• how to install Ubuntu on a fresh hard drive

  I attempted to install Ubuntu from a USB stick to my Intel 4 3GHz computer with 80GB HDD. The installer was doing well, then it said something to the effect of "errors on the source USB, or the target HDD" The recommendation was to download the installer again. I suspected my HDD was going bad so I figured I would investigate. What I found was a partially formatted 80GB HDD. I repartitioned it via a different computer. Now a fresh copy of the Ubuntu USB installer is not able to move past the start-up screen (it freezes). I was able to purchase a new / clean HDD, but still the fresh copy of the installer still locks up after the initial opening screen (locks up after about 2 screens worth of installations steps). Does this sounds like a HDD NTHS issue or a CPU/hardware/memory issue? or should I move to a CD image file rather than my USB stick? Now my computer is stuck... no OS.. no way to go back to Windows (upgrade OS CD only). Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Stuck in Schenectady Herman Wiegman

• Can you help diagnose why this laptop running ubantu has crashed and seemingly died

  Love any suggestions you have to this problem. My laptop had Window Vista on previously (sorry). Something went wrong, I can't remember, and I tried to reinstall but couldn't, installed a replacement second hand HD, and installed Ubantu instead. It worked ok for a little while, before crashing. I ended up reloading Ubantu three times. It works for a while after (say 3-5 hrs of domestic web browsing), and then crashes. When I turn it on now, it comes up with some options to restart in safe mode, run tests and so on. I can't get it to start normally. I'm not going to re-install again. Below are screen shots of what happens when I follow some of these test options. These screen shots mean nothing to me. Any ideas?   Let's say I have a command called foo which prints a number to the screen when called: $foo 3 Let's also say I have another command called bar which prints another number to the screen when called: $bar 5 I'm looking to write a shell script which will add together the output of foo and bar. How would I do that? (The outputs from the commands are not known ahead of time. They just so happen to have been 3 and 5 the last time they were run. They could have been something else.) Thanks!

• Can I find the session ID for a user logged on to another machine?

  I want to open an application on another computer on the same network via the command line. The scenario here is that the user is in a room surrounded by about 20 computers and wants to be able to launch the same app on every computer without walking from screen to screen opening it up on each individual machine. I've discovered that I can get the basic functionality for this using PsExec as follows: psexec \\[computer] -u [username] -p [password] -d -i [SessionID] [program] For computer, username, password, and program, I'm good. Does anyone know of a way I can figure out which SessionID is assigned to a particular user logged on to a particular machine on the network? Alternately, is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish?

• Windows 8 Metro UI with Multiple Monitors -- Keep in always maximized?

  Before installing Win 8 today, my plan was to keep the Metro UI up on my smaller, laptop monitor and have the classic UI running on my two larger monitors. However, in reality, as soon as I click on something in one of the classic UI monitors, the Metro UI minimizes (thus exposing the classic UI in its place). Is there any way to keep the Metro UI from minimizing when I do something in another monitor? Oddly enough, if there is an app running/suspended in the Metro Window, then the Metro UI is not minimized. If the Start screen is currently viewed, clicking in a classic window/monitor switches the Metro UI from the start screen to the last run app. Very peculiar .. Thanks

• My computer will not reboot after fresh install of ubuntu 12.04LTS

  I bought a new computer yesterday and it came with Windows 8. When installing Ubuntu, i choose the erase and install option thinking that Ubuntu would install easily like it did for my old laptop... After a successful install and following the instructions telling me to reboot to finish installation and remove installation media. It worked and my computer booted fine, however once I began installing updates via update manager and activating additional driver {ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates)} out of the following: Experimental AMD binary Xorg driver and kernel module ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (*experimental*beta) ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates) Then reboot to finish making changes I reboot and get an error (Reboot and select proper boot device) At this point I was stuck, so I eventually reinstalled ubuntu and repeated the exacted same steps until right before i rebooted to finish making changes. However this time i used this Boot Repair tool sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair boot-repair After running the program i get a "boot successfully repaired" message. Then I try to reboot again and get the GNU Grub screen where it says would you like to boot: normal recovery memorytest Once it begins loading, you see the code moving across the screen then it pauses when it gets to and doesnt do anything. If someone could tell me how to fix this or get Windows 8 back soon, I'd appreciate it because like i said i just bought it yesterday and now i cant even use it.

