  The three-step JCP evolution consists of the following JSRs: • JSR 348, JCP transparency • JSR 355, Merging the two existing Executive Committees • JSR 358, complex issues moved postponed from JSR 348 The JSR 348 is already completed and JSR 355 is scheduled to be complete later this year. JSR 358 was recently filed and plans to revise several items such as modify the JSPA, Process Document, and a large number of complex issues. Because of the nature and scope of work, the Expert Group consists of representatives from all companies in the Executive Committee. Following the process set by JSR 348, all the work is done in open at jsr358.java.net. All the email discussions are here and JIRA here. Read Patrick Curran's blog for more details as well. • Servlet 3.1 Early Draft Now Available

  JSR 340 has released an Early Draft of the Servlet 3.1 specification. Other than the usual clarifications and javadoc updates, ProtocolHandler and WebConnection are new classes that encapsulates the protocol upgrade processing. This will typically be used for upgrading an HTTP connection to a WebSocket. Section 2.3.3.5 in the specification provide more details on it. Section 3.7 explain non-blocking request processing by the Web container. ReadListener and WriteListener are new interfaces that represents a call-back mechanism to read and write data without blocking. As with other Java EE 7 specifications, progress can be tracked at servlet-spec.java.net. The Expert Group discussions are archived and you can participate by sending an email to [email protected].

• In terms of SEO, is it better to have a URL broken down by folder, or with dashed names?

  I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance.   I'd like to reach out to the community on this one. As a software developer, I'm not an expert salesperson or marketing guru - I think in code and not much else. Most developers I come across are like this and also tend to be serious penny-pinchers. Let's say, as a developer, I recently released a new software product that I'm pretty sure will be a hit IF people only knew about it. Assume a budget of $0.00 and limited time each day (i.e. 30 to 60 minutes). What can I do, within those limitations, to maximize exposure? • Minecraft program frame rate is very slow

  I have recently downloaded Minecraft to Ubuntu 12.04. It launches and plays successfully, however- the frame rates for the game are extremely slow. They never go past 9 fps and usually drop below 3 fps. I have been a Windows XP user for years and have just recently switched to Ubuntu, so I'm not an expert with this OS. My video card is a Diamond Stealth s60 with Radeon 7000. I don't know what other information you guys need but if you ask for it, and would please tell me how to get to it, I will tell you as soon as I can. Thanks for your help.

• How can I acheive a smooth 2D lighting effect?

  I'm making a tile based game in XNA. So currently my lightning looks like this: How can I get it to look like this? Instead of each block having its own tint, it has a smooth overlay. I'm assuming some sort of shader, and to tell it the lighting and blur it some how. But im not an expert with shaders. My current lighting calculates the light, and then passes it to a spritebatch and draws with a color parameter. EDIT: No longer uses spritebatch tint, I was testing and now pass parameters to set the light values. But still looking for a way to smooth it.

• Would it be practical/secure to import my GPG keys into (Open)SSH?

  I know a bit about computer security, and well as about the concept of public and private keys. I also know that both GPG and (Open)SSH use the public/private key system. My question is, is there any reason that I would not want to use my GPG keys as authentication for SSH? Please note that, while a have a little bit more experience with Linux, GPG, and SSH than the average computer user, I am by no means an expert. Please be patient and point out any mistakes that you might see.

• Ubuntu 12.04 Hangs with Software Center open then opening Dash Home

  I have a Dell D610 - Intel graphics - 1 Gig RAM. I have test the hard drive and RAM and both are fine. When I open Software Center, then Dash home my system locks up. The mouse cursor moves but is unresponsive if I try to right or left click anything. The keyboard is totally unresponsive and I have to hold the power button to power off! I have reinstalled from CD, did all updates but the issue persists. I tried using the track pad only, and I plugged in an external mouse also but no change. Everything else works great ! I am sick of running Vista and have no love for Metro! Thanks for any suggestions, on a scale of 1 to 10 (Newbie - Expert) I am about 3

  As a developer/software engineer, what would you say are the most helpful resources when attempting to learn and use a new system? If you had to integrate a new SDK into your codebase/application, which one of the following options would you much rather go with? documentation tutorials video tutorials Same question for learning a new framework (e.g. writing an iOS app, learning Python, integrating the Android SDK, etc.). I'm not referring to becoming an expert, just get to know enough to use a system/language/framework properly. This is a pretty general question, but I think it's very relevant to anyone who's doing engineering work, since learning how to use new systems quickly is a very important skill to have. Thank you!

