  • Hard Disk based storage library

    We have a Tandberg T24 tape device to handle all of our long term backups right now. We decided that we're not backing up nearly everything that we would like to and that we still have a lot of vulnerabilities. To get to where we want to be, we're going to have to back up a lot more servers than we're currently doing. All of our internal servers have some sort of directly attached drive (I.e. LaCie Raid box or a simple portable hard drive) doing backups, but what we want to do is get those backups off-site. The current tape drive is directly attached via SCSI to a Windows Server 2008 File Server. So to back up anything to tape, it has to be funneled through the File Server. With the current increase that we have planned, I don't think that funneling everything through the File Server is the right course of action and I'm thinking that maybe a second backup device would be more appropriate. I would like your input on a couple of ideas. 1) Doing HDD instead of tape. Tape is hard to deal with. We have a regular rotation cycle, so they don't need years and years of shelf life, so I'm wondering if something HDD-based would be better. 2) Something accessible over the network. Instead of having the device directly attached to one specific machine, have it available to all the servers over the network. Our File Server is a 12-disk raid 6 set up.. I was thinking something like that, but with no raid involved, all disks are stand alone so they can be used/installed/removed on an individual basis. Does any such thing exist? Thanks for your ideas. I'm really interested to hear about some of the solutions you guys are using..

    We have a SQL Server that has important databases for our clients, if the server goes down we want another server to be ready to be switched over (we would just change the IP). The question is, how can we automatically sync the primary SQL Server to the secondary one periodically through out the day? Or even in real time? Thanks!

  • Adding a web folder via command line (Windows)

    I am trying to add a web folder via command line in windows. At first I though I should use the "net use" command, but when I tried I kept getting System error 67: C:net use * http://dev.subdomain.domain.tdl/dav/ the user name for 'dev.subdomain.domain.tdl': correctusername the password for dev.subdomain.domain.tdl: System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found. The url I used works in a browser. It's an Apache dav on basic auth LDAP authentication method being used. Here's the thing... I CAN create a web folder when I use the "Add a network place" wizard. When I do net use, I don't see it listed in the prompt that follows. What utility do I need to use to mount a web folder in command line?

    When I start up windows normally it just freezes , I click "Launch Startup Repair" I get this: "Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removable is properly connected and then restart your computer If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer" How do I fix this problem?

  • Computer wont start, just blinks on and off

    This is really strange. I had a comp that was working fine for over a year, then suddenly it started to shut off, it got so bad that I press the power button and in around 30 secs while booting windows it would shut off, then 20 secs... then 10 secs, then it refused to start all together. So I bought a new PSU (850w Thermaltake, the old one was 550w corsair) thinking that was the problem, I fitted the new PSU now and its the same thing, I press the power button and my fans start for a split second (they have led lights on them, so the lights come on) and then everything goes off again. I thought maybe it was my power button that was loose on my comp, luckily I had another chassis near by so I disconnected the powerSW from the old one and put ran the powerSW from the new chassis, press the power on the new chassis and same thing, it blinks for a split second and off again. Double checked connections from the PSU to the cpu power as well as board mobo power, its tight. It's pretty unlikely both the PSUs have the same exact problem so am lost... Suggestions?

  • Permissions error when creating desktop shortcut

    Hey guys, I have a user that's got a weird permissions problem on Windows 7. He's trying to create a shortcut for Outlook on his desktop(he doesn't want it in his start menu or his taskbar...). If we right click the outlook.exe and do Send to Desktop, it works just fine. If we do a search for "outlook" in the search bar, and then try and drag and drop the outlook icon to the desktop, we get the error message "You need Permission to perform this action. You require permission from SYSTEM to make changes to this file: Microsoft Office Outlook 2007". Dragging and dropping other exe's onto the desktop work just fine. They create shortcuts without any problems. But if I try to do ANY of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc..) I get this permission error. Any ideas? He's using an A.D. account and he's in the local administrators group. He's an executive so he's not accepting "this isn't a real problem because I found another way to make a shortcut" as an answer. Any help is appreciated.

  • How to create location blocks in nginx for a single file but have it follow the rules of another location block in addition to it's own?