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer.   I am fresh for Ubuntu and Linux in general. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and stuck trying to setup correct resolution for my LCD display. • Transfer Win8 user settings between profiles [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I sync grouped Windows Store apps between devices? Is there a way for me to copy/save/transfer my "start menu" configuration, meaning the grouping and ordering of the elements on the Start screen, between user profiles? Is it in the registry? I am open to manual or "coded" suggestions. UPDATE: I'd like to VETO this closing. I am aware of the "roaming" profile behavior. I want to COPY my configuration BETWEEN profiles on the same machine.... DIFFERENT profile DIFFERENT person. I like the way my start screen is set up. i want to set my wife up with the same layout.

• Connecting / disconnecting DisplayPort causes crash

  I wanted to file a bug about this using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel, but the system prompted my to try posting here first. So here goes :-) While the situation in Ubuntu 11.10 was still somewhat workable (see UI freezes when disconnecting DisplayPort), in 12.04 (using Unity 3D) it has gotten worse. The weird part is that during the 12.04 beta's, the situation was actually improving! I was able to successfully connect and disconnect a DisplayPort monitor without the system breaking down on me. But now with 12.04 final (with all updates), it's just plain terrible. When I now connect an external monitor using the DisplayPort connector on my HP ProBook 6550b, it only works sometimes. Most times (but not always!) the screen just goes blank and the system seems to crash (not even CTRL+ALT+F1 works anymore). Only a hard shutdown by keeping the power button pressed for several seconds and then a restart gets me out of this. I suspect the chances of the system crashing become higher as the system's uptime increases, especially when there have been one or more suspend-resume cycles (although I have also experienced this bug once from a cold boot). Disconnecting is roughly the same as with 11.10 (see issue mentioned above), with the difference that if I resume from suspend, I no longer have to do a CTRL+ALT+F1, ALT+F7 cycle to get my screen back. So what more can I try? Or should I just go ahead and file the bug anyway?

• Port Forwarding for Remote Desktop

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• XNA 2D Spritesheet drawing rendering problem

  I'm making a tile-based game, using one spritesheet containing all tile graphics. Each tile has a size of 32x32 pixels. The main problem is: when I draw the tile to the screen, if the tile position x and y are not rounded or if scale is activated in spriteBatch.Draw() method (scale != 1.0f), I get some lines of adjacent tiles on the spritesheet into the current tile drawed. I already tried setting SamplerState to PointClamp, removing AntiAlias, but still doesn't work. Here I'll show images of some tests that I made, with a test sprite sheet that I've created (I made a 9x9 spritesheet, with each sprite of size 32x32 containing a unique solid color). What I want is to get the correct area of the tilesheet texture (as seen in the first test, that gets just the yellow pixels). My question is: Is there any way that I can fix this, WITHOUT adding tile spacing or any other modification involving the tilesheet? Maybe disabling a texture filtering that is done by XNA, or something like that.

• How should I structure moving from overworld to menu system / combat?

