  • Permanently delete / hide a buddylist in Empathy

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and I have a problem using empathy. I added all of my contacts to gnome-contacts and linked them with the facebook-contacts from empathy. Now they show twice in Empathy, once in the list Facebook-Friends and once in Personal. The problem is that the list Facebook-Friends is the upper one and if i minimize or delete it it gets recovered when I restart empathy, but I need to see the Personal-list because it has all my contacts, those from Facebook and those from Google Talk.

  • Can't format / delete locked partition from gparted?

    I cannot format my hard disk for ubuntu installation. It has Fedora installed in it. I wonder how to unlock the locked partition to delete and format it, since I am stucked at installing ubuntu. I am now using a livecd to do the task. No options are available for me to use.   • Deleted windows partition, now I can't get into Ubuntu

    Back story: I installed ubuntu with wubi. I had windows on one NTFS partition, then I made a new NTFS partition in which I put wubi in and where My ubuntu OS was born. Eventually I moved /home into another partition and made a swap partition, but I digress. I deleted My original NTFS partition where windows is not thinking it would not matter but now I can't get into ubuntu. And the weird thing is that when I boot my computer I still see the option to boot into both windows and ubuntu. When I try to boot into windows, It tries to fix stuff and never succeds. When I try to boot into ubuntu, it shows me "cannot find GRLDR in all devices. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart". so, what do you guys think? I just want ubuntu running again, with all my stuff in /home there and all my system preferences how I like them.

  • Windows XP, have to use ctrl+alt+delete to log on as local administrator

    Hey, I have a weird issue, a user was was logging into a laptop using the local admin account which was working fine. I had to create another account on the system, which was also an admin account, when this happened the 'administrator' account disappeared from the 'choose an account to login with' screen. A quick workaround is available, if the user presses ctrl+alt+delete it brings you to the screen where you can type in the username and password, so by manually typing 'administrator' it can log in. Normally this would be easily fixed, I figured the admin account had somehow been disabled from the local system, but i checked all settings and it is setup fine. The laptop is not part of a domain, so I used the management console to delete the new account and all that succeeded in doing was making the 'choose an account to log in with' screen display no accounts to choose. So far I see nothing else to fix it, the option to change the default logon screen to style where you type the username and password also seems to be missing. any ideas?

    I use Ubuntu for programming. I recently updated it from 11.04 to 11.10. There are some things I don't like in the new version of Unity desktop interface. I don't actually know if it is hard to restore previous behavior or not, and if it is not, where should I look to do that. I know a bit of programming, but I really don't know much about Linux settings. I used to have 3-6 terminal windows and switch between them with Alt+Tab and Shift+Alt+Tab. I liked half-transparent terminal windows, since with them I could open web-page with some instruction in Firefox, press Alt+Tab and type commands in a console window, being able to recognize text on a web-page under it. Now I have problems with my usual work-style because of the following. List of "negative" changes Alt+Tab shows just one icon for all console windows. When I wait some time, it, however, shows all windows, but I don't like to wait. I prefer to remember order of windows and press Alt+Tab as many times as I need to switch to the right window. Alt+Shift+Tab to switch in reverse order doesn't work now. Console windows are not transparent any more. When I don't wait, and switch to this icon, it shows all console windows altogether. So even if they were transparent, I wouldn't be able to see anything below them (I can read something only from the window, which is directly under current one, not a few levels under). When I run a few console windows in Unity I had 740Mb used on Ubuntu 11.04, but I have 1050Mb now. The question is how to make it back to 750-. I really need my memory, since I use my computer to work with 1512Mb of data and I try to save every 10Mb possible (if it doesn't take too much of machine and, more importantly, my time). When I press "The Super key" I have a field to type the name of the program I want to run. But now it sometimes shows this field, but when I'm trying to type nothing happens. Probably, focus is not on the right field. I don't really mean to restore exactly the same behavior, but I want to make my work in Ubuntu 11.10 efficient (at least as efficient as in Ubuntu 11.04). I would be happy if there are some ways to accomplish that. What have I tried I have installed CompizConfig Settings Manager. I have read this question. However enabling "Static Application Switcher" makes Alt+Tab crazy: after enabling it It says about key-binding conflicts with "Ubuntu Unity Plugin"; "Alt+Tab" switching doesn't change, but "Shift+Alt+Tab" now works and shows all windows; Memory usage increases. I have tried turning off Ubuntu Unity Plugin, but this doesn't seem right thing to do, since it seems to turn off all menus, a lot of keystrokes and app-launcher, which usually activates with "The Super key". I have found, that window transparency can be enabled by "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation" plugin from Accessibility. However I don't know if enabling it is the right thing to do (at least it increases memory usage). Update: everything solved but #3: see my own answer below. I have made a separate question about issue #3 (transparency).

Adding a number to a pointer shifts it forward in memory by those many number of sizeof(*p) units. So, what is the difference between delete p and delete p+1, and why would making the pointer 0 only be a problem with delete p+1?

    I have, in EF5, two entities: User and Role. Between User and Role there is a many to many relation. I don't have an entity for the UserRoles database which sets the relation. I have a User and I want to delete a role without loading it from the database.     Hi all, Is it possible to delete-protect a file/folder using Registry or using a custom written Windows Service in C#? Using Folder Permissions it is possible, but i am looking for a solution that even restricts the admin from deleting specific folders. The requirement is that the administrator must not be easily track the nature of protection and/or may not be able to avert it easily. Obviously all administrators will be able to revert the procedure if the technique is clearly understood. Like folder Permissions/OwnerShip Settings can easily be reset by an administrator. SO that is not an option. Folder protection software can easily be uninstalled and show clear indication that a particular folder is protected by some special kind of software. SO that too is not an option. Most antivirus programs protect folders and files in Program Dir. Windows itself doesnt allow certain files such as registry files in c:\windows\system32\config to not even copied. Such a protection is desired for folders which allowse to read and write to files but not allow deletion. Similar functionality is desired. The protection has to seemless and invisible. I do not want to use any protection features like FolderLock and Invisible secrets/PC Security and Desktop password etc. Moreover, the solution has to be something other than folder encryption. The solution has to be OS-native so ** that it may implemented ** pro grammatically using C#/VB.Net. Please help. Thanks

    I can't seem to locate recent commands I've run when I do Ctrl + R in my terminal, nor can I see them when I hit the up arrow. It was a long command. Is there a length limit to what is stored? I may have used sudo. Is sudo history stored somewhere else? If so how do I access it? Much thanks for any insight.