    I have a location block for / that does all of my fastcgi stuff and it has a normal timeout of 10s. I want to be able to have different timesouts for certain files(/admin, sitemap.xml).   • second monitor wont display

    hi all my problem is this: i have one video card (radeon hd 4350) and 2 monitors (dell). the first monitor works using dvi-to-dvi. the second does not, using hdmi-to-dvi. the monitor does not register any input. however when i use vga-to-vga, the second monitor does work, with a typically low vga resolution. we have tested the hdmi-to-dvi cable, so why does the monitor not register any input? using windows vista. i have installed all the lastest drivers, done all the basic stuff etc. any help at all would be appreciated. thanks

    Is there a better way to do this? I can't find a way to nest or apply boolean operators to conditions in nginx. Basically if there is a cookie set(non-anonymous user) we want to hit the server.   • cannot get mssql working with sql server 2005

    I'm a MySQL/Apache user, trying my hand with IIS and SQL server, so please, if this is a stupid question have patience. I'm using IIS version 7.5. PHP version 5.3.13 and SQL server 2005 IIS is running on port 90, not sure if that will make a difference or not. I know my sql server is running because I can explore/connect to it in Server management studio. I know php is configured properly, because //localhost:90/phpinfo.php works fine. I updated the php_msql.dll extension in phpinfo to: extension=ext/php_msql.dll EDIT- However, when I run phpinfo() under the "configure command" row, this is present: --without-mssql I found/downloaded the ntwdblib.dll and placed it in both sys32 and php root. All these things were supposed to fix the issue, and they haven't. This is the code I'm using, straight from php.net: <?php // Server in the this format: <computer>\<instance name> or // <server>,<port> when using a non default port number $server = 'localhost'; // Connect to MSSQL $link = mssql_connect($server, 'uname', 'pwd'); if (!$link) { die('Something went wrong while connecting to MSSQL'); } ?> obviously I'm using a real username and password, but when I load the file in my browser, I receive a 500 error.   • sudo rejects password that is correct

    sudo (Which I have configured to ask for a password) is rejecting my password (as if I mis-typed it) I am absolutely not typing it incorrectly. I have changed the password temporarily to alphabetic characters only, and it looks fine in plaintext, in the same terminal. I have my username configured thus: myusername ALL=(ALL) ALL I am using my password, NOT the root password, which are distinct. Just to be sure, I've tried both (even though I know the root password is not what I should use) - neither work. I have added myself to the group 'wheel' additionally, and included the following line: %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. I don't know what would cause it to act as though it was accepting my password, but then reject it. I have no trouble logging in with the same password, either at terminal shells, or through the X11 login manager.

  • What's the best approach when it comes to updating a production(on ec2) machine that can't go down?

    We have three main servers on ec2, web, database, and search. I logged in today to find: 77 packages can be updated. 45 updates are security updates. which scares the crap out of me so I want to update these machines asap but I'm scared to just run the updates on a live running system. Is this safe to do, what's the best approach when it comes to doing security updates on production machines?

  • jQuery Autocomplete problem - Shift Key behaves same as Return Key

    See: http://www.airbnb.com/ In the search bar, start typing "san f" (no quotes, all lowercase), then hit Return (or Enter). "San Francisco" is autocompleted. This is good! Now clear the search field and start over. type "San F" and boom - "San Francisco" is autocompleted as soon as you hit Shift. This is not expected. This happens in FF & Safari, but is untested elsewhere. I've looked through the jQuery Autocomplete Source Code and everything looks normal. Has anyone experienced this before?

    I'm working with the fulltext search engine of MSSQL 2008 which expects a search string like this: ("keyword1" AND "keyword2*" OR "keyword3") My users are entering things like this: engine 2009 "san francisco" hotel december xyz stuff* "in miami" 1234 something or "something else" I'm trying to transform these into fulltext engine compatible strings like these: ("engine" AND "2009") ("san francisco" AND "hotel" AND "december" AND "xyz") ("stuff*" "in miami" "1234") ("something" OR "something else") I have a really difficult time with this, tried doing it using counting quotation marks, spaces and inserting etc. but my code looks like horrible for-and-if vomit. Can someone help?