I haven't been able to access Ubuntu 12.04 since Windows 8.1 did some updates a few weeks back. Grub shows up and I can't see windows 8.1. How can I add Windows 8 using Boot Repair? I figured out how to install boot-repair in Ubuntu 14.04 by doing this workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/boot-repair/+bug/1267702 Most important thing: How can I add Windows 8.1 to the Grub menu using Boot Repair? • What kind of math should I be expecting in advanced programming?

  And I don't mean just space shooters and such, because in non-3D environments it's obvious that not much beyond elementary math is needed to implement. Most of the programming in 2D games is mostly going to involve basic arithmetic, algorithms for enemy AI and dimensional worlds, rotation, and maybe some Algebra as well depending on how you want to design. But I ask because I'm not really gifted with math at all. I get frustrated and worn out just by doing Pre-Algebra, so Algebra 2 and Calculus would likely be futile for me. I guess I'm not so "right-brained" when it comes down to pure numbers and math formulas, but the bad part is that I'm no art-expert either. What do you people here suppose I should do? Go along avoiding as much of the extremely difficult maths I can't fathom, or try to ease into more complex math as I excel at programming?

  I have a betting type site where I publish a number (between 0-100) that is encrypted. Then after a period of time, I would review what the number is and prove it with a key to decrypt the encrypted number to prove that I'm not cheating. I also want it to be easily verifiable by an average user. What encryption algorithm/technique/package should I use? I'm no expert on cryptography. There seems to be so many options out there and I'm not sure what to use. python friendly is a plus.

• How does Google store search trends in backend?

  Google trends shows what query has been searched how many times and some other properties of the said query. But how is this data stored in a database? Storing a new row for every search does not seem right. They also tell the query on a time graph, so they must have some way to look for individual searches made by users, but the number of queries they get every day, it does not feel right that they would store every search in a database row along with a time-stamp. This does not apply to just Google trends or Google in general but any other big site that gets awful number of queries and then has tools to see them in depth. I am not an expert on this but I am interested to know some high level structure of how things work behind the scenes.

  I want to write a game as my final year diploma project.(I'm a 4th-year-student now so I've got a year and several months). But I don't know what to choose: either write my own game engine using DirectX9(10)(I don't like OpenGL) or use OGRE + PhysX(Don't like Unity) I'm more interested in writing my own game engine(but I wonder if I'll create engine on the same level as even Unreal 1.0 hah) but on the other side with PhysX I'll have advanced physics in my game and with OGRE I'll have good grahics. For 3d models I want to use Maya. What do you advise me to choose? As for me I've got a little DirectX experience,not bad C++ programming skills(but not expert's) and a little knowledge of Maya. My English isn't perfect either hah...

• Make recovery disk for customers

  I hear about other computer shops that sells customers recovery disks that they have created. I'm assuming all that they do is make a image and uses an automation script that allows this to be done. I have seen where clonezilla does this, but it has to be the same HDD size or they might have problems down the road. Is there any other freeware that I could do this with that allows you to use on any size disk. Ghost is really good for this because it automatically fills up empty space with the partition and never needs any user input or "Expert Mode" like clonezilla. But it is not freeware.

  My customer, a translations business owner, just told me that he has been reading about Ruby on Rails and told me that "there are more PHP guys around there" and "it seems the community prefers it". What would you, as software engineer and freelancer, say to the customer to achieve these goals: Sell Make him see that the technology is my expert decision and Rails is as good or better than PHP (+ whatever framework) for this particular project.