  I'm making a text-based "Arena" game where the player is the owner of 5 creatures that battle other teams for loot, experience and glory. The game is very simple, using Python and a curses emulator. I have a static ASCII map of an "overworld" of sorts. My character, represented by a glyph, can move about this static map. There are locations all over the map that the character can visit, that break down into two types: 1) Towns, which are a series of menus that will allow the player to buy equipment for his team, hire new recruits or do other things. 2) Arenas, where the player's team will have a "battle" interface with actions he can perform, messages about the fight, etc. Maybe later, an ASCII representation of the fight but for now, just screens of information with action prompts. My main problem is what kind of design or structure I should use to implement this? Right now, the game goes through a master loop which waits for keyboard input and then moves the player about the screen. My current thinking is this: 1) Upon keyboard input, the Player coordinates are checked against a list of Location objects and if the Player coords match the Location coords then... 2) ??? I'm not sure if I should then call a seperate function to initiate a "menu" or "combat" mode. Or should I create some kind of new GameMode object that contains a method itself for drawing the screen, printing the necessary info? How do I pass my player's team data into this object? My main concern is passing around the program flow into all these objects. Should I be calling straight functions for different parts of my game, and objects to represent "things" within my game? I was reading about the MVC pattern and how this kind of problem might benefit - decouple the GUI from the game logic and user input but I have no idea how this applies to my game.

• X200 Tablet notebook won't start after BIOS Update

  I have LENOVO X200 Tablet and I ran the BIOS Update and the computer won't start after the BIOS update. When I ran the BIOS update utility it ran everything fine and asked to restart the computer but it wont start screen is blank. I unplugged the power and took of the battery and put them back and still not starting. Now it has [Power On] indicator light on and screen is not starting. I tried pressing F1 button while trying to start the computer but it doesn't do react to anything. Please help how I can start my Tablet. • The battery indicator in Unity panel not showing up

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 with Wubi. Well after being completely dazzled with the amount of free content in the Software Centre, I decided to go deeper and start messing with settings. Well after changing the screen brightness the highest level I noticed that there wasn't an indicator for how much battery was left in my laptop. I looked up online on got 2 suggestions on how to fix: Right click on the Unity panel and add an indicator Set it to show in the power settings menu. Well I did both when I right click at the top menu nothing comes up and setting it to show does nothing either. Then I tried installing something in the Software Centre. I got something but when I activated it it said I had 0% power left even though I was charging and at %100 according the Light in the front of my laptop. So now I'm thinking that it doesn't even recognise my computer as a laptop which is weird because in the display settings it says my screen size is set to laptop. How can I install it? I don't know what version it is other then Ubuntu 12.04 and no matter what the icon does not appear with the

• Invoke host's workspace switcher from inside VM

  When I start a virtual machine (like VMware or VirtualBox) and set it full screen then, from the host OS (in this case Ubuntu), I can beautifully switch to it with the Workspace Switcher. So I switch to the VM like I switch to a virtual screen. But switching back -- from the VM to the host's virtual screens -- seems to be impossible because by entering the VM I loose the host's workspace switcher. Is there a nifty workspace switcher program that runs inside the VM and is able to switch workspaces of the host machine? Edit in light of Frank Thomas' answer, can we configure VirtualBox (or VMware) to not send certain key combinations to the VM, but keep them to the host? Like Super+S. In that approach I would sadly have to miss the nice workspace switcher icon in the guest OS, but that's OK if at least the keyboard trick would work.

• Can't start a service (sudo) remotely from script and keep it running

  I have a service (tomcat) that needs sudo to be started. I made a simple script on the remote server in /root/bin/test.sh #!/bin/sh sudo service tomcat start read (The script needs to do other stuff too, just pared down for simplicity). When I run a it directly on the remote server, tomcat starts and continues running on the server after I disconnect. When I run it remotely, the process starts, (I can see it when paused for the "read"), but once the script ends, it's gone. (while paused for the read, run this command locally) ps -ef | grep tomcat I've tried various combinations of nohup, screen, and & on the commands both on the local machine and in the remote machine's test.sh script, but I can't seem to get it working. ssh -t [email protected] "/root/bin/test.sh" ssh -t [email protected] "nohup /root/bin/test.sh" ssh -t [email protected] "nohup /root/bin/test.sh &" ssh -t [email protected] "screen /root/bin/test.sh &"

