  In the last three month I was experiencing that my internet connection started to get very slow and websites had long time to load. The first thing I made was an ping to www.google.com which showed that I was loosing pakets. Here some of the results: 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2909 ttl=53 time=48.222 ms Request timeout for icmp_seq 2910 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2911 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2912 ttl=53 time=44.372 ms Days later I had to reset my router because it wasn't able to establish a correct network connection. It was after the reset when things worked again for some days. But later the same network timeouts started to happen again. I would like to know how I can analyze the problem to get to the source which is causing this timeouts. Which steps do you take to circle in this Problem? • Dual booting windows 8.1 and ubuntu

  I have a lenovo laptop with windows 8.1. I wanted to use ubuntu alongside windows. Hence, i downloaded the ubuntu 14.04 iso and created a live pendrive using Universal USB installer. I disabled secure boot and booted from the pendrive. All i get is the GNU GRUB command line version 2.X. I don't get a GUI for the GRUB and i don't know how to boot into ubuntu from the command line. I searched quite a few online forums but in vain. Can someone tell me how to proceed? Thanks in advance.

  I usually do my web dev on a production server, now i need to bring some work at home. I have installed XAMPP on my laptop and it seems to work perfectly fine. Most of my project involves CURL enabled, I need to make my xampp application to access the internet. Perhaps give it some IP address and Gateway. I've seen documentation how to enable CURL on xampp, yet I'm struggling to find how to make XAMPP to have internet access. I'm not asking how to access my XAMPP remotely, I'm simply asking how to give internet connection to xampp application for my CURL and other social network API to work.

• Good HDMI splitter/switch solution

  I have a full HD TV which has only 2 HDMI ports on it. Since I have more than 2 devices I connect to TV (e.g. laptop, game console, DVD player), it becomes uncomfortable to plug in and plug out HDMI cables every time I need to use the relevant device. I need a cheap solution to increase the number of my HDMI ports at least to 3. What type of splitter/switch do you recommend? Does the quality of splitter matter, or do they all produce the same audio & video quality?

• Why does my computer slow down after being on too long?

  I'm sure everyone has experienced it - if you leave a computer on too long, every once in a while, it needs a fresh reboot. I have a laptop, and I only hibernate it, but every week or two, I'm going to need to restart otherwise it will just slow down (usually when windows update makes me restart) I was wondering though... why? What are some of the things that occur that eat up memory that can seemingly not be freed unless I reboot the OS. In addition, are there any programs I can get that can free up this memory and keep the computer alive for longer? Preferably for windows 7.

• No communication on my VLAN?

  I am using a Netgear FSM7328S switch and have designated ports 19-24 as being part of VLAN # 3. I designated them all as untagged because I do not want them to switch traffic to any other port on the switch. I also removed them from the default, untagged, VLAN 1. My issue is that none of the ports 19-24 will communicate with eachother. My laptop plugged in with wireshark shows no switched traffic what so ever. Have I configured it wrong? Thanks, D

  I have virtualized laptops before, when someone gets a new one and doesn't want to quite let go of their old laptop for fear of losing something. This was using VMWare Workstation 7.X. In 8.0 when I go to "Convert a Physical Machine to a Virtual Machine", it asks for an IP address and doesn't give the option to virtualize the machine it's running on. How to I get VMWare to virtualize it's current system? I tried typing in Localhost, and 127.0.0.1 but that didn't do it.

• Taskbar disappears sometimes when using a second monitor

  Windows 7 laptop, docked with a second monitor. This problem started happening when I started using the second monitor. The taskbar will often stop displaying. The Windows logo remains, but the bar, system tray, clock, and any icons for minimized programs disappear. I can see part of my desktop wallpaper where the taskbar should be. The taskbar is not set to auto-hide. Killing the explorer.exe process and starting it again temporarily fixes this. Is there a permanent solution? Thanks!

• Second partition with Windows 7 unmountable

  I'm using GRUB2 to dualboot Ubuntu and Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 some days ago and rewrote GRUB2 to cope with the dualboot. Everything went fine till yesterday - I could boot into both OS. Since this morning my laptop restarts every time I choose Windows 7 from the menu. Ubuntu is still working. As I tried to mount the partition with Windows 7 on Ubuntu it gave me return code 2, so this isn't working as well. I tried to reinstall GRUB2 to the MBR but it didn't help. I also tried to repair Windows 7 boot with it's install DVD, while trying so it showed me the following error: "Status: 0xc000000f Info: Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." • How do I change the location of DivX cache files?

  I recently installed to the latest version of DivX and suddenly found my C drive filling up with the cache files. I tracked it down to: C:\Files\My Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files My old laptop (running WinXP) only has a small hard drive and any DivX cache files fills it up so I want it to use my D drive where I have a little more room. The trouble is I can't see anywhere in the DivX preferences where I can change the cache location. Can anyone tell me how I can change the location of the DivX cache files?

• Stuck on Checking battery state at startup in Ubuntu, have splash screen no startup

  I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. When I boot up the computer it goes to the splash but there is no login screen, just the purple background and the mouse cursor. "Checking battery state" is the last line that does not have an "[OK]". When I press Ctr-alt-shift-F1 I can login and sudo stop gdm and startx. However this makes it so that the applets don't show. Error: "The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_notificationAreaApplet" and does it for every single applet. Everything else works fine though. I get a EHCI: BIOS handoff failed twice in the dmesg as well. The laptop has intel mobile integrated graphics. UPDATE: Now my desktop has the exact same problem. Things that I have tried: Changing to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.modeset=1 acpi=off"

• How to keep the function key locked on Lenovo E431?

