed on. If I try and do the same thing with the exact same deployment properties from a remote box, I constantly get a Reporting Services Login dialog popping up and no combination of domain\username and password will work. I've even tried the machines local admin account and still nothing. Any ideas where to start looking?

  Well i was using the info on this: Puppet - Any way to copy predefined custom configuration files for software on clients from the puppet master (host)? But i need some more elaborated, because i have several Desktops and are in use by 2 or 3 users each one, so i want to make a class for copy a shortcut in his desktops. The computers are joined to a domain, so any user can log in any desktop, and his profile is created in every desktop. I've tryed with this: class applink { file { "/home/installer/Escritorio/Workdesktop.desktop": owner => installer, group => root, mode => 770, source => "puppet://$server/files/Workdesktop.desktop" } This is only for one user called "installer", how can do this for several users? • Poor upload/download speed on 2 x ADSL lines into a Cisco 2621XM

  Hi, Sorry never been on this site before so I apologise if not the right section or even forum. I have users complaining of very slow internetn connectivity on site and have checked with our ISP who have said that the line is testing at 8mb. We have 2 x BT lines that have our ISP broadand on them. Both lines go into a Cisco 2600 series router that then has a PIX firewall off that. Connectivity is successful just gone really slow and unable to download anything. • how to program a special key on my laptop?

  ok so i have a set of touch screen buttons on the top of my laptop's keyboard, (one turns on power save mode, one disables/enables the mouse touch pad, one toggles the wifi adapter, and two turns the volume up/down) however theres another one that opened a file backup utility that came with my laptop. but since i bought my laptop , ive uninstalled that utility, rendering this button useless. So i was wondering if it was possible to reprogram that button to open another file or program on my computer? And if so what are the requirements and how would i go about doing it?   Hi I just installed outlook 2010, and saw this conversation feature. However my sent mails does not appear in the conversation. How do I make it appear there? PS: I'm not using exchange. Is there a way to do this without exchange? EDIT: There's something Weird happening. I'm testing this and it appears to work only sometimes. And When I Try this at the other company's computer that uses Exchange, but don't have exchange Cached mode enabled this doesn't work. And the option Show messages from other folders is not even there.

• Is there a Linux distro that will easily run "embedded style" on a Raspberry Pi?

  I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

• Toshiba Satellite laptop connected to HDTV

  I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6014 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit connected to a Toshiba Regza 42" HDTV with an HDMI cable. The laptop has a 16" display and the screen resolution is set to the maximum/recommended of 1366x768. The display output is set to "LCD+HDMI". The display looks fine on the laptop screen but on the TV it is not a "full screen" display, it leaves a good 3" black border all around all 4 edges. When I switch the display to "HDMI only", it is now too big for the TV screen and some of my desktop icons are no longer visible off to the side. What is the best way to set this up? I guess that since a 16" and 42" displays have different native resolutions, a LCD+HDMI mode is defaulting to the optimal size for the 16". But when I set it to HDMI Only, what is the appropriate resolution for a 42" full screen display? Thanks

• TP-Link TL-WA701N not working good as wireless extender

  I bought the device in subject to extend the range of my WPA2/PSK-protected wifi network powered by a TP-Link TL-WR340G device (AP+router). I configured it as follows: Operation mode: Universal Repeater MAC of AP: scanned my SSID and got it Channel width: 20MHz Security options: the same as the parent AP (WPA2/PSK with AES encryption) After configuration inSSIDer shows me two APs beaconing the same SSID at different SNRs (because I was with my laptop close to the extender). After a few hours my tablet, far from the parent AP, stopped working. I found that the scan reported two networks with the same SSID: one WPA-protected and one free at all. This happened very frequently. Rebooting the extender by unplugging it worked but this doesn't last long. Sometimes the extender stops transmitting at all, sometimes it beacons an open network to which nobody can connect (because there is no DHCP). What's wrong with my configuration?

• Dovecot throws obsolete warnings, even though dovecot.conf updated on Ubuntu 11

  In trying to set up SASL for dovecot on Ubuntu 11, I keep getting obsolete warnings in my log: Sep 10 15:33:53 server1 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:24: passdb {} has been replaced by passdb { driver= } Sep 10 15:33:53 server1 dovecot: config: Warning: Obsolete setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf:27: userdb {} has been replaced by userdb { driver= } Even though my dovecot.conf file looks like this: protocols = none auth default { mechanisms = plain login passdb { driver=pam } userdb { driver=passwd } socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } } Even when I try: driver=etc/pam.d/dovecot driver=etc/passwd I still get the same error. Looking at the example config file: cat /usr/share/doc/dovecot-common/dovecot/example-config/dovecot.conf was of no help. Dovecot is running: ps -A | grep 'dovecot' 9663 ? 00:00:00 dovecot But I can't seem to get that elusive "dovecot-auth" process. Anyone know what's going on?
