• Mercurial hg clone error - "abort: error: Name or service not known"

  I have installed the latest hg package available for Fedora Linux. However, hg clone reports an error. hg clone http://localmachine001:8000/ repository reports: "abort: error: Name or service not known" localmachine001 is a computer within the local network. I can ping it from my Linux box without any problems. I can also use the same http address and browse the existing code. However, hg clone does not work. If I execute the same command from my Macintosh machine, I can easily clone the repository. Some Internet resources recommend editing .hgrc file, and adding proxy to it: [http_proxy] host=proxy:8080 I have tried that without any success. Also, I assume that proxy is not needed in this case, since the hg server machine is in my local network. Can anyone recommend me what should I do, or how could I track the problem? • TortoiseSVN: how to set up projects on a existing directory structure of source code

  I have an old pet project I want to revive (haven't had enough time for it last year - small kid - you know) - so restored old copy of my dev folder from archive, but since I have rebuilt my machine since when - I can't remember what needs to be done now. I installed the latest version of TortoiseSVN, and the existing directory structure from my old dev machine looks like: ProjectName *SubProject1 **branches ***1.1 ***1.2 **tags **trunk *SubProject2 **branches **1.0.3 **1.0.4 **1.0.5 **tags **trunk I tried "import project" but it ask for a url - don't know what to specify there ... can someone post a url to a good TortSVN tutorial - so I could set up my projects quickly (I guess I need to setup SubProject1 and SubProject2) - then I install AnkhSVN for VS2008 and will spend this Sunday coding like crazy while I still have some time ;-)

• SQL CE unspecified error

  Hello, I did a project with MS SQL Server CE that when installed in the 'costumer' machine just raises an unspecified excpetion. Did some research and looks like I did everything mentioned. The dev env has sql compact 3.5 installed and sql tools for vs 2005. Using dotNet 3.5. But to make it run in de dev machine I need to add the sqlcese30, sqlceqp30, sqlceme and sqlcecompact30 dlls and its works fine. The setup project put dotNet 2.0 as dependecy and I also added the dlls but it raises the exception and I cannot see where or what it is. Its just a single 'unspecified error' message. please help :)

• Silverlight 4 crashing every browser (SL3 doesn't)

  I am testing my application on a number of machines. It is fine on every machine except 1. I'm having problems with one XP machine where in internet explorer, chrome and firefox the Silverlight plugin crashes on EVERY page with Silverlight. Pages that used to work fine with silverlight 3 crash instantly - including my app and the Silverlight Beta 4 demo page!!! The browser crashes instantly and doesn't even attempt to load the page. I don't know how to debug this because there's no error. It just crashes instantly in all these browsers. Reinistalling, rebooting didn't fix the problem.

• Elisp performance on Windows and Linux

  I have the following dead simple elisp functions; the first removes the fill breaks from the current paragraph, and the second loops through the current document applying the first to each paragraph in turn, in effect removing all single line-breaks from the document. It runs fast on my low-spec Puppy Linux box using emacs 22.3 (10 seconds for 600 pages of Thomas Aquinas), but when I go to a powerful Windows XP machine with emacs 21.3, it takes almost an hour to do the same document. • shared library path inconsistent from one host to another

  I built my qt app so that all the Qt modules it uses are contained in the same directory as the executable. It works on the machine I used to build the app and I made sure to test this by removing those shared libraries everywhere except in the current directory of the app. Doing a ldd shows that its looking for those libraries in the current directory and putting the executable by itself fails to open the exectuable. So this is all good but when I transfer this directory to a host machine it still cant find those libraries. what could be the problem?

If permissions are already there, then why do we need to demand those? Code is executing on Server, so the permissions are on server not on client machine? Article takes an example of removing write permissions from an assembly to show security exception. Though in real world, System.IO assembly (or related classes) will take care of these permissions. So is there a real scenario where we will need CAS?

