• Deeplinking with SWFAddress and Facebook connect

  After prompting the user for the login and submitting it's details, my application appears in the facebook lightbox instead of the browser window. This is not the case when I remove the SWFAddress params (all the info after the hash in the URL bar). Is it possible to tell the API to ignore the info after the hash or is there a way i can determine the redirect URL myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated,

• jQuery Address changed event

  I'm trying my hand at jQuery Address http://www.asual.com/jquery/address/ On a click event I set $.address.value(mypath); This fires off the $.address.change() event. When I click a link I want the behavior to be slightly different than when this event is fired by clicking the back/forward button or with a bookmark or link. Is there a way to distinguish between the two events. I've looked at the event object passed to $.address.change() and they seem to be identical in both situations.

• jQuery Address - redirect after form submit

  Hello all, I use jQuery and AJAX to load content from links and forms into a content div. In addition I use the Address plugin to enable the back button and refresh. On the server side I use Java and Spring MVC. Since I'm using jQuery Address and AJAX the only page that is directly loaded is "index.html". Everything else is loaded into a content div, and what page to load is specified in the hash, ie. "index.html#/users/add.html" will load "users/add.html". Now, "users/add.html" contains a form for creating a new user. When the form is submitted and everything went OK, the controller redirects to "users/index.html". The problem is that jQuery Address doesn't know about the redirect, so the url will remain "index.html#/users/add.html". And this is a problem when you refresh the page and then get sent back to the form, instead of the index page. Is there a way to fix this problem? Thanks, Stian

• jQuery Address Plugin - Not allowing loading ajax?

  I am trying to test the jQuery Address Plugin and it seems to not allow ajax to work in the change function. I am using: $.address.change(function(event) { $('#content').load(event.value+' #content'); $.address.title(event.value); }); $('a').click(function() { $.address.value($(this).attr('href')); }); While I can use event.value for other things, it just does not seem to let the .load() function work. Even trying a static URL in .load() does nothing. Is something in the plugin preventing this? I thought this was the point of the plugin!

• Can I update window.location.hash without having the web page scroll?

  Using JavaScript, is there a way to update window.location.hash without scrolling the web page? I have clickable title elements that toggle the visibility of a div directly beneath them. I want the /foo#bar in the history when clicking titles but don't want the page scrolling about. So when navigating away from /foo#bar I'll be able to use the back button and have the div whose ID is in window.location.hash be visible upon return. Is this behavior possible?

  If you just consider the second part of my question, "Why a developer should not be interrupted while neck-deep in coding", that has been discussed a number of times by smart people. Heck, even the co-founder of SO, Joel Spolsky, wrote a blog post about "getting in the zone" and "being knocked out of the zone" and why it takes an average of 15 minutes to achieve productivity when participating in complex, software development related tasks. So I think the why has been established. What I'm interested in is how to explain all that to somebody who doesn't know beans about Beans (khmm I mean software development). How to tell the wife, or the funny guy from accounting at the workplace, or the long time friend who pings you on Skype every 30 minutes with a "Wazzzzzzup?!", that all the interruptions have a much deeper impact on your work than the obvious 30 seconds they took from your time. Obviously you can't explain it by sentences like "I have to juggle a lot of variable names in my short term memory" unless you want to be the target of blank stares or friendly abuse. I'd like to be able to explain all that to non-developers in a way that will make them clearly understand - without being offensive, elitist or too technical.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for their great insights. I've accepted EpsilonVector's answer as his analogy was the closest one to my original needs. The "falling asleep" explanation is neither offensive nor technical, almost anyone can relate to it, and the consequences of getting disturbed while falling asleep or while being in the zone are very similar: you experience frustration and you "lose" 15-20 minutes of time.

• Why would Copying a Large Image to the Clipboard Freeze a Computer?

