• Western Digital Smartware not detect External HDD

  Hi people, i recently buy WD Mybook Essential HDD 1 TB. I downloaded and install Smartware software in both my desktop (windows xp) and laptop (Windows 7) but in both case the s/w is not able to detect the external hard disc. It shows desktop/laptop (Whichever is apt) on left hand side of software but not the hard drive on right side. Why so? i need to install smartware s/w as my friend had gave me which i suppose had deleted the software. please help me thanks

• Problem displaying tiles using tiled map loader with SFML

  I've been searching fruitlessly for what I did wrong for the past couple of days and I was wondering if anyone here could help me. My program loads my tile map, but then crashes with an assertion error. • How to edit semi-plaintext file and maintaining character structure?

  I am using a software (Groupmail from Infacta) that uses exact / absolute %PATHS% for saving some settings in specific semi-plaintext file. This is a really bad idea because you can't move to USER folder, or like my case it does not work after migrating to a new computer with different language. For example: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Infacta is different than C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Configuración local\Datos de programa\Infacta Obviously, the software does not work well. I tried to solve this using Find/Replace the new PATH with Notepad++. While the Groupmail software loads well and shows settings correctly, the software fails when trying to save data on that file. I guess this is because length or number of replaced characters is different and also it corrupt the file. Please could you help me to edit this file maintaining file integrity / structure?

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • BPM 11g - Dynamic Task Assignment with Multi-level Organization Units

  I've seen several requirements to have a more granular level of task assignment in BPM 11g based on some value in the data passed to the process. Parametric Roles is normally the first port of call to try to satisfy this requirement, but in this blog we will show how a lot of use-cases can be satisfied by the easier to implement and flexible Organization Unit. The Use-Case Task assignment is to an approval group containing several users. At runtime, a location value in the input data determines which of the particular users the task is ultimately assigned to. In this case we use the Demo Community referenced in the SOA Admin Guide, and specifically the "LoanAnalyticGroup" which contains three users; "szweig", "mmitch" & "fkafka". In our scenario we would like to assign a task to "szweig" if the input data specifies that the location is "JapanCentral", to "fkafka" if the location is "JapanNorth" and to "mmitch" if "JapanSouth", and to all of them if the location is "Japan" i.e....   The Process Simple one human task process.... In the output data association of the "Start" activity we need to set the value of the "Organization Unit" predefined variable based on the input data (note that the  predefined variables can only be set on output data associations)....  ...and in the output data association of the human activity we will reset the "Organization Unit" to empty, always good practice to ensure that the Organization Unit will not be used for any subsequent human activities for which we do not require it.... Set Up the Organization Unit  Log in to the BPM Workspace with an administrator user (weblogic/welcome1 in our case) and choose the "Administration" option. Within "Roles" assign the "ProcessOwner" swim-lane for our process to "LoanAnalyticGroup".... Within "Organization Units" we can model our organization.... "Root Organization Unit" as "Japan" and "Child Organization Unit" as "Central", "South" & "North" as shown. As described previously, add user "szweig" to "Central", "mmitch" to "South" and "fkafka" to "North"....   Test the Process Invalid Data  First let us test with invalid data in the input to see what the consequences are, here we use "X" as input.... ...and looking at the instance we can see it has errored.... Organization Unit Root Level Assignment  Now let us see what happens if we have "Japan" in the input data.... ...looking in the "flow trace" we can see that the task has been assigned....  ... but who has the task been assigned to ? Let us look in the BPM Workspace for user "szweig"....  ...and for "mmitch"....  ... and for "fkafka"....  ...so we can see that with an Organization Unit at "Root" level we have successfully assigned the task to all users. Organization Unit Child Level Assignment  Now let us test with "Japan/North" in the input data.... ...and looking in "fkafka" workspace we see the task has been assigned, remember, he was associated with "JapanNorth"....   ... but what about the workspace of "szweig"....  ...no tasks assigned, neither has "mmitch", just as we expected. Summary  We have seen in this blog how to easily implement multi-level dynamic task routing using Organization Units, a common use-case and a simpler solution than Parametric Roles.

• How to Configure a vm on the same machine to do remote desktop [closed]

  I want to achieve following: (Note I'd like to get this done first of all with Win7 as both host and vm OS) Install Windows 7/xp/Windows 8 VM on Windows 7/Windows 8 host machine Configure it so that I can connect to it via remote desktop. This is because I use a screen reader software and audio output directly from VMs is not highly responsive. My software has a feature that it can connect to its copy on the remote machine (during rdp session) and then start receiving the text description which it translates into audio on the client (host in this case) machine. I want to know: Which VM software can let me do this – VMWare/Ms Virtual PC or VirtualBox If it is possible with every VM software, could you give an example of how to do this with anyone of these 3? Specifically, I know how to install Windows on VM (on both VMWare/Virtual PC), but don't really know how to configure a network such that I can remote into that VM from host OS. Hope it clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.