• Problem with Gallio and TeamCity and the new Visual Studio 2010 release

  I am running TeamCity on a virtual machine. I have installed the new Visual Studio 2010 release yesterday and converted my VS 2008 projects. I also have installed .NET Framework 4 on my virtual machine. Before yesterday all my projects were building succesfully on the CI server but since I installed VS 2010 I get the following error message : error MSB5014: File format version is not recognized. MSBuild can only read solution files between versions 7.0 and 9.0, inclusive. I did change my config on Team City to take into account the new .NET 4 framework : Build Runner : MSBuild Build File Path : CFT.msbuild MSBuild version : Microsoft.NET Framework 4.0 MSBuild ToolsVersion : 4.0 Run Platform : x86 I think it has something to do with the fact that now MSBuild must refer to .NET 4 framwork but it seems that it keeps refering to 2.0.

• Accessing TFS from Powershell

  Hello I am new to PowerShell and I am trying to get branches from TFS and merge them using a PowerShell script. Unfortunately I am failing a first hurdle. I do have Visual Studio 2010 install on my local machine and can access the TFS server (also 2010) fine. I am running the script from my local machine and have the following lines: $tfs = get-tfs http://TFSServerName:8080/TFSProject $branchfolders = $tfs.VCS.GetItems('$/Dev/Branches/', $tfs.RecursionType::OneLevel) and I receive the following error on the second line 2 above Exception calling "GetItems" with "2" argument(s): "Unable to connect to the remote server" I have configured the TFS server to accept incoming connections on port 8080 which works but I am now not to sure how to resolve this error. Is further configuration required? Thanks for any help given.

• How do I set DateTimeStamp on file after uploading to FTP?

  I have an application that deploys game data files to different gaming consoles. If matching files on the users machine and the console have identical size and dates, they must not be re-deployed. On Xbox, this is easily accomplished because an XDK library used to upload files on the console allows me to set the date on the uploaded files to match the dates on the user's machine. On Ps3 however, I use an FTP service running on the console. I use WebClient.UploadFileAsync to upload files to the console. However, I cannot figure out how I can set the uploaded file's date timestamp, leaving me with only the file size to determine identical files which is unsafe. I was wondering if there was a way to set a file's date timestamp through the WebClient interface?

• Oracle JDBC connection exception in Solaris but not Windows?

  I have some Java code that connects to an Oracle database using DriverManager.getConnection(). It works just fine on my Windows XP machine. • SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won't start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• Synchronising tables across remote Access databases

  Hi folks, I'm helping out a business by providing an Access DB to manage requests of various types. As they are a construction company, they have one machine in an 'office' on the building site, plus 3 based in their main office. The machine on site has no internet connectivity. Is there any (reasonably simple) way to synchronise these databases every so often? I realise the tables could be merged, but each has an autoincrement field which must be synced between instances (i.e. when merging two tables the autoincrement should be reassigned based on the combination of records).   Hi! I'm exhausted. I have installed GnuPG and exported secret key, and two public keys (my own and one of my client) from another instance of GnuPG. I try to configure 'my encrypting/decrypting' method on the local machine. When I run encrypting method from a little console application it works good. When I run this (same! - with the same body) method from my webservice on my local machine ... I have an ExitCode = 2. Happy in fact of catching the error message, but unhappy with their body. "gpg: no default secret key: secret key not available gpg: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.xml: sign+encrypt failed: secret key not available" What should I do? Whats wrong? Best regards, Karol Bladek

• Where do you store the private key for your code signing certificate?

  I recently acquired a code signing certificate for my employer, but I am not the InstallShield developer who will sign the binaries before distribution. I know I can export the certificate along with its private key, but where do I store it so the InstallShield developer can install it on his machine? Should I remove it from my machine once I give it to the person doing the signing? Where do I store the master copy? Obviously, source control is not the best place, unless I lock down that directory in SVN.