  Sometimes, something really odd happens when using our computers that makes no sense at all…such as copying a simple image to the clipboard and the computer freezing up because of it. An image is an image, right? Today’s SuperUser post has the answer to a puzzled reader’s dilemna. Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. Original image courtesy of Wikimedia. The Question SuperUser reader Joban Dhillon wants to know why copying an image to the clipboard on his computer freezes it up: I was messing around with some height map images and found this one: (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/Srtm_ramp2.world.21600×10800.jpg) The image is 21,600*10,800 pixels in size. When I right click and select “Copy Image” in my browser (I am using Google Chrome), it slows down my computer until it freezes. After that I must restart. I am curious about why this happens. I presume it is the size of the image, although it is only about 6 MB when saved to my computer. I am also using Windows 8.1 Why would a simple image freeze Joban’s computer up after copying it to the clipboard? The Answer SuperUser contributor Mokubai has the answer for us: “Copy Image” is copying the raw image data, rather than the image file itself, to your clipboard. The raw image data will be 21,600 x 10,800 x 3 (24 bit image) = 699,840,000 bytes of data. That is approximately 700 MB of data your browser is trying to copy to the clipboard. JPEG compresses the raw data using a lossy algorithm and can get pretty good compression. Hence the compressed file is only 6 MB. The reason it makes your computer slow is that it is probably filling your memory up with at least the 700 MB of image data that your browser is using to show you the image, another 700 MB (along with whatever overhead the clipboard incurs) to store it on the clipboard, and a not insignificant amount of processing power to convert the image into a format that can be stored on the clipboard. Chances are that if you have less than 4 GB of physical RAM, then those copies of the image data are forcing your computer to page memory out to the swap file in an attempt to fulfil both memory demands at the same time. This will cause programs and disk access to be sluggish as they use the disk and try to use the data that may have just been paged out. In short: Do not use the clipboard for huge images unless you have a lot of memory and a bit of time to spare. Like pretty graphs? This is what happens when I load that image in Google Chrome, then copy it to the clipboard on my machine with 12 GB of RAM: It starts off at the lower point using 2.8 GB of RAM, loading the image punches it up to 3.6 GB (approximately the 700 MB), then copying it to the clipboard spikes way up there at 6.3 GB of RAM before settling back down at the 4.5-ish you would expect to see for a program and two copies of a rather large image. That is a whopping 3.7 GB of image data being worked on at the peak, which is probably the initial image, a reserved quantity for the clipboard, and perhaps a couple of conversion buffers. That is enough to bring any machine with less than 8 GB of RAM to its knees. Strangely, doing the same thing in Firefox just copies the image file rather than the image data (without the scary memory surge). Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the comments. • Why does my Ubuntu freeze in the middle of something with a blank screen?

  I am facing a serious problem as my Dell Optiplex 745 loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit freezes with a blank screen no mouse cursor no keyboard activity in many occasions. Sometimes when I open firefox, or software center, I really can't tell what the main problem is, but what i am certain about is it i have to do a hard reset to reboot. I tried to use a live-cd to boot but it did the same, tried the recovery console but couldn't find a way to fix from there (I am a new user) suspected a hardware problem but windows runs flawlessly so I believe its something related to ubuntu. Specs: Intel Celeron D 3.06 GHZ 3.0 GB ram Intel built in graphics Q965 1 TB HDD Bios Phoenex 2.6.4 Please help I really love ubuntu and I don't want to go back to windows!

  In a garbage collection based system, what is the most effective way to handle a read only array if such a structure does not exist natively in the language. Is it better to return a copy of an array or allow other classes to retrieve copies of the objects stored in the array one by one? @JustinSkiles: It is not very broad. It is performance related and can actually be answered specifically for two general cases. You only need very few items: in this situation it's more effective to retrieve copies of the objects one by one. You wish to iterate over 30% or more objects. In this cases it is superior to retrieve all the array at once. This saves on functions calls. Function calls are very expansive when compared to reading directly from an array. A good specific answer could include performance, reading from an array and reading indirectly through a function. It is a simple performance related question.

• Why does video playback lag/freeze when I go into full-screen mode?

  When I try to play my video files in SMPlayer it works fine but as soon as I switch to fullscreen mode(16:9) following thing happens: 1) Video starts lagging. 2) Audio and video goes out of sync. 3) CPU usage rises to ~50%. 4) SMPlayer starts to hang. My current SMPlayer configuration: 1)Video Output Driver = x11(slow) 2)Audio Output Driver = alsa(0.0-HDA Intel) 3)Cache = 8192 KB 4)Threads for decoding(MPEG-1/2 and H.264 only = 2 Things I tried solve this problem: 1) Tried changing video o/p driver to xv,gl. 2) Tried changing audio o/p driver to pulse. 3) Tried increasing cache size and also tried using nocache. Everything works fine on windows but I don't want to switch to windows just to play video files. My system config: Acer Aspire One D270 Atom N2600(Cedar Trail) 1.6GHz 2GB Memory Intel GMA 3600 graphics. Ubuntu 12.04 Kernel Release: 3.2.0-23-generic-pae Rest all things are working fine I have no resolution issue, bluetooth, wireless also working fine. • Why does creating dynamic bodies in JBox2D freeze my app?