  For the Lenovo e431, how do you keep the function key locked. Right now, the default is when you press F1-F12, he multimedia controls are active. To get to the standard F1-F12, you have to hold down Fn+the function key. This used to available in bios, but for this laptop model, it no longer is available. You can press Fn+esc, and it locks it for that session, but when the computer reboots, this is reset back to the default. Is there a way so that the default is not the multimedia function keys, but just the standard, legacy function keys? Thanks.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Merging partitions and removing windows of one partition

  I have two partitions on my laptop, I created a new one when installing windows 8 pro because windows 7 wouldn't upgrade to it for some odd reason. The main partition, which has 631 GB ( has windows 7 installed on it, and the second partition is 49.9 GB and has windows 8 installed on it. What I need to do is remove windows 7 from the other one (Yeah its dual booting), make it so it boots straight into windows 8, without showing the dual boot screen, and also merge the two drives together. Only problem is, I have no idea how to do this. Please don't use complete lamens terms, I am a software developer so I know at least a bit about computers. • Windows XP does not list WPA wireless networks

  What can be the reason that Windows XP does not show WPA-encrypted wireless networks? The laptop I have problems with is an older model (Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100) with Windows XP SP3 on it, fresh install. The wireless network card in it is an Agere product that lists as "Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card". The networks showed up perfectly before I first tried to connect to one (it was set to WPA2). The connection failed (the card supports WPA only), then something must have happend and Windows hides these networks now. A manually configured WPA setup via Windows' own wizard works, I'm using it right now. The network just won't show up in the list of available network on its own. I suspect that XP incorrectly set a flag somewhere that this network card does not support WPA. Is there such a flag, and if so, how can I change it back?

  I have a VAIO Z-series (VGN-Z890T) and I want to install openSUSE 11.2. I found some guides to fix the problem for the video card switch, but all for older models, those preconfigured with windows vista. It looks like newer model use a different bios configuration to support hot swap between cards in Windows 7 and this change breaks the solution to my problem. I'm not an experienced linux user, but i was using it recently on my old computer ind definitively I want it on my laptop. I installed openSUSE once and i was trying and trying to solve it until I finished reinstall again and use a fresh installation. My question is: Does anyone has installed and configured successfully openSUSE on one of the latest vaio z laptops???

• Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

  I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

  I am planning to buy TP-LINK ADSL wifi router (model TD-W8151N) for my Internet connection which provides Internet through ADSL telephone line. I am also planning to take cable internet in a few months which provides internet through a LAN cable without the need of any modem. So I would like to have my modem work for both connections which I am using. When using cable internet I want this TP-Link modem to work just as a wireless router (so that I can have the freedom to use my laptop in different rooms instead of sitting at a place by plugging in that cable). Is it possible to use this modem in that way? I don't have much knowledge about these things except that I can configure things as instructed.   In my company we have 8 laptops that we use to deploy on the field. These machines get assigned to a user for a certain time and run Windows Vista. All the machines are the same model. After the machine is returned, it is company policy to completely format the machine and go back to a predetermined configuration. Right now, what we do is we use the recovery utility in the laptop (we are a small shop so we use the OEM Windows license that the laptops come with) and manually uninstall and change the configuration in order to bring it to our baseline config. I know that there are ways to create an image that gets copied to the hard drive with a specific configuration and with specific software installed (thats what OEMs do right?). I'm looking for a tool or a tutorial or something that explains as simply as possible how to create such an image. Thanks a lot

• Windows XP won't boot after drive transplant

  Hi all, I moved my hard drive from my Lenovo laptop into my Asus Eee PC netbook. When I started the netbook, after POST all I got was a black screen with a cursor in the upper left corner. I thought that the migration should work OK because this was a 32-bit version of Windows XP, and the Atom processor in the Asus should support the x86 instruction set. However, I don't know much about Windows, so maybe this was a dumb thought. I did verify that the BIOS can find the drive. It required major surgery to replace the drive, so any solution requiring me to remove the transplant drive is not going to fly. Keeping in mind that the netbook has no optical drive and that I have no other Windows computers (all my other computers run Linux), is there any way I can fix this problem? Thanks! Nathan

• Installing Windows XP sp3 into USB 2.0 WD 320Gb Hard Drive

  I have a HP laptop with support for 3 USB 2.0 ports. I also have a clean 320Gb WD USB 2.0 drive. The HP can boot from USB (Bios options). I used the install disk (XP SP3 bootable) and after a few stutters, was actually able to load up a partition on the 320Gb drive with Windows. I cannot consistently get the system to boot up off the USB drive. I am able to drop Ubuntu on that same WD drive and boot up. I can even get Grub2 on Ubuntu to recognize the Win OS. But booting the Win OS is an impossible task. What can I do differently - if anything?

• Setting up Samba shares on a Linux VPS

  Hi, I'm trying to set up a folder that can be accessed via Windows clients over the net on my Linux VPS on which our companies website resides. I know a little bit about Linux, and have used Samba before to browse Windows shares from a Linux laptop. I'm guessing it's possible to do the reverse - to share a folder from Linux TO a Windows client. I have root SSH access to the VPS, would anyknow know what steps I need to take to set up the share, and how I can secure it, ideally with a simple username/password so the Windows clients can connect easily?