• Transmission torrent client very inconsistent speeds

  I have inconsistent download speed using the transmission bit torrent client. The speed will vary greatly between 400kb and 1kb per second (My internet is crap 400kb is a acceptable maximum). I also noticed that even though hundreds of peers are available Transmission will only connect to about 20 at any time (I have set the connection limit to 200 per torrent and 500 max). I hope someone know a fix.

• Slow internet browsing in Ubuntu

  I have a dual boot set up with windows and ubuntu, when I'm using windows internet browsing is a lot faster than when I'm using ubuntu and I don't know why. It's like there's just a big latency rather than the maximum speed is lower, there's a big delay before anything happens when using Ubuntu, it happens with all websites all the time. I've never configured the internet connection because it just worked straight away. I have broadband connection through a router shared with some other computers, when we set up the router and internet connection everything was done with windows. Any ideas on what I could do to fix this? Thanks to anyone who replies.

• Move site to new domain divided by language across subdomains

  I managed to find a nice domain for a fairly fledgling site of mine that actually hasn't been parked by scumbag squatters. Given the upcoming move I'm thinking I'd take the opportunity to split the content across subdomains according to language, much like wikipedia for example: current: www.old-domain.com/en/subject # English www.old-domain.com/subjecto # Spanish (default so not locale in url) proposed en.new-domain.com/subject es.new-domain.com/subjecto The advantage of doing this is a fairly competitive keyword such that I may wish to put a copy of my application on a Spanish slice in order to gain a few serp's. Also pure vanity. Google's webmaster tools allows me to move to the new domain and I can add the root domain and the subdomains but forward to only one. I'll 301 from the old domain appropriately but is there anything I should know about webmaster tools in this respect where effectively I'm moving to two addresses? (Feel free to dissuade me from doing this if it's a bad idea in comments.)

• How does btrfs RAID work in degraded mode?

  My idea was that (using loopback devices) it works like this Create the raid array sudo mkfs.btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 You mount them sudo mount /dev/loop1 /mnt and mark them touch goodcondition You unmount and simulate disk failure (remove disk or delete loopback device loop2 in my case) You mount degraded -o degraded and mark again touch degraded You add the bad disk again sudo btrfs dev add /dev/loop2 You rebalance sudo btrfs fi ba /mnt And Raid 1 should work again. But that's not the case. sudo btrfs fi show: Total devices 3 FS bytes used 28.00KB devid 3 size 4.00GB used 264.00MB path /dev/loop1 devid 2 size 4.00GB used 272.00MB path /dev/loop2 *** Some devices missing The file degraded lives on loop1 but not on loop2 when loop2 is mounted in degraded mode. Why is that?

• GPL'ing code of a third party?

  I am facing the following dilemma at the moment. I am using code from a scientific paper in a commercial project. So basically I copied and pasted the code from the paper's pdf into my code editor and use it in my own code. The code in the paper does not have any copy restrictions or license(like the GPL) so I thought I would be ok using it in a commercial project. However, I have seen several gpl licensed open source projects that use the exact same code from the paper to the point of having the same variable names like in the paper. So what happened here is that a gpl license was put on a third parties non gpl'ed code. Are these open source projects in violation of the gpl or would I be in violation of the gpl because I use code which has been gpl'ed? My common sense tells me it is not allowed to gpl somebody elses non-gpl'ed (like in this case from the paper) code but I though I would ask anyway.

• Package managers for Windows

  You might be familiar with Ninite. What I'd like to know is if there are good alternatives to that software for Windows. The features I expect: installs the latest version of software supports 64 bit installs where possible strips ads/toolbars/similar stuff provides a way to keep the programs updated after installation if I can add custom installers to the software, that's a big plus. Any ideas if such a program exists?

• What's going on with my wireless?