• Double entries in the gnome 3 task bar

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3. All was working well except that graphics were slow and even moving a window on the screen seemed slow. I installed the fglrx ati driver. Which seems to have improved matters. But on first login I had all gnome items duplicated. That is my task bar has the ubuntu sign, then says Applications, then places then the ubuntu sign then Aplications and then places. Any application I run produces two icons at the bottom of the screen. This was after a reboot. I rebooted again. Now I have 3!! On the right each set of icons such as printer is also trippled!! • Display Problems running Ubuntu 12.04 in Windows VMware Player

  I am posting this again because I have changed to VMWare Player and I discovered something new. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Guest) in VMWare Player 6.0.2 on Windows 7 64-bit Host. I have VMWare Tools installed properly. I am running MATE but the problem persists when I change (to and from) xfce, gnome, mate a-- and back again I had been using this for a couple of years without any graphics issues. After an Ubuntu update (typical) -- my video is corrupt and will not refresh correctly. My desktop icons are "mirrored" and when I open a terminal window (for instance) -- sometimes -- the window appears multiple times. Of course, only one is the real image. It seems to be a refresh problem. When I move an active window around the screen the "older" images "erase" and my icons (for instance) are in the correct location. For instance, I can move the terminal around a pretty corrupted window and the screen behind it is repainted correctly. NEW: Next, I got the idea to try and Remote Desktop in to the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Guest OS from my Windows 7 64-bit Host. Once working, and connected via Win RDC -- using MATE as default in my /etc/xrdp/startws.sh -- my video is not corrupted and works fine (as in the past). Any ideas about what is going on ? or how to fix this ?

• Is there a way to make catalyst driver work in Trusty for the radeon hd4330?

  Though official Catalyst software 13.1 is suitable for ati radeon hd4330, it can't be installed on Ubuntu 14.04 as it can't support Xorg = 7.6 As I need proprietary drivers for trusty, I would like to know if there is a way to bypass this limitation ? • How to diagnose a Windows XP hard crash

  I have a 64-bit Windows XP machine which has hard crashed several times today. The symptoms are that the screen just goes blank, then the reboot cycle starts. There is no blue screen and even though it is switched on, no crash dump file is created. On all occasions it has happened during a period of high CPU/memory activity. I have run a full Dell diagnostics with no failures. Any ideas how to track this down further? Thanks.

• Hard time installing Ubuntu

  I have a MSI GT780DXR that currently is booting windows 7. I've been trying to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu for some time now. Here's specs that I think would make a difference Windows 7 500GB*2 RAID 0 hard drives. (Hardware RAID I'm not sure if it's a dedicated RAID card though) 7200RPM Nvidia GT570M Background: I tried to install 12.04 (64 bit) a few times but the Desktop live cd and pendrive boots with a black screen. I've tried wubi but it boots to a black screen as well. I then tried the alternative 12.04 (64 bit) and went through the installation all the way til partitioning. I let Ubuntu notice the raid setup and I setup my swap, /, and home drives, I used my free space to create the three partitions. I tried to resize the windows drive and it told me I couldn't and to be happy with my current setup. When I finally got past I got an error on installing GRUB 2 and decided to skip it and continued on to finish installation. When I tried to boot up I got an invalid partition table error. Windows recovery disc, and a GPARTED live cd couldn't find any hard drives. I ended up following advice and typed this into the recovery command prompt. bootrec /fixmbr bootrec /fixboot bootrec /rebuildBcd It worked and here I am now. The question is, how would I be able to dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 with this information? Thanks,

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • virtual box strectch to fit resolution

  Hey guys I have a really annoying problem, that I hope someone has figured out. I just installed ubuntu on virtual box and installed the guest additions so everything was great. I had a resolution that stretched across my screen from left to right and the only virtual box components that were visible were the windows vista title bar : minimize/exit/maximize buttons and virtual box controls at the bottom. Now all of a sudden now that I have installed the ubuntu 170mb of automatic updates, I see vertical and horizontal scroll bars that are part of virtual box and the ubuntu resolution will not stretch across my screen anymore. What I want is a ubuntu resolution that will stretch to fit the maximized window of virtual box, and remove the scroll bars. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it.