  My game hangs/freezes when I create dynamic bullet objects with Box2D and I don't know why. I am making a game where the main character can shoot bullets by the user tapping on the screen. Each touch event spawns a new FireProjectileEvent that is handled properly by an event queue. So I know my problem is not trying to create a new body while the box2d world is locked. My bullets are then created and managed by an object pool class like this: public Projectile getProjectile(){ for(int i=0;i<mProjectiles.size();i++){ if(!mProjectiles.get(i).isActive){ return mProjectiles.get(i); } } return mSpriteFactory.createProjectile(); } mSpriteFactory.createProjectile() leads to the physics component of the Projectile class creating its box2d body. I have narrowed the issue down to this method and it looks like this: public void create(World world, float x, float y, Vec2 vertices[], boolean dynamic){ BodyDef bodyDef = new BodyDef(); if(dynamic){ bodyDef.type = BodyType.DYNAMIC; }else{ bodyDef.type = BodyType.STATIC; } bodyDef.position.set(x, y); mBody = world.createBody(bodyDef); PolygonShape dynamicBox = new PolygonShape(); dynamicBox.set(vertices, vertices.length); FixtureDef fixtureDef = new FixtureDef(); fixtureDef.shape = dynamicBox; fixtureDef.density = 1.0f; fixtureDef.friction = 0.0f; mBody.createFixture(fixtureDef); mBody.setFixedRotation(true); } If the dynamic parameter is set to true my game freezes before crashing, but if it is false, it will create a projectile exactly how I want it just doesn't function properly (because a projectile is not a static object). Why does my program fail when I try to create a dynamic object at runtime but not when I create a static one? I have other dynamic objects (like my main character) that work fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a screenshot of a method profile I did: Especially notable is number 8. I'm just still unsure what I'm doing wrong. Other notes: I am using JBox2D 2.1.2.2. (Upgraded from 2.1.2.1 to try to fix this problem) When the application freezes, if I hit the back button, it appears to move my game backwards by one update tick. Very strange.

• Why does Live-USB boot freeze at the moving dots?

  I am currently trying to boot into Ubuntu 12.04 x86 using a USB. I used Untetbootin to do all that boot crap and what not. But for some reason Ubuntu wont load pass that screen with the dots and the purple background. What happens is the dots all light up once, then they go back to white then they all light up at the same time and then it just gets stuck there. Ive even tried using an x64 copy (since my CPU supports it) but have no luck with that either. Ive even tried different DISTRIBUTIONS of Linux and all have failed with loading. Please help

• System freeze after opening Wi-Fi menu can boot into the machine and use Internet in recovery mode

  So right now sitting in front of my Alienware area 51 desktop. It has a Broadcom Netlink BCM 5784M gigabit ethernet PCI E card. Most of the time able to get through the login screen and to the main screen if I click on the wireless settings on the top right-hand corner the system immediately freezes the cursor does not move at all keyboards are unresponsive. I was doing some quick Google searching and I found a suggestion to boot into recovery mode I did this and did a apt-get Distribution update which ran successfully installed then I rebooted into the regular system same thing I'm pretty sure it's the network card because even if I don't click the settings if a network related dialog opens such as disconnection or connection the system again immediately freezes. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 ** update 1 ** Just was able to use my system for a little bit however when I went into Firefox and hit the web it again froze so obviously a driver problem but I'm not sure how to get drivers for Broadcom which apparently according to the description on stack-overflow is terrible Any ideas? Sorry for lack of punctuation on an ipad.

  I'm considering adding robots "noindex, follow" tags to the very numerous product data pages that are linked from the product style pages in our online store. For example, each product style has a page with full text content on the product: http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE Then many data pages with technical data for each model code is linked from the product style page. http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-1 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-2 http://www.shop.example/Product/Category/Style/SOME-STYLE-CODE-3 It is these technical data pages that I intend to add the no index code to, as I imagine that this might stop these pages from cannibalizing keyword authority for more important content rich pages on the site. Any advice appreciated.