  The WiFi on my Acer laptop (it's a 3810TZ, with Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1000) works flawlessly on Ubuntu 11.04. On 11.10, it's continually up and down, and it fills the system log with messages such as those below. What is going on? It seems to be unable to decide which regulatory domain it's in. Despite the system configuration being quite clearly set to UK it persists in configuring itself as though it was opeating in Taiwan! • Lessons From OpenId, Cardspace and Facebook Connect

  (c) denise carbonell I think Johannes Ernst summarized pretty well what happened in a broad sense in regards to OpenId, Cardspace and Facebook Connect. However, I'm more interested in the lessons we can take away from this. First  - "Apple Lesson" - If user-centric identity is going to happen it's going to require not only technology but also a strong marketing campaign. I'm calling this the "Apple Lesson" because it's very similar to how Apple iPad saw success vs the tablet market. The iPad is not only a very good technology product but it was backed by a very good marketing plan. I know most people do not want to think about marketing here - but the fact is that nobody could really articulate why user-centric identity mattered in a way that the average person cared about. Second - "Facebook Lesson" - Facebook Connect solves a number of interesting problems that is easy for both consumer and service providers. For a consumer it's simple to log-in without any redirects. And while Facebook isn't perfect on privacy - no other major consumer-focused service on the Internet provides as much control about sharing identity information. From a developer perspective it is very easy to implement the SSO and fetch other identity information (if the user has given permission). This could only happen because a major company just decided to make a singular focus to make it happen. Third - "Developers Lesson" -  Facebook Social Graph API is by far the simplest API for accessing identity information which also is another reason why you're seeing such rapid growth in Facebook enabled Websites. By using a combination of URL and Javascript - the power a single HTML page now gives a developer writing Web applications is simply amazing. For example It doesn't get much simpler than this "http://api.facebook.com/mewilcox" for accessing identity. • How will my Electronic Engineering degree be received in the Canadian Game Development market? [closed]

  I have a Electronic Engineering with Computer Science Degree from a reputable South African university. The EE with CS degree is basically Electronic Engineering, with some of the high voltage subjects thrown out and replaced with computer science subjects - mostly quite theoretical, but not in too much depth. I went on to earn a Masters Degree in Digital Signal Processing, focussing on Speech Recognition in Educational Applications. I have always loved programming - I taught myself QBASIC when I was in primary school, I learned Java at school, did some low level C at University, and taught myself C# and Python while doing my post graduate degree. C# is currently my strong suit, I think I am pretty capable with it. I have two years work experience in Namibia - working as a consulting electrical engineer (no software content whatsoever) and also developing C# desktop applications for the company I work for. I would like to move to Canada next year and work in the Game Development Industry as programmer or software engineer. My interests in particular are towards the more mathematical applications, like game and physics engines, or statistical disciplines like artificial intelligence. However, these are passions - not areas in which I have any work experience. So the question: How well will my BEngEE&CS and MScEng be received in the game industry? Seeing as it's not a pure software degree and I have no official software development work experience?

• Limited resource practice problems?

  I'm applying for some big companies and the areas I seem to be getting burned on is problems involving limited memory, disk-space or throughput. These large companies process GBs of data every second (or more), and they need efficient ways of managing all that data. I have no experience with this as none of the projects I have worked on have grown that large. Is there a good place to learn about or practice these sorts of problems? Most of the practice-problem sites I've encountered only have problems where you have to solve something efficiently (usually involving prime numbers) but none of them limit your resources.

  I have an ftp client (.NET app I don't have the source to) that only does active mode that needs to push data to an appliances ftp-server that only speaks passive. There is nothing I can do to modify the software on either end; but everything in between is fair game. (routing, windows or linux software, firewall tricks, ...) Is there some kind of ftp proxy software? Or some kind of solution I could try?

• Have you used nDepend?

  Have you Used NDepend? I have often wanted to use it, but never spent the money on it.   I have developed many tools that try to do pieces of what NDepend does, but never with as much success as they reach. Put simply, it is a tool that will allow you to udnerstand and monitor the architecture of your software, and it does it in some pretty amazing ways. One of the most impressive features is something that they call Code Query Language.   It allows you to write queries very similar to SQL to track the performance of various software metrics and use this to identify areas that are out of compliance with your standards and architecture. For instance, once you have analyzed your project, you can write queries such as : SELECT METHODS WHERE IsPublic AND CouldBePrivate  You can also set up such queries to provide warnings if there are records returned.    You can incorporae this into your daily build and compare build against build. There are over 82 metrics included to allow you to view your code in a variety of angles. I have often advocated for a "Code Inventory" database to track the state of software and the ROI on software investments.    This tool alone will take you about 90% of the way there. If you are not using it yet,  I strongly recommend that you do!

I've never forked a project before, but this project is very similar to something that I need/want. However, I'm not sure how far I'll get, so my plan is to pull the latest from their repository and start working. Maybe, eventually, I'll get it to where I want it, and be able to release it. Is this the right approach? How, exactly, does this impact forking of the project? How do I track who owns what components or sections (what's copyright me, what's copyright the original creators, once I start stomping over their code base)? Can I fork this project? What must I do prior to releasing, and when/if I decide to release the software derived from this BSD-licensed work?