  I am aware of the multitude of questions here as well as Raymond's excellent (as usual) post. However, since the algorithm to create GUIDs was changed apparently, I found it hard to get my hands on any up-to-date information. The MSDN seems to try and provide as few information as possible. What is known about how GUIDs are generated in .NET 4? What was changed, and how does it affect the security ("randomness") and integrity ("uniqueness")? One specific aspect I'm interested in: In v1, it seems to be about impossible to generate the same GUID on a single machine again since there was a timestamp and counter involved. In v4, this is no longer the case (I was told), so the chance to get the same GUID on a single machine ... increased?

  I have JavaScript inside a .wsf file and I'm getting the error: C:\bin\LDLSInfo.wsf(53, 34) Windows Script Host: Cannot retrieve referenced URL: S:\tools\JScript\lib\StandardWSH.js At line 53, it says <script language="JScript" src="S:\tools\JScript\lib\StandardWSH.js"/> I know that LDLSInfo.wsf (the main script) and StandardWSH.js (the script to load) both work fine, because I've ran them from a different machine. It works fine on one machine and not on the other, both are Windows 7 x64 computers. So I'm thinking I'm missing some .dll's. Thanks for the help, -jb

• Memory mapped files causes low physical memory

  I have a 2GB RAM and running a memory intensive application and going to low available physical memory state and system is not responding to user actions, like opening any application or menu invocation etc. How do I trigger or tell the system to swap the memory to pagefile and free physical memory? I'm using Windows XP. If I run the same application on 4GB RAM machine it is not the case, system response is good. After getting choked of available physical memory system automatically swaps to pagefile and free physical memory, not that bad as 2GB system. To overcome this problem (on 2GB machine) attempted to use memory mapped files for large dataset which are allocated by application. In this case virtual memory of the application(process) is fine but system cache is high and same problem as above that physical memory is less. Even though memory mapped file is not mapped to process virtual memory system cache is high. why???!!! :( Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  I am using an example from iDesign about one way calls. I can get it to work on a Vista machine (VS2008) but not on a windows 7 machine (VS2010). I get this error: HTTP could not register URL http://+:8001/MyService/. Your process does not have access rights to this namespace ServiceHost host = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService)); host.Open(); I get the error on the host.Open(); line. I noticed that windows asks first for some firewall and to give permission which I did but still it is not working. What can I do?

• Django-pyodbc mssql/freetds server connection problems on linux

  Error: ('IM002', '[IM002] [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified (0) (SQLDriverConnectW)') I'm migrating from developing on a windows development machine to linux machine in production and I'm having issues with the freetds driver. As far as I can tell that error message means it can't find the driver. I can connect via the cli via sqsh and tsql. I've setup my settings.py as such. • Read and write from a byte stream if the endianess of the data is different from that of the current

  I have a stream of bytes which contains a flag which identifies the endianness of the data in the header. I want to read the doubles from the stream, which will presumably need to be different if the endianness of the data in the header is different? I am currently using a BinaryReader and calling ReadDouble to read the data from the stream, but if the endianness flag indicates that the data stream has a different endianness than the machine architecture then presumably this will not work? How should this be handled? Should I check the endianness of my data against that of the current machine then when I want to read a double instead read the bytes raw into a byte array and do array.Reverse to reverse the data before using BitConverter.ToDouble () with the reversed data and a zero offset? I could just test this but I do not have a source of data for both endianness so am a bit concerned about creating test data to test the parsing and this being different from what 'real' data might look like.

• Deploying WPF application: .NET 3.5 issues

  Hi all, Users around my country are currently beta-testing our application. My app uses WPF & Linq, so I need .NET 3.5 installation. On most system, everything works find, including automatic installation on .NET 3.5 on machines that do not have that installed yet. However, on one machine (XP SP2) my application does not run. The user reported no issues during .NET 3.5 installation (except for a process that need to close before the installer could continue - he closed the process and continued). The application crashes on startup. To debug this issue, I did the following: Have him reboot his machine Let him manually re-install the .NET 3.5 framework (no errors reported) Have him run a test WPF app that only displays a button - also crashes Let him send the .NET 3.5 installation logs - these are huge, don't now where to look Does anyone have strategy on how to debug such issues? I expect that this will occur more when the application is released..