• 13.10 Saucy login issues; black screen, loop, and freeze

  Once upgraded to I 13.10 I was not able to get past the login screen. I had the black screen. Also; I can not log on with low graphics mode from recovery either. It makes no difference if I try default graphics driver or not. Then after running sudo install -f from recovery root prompt I got a login loop. I have purged fglrx, fglrx-legacy, and nvidia-current. I updated my repository with xorg-edgers and reinstalled nvidia-current. Now it semi-freezes at the login screen when I try to log on as my normal user. I say 'semi' because I can still use my mouse to click on the upper right hand Ubuntu logo and Shut Down or Restart the PC. I still cannot log on with my user name, but I can through the Guest login. While logged in as Guest I added a new user account with administrative privileges. I CAN log into this account without problem and from here am able to see that my .dmrc file in my original account reads: [Desktop] Session=XBMC I have changed 'Session=XBMC' to 'Session=ubuntu' and rebooted, but to no avail. The file resets itself and makes a backup of my changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How do I dig myself out of this DEEP hole? [closed]

  I may be a bit bias in the way i word this but any opinions and suggestions are welcome. I should start by saying i have a MSc in CS and a degree in new media +6 years expereince and im probably around a middleweight developer. I started a web development company with my friend from uni a year ago, there was a 4 month gap in the middle where i went miles away work on a big project. Ive since returned and picked up where we left off. A year on though i find im still staying up til 5am and getting up at 9 sometimes 2-3 days without sleep. While i was away i was working 9-5 and struggling to keep up with doing stuff for my clients 8 hours ahead, after work, so things stagnated. We currently have about 12 active projects, with one other part time developer and a full time freelancer who is dealing with one of our major projects. I am solely responsible for concurrently developing 2 big sites similar to gumtree in functionality, at the same time as about 5-6+ small WordPress based 5-10page sites. a lot of the content isnt in yet or the client is delaying so i chop and change project every other day which does my head in. Is it reasonable to expect myself to remember the intricate details of each project when i come back to it a week later? and remember the details of a task which hasnt been written down? my business partner seems to think so. or am i just forgetful? Im particularly bad at estimating timescales which doesnt help, added to that a lot of the technologies im am using are new to me (a magento site took weeks to theme rather than days and was full of bugs, even after 1000's of google searches and hours reading forums) im still trying to learn and find the best CMS for us to use and getting my head around the likes of Bootstrap and jquery, Cpanel / Linux (we just got a blank vps for me to set up with no experience) even installing an SSL certificate caused everyone's mail clients to go down which was more stress for me to sort out. I find the pressure of the workload and timescales and trying to learn this stuff so fast is beginning to turn me against my career path. The fact that i never seem to get anything done really winds up my business partner and iv come to associate him with the stress and pain of the whole situation especially when I get berated or a look that says "oh you retard" when I forget something. Even today i spent hours learning how a particular themeforest theme worked with wordpress and how i could twist it to work for our partiuclar needs, on the surface had done no work, that triggered a 30 minute tirade of anger and stress and questioning what i had done from my business partner. had i taken too long to work on that? shoudl i have done it in 2 hours instead of 6? i told him i would take 2 hours. i was wrong. I feel like im running myself into the ground. My sleeping pattern has got so bad that when im working im half asleep and making mistakes, my eyes are constantly purple underneath, i literally fall asleep at my desk, its affecting my social life too, ive not slept more than lightly for the last year and grind through impossible code puzzles in my half sleep wich keeps me awake, when im already exhausted. plus the work is rushed and buggy when it does get done so drags on into the next project. I also procrastinate quite badly, pacing the livingroom, looking out the window when Im alone for three days straight in the flat and start to get cabin fever which means i do even less work and the negative feedback loop continues. I get told im the only one with the problem when i say that i cant work from home any more, and examples of other freelancers get brought up. an office wouldnt bring any extra cash in to the company but im convinced having that moving more than 2 meters away from my bed to go to "work" would get me working, at the moment i feel guilty like i should be working 24-7. It is important that we do all this work to raise enough cash to get our business to the next level but every month still feels like a struggle to pay the rent (there is about £20K coming in by Jan) and i have to borrow money from friends often to buy food or get a taxi to a meeting, so it is vital the money keeps coming in. (im also 20 mins late for nearly all meetings but thats a different issue) have you experienced anything similar? how can i deal with the issues ive raised? is it realistic to develop 10 sites at once? how can i improve my relationship with my business partner? do you struggle to work at home? how do you deal with that? i think if i dont get my life on track by feb i will seriously consider giving it all up, but that seems like such a waste. any ideas!!? i need help!
